>> neighbors call police to check on a philadelphia home. nothing suspicious was found, then 36 hours later, the beaten body of a 77-year-old man is discovered on his living room floor. >> and here's something you probably haven't experienced before. united airlines plane falls apart during a bumpy ride. maybe you have experienced it. >> not like that. i've never experienced a bumpy ride like that. >> good morning, welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson. let's again with meteorologist bill henley in the first alert weather center. >> getting close to sunrise, seeing some of the scattered clouds in the area. the suburbs, 64 degrees. clouds over philadelphia, fewer, 68 degrees right now. it's the fog that's a main issue this morning in new jersey and in delaware where it is dense in the wilmington area. the lehigh valley, just a few scattered clouds and 67 degrees.
for wilmington right now, the temperatures in the 60s, cooled down enough to create the fog this morning. we will see the numbers climb and the fog disappear. 71 degrees at 8:00. the fog will be gone. we'll see sunshine and a quick warmup to 78 degrees. that's 11:00 this morning. it will be another warm day. even though the humidity is running high this morning, those numbers will be coming down as the temperatures come up. 87 for the lehigh valley. look at philadelphia at 86 degrees. and the only cool spot will be at the shore when it warms into the middle 70s today. i'll go through the forecast hour by hour with the futurecast to show you when this wet weather -- this fog will disappear. you can see it's cooling down now in marshaltown, 64 degrees, middle 60s, lewes and rehoboth. we'll see sunshine in each of these locations. this fog won't last. quarter mile visibility right now for wilmington, down to half a mile in millville. jessica boyington maybe seeing some of that on some of her cameras but not all of them.
>> we do have a few problems out there also just to boot. atlantic city, we're watching an accident on the expressway. no big backups or delays right now. do watch out for crews trying to get this situation under control. here's route 309 around norristown road. even difficult to see now some of that police activity moved out of the way. headed northbound, there's an accident scene into the right-hand lane. we just wanted to look at this to see if there was backup approaching that scene. all northbound traffic is where you see taillights moving towards that scene. no problems or delays there because of that accident scene and some construction. 95 northbound ramp to the blue route is closed typically until about 5:00 this morning. we'll check in again in the next ten minutes or so to see if that clear. otherwise, the southbound drive time, different part of 95, woodhaven road to center city, a 12-minute trip. more updates when i'm back in ten. breaking news, police tell us an uber driver hit and killed a woman walking in north philadelphia. the crash happened at 23rd and
ridge, just before 1:30 this morning. police say the victim walked into the middle of the street from between two parked cars. the woman who appears to be in her 40s or 50s did not have identification on her, so police are trying to figure out who she is. authorities say the driver did stay at the scene. and we're also following breaking news of a crash and shooting in north philadelphia involving an off-duty police officer. nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us at the scene right outside temp hospital where the crime tape is still up. i understand the officer shot at a driver after being hit. tell us more. >> that's right, vai. the off-duty philadelphia police officer was riding his motorcycle, this motorcycle that's bea positioned on the corner behind me. he was rying it home after his shift when police say he was hit by a car along broad street right at tioga in front of temple university hospital. the car kept going. that officer, we're told, fired several shots at it and one of
those bullets hit a window in this area where we're focused on. right at temple university hospital. no one inside the hospital was hit by the bullet or injured by what happened outside. police say the car that crashed into the officer's motorcycle is a green older model sedan with at least two people inside. the driver and at least one passenger and it likely has front end damage. they are looking for that vehicle right now. the impact from the crash threw the officer from his bike. the car's driver did not stop. the vehicle kept going and that's when eyewitnesses tell us, the officer went for his gun. >> and the motorcycle was coming down here and they came down here and turned in front of the motorcycle. the car hit the motorcycle and it flipped over. the girls kept on going. the police officer started shoot at them and the car took off down here. >> we spoke with some of the investigate ares that arrived here at the scene. they're being extremely tight
lipped about this one because it involves one of their own, someone from the department who used deadly force. this case is being referred to internal affairs. they're working in conjunction with east detectives who covers this area to look into why this off-duty police officer chose to fire his gun as a result of this car crash. reporting live in north philadelphia, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. five minutes past 5:00 right now. police are looking for the killers who attacked a 77-year-old man in his southwest philadelphia home. they believe the same people came after the victim more than once. the victim's son says his father was in a fight with neighborhood kids on friday and early monday morning, neighbors heard sounds of a struggle from his home on theodore street. police went to the home but saw no signs of problems at the front entrance. the victim's son went to check on him, found the back entrance broken into and him lying on the living room floor. i can't even imagine your
father making 78 years of his life and expecting -- everyone expects their parents to die eventually but not to die like this. it's hurtful. >> police say the victim's van and keys are missing and believed stolen. a deadly discovery in chester county. someone found a woman's body tied to a cinder block in a pond in east coventry township. investigators are still trying to determine who the woman is and how she died but they believe she was killed, then dumped into the pond. they hope these pictures of her jewelry, clothes an a tattoo on her left shoulder will help someone identify her. philadelphia is now among the growing list of cities whose police agencies are rewarding officers for showing restrain the. one example is officer michael edwards. a man threatened to shoot officer edwards in south philadelphia in february. after several verbal and physical attacks from the suspect, the officer used his taser rather than his gun. the philadelphia police department awards its officers a medal of tactical de-escalation. more than 40 philly officers
have received similar awares in the last six months. happening today in montgomery county, the overdose antidote known as narcan will be ready to use at three health centers, in norristown, pottstown and willow grove. they'll be available for residents who don't have insurance or for those who can't afford the pharmacy co-pay. pennsylvania is ranked ninth in the country in drug overdoseç deaths. the nbc 10 digital team spent months on the streets documenting the opioid crisis in our area. look for that report, "generation addicted" right now on the nbc 10 app. cleanup is under way after an american legion post went up in flames. the majority of the roof is gone. crews pumped thousands of gallons of water from the basement and repaired electrical lines that ran next to the building. the memorial day fire destroyed keepsake photos, uniforms and
medals. several people inside the building for a memorial day event were not hurt. investigators are still looking for the cause. a rough ride for passengers on a united airlines flight trying to land at newark airport. >> are you a good flyer? >> i'm a good flyer but i wouldn't have been good in this. >> a passenger took this video inside the plane yesterday. the plane bounced on the runway a couple times before the pilot gave up and took off again. panels from the plane's ceiling fell on to the aisle during the rough landing attempt. no one was hurt. there were cheers when the plane successfully landed 20 minutes later. now your noib first alebc 1 neighborhood weather. >> if you're heading out, look at the fog we're watching. this is the view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. at times yesterday we couldn't
even see beach avenue. there are foggy spots and it's just not at the shore today. stand by for sunshine. it will be a warm one, too. not as hot as yesterday. tops out at 88 in philadelphia. we'll get close to that and the humidity will be dropping. it's pretty high this morning an a pleasant evening. 70s this evening. this morning, though, the wind coming back in off the ocean. that's an easterly wind at 11 miles an hour in atlantic city. that's bringing in the moisture leading to the fog in wilmington. thick fog there right now. and some fog also in millville. though that in just the last minute has improved from half a mile visibility to 2 1/2 mile visibility. still socked in for wilmington. but it's not going to last very long. satellite and the radar, no sign of any showers for us. that will wait until the very end of the week. expect a nice warmup with lots of sunshine. in the lehigh valley, bethlehem, easton, low 80s today. sunshine and 70s for west chester and phoenixville.
an a nice warmup for philadelphia, 86 degrees with sunshine this afternoon. any fog around in south jersey will be disappearing. isolated shower possibility today. but it's really unlikely. more likely you'll see sunshine and 85 degrees. in glassboro, a couple clouds at the shore, those easterly winds continue to keep temperatures cool for the shore communities. for delaware, a nice warmup, too. that easterly shower, not all that likely. 78 degrees with sunshine for dover. ten-day outlook when i'm back in ten minutes. speaking of back, look who's back. >> she's back. >> yes, she's got that special glow that you get when you've been off for almost a week, well rested, that kind of thing. >> i wouldn't go with well rested. it was my birthday this past weekend. there was a lot of staying awake later than 9:00. >> there you go. >> i saw that on instagram. i did. >> happy birthday.

we have less than two months to go until philadelphia hosts the democratic national convention. >> edç rendell is calling on supporters of bernie sanders to consider the big picture. nbc 10 has confirmed the sanders campaign is planning a rally in an area set up for protesters across from the wells fargo center.
it's scheduled for the night before the convention starts. rendell who chairs the convention host committee tells us he hopes those sanders supporters will take the good of the party into account. >> it's my hope that sanders people will tell their delegates and their supporters to be positive, to rally for bernie, to make noise for bernie. but otherwise, do nothing that would help donald trump's electoral chances. >> meantime, rendell blames trump for the dnc's the milli$9 to $10 million deficit in funds for the democratic convention.
ahead in the next half hour, which country calls trump a wise politician. justices declined to hear an pa elle from workers who they say improperly lost their pension and health benefits when the casino, trump taj mahal, declared bankruptcy. lower courts left the cuts in place. in atlantic city's most popular casino will have just one owner. boyd gaming announced it's selling it's 50% stake in the borgata hotel resort to mgm. they will know own all of borgata. boyd will get $900 million plus half of future tax settlements with the city. we just began the deadliest 100 days of the year for teen drivers.
according to aaa that starts on memorial day and runs until labor day. more than 1,000 people die in accidents involving teen drivers during that time. jennifer ryan with aaa says more than half those crashes were caused by three distractions. >> number one was interacting with a passenger, number two was interacting with your cell phone and number three was looking at something in or around the vehicle. >> aaa recommends parents talk to their kids about texting and driving. establish family rules against distracted driving and teach by example. >> you've got to be so careful when you're driving out there. welcome back jessica, wednesday for us, monday for her. it's probably that way for a lot of people commuting today. >> yes. let's check the schuylkill expressway if you're traveling that road this morning. >> three-day workweek doesn't sound that bad this week, vai and tracy. i'm happy to be back. the vine street expressway around the schuylkill expressway looks okay. the vine street expressway, we were dealing with ongoing construction this morning east
and westbound. now you can see we're all clear. no big problems or delays from the vine and no problems right now on the schuylkill in or out of center city. you'll be just fine there if you're headed east or westbound. there is an accident in atlantic city. a little ways away in south jersey on the atlantic city expressway headed eastbound. route 202 looks okay. we're green still with drive times, 11 minutes at the most if you're headed southbound from the schuylkill to route 30 and mass transit doing just fine at least for the most part rightd now. more updates when i'm back in the next ten. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> getting closer to sunrise. you can see the clouds breaking over wilmington. still fog right at the service and some thick fog at the airport in wilmington with temperatures dropping into the 60s. look at cape may, fog there. you can see we're getting closer to sunrise as the sky starts to brighten, the fog will disappear
with sunshine. we'll see a quick warmup from the 60s into the 80s from the inland area. south jersey, wilmington, all in the 60s right now. the pennsylvania suburbs are cooling down right now. no sign of fog for exton at 63 degrees. and 66 in warrenton, new hope is 61 degrees currently. the forecast is calling for 80s and sunshine this afternoon. somerton, 86 degrees. malvern, near 80 today and into the upper 80s for the lehigh valley. bethlehem and easton up to 87 degrees. while vineland is 83 with sunshine at the shore. we'll see that easterly wind that's brought the moisture back this morning. that will stay with us, the easterly wind will. the humidity will drop 78 degrees in atlantic city. even though thick fog for wilmington and dover, we'll see some sunshine and the temperatures will climb into the 80s for wilmington. but cooler for dover and lewes is 77 degrees this afternoon. satellite and radar together, no sign of any showers for us. right now we're looking at clear skies and watching a system to
the west. this is our next chance of wet weather. i don't think it will be here until we get closer to the weekend. shows the system moving toward us over the next couple days. we'll be nice and sunny for thursday afternoon. you can see any low clouds will clear out by noontime tomorrow. that's the line of showers we'll be watching for friday. a chance of showers and thunderstorms will come with that. but for today, no sign of that. in fact, lots of sunshine and a quick warmup into the middle 80s. 78 degrees, not quite as warm tomorrow. plenty of sunshine, then the friday forecast is calling for clouds to come in with a chance of showers and thunderstorms from that system to the west. by saturday, getting a break from the rain. but the clouds will linger saturday night and a chance of showers and thunderstorms sunday, high of 82 degrees. by monday, we're in the low 80s and cooling down for tuesday and wednesday. really pleasant weather ahead. humidity drops for tuesday and wednesday. the temperature comes up just a little bit into the low 80s

5:23. students in philadelphia who are doing their part to put an end to bullying in their schools received a special honor. seth williams hosted the champions of change, awarding trophies and other prizes to 65 students as part of the anti-bullying campaign by the d.a.'s office. a new survey is offering insights for job seekers and landon dowdy is here with details in this morning's cnbc business news. good morning, landon. >> hi there, tracy. good morning. a new study shows while the majority of employees are actively looking for a job, half of employers can't find the workers they need to fill the job vacancies. career builder offers these must knows for job seekers. it may take longer to land the job and companies aren't necessarily done with you if you don't get an offer. more than 50% will re-engage with job candidates.

to sunrise. it's going to lead to another quick warmup, 78 degrees. that's at 11:00 this morning. meantime, there are some areas of fog. in fact, delaware is seeing thick fog, wilmington at the airport, 66 degrees. we can see the clouds are breaking. we will get sunshine and the fog will disappear this morning. we're seeing fog in interior new jersey as well. 62 degrees right now. as it warms up into the middle 80s this afternoon, new jersey will see that fog disappear and any fog at the shore will also disappear with sunshine and 75 degrees. that's a live view from north wildwood, which has just seen the fog thicken up in just the last few minutes. it will not last. we'll get sunshine and the winds that are coming in off the ocean will continue at the shore. that will keep the shore cooler, in the 70s and do away with the f fog. this afternoon we'll be well fast the fog in the middle 80s.
