from paris to cairo when it vanished from radar around 2:30 a.m. egypt time. that's 8:45 p.m. here on the east coast. 66 passengers and crew members were on board that plane. it was an airbus 320. no americans are reported to have been on that flight. egyptian authorities say search operations are right now under way over the mediterranean sea. aviation experts say two main theories are being considered. one, that a catastrophic breakup took place at altitude, which they're saying is highly unlikely, especially for this kind of reliable aircraft. the second theory is terrorism. >> this plane simply went off radar at 2:30 or so in the morning and with no trace. no distress call, nothing. that's very, very suspicious. >> we're also sorting through information that there may have been a distress call received from the plane. i'll have more information on the possibility of that in the
next half hour. also, in the last little bit, new information we heard from the french foreign minister right near the airport where this flight took off from headed to cairo. the french foreign minister says he has, in the last little bit, met with family members of passengers on board. he stresses what an emotional time this is and that nothing has been confirmed at this point. before he makes any further statements, he's going to wait for more reliable information. coming up in the next hour, we have a camera positioned outside cairo's airport, where we are expecting egyptian officials to address this disappearance around the 7:00 hour. reporting live in the digit operations center, katy zachry. happening today, donald trump is in mercer county to help out a friend. >> trump will help governor chris christie dig himself out of a financial hole. pamela osborn is live for us. >> reporter: christie dropped out of the race back in
february, but not before racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt that he's still working to pay off. that's where donald trump comes in. trump will be making an appearance at the lawrenceville national guard armory. the event is being billed as a rally. it comes at a cost though. tickets to attend the event are $200. it's a favor for friend and new jersey governor chris christie. the invitation says the money raised will help pay the $250,000 christie still owes for his own run at the white house. trump will also be at a separate fundraiser benefitting the gop here in new jersey today. tickets for that event, $25,000 per person. reporting live in lawrence township, mercer county, i'm pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. meantime, trump used the word rape regarding a decades old allegation against bill clinton. he made the reference during a fox news interview while referring to a controversial claim in the '90s by a woman
saying she was assaulted. clinton denied the allegations. he was never charged. a clinton spokesperson accuses trump of attacking when he feels wounded and dragging the american people through the mud for his own gain. meantime, comments about women have gotten former pennsylvania governor ed rendell into some trouble. now he's apologizing. >> yeah, he's quoted in a "washington post" article as saying there are probably more ugly women in america than attractive. the philadelphia daily news is weighing in on rendell's comments with today's headline "beware of dogs." rendell made the statement while referring to presumptive gop presidential nominee donald trump's comments on women voters. nbc 10 caught up with rendell at 30th street station yesterday. president ex-dnc chairman and former philadelphia mayor owned up to what he said. >> what i said was incredibly stupid and insensitive. when i read it in the article, i said, did i say that? >> i think the way he put that just is unfortunate. it's almost using the same ammunition to make an opposite point. >> i don't think that looks
should ever come into politics. >> philadelphia republican chairman issued a statement on rendell's kmencomments. he said, two wrongs don't make a right. it's not excusable he feels entitled to sound off on women's appearanc appearances, even as he critiques donald trump for doing just that. eight minutes after 6:00. some clouds around this morning. tracking a few scattered showers. not everybody is getting them. in delaware and south jersey, you can see the showers that have been moving through the area this morning. very light stuff. it's not going to last. these light showers have just exited the dover area. atlantic city is seeing some scattered, very light showers. most of the area is completely dry, though there is a chance of an afternoon shower similar to what we're seeing. mostly what we're going to see is clearing skies. the clouds you can see that are still with us will be here at 7:00. by 9:00 in conshohocken,
