nbc 10 news starts now. a stormy start to memorial day. rain is already falling and more is on the way for the rest of the holiday. you may also hear some thunder and see some lightning before the day is done. and shore soaker, the wet weather puts a damper on the holiday fun. the clouds moved in yesterday after a beautiful start to the weekend. one last ride for one young pennsylvania rodeo star. the terrible accident that took place in front of thousands of spectators. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm pamela osborne. let's get to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert forecast.

it's a first look at communities across new jersey, pennsylvania and delaware. >> you'll find streets are flooded, lots of ponding in the wake of this heavy rainfall. showers and thunderstorms won't be an all-day affair. but the potential is there for showers or thunderstorms at just about any time. it's not going to it be an all-day rainfall. we'll get breaks in the precipitation as we're seeing right now. north wildwood, it's been a rainy morning. areas of fog, too. the temperatures will be keep on the cool side at the shore only into the 60s this afternoon. the forecast is calling for more of what we are seeing right now, heavy downpours. they're moving to the northeast and moving through northeast philadelphia right now. light showers at the shore. look at the drenching rain now moving through northeast philadelphia. it will clear and head clowe bensalem and towards trenton first thing this morning. a rainy start to the day and there are more showers that will be with us. you can see there are breaks in the precipitation.

it's not going to be an all-day rainfall. futurecast showing the threat of showers at the shore will continue into the afternoon hours and into the evening. this is 4:00 this afternoon. rain in philadelphia and to the south and to the east. keep a look out right now in the immediate future for some ponding on roads thanks to the heavy rainfall that's already move through. a look at the futurecast, hour by hour when i come back in ten minutes. katy zachry has your first alert traffic. a lot going on out there, katy. >> there is, bill. you can see from behind me, the live camera at 8th street, vine street expressway through center city philadelphia. i'm not seeing significant ponding on the vine street expressway but there is ponding being reported in new jersey. i'll get to that in a minute. light traffic we're seeing. unfortunately, a bash for a lot of people's people or aial d-- day plans. 95, 76 and 476 all free and

clear of any issues. you'll want to tap some of the brakes because of ponding on majors. this is a right at the 42 freeway at route 41. here's flooding being report on 295 northbound where it meets up with route 168, exit 28, the left lane is blocked. be aware of that. pam? power companies in our area say they're prepare for possible outages caused by tropical depression bonnie. peco put crews on stand by. delmarva and ac electric said they'll call in crews if necessary. a number of communities called off their festivities because of the weather. downingtown postponed theç parade, avalon canceled its parade. it will hold ceremonies indoors instead. for a complete list of changes and cancellations, check out
4:04 am or the app. it turned hazy at the jersey shore yesterday. but holiday visitors still made the most of the beach and the boardwalk. some families chose to leave early after hearing the rainy forecast for today. still, most of the people we spoke to said they enjoyed the weekend. >> had three good days. we can't complain. every other year it's been rainy and depressing. this year was good vibes only. >> shore businesses were busy again yesterday. another positive sign for the start of the season. coming up in the next half hour, nbc 10's matt delucia is live in ocean city. he's doing a shore tour all week long to give you a look at what's new in communities along the coast. memorial day weekend is also a time for tribute. today the names of two more soldiers will be officially added to the philadelphia vietnam veterans memorial. the names of frances cochran and george wilson are etched in

stone in the memorial. both men were army master sergeants who served in vietnam and died of illnesses in 1967. nbc 10 spoke to their loved ones at penn's landing yesterday. >> he was a soldier to the core. he finally made it to the wall. >> the official unveiling of the soldier's names is scheduled for 12:30 this afternoon, rain or shine. also happening today, vice president joe biden will attend a ceremony naming delaware's national reserve center in new castle for his son who die one year ago today. major bow bieau biden. a local remodeling company

will make a multimillion dollar donation to a housing project for veterans of the american legion post in ft. washington. also today, a pair of memorial day events are scheduled aboard the battleship "new jersey." . there will be a naturalization ceremony welcoming more than three dozen new u.s. citizens. count on nbc 10 to keep you up to the minute on any cancellations or changes. for this people memorial day, ct the nbc 10 app and check on the forecast. the lansdale memorial day parade gets started in just a few hours. thanks to north penn's marching band will still get to play. instruments are being loaned to the north penn's band. the montgomery county high school bands instruments were severely damaged in an arson.

authorities say a student set the fire in the band storage area. that student was arrested and charged with multiple felonies. a rodeo performer is dead after being thrown from his horse and trampled at a show in salem county. 19-year-old coy lutz of central pennsylvania was injured in front of thousands of spectate spectators. it happened saturday night at the cowtown rodeo in pilesgrove. you're looking at video moments before the horse threw him. he was rushed to the hospital where he later died from injuries. support off and running for septa police officer who was hurt in a hit and run last week. a group of about two dozen runners gathered yesterday at roland avenue and chippendale street in northeast philadelphia. it was the same time and place where a car struck officer gary

miller last week. they then made the run to the hospital where his wife met them. >> beer a strong community. >> he's still in a lot of pain but thank god i still have him. >> philadelphia police recovered the car involved in the hit and run. they're still looking to make an arrest, though. do you know a group that's making a difference in our area? it could be worth $50,000. the wawa foundation is launching its first ever hero award for local nonprofits. one group will win a $50,000 grant, three others will win $10,000 each. the checks will be presented on the fourth of july during the wawa welcome home america. which you can watch live right here on nbc 10. the deadline to enter is june 1st. for more information, visit the wawa

severe weather kills at least six people in texas. this video was taken by a student on a bus on the way home friday. you can see the water rushing on one side of the bus and high floodwaters on the other. this morning, parts of texas remain under water. near houston, some roads are covered by at least eight feet of water. one man says the water came crashing into his business. >> i was trying to pick the computers up off the ground, trying to save everything i could, put it on top of the bar because the water had risen that high. >> meteorologists say there could be even more rain on the way later this week. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> rain, downpours, a chance of thunderstorms. it will be a dreary memorial day, especially at the shore. this is a live view of cape may, winds are blowing, clouds in place and rain is coming down,

this is a view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. the entire area running warmer with one exception, allentown. a couple degrees cooler than yesterday at this time. the temperatures will be limited to the 70s because of the rain and clouds. you can see the scattered light showers at the shore. atlantic city seeing a few sprinkles as well. farther inland, this is where we're seeing the downpours. thunderstorm activity as this heavy, drenching rainfall moves into lower bucks county. it's moving at a pretty good clip. the rainfall within that area is coming down at more than an inch and a third an hour. it's such a large area, too. that's why we're expecting to see ponding on the roadways w h with. it's happened in the philadelphia area. look at the downpours heading towards allentown right now. those heavy downpours will keep moving. we'll see scattered showers for much of the rest of the day. there's a chance we'll see

downpours with thunderstorms as we go into the afternoon hours. futurecast, a few light rain showers in philadelphia, wilmington, trenton. meantime, at the shore, that's where the heavier rain is. you can see a quick downpour in the philadelphia area with suburbs and moderate showers at lunch time into central delaware. look at the downpours that extend into the suburbs during the afternoon hours. 2:00 in the afternoon. by late in the day, mainly cloudy skies with a chance of steady rainfall at the shore for atlantic city and cape may. then one more round of showers coming in from the northwest for this evening. by 10:00 this evening, the showers start to fall apart. overnight tonight, we'll see drying conditions but that's late tonight. during the day today, keep an umbrella handy. keep an eye on the roads, too. don't want to head out into those flooded roads. lots of ponding, especially at this hour. it's difficult to see where that water is, as you're driving down the street. kutztown, 84 degrees, upper 70s

for easton and bethlehem, occasional showers for the suburbs. 79 degrees in west chester, in phoenixville. for philadelphia, a shower, thunderstorm possible. high temperatures topping out near 80 in the afternoon. and the farther to the south you go, the more likely it is to stay cool. trenton 79 but haddonfield, 72 degrees. glassboro, occasional showers and thunderstorms. rain and a chance of thunderstorms for atlantic city. at the shore, avalon just 64 degrees this afternoon. inland and it's into the 70s. for delaware, into the 70s, not exactly a big warmup from where we are right now with rain and the possibility of thunderstorms. that's today. the ten-day forecast when i come back. all right, bill, thank you. let's switch gears and get a check on how things are looking at the road with first alert traffic reporter katy zachry. hey, katy. >> behind me we have an accident, a pretty major accident at route 1 at henry

avenue. you can see the accident on our traffic camera. one of the vehicles involved, i believe this is a multivehicle accident. it just happened not long ago. i am getting new information. i'm getting word there are significant road closures on route 1 around this accident because emergency crews are on their way to respond. i'll keep my eye on it and let you know. avoid route 1 northbound at henry avenue for all of you taking the boulevard this morning. a live look outside at the blue route and germantown pike. earlier, another accident was just clear. this was northbound on the blue route, right at germantown pike between germantown pike and the exit for mid-county toll plaza. that has cleared in the last little bit. 476 looks good to go. 295, there's intoing being reported at the exit for 168. be aware of that. pam? >> thank you, katy. a summertime favorite could lead to a brush with death. a warning from doctors you need

tomorrow, one of the teen girls facing charges in the death of a classmate is scheduled to appear in court. i 16-year-old is charged with criminally negligent homicide in the death of amy joyner-francis. she joined last month after a fight in a high school bathroom.

two other girls are facing charges as well. friends and families say they'll say their final farewell to a burlington city teen who was run over by a driver who jumped the curb. funeral services will be held thursday morning. police say the 17-year-old was hit by a drunk driver last weekend while walking home with a friend. a suspect has been charged. a tomorrow, the wildcats will head to the white house. president obama is set to honor the men's basketball team after they won the the 2016 ncaa championship. keith jones will also be there for the meet and greet and will bring it to you live in will be villanova's second trip to the white house, winning the title first in 1985. yesterday's running of the 100th indianapolis 500 had the usual mix of speed and wreckage, a crash on lap 64 put juan pablo

gear handy. we've seen drenching rain move into the city. that's a live view looking across the delaware. 60s and low 70s. 68 at philadelphia international. no real cold spot this morning. no real hot spot this afternoon. we're not going to be in into the 80s or near 90 degrees as we've seen lately. we may get up to 80 but that's about it. this is what we're dealing with this morning. plenty of rain from the lehigh valley where showers are pushing through the allentown area. philadelphia seeing some drenching rain move towards the trenton area. you can see light scattered showers at the shore. and for the delaware beaches. those drenching rains have moved through philadelphia. there is ponding on the roadways and you'll experience that in lower bucks county and the trenton area. there's heavy rainfall with those showers. and there's more moisture to come. what was tropical storm bonnie now a tropical depression is spinning moisture into the northeast. you can see it coming up through north carolina, hugging the coastline. so dreary conditions, certainly

at the shore. but the potential for showers and thunderstorms will be with the entire area during the day today. those clouds keeping temperatures in the 70s for philadelphia, 78 degrees this afternoon. tomorrow we'll be clearing out. it all ends tonight. tomorrow afternoon a big warmup to 88 degrees. then the temperatures start coming down closer to normal which should be in the upper 70s this time of year. 82 for wednesday. 70s for thursday and friday. come friday, that's the next chance that we'll see showers in the area. that will help to keep things cooler on friday. next weekend, looks like rain for saturday with a high of 70 degrees. then we should break out, some sunshine for sunday and the temperatures bounce back up to normal, 78 degrees. back into the 80s on monday, dry on monday with partly sunny skies. come tuesday and wednesday, we'll be tracking more showers and thunderstorms. the temperatures right back up to 80 degrees. the seven-day forecast is on the

screen, any time we're on the air, at least once a half hour, we'll check out the ten-day outlook. keeping an eye on the roadways, katy zachry joins us live with a check at what conditions are like right now. >> pamela, unfortunately we have wet roadways and that can lead to ponding, flooding and also an accident scene, which our camera is not showing us right now. it's on route 1 northbound between henry lane and scotts lane. between that stretch of roadway traffic is closed on the roosevelt boulevard northbound. in a few minutes. there's flooding in new jersey at right 295 near route 168. a quick check of your drive times on the 42 freeway, everything is looking pretty good as you head northbound between route 55 and the walt whitman bridge. you can see outside of that flooding area as you head southbound between 38 and 168.

now to decision 2016. democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders appears to be changing his tune about the party's convention in philadelphia.ç last week, he said things could get messy but on the phone yesterday, sanders assured nbc 10's lauren mayk the dnc will be calm. >> do you think it's going to be a peaceful convention? >> of course it will. i think some of the media and some of my opponents are trying to suggest otherwise. but the american people have a right to stand up and fight for what they believe in. that's what the constitution is about. of course our campaign rejects all forms of violence. >> observers say sanders is pushing democrats towards a more progressive ideology. on the republican side of the presidential race, donald trump says illegal immigrants are treated better than military

veterans in the u.s. the presumptive nominee made that remark in washington yesterday at a motorcycle rally honoring veterans and p.o.w.s. trump said the veterans affairs secretary doesn't care about long wait times. trump also criticized hillary clinton for not being tough enough on the v.a. meantime, former new mexico governor gary johnson is now the libertarian nominee for president. the party picked johnson at its convention in florida yesterday. he ran for president in 2012 getting about 1% of the popular vote. some recent polls show him getting as much as 10% in this year's race. the gorilla exhibit at the cincinnatiza wi-- cincinnati zo will remain closed after a child fell into the exhibit and came face-to-face with a 400-pound primate.

the 4-year-old boy slipped into the gorilla exhibit. the primate appears to protect the boy at times but witnesses also saw the animal drag and throw the child. a few minutes later, the zoo's dangerous animal response team killed the endangered gorilla. the director of the zoo said the child wasn't under attack but was in danger. the child is now fine. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather. >> a rainy night, some showers and some thunderstorms and some very light fog at the shore. that's a live view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. more rain is on the way. it's going to be a cool day at the shore. the temperatures holding in the 60s for most of the day. your neighborhood forecast just ahead. katy zachry is in the first alert traffic center. unfortunately ponding on the roads in new jersey and pennsylvania reported so far. what i have on the screen is a shot of the boulevard. look at the right-hand lanes, no traffic is getting by.
