"nbc10 news today" starts now. right now on "nbc10 news today," we are tracking rain that's moving into our region. you see it right there on the first alert radar. will it wash out our saturday plans? we have you covered with the neighborhood forecast. we're keeping an eye on the weather for today's stotesbury cup regatta on the schuylkill river, the largest high school rowing competition in the world. we'll take you there live for a preview of the action. good morning and welcome back to "nbc10 news today." i'm rosemary connors. it's 5:30 on this saturday. let's start with the forecast. meteorologist michelle grossman is tracking cloudy conditions out there right now. it doesn't took terrible, michelle, but we know it's coming. >> that's right. not terrible yet.
seeing breaks of sunshine in some spots but the clouds are building in. the rain will overtake the area. it's not far away. it will be a pretty soggy saturday. we're starting to see brighter skies with the sun rising, still lots of clouds in place. live view from the philadelphia camera. we'll see the clouds building in and the rain overtaking the area. you'll see it on radar in a few minutes. the weather story today, soggy saturday. if you have saturday plans outdoors, you want to plan on rain and some layers because it will be chilly too. temperatures right now 56 in philadelphia, 52 in allentown. 54 in coatesville. 57 in wilmington. same story as we look towards the beaches. 54 in atlantic city. 52 in mount hol idely. 11 degrees warmer in some spots. 7 degrees warmer in mount holly, so we feel better than yesterday morning, but by this afternoon temperatures staying put in the low 60s. yesterday was pretty nice with
the sunshine and warm temperatures. radar showing us that the rain is getting a little bit closer. we have some heavy rain to the south and west moving our way. as we zoom in closer to our area, we're dry for the most part right now. we do have rain on our doorstep, this probably not quite reaching the ground but harrisburg reporting some rain. it won't be too long before we start to see rain closer to home. throughout the next couple of days it will be a cool and damp one. tomorrow 64 degrees. not quite as set. chance for showers on sunday, 71. by monday, another chance for showers. that will be pretty much the trend throughout all the areas tomorrow. by monday, 68 degrees. we have a warmup in the forecast. monique braxton is live along kelly drive for the stotesbury cup regatta which could be impacted by today's rain. hopefully they'll warm up and be comfortable on the river. >> reporter: right now all is quiet along this makeshift food
court. no one has arrived yet to set up breakfast for the students who will be participating, but the sun is rising in the distance. hundreds of rowers will descend on the schuylkill river in a few hours for the oldest and largest high school rowing competition in the country. new this year, the petite singles for both male and female seniors, whether they're rowing as singles or in groups of eight. we spoke with some of the folks who will spend a second day here ott the stotesbury cup regatta. >> the kids get really excited about it. they know it's a big deal. >> it's really awesome. you have to work so hard to get here. >> reporter: more than 5600 athletes are participating. 984 boats are going to be hitting the water. and the competition begins at 8:00. live for now along kelly drive, monique braxton, nbc10 news. >> thanks for that, monique!
new from overnight. police are investigating a stabbing in south philadelphia. nbc10 was on the scene on south fifth street where investigators tell us someone stabbed a man several times just before 1:00 this morning. medics took the victim to the hospital. right now he is in stable condition. nbc10 was also on the scene of another stabbing just a few blocks away. this happened at south second and wolf streets just after 1:00 this morning. police say the wounded man is in stable condition. they're looking for the attacker in this case. no arrests yet in either of these stabbings. today in cumberland county, a viewing and funeral will be held for 15-year-old makayla mosley. she and her classmate were killed in a car crash hours after their prom last weekend. two other teens were hurt when the car smashed into a tree in millville. new jersey state police are
still investigating exactly what led up to that deadly accident. a newly released transcript shows bill cosby's wife refused to answer dozens of questions. according to the transcript at one point mrs. cosby left the room. another time she said, i'm done. she invoked spousal privilege when asked if her husband has been truthful with her. the deposition came as part of a defamation lawsuit brought by several women who claimed cosby sexually assaulted them. the secret service says an armed man from pennsylvania who was shot by an agent just outside the white house appeared to have a death wish. the white house went into lockdown while the incident played out yesterday. president obama was not there at the time. the man approached a security checkpoint with a gun, refused to drop it and was shot in the
chest. authorities say he made statements saying he wanted to die in a suicide by cap scenario. he has been identified as jesse oliveri of schuylkill county. the secret service says it does not believe there is any connection to terrorism in this case. an uber driver is facing charges for allegedly assaulting a university of delaware student. campus police say yolande mcallister choked the student several times on tuesday night. the student was treated at the hospital. mcallister is now charged with assault. new jersey may soon force uber drivers to be fingerprinted. according to our partners at news works, a bill to regulate ride-sharing services like uber and lyft is moving forward in the state assembly.
the fingerprints are the basis for background checks for drivers. uber and lyft have resisted the idea in other states. officer jesse hartnett received the law enforcement purple heart award last night. it was one of the several honors handed out at the sixth annual law enforcement awards ceremony. you may remember hartnett was ambushed while sitting in his patrol car in west philadelphia in january. he was shot three times. his arm shattered. the alleged shooter, edward archer, is charged with attempted murder. 5:37 right now on this saturday. a man's vacation leads to a lawsuit. why he is heading to court after he had trouble finding a place to stay in philadelphia. harrisburg is reporting some rain. 56 degrees in philadelphia. 52 in lehigh valley, 52 in the suburbs. as we zoom in closer, we're mainly looking at mid to upper 50s. 59 in society hill and fox chase. also in spots like park side, chestnut hill, temperatures in the mid 50s. dora around 54 degrees. cool day by the afternoon. temperatures staying put in the low 60s. winds not bad. they're pretty light if you're out and about. 5 to 10. we'll see winds gusting a little higher than that, especially at the coast this afternoon. we'll talk more about the rain and how much we can expect and the heaviest amounts. also, will we see rain on sunday? we'll talk about that too coming up. everyone can be italian today if they visit the italian market festival in south philly. the festival is going on rain or shine. head to the nation's oldest

today president obama will leave on a trip to asia that will include an historic stop in hiroshima, japan. m the white house says the president will not apologize when he speaks in hiroshima on friday. a top aide also says president obama will refer to hiroshima as a symbol of the loss of innocent life. a virginia man tried to use the popular website air beanibn visit to philadelphia but he felt he got the cold shoulder to he filed a lawsuit alleged discrimination. >> feel at home anywhere. >> reporter: the company's website advertisements spoke to 25-year-old gregory sheldon. when he searched last year to find a place to feel at home in philadelphia, he found an option he liked and contacted the property owner. >> when i went to request it, he
got back to me the next morning, told me that the space was unavailable. >> reporter: hours later he saw the same ad still visible for other travelers to book. >> normally when a place is filled it won't show up as available on there. >> reporter: keep in mind your airbnb profile shows your case. so he got creative and showed the faces of two profiles showing the facers of a younger and older white man. >> he accepted both of them. >> reporter: he reached out to airbnb as soon as it happened but says he didn't get a response until months later after his story went viral online. >> people would say, can't you do whatever you want with your private home? the fact is he opened it up to the public. the law is, once you do that, you are not allowed to discriminate. >> reporter: when selleden confronted the property owner he got this response. it's a disappointment people like you always victimize yourselves solely on the basis of skin color. >> i'm not sure what he meant by

>> it was a beautiful day yesterday. lots of sunshine, warm temperatures. a little bit summerlike. today, big difference. it will be cool and damp and breezy, if not gusty winds later on in the afternoon. right now we're starting out dry pretty much across the area. that will change pretty rapidly. looking a little gray in philadelphia. some spots seeing partly cloudy skies. clouds will overtake the area as well as rain in the next couple hours. weather headlines on your saturday morning. rain, some heavy, especially in the afternoon and evening hours. if you're out and about this afternoon you'll need the umbrellas. by sunday mostly cloudy skies. we do have the chance of showers still in the forecast, but it will be drier than today. if you're looking towards today or tomorrow to be outside tomorrow will be the better day, even though we do have the chance for some showers. next week we're looking at 80s returning. talking about upper 80s by midweek. doppler radar showing us that we're tracking some rain right now. most of it back to the west.
most of the area is dry but it's rapidly approaching our area. we'll see the rain falling pretty shortly. we'll see the clouds overtaking the area. back to the west and south, you see heavier rain. this will spread into our area through the later part of today. as we go throughout time in the next couple of hours, here is the rain. it will overspread the area by 8:00. rain is falling. 10:00, if you're out and about doing errands, bring the umbrella and jackets with hoods because the rain will be falling by 12:00. for your evening plans, here comes the chance for heavier pockets of rain, especially to the south and west. the jersey shore could see heavier rain and gusty winds as well. this evening, closer to dinnertime, there is the rain. by 5:00 we have a line of very heavy rain with red showing up on the map. that could indicate where we could see an inch or an inch and a half of rain in some spots. 56 in philadelphia.
