the region are in the 30s and 40s. and we're seeing record numbers in parts of the area. it's 5:30. good morning, welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm vai sikahema. it is monday, may 16th. mid-may and it's usually chilly out there. >> yes. >> let's go to meteorologist bill henley with who has the neighborhood weather forecast. >> feels like an early spring morning. clear skies, a few passing clouds in a couple spots. look at the numbers. down to 36 degrees right now in the suburbs, new jersey 35 degrees, in the lehigh valley, 37. that's a record low, tied the record low in allentown. we'll see bright sunshine. look at the warmup, 54 degrees by 11:00 this morning. philadelphia, 44 degrees. the entire area will warm into the 60s this afternoon. you get a view of the studio, let's toss it over to jessica boyington who has your first alert traffic. jessie? >> that's right, bill.

skyforce 10 over top of an accident over top of 95. this is headed southbound. a few trucks involved as you can see. they are blocking the right-hand lanes and the left lanes are still getting by. a slowdown by the scene. you can see a few trucks involved. now we have fire engine on the scene, several police officers there as well. now it's starting to become a disturbance here, heading southbound on 95, this is right around columbus boulevard. you can see we're starting to have a little bit of a backup by that scene. no delay headed northbound, opposite the scene right now as you can see. we are starting to see delays here as they try to get the situation under control. now, again, this is skyforce 10 over top of the scene of 95 right around columbus boulevard. some delays there. this is in front of the scene on one of our cameras. you can see another vehicle involved as well with flashers on there. expect delays headed southbound on 95 this morning. more updates when i come back in

the next ten. happening today, opening statements are set to begin in the corruption trial of congressman chaka fattah. he's being accused of taking bribes and misusing funds for personal use. nbc 10's pamela osborne is outside the federal courthouse +y fattah also lost his recent re-election bid for congress. now he has to turn his attention to his defense. >> that's right, vai, the first thing that will happen here in court is the opening statements. the prosecution will lay out what they intend to prove throughout the child. 59-year-old fattah is accused of accepting bribes, misusing campaign funds and federal grants to benefit his family and friends. two aides are on trial as well.

a local defense attorney, not involved in this case, did weigh in and give us an idea of what he expects to happen during this trial. this case is going to come down to the prosecutors having to prove mental state. it's not just proving that something happened. it's not proving that you gave me something. there has to prove there was a direct correlation, that one was done in exchange for the other. they have to prove the mental state of the congressman or the other co-defendants was that there as a scheme here, these people were involved in a scheme to try to bribe -- be a part of a bribery or corruption scheme. >> fattah has denied the charges against him. he claims the fbi unfairly targeted him. now, chaka fattah's son is currently serving a five-year prison sentence on related charges. reporting live outside of the federal courthouse, pamela

history. during his address, the president took several swipes at donald trump although he never mentioned him by name. >> the world is more interconnected than ever before. it's becoming more connected every day. building walls won't change that. politics and in life, ignorance is not a virtue.ç >> president obama was given an honorary law degree by rutgers during the commencement. >> donald trump and joe biden cheered their loved ones at the wharton school of business graduation ceremony yesterday. trump was there for his daughter tiffany. vice president biden watched his granddaughter, naomi get her diploma. neither of them spoke, keeping the focus on the graduates. >> i think it says something to students everywhere that education is very important for these people to take their time and come out and see what's going on with some of the best. because some of the best students go here. >> today is the main

commencement ceremony for the university of pennsylvania students at franklin field. the creator and star of "hamilton" will deliver the commencement speech. now your first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 5:36. and it is dry this morning and will stay dry today. you'll need to bundle up, even though it is dry, it is cold. the temperatures have really dropped overnight, under clear skies, they're still falling right now. cold temperatures and a few scattered clouds blowing through the airy. 44 now in philadelphia. we'll see the temperatures climb but the wind will also be picking up. it's beginning to limit our warmup this afternoon. lunch time 57 degrees. by 2:00 this afternoon, 61 degrees. for the suburbs, check it out. 39 now. we'll see sunshine. a few thin clouds blowing through. 50 at 10:00. near 60 degrees by 2:00 this afternoon and into the 50s, rather into the 60s later this afternoon. the lehigh valley, you'll feel the wind, too.

this is where we've set our new record low in the lehigh valley at allentown. 37 degrees. we can see a quick warmup, 43 grows at 8:00. by lunch time, 54 and into the low 60s later this afternoon. for new jersey it's going to be a windy one. 41 now. the won just at 5 miles an hour. look how that changes by lunch time, that's a 19 mile-an-hour wind and there will be higher gusts. you may see a few clouds blowing through to start with this morning but mostly sunny skies at the shore. 41 degrees now in atlantic city. by 10:00, 53 degrees and then near 60 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon. the winds holing those temperatures become and for delaware, we're starting off with a few thin clouds. you can see them moving through delaware right now. 41 degrees, the current temperature, 46 degrees at 8:00. by lunch time, 56. the winds increase there, too. a 17 mile-an-hour wind could be gusting to near 30 miles an hour this afternoon.

that's today. seven-day forecast always at the bottom of the screen when i'm on the air. when i come back, the ten-day outlook. tracy, vai? >> thank you, bill. 5:38. skyforce 10 is over the scene of a tanker crash on 95. >> 95ç south at columbus. jessica boyington has been watching that. jessica? >> we are watching this scene, live right now with skyforce 10 over top of the scene of 95. again, this is right around columbus boulevard headed southbound. we are seeing delays headed southbound past the scene right now. all traffic is really at a slowdown by the scene. the good thing about it, not all lanes are completely closed. there is still traffic moving through the area. two tankers involved and another vehicle. several police officers are on the scene. there's a penndot crew guy. he's over into the next lane as well. all lanes on 95, the slowdown approaching the scene because everybody has to pretty much single file past the scene.

5:42. donald trump is scheduled to visit new jersey later this week for a pair of fund-raisers. >> one of them benefits new jersey governor chris christie. on thursday trump will join christie at the lawrenceville national guard armory in mercer county. all proceeds from the event will go to christie's presidential campaign debt. now to the democrats who are looking ahead to their next primary tomorrow at kentucky.

>> hillary clinton took on trump as well as her democratic rival bernie sanders yesterday. >> there is a big difference in this primary campaign between me and my opponent, bernie sanders. i voted to bail out the auto industry and he voted against it. because i wanted to save those millions of jobs. >> sanders is lagging behind clintons in the race for delegates. the vermont senator told a crowd in kentucky he's better equipped to beat trump because he does well with both democrats and independent voters. >> and what we are going to tell those superdelegates that if they want the strongest candidate to defeat donald trump, bernie sanders is that candidate. >> now, oregon also holds its primary tomorrow. the democrats are still vying for votes ahead of new jersey's primary, which is june 7th. check out the full primary calendar on the nbc 10 app. happening today, in washington, d.c., president obama will honor a philadelphia

police officer who was killed in the line of duty. the president will most humously award sergeant robert wilson iii with the medal of valor. wilson's family is expected to attend today's white houseç ceremony. this morning, a teenage girl is out of the hospital after a group of other girls jumped her at a montgomery county carnival. it happened saturday night in willow grieve. police believe two girls got into a fight, several other girls got involved and beat the victim. investigators say all the girls are under 18. they're still trying to identify everyone involved. a major league baseball diamond looked more like a boxing ring yesterday. the trouble took place in arlington, texas. it started when a rangers pitcher plunked jose bautista. while running the bases, bautista slid hard into the second baseman and then watch this, things got out of hand.

odor clocked bautista, square in the jaw, right there. i mean, that's right on the button. if you fight, i guess you have to do it right. >> the bad blood has existed between the rangers and bautista since last year's postseason. bautista flipped his bat after hitting a monster home run. the benches cleared then during that game as well. >> federal records show the bus company involved in this deadly rollover crash in texas had safety issues last year. eight people were killed in saturday's accident. dozens more were injured. the bus was on its way to a casino on the texas/mexico border when the bus rolled over. the county medical examiner describes it as the worst bus accident she's seen in ten years. the national transportation safety board is on scene investigating.

we will look at the highway, the vehicle, the driver and company operations. >> regulators in louisiana last year ordered one of the companies two buses out of service after safety reviews. but it's still not clear yet if it was the same bus involved in the crash. 5:46. investigators are looking into what caused a train filled with sand to derail. nine of the cars went off the tracks near an elementary school in ft. collins, colorado. there's nothing hazardous on the train. no one was hurt. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> and now, right now, bundle up. it is cold outside. we have sunshine that's just coming up. parts of the region seeing a record cold temperatures and at this hour, it's still falling. usually the coldest time of day is just after sunrise. doesn't seem to make sense. we're losing more heat than we're getting from the sun at

that very low angle. that's to start with. during the day, hold on to your hat. gusty winds, winds up to 30 miles an hour this afternoon. they settle down this evening, it will be a chilly evening and dry, too. won't be quite as cold as what we're experiencingç this morni. we're seeing cold temperatures. south jersey, 35 degrees, the suburbs 36. the lehigh valley, this is where one of the records has been tied in allentown, 37 degrees has been the low. it's just warmed up a degree, now 37 in mertztown. kutztown, 30 degrees this morning. in atlantic city, the wind is blowing 21 miles an hour this afternoon, 21 mile-an-hour winds in allentown, close to that in philadelphia. the winds coming out of the west or west/northwest will help keel it cool in spite of bright sunshine. yesterday we saw clouds riding in on the wind. we'll see fewer of them today.

66 in kutztown, nice recovery. easton up to 62 degrees this afternoon. sunshine and a few clouds blowing through phoenixville, a high of 64 degrees today. philadelphia warms into the middle to upper 60s this afternoon. 65 in mt. airy, claremont up to 67. a nice warmup after a chilling morning in new jersey. the 30s will disappear. we'll warm up close to 30 degrees. trenton 66, haddonfield, a few passing clouds and 64 degrees. you'll feel those gusty winds at the shore. the temperatures along the coast in the low 40s this afternoon, middle 60s for atlantic city. sunshine in wilmington, 64 degrees. up to 64 for rehoboth beach. that's today. sunny skies. but the satellite and radar as clear and nice as it is right now, there's wet weather to the west. these are the clouds and the rain that's due in here tomorrow. later tomorrow morning, that's when we'll likely see them arrive. the forecast calling for a nice, sunny day today. those winds will still be with

what are you seeing? >> we're watching that skyforce 10 shot that's over top of the scene. a few tanker trucks are involved. a few vehicles involved in this. two trucks and another vehicle ()j right now with its flashers on. we have a lot of emergency crews on the scene, ambulance, fire truck, several police officers on scene there as well. blocking off the right lane and the right shoulder and the next lane over. we only have one lane getting by if you're headed down 95 southbound around columbus boulevard. this is another shot of that scene, just in front of the scene, you can see that vehicle, the other vehicle involved with its flashers on right now. a little bit of a slowdown if you're heading down 95. lanes still are open. also an update for septa. the route 101 trolley is dealing with buss that replaced trolley on the route 101 pren probetwee providence road and orange street station.

nbc 10 news starts now. right now, two tanker trucks crash on 95 southbound at columbus boulevard. it is snarling traffic there. nbc 10 first alert reporter jessica boyington will show you how to get around it. a 17-year-old is in extremely critical condition after being shot at least seven times this morning. the shooter is still on the run. and a man is accused of throwing gasoline on his girlfriend while she was smoking a cigarette and police say he confessed to it and now he is facing charges in her death. you'll feel it when you step outside this morning. we are near
