nbc 10 news starts now. heavy rain is moving through this memorial day morning. check out the radar, lots of activity there. flooding has already been an issue this morning. a check of your neighborhood weather and roads coming up. and it wasn't a total washout. a lot of families still made it down the shore. we'll tell youç what businesse are saying about the start of the summer season. plus, the memorial day honor for two philadelphia families. two soldiers names are added to vietnam memorial wall nearly 50 years after their deaths. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today on this memorial day. i'm pamela osborne. >> i'm lauren mayk. today is the day we honor and remember those who died serving our country. we'll have a look at memorial day events but first let's check

in with bill henley this morning. good morning, bill. >> good morning, lauren. it's been a rainy night, a drenching rain has let up in wilmington. that's a live view from frawley stadium. there's a chance we'll see more showers. the heaviest showers have pushed past philadelphia and the lehigh valley is starting to taper off, too. what was tropical storm bonnie is now a depression. all that moisture is coming up the east coast. still a chance of pretty good showers. we've seen residual rainfall that's led to some flooding, ponding on many roadways. a flood warning is still in effect. a flash flood warning for northeast philadelphia. flooded roads have been numerous this morning. it will recede the water but there's a chance we'll see more showers and possibly thunderstorms during the day. right now, delaware is at 70 degrees. 60 degrees in the lehigh valley. that's the view from easten this morning. a chance of showers or thunderstorm during the day today. most of the day it is going to

be cloudy and dreary. 72 degrees at 8:00. 76 by 11:00 this morning. this afternoon, no big memorial day warmup here. 85 for the lehigh valley, look at the 70s for delaware and low 80s in philadelphia and a chance we'll see more showers and the possibility of thunderstorms. i'll show you where those showers are most likely when i come back with the futurecast in ten minutes. let's find out how the roads are faring. ponds has been a persistent issue in some areas. one of those areas is the schuylkill expressway eastbound. this is the shot near the exit for 30th street station. emergency vehicles in the right hand lane as you pass this area headed eastbound. traffic is getting over into the left-hand lane because of flooding we had earlier this morning, it dissipated, now it's back. there's also flooding as you head northbound on 95 just south

of the philadelphia international airport. southbound 95 between woodhaven and the vine, really good drive, easily 14 minutes. center city eastbound, a 12-minute drive and between 76 and 95 is looking good. glenolden, chester pike south, there's a branch across south avenue. avoid that area or just know it's there. finally in new jersey, a live look outside at the 42 freeway at the ac expressway where you can see residual wet roadways. if you're head back from the shore early this morning, unfortunately, a lot of memorial day plans are awash, you have a pretty good drive ahead of you. >> following breaking news in philadelphia. crews are working to rescue a person from a car that crashed into a pole. you see it there. the crash brought down live

wiresç across the car. you're looking live on the scene at g street and wyoming avenue. the crash happened just before 4:30 this morning. peco crews, firefighters and medics are on the scene there. here's video we shot within the last half hour. you can see a man inside the car peeking out. but apparently being told to go back inside, again, the car crashed into the pole that brought down some live wires. peco crews, firefighters, medics on the scene helping that gentleman out. tap on the nbc 10 app and stay with nbc 10 for updates. also breaking, we've learned three people are in the hospital following the crash of several cars in philadelphia. nbc 10 was on the scene on route 1 at scotts lane and east falls. the cars collided between bridge and henry avenues around 4:00 this morning. we're working to find out the victims' conditions. we do know police rerouted

traffic while the scene was being cleared. and the ferris while on wonderland pier is a staple in ocean city. >> it opened at 1:00 this afternoon. matt delucia is live for us this morning. matt is keeping an eye on that, swell the weather. he's doing double duty. >> right now it's dreary here on the ocean city boardwalk. take a look at the beach. not seeing too many people take the morning stroll. it is foggy but mild. now might be the best time to head out for the morning walk if you're going to do so before the heavier rain sets in. i was talking about the gillian's wonderland, i was talking to the owner. they were open last month. since then the weather really has been terrible, though. they really are hoping for

better weather along the way. we caught up with the workers getting everything ready. the rides were open this weekend. wonderland is here for a 52nd season. >> i'm a third generation. my grandfather started back in 1930 and then my father and to my brothers and i. >> we have a few of the same rides and a lot of people like seeing the same rides they did when they were kids. it's cool. >> it's nice to see people come here and enjoy this after waiting all winter and spring. the last half hour we talked about the sweet treats of the boardwalk. next half hour, we'll head to another long-time favorite of ocean city. we'll see you then. >> we're looking forward to it. by the way, all week long, nbc 10's matt delucia is giving you a shore tour, a look at what's new in communities along the coast. tomorrow he's in sea isle.

hope you'll join us for that. it turned hazy at the jersey shore yesterday. holiday visitors made the most of the beach and the boardwalk. some families chose to leave early after hearing the rainy forecast for today. still, most of the people we spoke to said they enjoyed the weekend. >> we had three good days and we can't complain. every other year it's been rainy and it's depressing. this year it was good vibes only. >> shore businesses were busy again yesterday. another positive sign for the start of the season. memorial day weekend is also time forç tribute. today the names of two more soldiers will be officially added to the philadelphia vietnam veterans memorial. names of frances corcoran and george wilson are now etched in stone at the memorial. the men were army master sergeants who served in vietnam and died of illnesses in 1967. nbc 10 spoke to their loved ones who visited the memorial at penn's landing yesterday. >> he was a soldier to the core.

i'm sure he's up there smiling, he finally made it on the wall. >> the official unveiling of the soldiers' names is scheduled for 12:30 this afternoon, rain or shine. power companies in our area are ready for possible power outages caused by tropical storm bonnie. >> a number of communities called off their memorial day festivities because of the wet weather. downingtown canceled its parade, bensalem postponed its parade until next sunday, june 5th. avalon canceled its parade. instead, they'll be holding an indoor ceremony. for a complete list, check out the nbc10.com app or go to the website. count on nbc 10 to keep you up to the minute on any cancellations or changes in the

south jersey. there are heavy downpours overnight, moving to the northeast. moving through northern new jersey. scattered showers in the area. that's what we'll see during the day today. showers and a chance of a thunderstorm. at the shore, it's where we see steadier rainfall. light rain in cape may and sea isle city seeing light scattered showers. look at the steady rain along the delaware beaches. this moisture will keep going during the day today. tropical depression bonnie pumping moisture in the atmosphere. this is the futurecast, 9:00 this morning, look at the steady rain in southern delaware and into new jersey. 10:00 or 10:30 this morning. the most likely area to see rainfall, less likely north and west. you might even see breaks of

sunshine. clouds hang in there as we go into the afternoon hours. the chance of showers extend lehigh valley, 2:30 in the afternoon an a chance of showers continues for the evening hours. it's not going to be an all-day rainfall. clouds with occasional showers in philadelphia. 78 degrees this afternoon. 70s for the suburbs and the lehigh valley. might see a few breaks of sunshine. can't rule out a shower during the afternoon or evening hours. for delaware, cloudy skies, 77 degrees at 1:00 this afternoon. a chance of showers, especially this afternoon for delaware. for new jersey, and the jersey shore, this is where we're more likely to see showers and a chance of a thunderstorm, a scattered thunderstorm is possible this morning and into the afternoon hours. at the shore, dreary conditions, might see low 70s but many shore communities will stay in the 60s during the day today. when i come back, the ten-day outlook to show you when we'll

be drying out. this is a day to be extra careful out on the roads today. we are getting word of around accident. >> this is on the northeast extension. katy zachry joins us live to tell us more about it. >> it's jamming traffic considerably if you're making your way home from the poconos if that's where you were for the memorial day weekend and leaving early because of the rain today. the accident is on the southbound side near the lansdale exit, which is near exit 31. they were saying expect delays of up to an hour because of the right lane blockage because of the crash on the northbound extension. 95, very light volume. there was flooding reported on 95 in the northbound direction, just south of the philadelphia international airport. be aware of that if you're headed in that area.

juniata park, there's a vehicle still out there, g street and wyoming avenue. it ran into a pole and wires fell on the car. you want to avoid that intersection specifically. a hazard in the roadway in delaware county. chester pike south at south avenue, a branch is in the roadway there. 6:14 and a group of runners spent the holiday weekend showing their support for a septa officer. coming up, how hitting the pavement is helping to bring awareness to the injured officer. plus, it's one of the most read stories on nbc10.com, a teenage rodeo rider dies during a performance in south jersey. what we learned about the rider and how he died, next.

welcome back. an outpouring of support for septa police officer who was hurt in a hit and run last week. >> a group of about two dozen runners gathered yesterday at roland avenue in chippendale street in northeast philadelphia. this was the same time and place where a car struck officer gary miller during a jog last week. the group then made the nearly four-mile run to the spot near area torresdale hospital where miller's wife met them. >> we're all runners. we all sweat together. our muscles all burn together. we're all -- we're a strong community. >> he's still in a lot of pain but thank god i still have him. >> philadelphia police recovered the car involved in the hit and run but they are still looking to make an arrest. it's 6:18. a rodeo performer is dead after he was thrown from his horse and trampled at a show in salem county. >> shorts say 19-year-old coy lutz of central pennsylvania was injured in front of thousands of spectators. it happened saturday night at

the cowtown radio in pilesgrove. you're looking at develop phone video of lutz's ride moments before the horse threw him. paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he diedç from h injuries. 6:19 and be extra careful out on the roads today. they are wet and katy zachry is keeping an eye on them for us. >> a lot of things going on this morning. katy, what can you tell bus the roads right now? >> we had torrential downpours for quite a stretch of time this morning and that created significant ponding on the roads in new jersey and pennsylvania. i'll get to that specifically in just a minute. we are following a new crash into our system. this took place on the northeast extension southbound right as you make your way to the lansdale exit, which is exit 31. the right lane is blocked there. and because of considerable traffic that could be building as people are making their way back from the poconos if that's where they were for the memorial day weekend, it is jamming

traffic and i'm reading there are wait times of up to an hour to get past that crash scene. be aware of that. 95, this is just south of the philadelphia international airport. you can see on the shoulder, jutting out a little bit into traffic is one of those huge puddles that we've been talking about that really is affecting things on our roadways throughout the area. just a heads up, 95 south of the airport as you make your way, be aware of that. also in delaware, drive times in and around the wilmington area. if you're making your way between 295 and 495 northbound, the drive is ten minutes. it was really coming down this morning, rain nonstop. >> i was hoping it would be stopping. i know we're not going to be seeing that downpour all day, right? >> no, no. vast improvement from first

thing this morning when the heavy drenching showers moved through. we will see clouds hang in there for most of the day. there's still a chance you'll need your umbrella during the day in philadelphia. as far as flood threat, still one. a flash flood warning still in effect for a few more minutes. nine minutes until 6:30. flooded roads have been reported. pennypack creek is one of the locations we've been watching for flooding this morning. at the shore, look how dreary it looks in north wildwood. that's the view this morning. we've seen steady rainfall at the shore. it's tapered off now but there's more in store for us during the day. temperatures are in the low 70s inland. look at those shore communities. upper 60s for ocean city and atlantic city. not expecting these temperatures to move much at all during the day today as clouds hang in there. this is a look at the rainfall that came in overnight. this is the radar estimate. look at the drenching rain not

just into philadelphia but burlington, camden, gloucester and salem counties. more than 2 inches of rain already on the ground. the heavy downpours are out of the picture. it's all streaming up from the south, hugging the east coast. the remnants of tropical storm bonnie, now a tropical depression, still pumping moisture in the atmosphere. you're most likely to see the rainfall along the coastline for delaware and new jersey. not an all-day rainfall. especially inland areas. tomorrow we'll be drying out. the last showers will come through this evening. heating up to 88 degrees tomorrow afternoon. on wednesday, 82 and a beautiful day for thursday. another round of showers possible forç friday. next weekend, saturday likely to see showers, high of 70. a break from the rain of sunday with another round of showers on monday. then tuesday and wednesday, typical weather for this time of year, upper 70s and low 80s.

back to the philadelphia area from the poconos, there is a crash on the northeast extension southbound. that crash is right near the lansdale exit, exit 31, the right lane is blocked. and i'm hearing there are wait times to get around that of up to an hour. we also have ponding on some of the roadways through our area. i'll have video coming up in just awe few minutes. first, we go to the jersey shore where matt delucia is standing by on the boardwalk. >> no traffic here on the boardwalk. i can tell you that. it's a dreary, gloomy morning in ocean city right now. a lot of people have to come to get their morning pick me up. we'll show you another ocean city favorite, coming up after the break.

day morning at the shore. this morning, we're on the boardwalk at ocean city talking treats. >> and a look at first alert weather radar where you can see the rain is moving through this morning. first alert meteorologist bill henley is talking timing for rain in your neighborhood. ♪ we're taking a look at memorial day events, what is still happening and what has been canceled today. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today" on this memorial day and long holiday weekend. i'm lauren mayk. >> i'm pamela osborne. today is the day we remember those who died serving our country. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert neighborhood forecast. good morning, bill. >> good morning. we're seeing showers in the area. heavy downpours overnight have exited the area, heading towards

the new york area. trenton still seeing showers into northern burlington county. philadelphia, cloudy skies and the clouds are starting to thin out. scattered showers in new jersey. this is where the best chance of seeing showers during the day is in south jersey. i can't rule out more showers in philadelphia as well. you will see through the day, plenty of clouds. that will keep temperatures cooler. 66 in the lehigh valley, 71 in delaware. the suburbs still a few showers around. the clouds will be hanging in there for most of day. might see some thinning of the clouds, noontime, 79 degrees. as you go into the afternoon, there's a chance of more showers for the suburbs and the lehigh valley. through it all, temperatures will stay cooler for most spots. can warm up nicely with breaks in the clouds in the lehigh valley. upper 70s with a chance of showers for delaware, philadelphia will likely see showers and they will extend into the suburbs during the afternoon hours. 79 degrees, that's interior new

jersey. at the shore, cloudy skies, rainy, temperatures in the 60s during the day today. we'll take you through it hour by hour with the futurecast when i'm back in ten minutes. let's see how the roads are looking now after the big downpours overnight. katy zachry has first alert traffic. significant ponding left other from the downpours that went through our area over night. 295 was reporting ponding, 76 eastbound near the exitç for 3h street and finally we have a look at ponding on 95 nearing the philadelphia international airport. it's bleeding out a little bit into the left-hand lane. it's primarily confined to the shoulder. hopefully that will recede. before we get the next batch of big rain coming through in just a few hours as bill said. we have a crash we're follow on the northeast extension southbound. you'll approach the scene as you're making your way to the lansdale exit, route 31. the right lane is blocked. because of that we have volume on the roadways.

potentially people coming back from the poconos early unfortunately because memorial day will be a wash for so many areas. we have a jam time up to an hour on the northbound extension southbound. 95, 76 and the blip, all in the green light. no accidents to report. speeds are around 60 miles an hour, which they normally are. no issues on the pennsylvania majors. finally we are following something in the juniata park section of philadelphia, g street in wyoming avenue. emergency crews are out there. they have not yet cleared the vehicle from that intersection. just be aware of that. pam? >> thank you, katy. we're following breaking news in philadelphia. a car crash and then a rescue under dangerous conditions. you're looking live at the area of g street and wyoming avenue. that's where the car crashed into a pole just before 4:30 this morning. the impact brought down live wires across the car.

you're looking at the man inside of that car who is now safe. he had to wait until peco crews and firefighters gave medics the okay to take him to the hospital and be checked out. power company and crews are still on the scene investigating. it is not going to be a perfect day at the shore today. there is one thing that will make it so much better, rain or shine. treats. treats on the boardwalk. nbc 10's matt delucia is live on the boardwalk this morning, talking treats. we hope you'll bring us some back. >> i promise i will. at least my photographer will. we were on the boardwalk. it's a little too gloomy out there. we had to come inside for one of the morning treats you will. you need a morning pick me up, cup of joe, coffee. we're at the ocean city coffee company. they just opened the doors here a couple minutes ago. this is their tradition.

they come here every year, have to come here every morning and get their cup of coffee. i have julie here. this is her fourth season working at this place. tell me how exciting it is to get the summer season started. >> it's so exciting. i love working here. we have our regulars that come in every morning who i look forward to seeing. it's a great place on the boardwalk. we have a great product. >> how important is it when you get this summer season going? i know the weather isn't that great out there right now but people still need their morning cup of coffee. >> yes, that's true. we roast it right here. people can get their coffee. >> what do you like about the shore for summer? >> i love how busy it is and all the people it brings into town. it's nice to have it quiet for a little bit but when it gets busy, it's awesome. >> how have the crowds picked up since memorial day weekend.

decorating contest as well. count on nbc 10 to keep you up to date on any cancellations or changes for events this memorial day. use the nbc 10 app to make your plans around today's weather in your neighborhood. now to decision 2016. democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders is giving nbc 10 his take on the party's national convention in philadelphia. i spoke with senator sanders by phone yesterday and i asked him about the convention and the demonstrators supporting him who are already planning to show up. >> do you think it's going to be a peaceful convention? >> of course it will. i think some of the media and some of my opponents are trying to suggest otherwise. but the american people have a right to stand up and fight for what they believe in. that's what the constitution is about and how a campaign rejects all forms of violence and intimidation.

>> and senator sanders is campaigning in california which holds its primary june 7th, the same day as new jersey. i asked if he is coming back to new jersey before the primary. he says he would like to if his schedule allows. and that he thinks he has a shot to win that state. democratic white house front-runner hillary clinton plans to hold at least two campaign events in new jersey this week. on wednesday, she'll rally voters in newark. on thursday, she'll campaign at mercer couç county community c in windsor. donald trump says illegal immigrants are treated better than veterans in the united states. trump said the veterans affairs secretary doesn't care about long wait times. trump also criticized hillary clinton for not being tough enough on the v.a.

now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> clouds rain, storms, heavy downpours overnight. most of the area looking at cloudy skies. still showers at the shore. that's the view from north wildwood, new jersey this morning. the rain will continue, especially at the shore. look at the spotty showers inland and new jersey. it's tapered off in wilmington and philadelphia after those big downpours overnight. katy zachry mentioned flooding, ponding on the roadways. there's more moisture moving up through new jersey. look at the delaware beaches. a rainy start. more showers and possibly thunderstorms coming up from the south. remnants of tropical storm bonnie. bonnie is a tropical depression. lots of moisture suspended in the atmosphere. look at the futurecast. the rain, especially in new jersey at the shore and inland areas finally reaches into the philadelphia area late this morning. that's light rain for

philadelphia. as we go into the afternoon, it will be spotty rainfall in philadelphia. the steadier rainfall is going to be at the shore. that's going to keep most shore communities in the 60s today. mostly cloudy skies, a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the day but not an all-day rainfall for philadelphia, the suburbs or the lehigh valley. a little bit warmer in the lehigh valley. you may see breaks in the clouds. a break from the showers at times in new jersey, first thing this morning but as the morning progresses into the afternoon hours you're more likely to see rain and a chance of scattered thunderstorms. showers at the shore, 60s and low 70s. wilmington, a chance of low showers and thunderstorms. cloudy skies and 79 degrees for wilmington but as we go into the late morning and early afternoon hours, we're likely to see some showers there as well. we'll have to deal with the dreary conditions today. there is drier weather ahead. i have your ten-day outlook when i come back. thanks, bill. we'll certainly look forward to

60s in the lehigh valley. the suburbs, delaware and philadelphia are in the very low 70s. some 70s at the shore but right on the coast, right on the beach, it's going to stay in the 60s for most of the day. talleyville, 69 degrees. 67 in limestone road, 70 degrees for harmony hills. the delaware beaches, it's raining right now in rehoboth and dewey beach. it will be a steady rain for much of the day. big downpours move through philadelphia overnight. they move out at 25 miles an hour. we're watching to the south. you can see the rain that's back in cape may. there's the rain for the delaware beaches. there's more of this on the way. it's all coming up off of bonnie, tropical depression bonnie pumping moisture into the atmosphere. it's coming right up the east coast and the chances of rain going to stay with us through the day. it's more likely at the shore. futurecast showing that rain for ship bottom and atlantic city, philadelphia seeing scattered showers. as we go into the afternoon

hours, we could see more showers and possibly thunderstorms develop but it's not going to be an all-day rainfall. that's 4:00 this afternoon. some scattered showers in the lehigh valley and the suburbs. but by far the steadiest rain is going to be at the shore. that's çtoday. tomorrow we're drying out and heating up to 88 degrees. back to normal for wednesday and thursday. we should be in the upper 70s to low 80s this time of year. cooler on friday, showers are likely to come in on friday and stick around into sunday -- saturday, rather. by sunday we'll get breaks of sunshine. by sunday night we could see more showers in the area that carry into monday. this is light shower activity. the steadiest stuff will be here on saturday. we're drying out for tuesday and wednesday. all right, bill, thanks a lot for that. a wet start to our monday means wet roads out there. >> it's causing trouble we've seen throughout the morning. katy zachry joining us live with word of a crash on 76. >> i am following a crash on 76

eastbound right near montgomery drive. it's just out of our camera's view. i can tell you that the right shoulder is blocked as a result of it. again, 76 eastbound right near montgomery drive. shoulder is blocked but as you saw from that live traffic camera, there are very few cars on the roadways. as long as you stay in the center lane or left lane, you shouldn't have any issue around that. most recently a crash reported in abington township, susquehanna road at valley road. finally, look outside in new jersey, in cherry hill, 295 at route 70. if you're headed back from the shore early this morning because unfortunately many of your plans may be awash because of the rain in our future, the garden state parkway, ac expressway, new jersey turnpike, everything is free and clear of any issues. coming up, a check of the

traffic headed northbound on the parkway, potentially leaving the shore early because of the rain we're expecting later today. this is 95 near the philadelphia international airport where you can see ponding has bled into the roadway there. no issues to report on this stretch. i'm following a crash from the northeast extension southbound. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather. >> tracking showers, especially at the shore. look at ocean city, new jersey. a dreary, rainy start to the day. and there's more on the way, coming up from the south. scattered showers inland. the heavy downpours we saw move through philadelphia and trenton have pushed to the northeast. most of the day it will be cloudy skies. there will be more showers and a chance of a thunderstorm for philadelphia and areas farther to the northeast. that chance of showers will finally move out here, over here overnight and it looks like we'll be drier. much drier for tomorrow.
