we're seeing heavy rain overnight and the possibility of more drenching rain will be with us this afternoon. it will keep temperatures cooler offer the holiday weekend so far, in the upper 70s. interior new jersey, 60s and rainy at the shore. in delaware, the lehigh valley, you'll see showers in delaware, a bet every chance of more breaks in the precipitation. we're not expecting an all-day rainfall for this memorial day. when we do get showers and possible thunderstorm, we could be in for some more heavy rainfall as we've seen this morning. you see some of the heaviest rain moving through the trenton area right now. that's a thunderstorm that's clearing trenton. still impacting northeastern burlington county. those heavy downpours, similar to what we've seen in philadelphia and other parts of the area have created ponding on the roadways this morning. another linw of showers starting to lighten up a little bit in allentown. the upon for breaks in the
precipitation, looks good for the day. it's not going to be an all day rainfall. there's a good chance you'll need your umbrella even into the evening hours at times. take a look at the futurecast, hour by hour to show you when those showers and potential thunderstorms are most likely to occur. that's when i'm back in ten minutes. right now let's see how the roads are faring with this wet weather. katy zachry has your first alert traffic. >> bill, not too well this morning, i've got to tell you, if you're up early for -- of course there's no school or work for most people. if you're trying to get ahead on your commute home after your memorial day weekend, it's going to be a little slow going this morning. we are seeing ponding in new jersey along 295. this is a live look at route 42 at the ac expressway. no issues to report other than the rain puddling on the roadway. 295, that's a different story. we're seeing flooding in the northbound lanes right where it hits with route 168. the left lane is blocked there because of that flooding on the
roadways. be aware of that. we have flooding in center city philadelphia, 76 eastbound right at 30th street. the right lane is blocked there. it may be in the process of clearing. another thing in the process of clearing, there was a crash on route 1 northbound near henry avenue and there were significant delays as far back as the schuylkill expressway. in the last little bit that scene has cleared. lauren? >> thanks, katy. power companies in our area say they are prepared for possible outages caused by tropical depression bonnie. peco put extra cruise on stand by. delmarva and ac electric said they will call in crews if necessary. a number of communities called off their memorial day festivities because of the wet weather. downingtown canceled its parade today. bensalem township postponed the parade until next sun, june 5th. avalon canceled its parade. it will hold a sayre menny -- ceremony indoors instead.
check out the nbc10.com app or tap the nbc 10 app of course. several beach resorts are still in recovery mode after superstorm sandy, now nearly four years later. recent floods have also taken a toll on places like ocean city but now something new on the beaches there. nbc 10's matt delucia continues our week-longshore tour live in ocean city with details on how some new sand is playing a big role this summer. matt? >> reporter: that's right. after sandy, some areas needed help in the form of fixed up dunes and beaches. now new sand graces the beaches in ocean city at a cost of about $57 million. it may not look like anything more than your typical beach but the engineering is there from 37th street to 59th street. this is where the ocean city beaches benefitted from a 57 millioned replenishment project
from the army corps of engineers. the beaches are now higher, about nine feet higher than ocean level. doug burgin says this project was important not just to protect the beach but also the valuable homes here. >> vitally important for anyone who owns property, obviously. also for ocean city because of the tourism industry and memorial day weekend, summer coming up. it's nice to have wide beaches for everyone toç enjoy. >> this is part of a three-town deal with strathmere and sea isle city. one other point to mention, talking about the cancellations, right now we've seen the rain let up a little bit here. it's misty at the shore, foggy but just up the street, they're still planning to have their memorial day ceremony, weather
permitting, they may hold it indoors. we'll keep you posted for that. matt delucia, nbc 10 news. it turned hazy at the jersey shore yesterday. but holiday visitors still made the most of the beach and the boardwalk. some families chose to leave early after hearing rainy weather until the forecast. still, most of the people who we spoke to said they enjoyed the weekend. >> we had three good days an we can't complain. >> shore businesses were busy again yesterday. another positive sign for the start of the season. memorial day weekend is also a time for tribute. today the names of two more soldiers will be officially added to the philadelphia vietnam veterans memorial. the names of frances corcoran and george wilson are now etched in stone at the memorial. both men were army master sergeants who served in vietnam
and died of illnesses in 1967. nbc 10 spoke to their loved ones who visited the memorial at penn's landing yesterday. >> he finally made it on the wall. >> the official unveiling is scheduled for 12:30 this afternoon, rain or shine. thanks to a couple of schools, north penn's high school's marching band will still get to play today. west chester and springfield area high are loaning instruments to north penn's band. last week, the montgomery county high school's bands' instruments were severely damaged in an arson. authorities say a student set the fire in the band storage area. that student was arrested and charged with multiple felonies. and tap on the nbc 10 app for help making your memorial

salem county.ç 19-year-old coy lutz of central pennsylvania was injured in front of thousands of spectators. it happened saturday night at the cowtown rodeo in pilesgrove. you're looking at cell phone video of lutz's ride moments before the horse threw him off. we froze the video just before he fell to the ground. paramediced rushed lutz to the hospital where he died from his injuries. breaking news into nbc 10. emergency crews are working to rescue a person from a car that crashed into a pole in philadelphia. we are live on the scene at g street and wyoming avenue in juniata park. this crash happened just before 4:30 this morning. we're told live wires are down across the car there. firefighters and medics are on the scene. tap the nbc 10 app and stay with nbc 10 for updates. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist bill henley.
>> memorial day is only five hours old but it's been a rainy one so far. a steady light rain for many shore communities. the rest of the area is seeing heavy downpours. flood advisory is in effect for parts of the area and there's a upon for more wet weather. if you're heading out the door, grab your rain gear. there will be daytime showers and a chance of scattered thunderstorms during the evening hours. cape may, sea isle city, inland we've seen heavy downpours. see some scattered showers in new jersey for gloucester and camden counties. in philadelphia, rain was drenching rain overnight. those showers and some thunderstorms now have moved off to the northeast. those storms moving to the northeast at 25 miles an hour. starting to pull away from trenton. there's still a good downpour moving into the trenton area. farther north and west, allentown, lehigh valley, berks county, you haven't been left
out of the rain. scattered light rain in berks county. there's a chance we'll see more showers and possibly thunderstorms develop this afternoon. there you can see reading area getting light rain showers. that also is moving off to the northeast at 25 miles an hour. it will be drying out in the short term in the reading area. all this moisture coming up from the south will keep the chance of more showers and thunderstorms with us during the day, especially likely to see that rain hugging the coastline. farther inland, less likely to see the rain during the morning hours in allentown. look at the potential downtours according to the futurecast. that's at 10:00. still could be in for heavy downpours, possibly even a thunderstorm at philadelphia. 1:00 this afternoon. as we go through the afternoon hours, look at the 3:00 rendering of heavy downpours in the suburbs. and the futurecast keeps showers into the evening hours, especially at the shore. those heaviest showers would be offshore, just enough to keep temperatures cool at the shore.
and the threat of showers coming in from the northwest this evening at the allentown area. that line of showers should be fizzling as it comes through philadelphia, trenton and wilmington by 11:00 tonight. then we get some dry. you may have noticed that. i'll take you through the forecast for today and the next ten days, the ten-day outlook when i'm back in ten minutes. let's get a check on how that breaking news on the roads is affecting traffic. katy zachry joining us live. she's been checking the situation. katy, what do you know? >> weç had a camera shot. we have a crew out in juniata park section of philadelphia where a vehicle crashed into a pole and then wires from that pole fell on to the car. you can see it right here. crews are out there. emergency crews, firefighters, police, and utility workers who are headed out to that scene to safely remove the person from inside and clean up that scene. if we go to my maps, i can show
you where this is happening, g street at wyoming avenue. they'll have detours in place. if you can full on avoid that area, i would suggest it. i'll let you know when the scene clears. there is flooding in center city on the schuylkill expressway eastbound at 30th street. we're seeing flooding, ponding on the roadways in new jersey along 295 at route 168, which is exit 28. the left lane is blocked there. i did get some new information. this happened not long ago, an accident on the schuylkill expressway eastbound right between south street and the exit for university avenue. i'll have that on a map in about ten minutes. time now 5:12. 72 degrees this morning. controversial killing. take a look at this incident, caught on camera, a 3-year-old boy falls into an enclosure and comes face to face with a 400-pound gorilla. hear why the public is now split

5:15 on this memorial day. let's get a look at some of the stories we'll be following this weekend on nbc 10. tomorrow, one of the teen girls facing charges in the death of a classmate is scheduled to appear in court. amy joyner-francis died last month after a fight in a bathroom at howard high school of technology in wilmington, new castle county. two other girls are also facing charges. friends and family will say their final farewell to a burlington city steen who was run over by a dryer who jumped the curb. funeral services for antoine dim bers jr. will be held thursday morning. police say the 17-year-old was hit by a drunk driver last weekend while walking home with a friend. a suspect has been charged. tomorrow, the wildcats will head to the white house. president obama is set to honor the men's basketball team after they won the 2016 ncaa championship.
nbc 10's keith jones will also be there for the meet and greet when we'll bring it i don't you live. this will be villanova's second trip to the white house, first winning the title in 1985. also happening today, vice president joe biden will attend a ceremony naming delaware's reserve center for his son who died one year ago today. he battled brain cancer. he was 46 years old. and today at 1:00, dignitaries will be in ft. washington, montgomery county to honor fallen heroes. among them, army undersecretary and former congressman patrick murphy. a local remodeling company will make a multimillion dollar donation to a houseth project in ft. washington. a pair of memorial day events are scheduled aboard the battleship new jersey in camden.
a wreath ceremony is scheduled for 10:00, followed by a naturalization ceremony welcoming more than three dozen new u.s. citizens. memorial day is the beginning of grilling season. doctors have a warning. >> be careful what you clean your grill with. if you are using an old wire brush, you may want to toss it at the beginning of the season. the bristle could fall off on the grill and end up in your burger, creating a serious danger. >> the bristle unrecognized could get lodged into various areas of the body, whether it's in the throat or tonsil region, neck region. >>ç doctors suggest using a nyn bristle brush to clean your grill instead of a wire one. 5:18. let's get a check of the roads this morning on a rainy monday. nbc 10 traffic reporter katy zachry joining us live. what's it looking like out
there? >> we've had quite a mixed bag since we've been on the air at 4:00 a.m. the latest crash comes in on the schuylkill expressway eastbound right between south street and university avenue. so this is a camera shot of 76 near south street. the accident is just out of our camera view. traffic is still running smoothly. everything is going a lot slower this morning because of the rain and ponding in some areas. 76 eastbound between south street and university avenue. be aware of the crash there. i understand it's been moved over to the shoulder. juniata, g street at wyoming avenue, there's a car into a pole, wires are over the car. there are emergency crews out there trying to clear the scene. as soon as they clear it, i'll let you know. until then, avoid that area. there's also flooding in center city on 76 eastbound at 30th street and the right lane is blocked because of that. we also have significant ponding
on the roadways in new jersey along 295 northbound at route 168. the left lane is blocked there because of the ponding on the roadways. when i see you in a bit, we'll take a look at delaware roads. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> you've seen a lot of rain so far. it will be a lighter rainfall for much of the day at the shore. it this is a live view from cape may, beach avenue. seeing rain. skies will stay cloudy through the day today, keeping temperatures cool. won't see that big warmup. low 70s in philadelphia, delaware, some 60s. a few showers in the lehigh valley and 71 degrees along the shore on the beach, ocean city, atlantic city in the upper 60s. 70s inland. don't expect these temperatures to move much at all thanks to the clouds and the rain. we've seen thunderstorms with drenching rain move through the philadelphia area. showers in the lehigh valley and also some steady rainfall for the jersey shore and the
delaware beaches and more of that is on the way. there is a flood warning in effect right now for northeast philadelphia. thanks to the heavy rainfall that has already moved through. we're starting to dry out now in philadelphia. look to the south, lots of moisture heading up the east coast and that is going to keep the chance of showers with us through the day. since the overnight hours, since midnight, very heavy rainfall has come through. look at the drenching rain into new jersey and the philadelphia area. delaware county philadelphia into lower bucks counties, upper burlington, camden, gloucester counties and salem counties have gotten two plus inches of rain. we will be clearing out starting overnight tonight. the showers will taper off. won't be an all-day rainfall today. clouds will be hanging in there for most of the day. temperatures in the upper 70s, occasional showers and a chance of downpourses during the day today. drying out tomorrow. look at the warmup, 88 degrees.
it will feel more like it did yesterday before those showers moved in. then wednesday and thursday, close to normal, which is right around the 80 degrees mark for this time of year. 76 on thursday. another chance of showers late in the week on friday. into saturday. drying out and warmingç up for sunday, back up into the upper 70s. 81 degrees with a chance of showers. come tuesday and wednesday will be dry with partly so mostly sunny skies, high temperatures near 80 degrees. seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen anytime i'm on the air and once a half hour, your ten-day outlook. planned outages. we'll tell you why and where peco is intentionally shutting down power for shoulds of customers in our area. i'm speaking one-on-one with democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders. hear what he says about the democratic national convention in philadelphia and what some of his supporters are planning to do.

but the american people have a right to stand up and fight for what they believe in. that's what the constitution is about. of course our campaign rejects all forms of violence and intimidation. >> senator sanders is campaigning in california which holds its primary on june 7th. the same day as new jersey. i asked if he's coming back to new jersey before the primary. he said he would like to if his schedule allows. he thinks he has a shot to win that state. hillary clinton plans to hold at least two campaign events in new jersey this week. on wednesday, she'll rally voters in newark. on thursday, she'll campaign at mercer county community college in west windsor. donald trump says illegal immigrants are treated better than military veterans in the u.s. the presumptive nominee made that remark in washington yesterday at a motorcycle rally honoring veterans and p.o.w.s.
