man opened fire at an apartment complex. now the hunt is on for the gunman. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today" this friday, i'm vai sikahema. >> you said it, this friday, the key word. i'm katy zachry. thanks for joining us. it is just 5:00 a.m. let's get started with meteorologist sheena parveen. she's in the first alert weather center and she has a look at your friday, your weekend and all next week. >> i love those words, friday and the weekend. i was afraid we wouldn't make it but we did and it will be nice to end out the week. this morning, nice conditions already, setting up for us, clear skies right now in philadelphia. this is looking out at citizens bank park. you can see the sun about to come up here. we do expect those clear skies to continue through the afternoon. if your weekend is starting early, good for you, it will be a nice day today. in philadelphia, 60 degrees. the temperature,ç a little coo when you walk outside. just not as chilly as it was yesterday morning. with your new neighborhood weather, the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen for you. temperatures elsewhere are in
the 50s in some spots. pennsylvania suburbs 53 degrees. 48 degrees at some of our new jersey neighborhoods. lehigh valley, coming in 51 degrees. if you're in dover, delaware, your temperature right now 54 degrees and wilmington as we go through the afternoon, or at least the morning hours in the meantime, 61 by 8:00 a.m. by 11:00 a.m. in wilmington, temperature around 69 agrees and sunny. wamer afternoon today. thunderstorms in time for your weekend. i'll show you the timing of that coming up. let's look at the roadways this friday morning with jessica boyington. hey, jessica. >> we're starting on the vine street expressway headed through center city this morning. if you typically take the vine street expressway, you may know that you have to avoid it with ongoing construction. that closes it in between broad street and the schuylkill expressway. right now that construction is not active. we didn't have it all morning. these were our cameras around 8th street. past the scene where the construction starts. you can see all traffic moving along, whether you're headed
westbound towards the schuylkill or eastbound towards 95. no big problems or delays on the vine street expressway. we do have construction out there. this is on martin luther king drive between ben franklin parkway and sweet briar drive. that will be there until 5:00 this morning. which is right now. watch for crews cleaning up the area. jessica, thank you. breaking news just in to nbc 10. an earthquake has hit the palm springs area. the u.s. geological survey says the magnitude 5.1 quake struck about an hour ago. it was centered 20 miles south of rancho mirage. people from san diego and los angeles are reporting that they felt it on social media sites. of course, we'll monitor the situation. stay with nbc 10 and the nbc 10 app for updates on this breaking news. meanwhile, we're following a developing story in ohio this morning. we've learned a sheriff's deputy who was shot by a suspect late
last night has been released from the hospital. police say the female deputy was shot while responding to a report of a domestic situation at an apartment complex in deerfield township. now officers are searching for this 19-year-old man who they believe is the gunman. neighbors are being told to stay in their homes. >> nobody can get in or out. nobody can go home. this is an incredible situation here. >> police say another man was also hurt in the shooting. he's in surgery and is expected to survive. new from overnight, dozens of firefighters were needed to put out a row home fire in philadelphia's nicetown section. authorities say the fire began in one home on north 15th street. just after 2:30 this morning. it then quickly spread to the porches of several nearby homes. four people total were forced out of their houses overnight. fortunately, though, no one was hurt. happening today, a philadelphia woman is in court this morning in florida after she was arrested and charged
with killing her two children. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in the digital operations center to walk us through what happened. this is just so tragic. >> absolutely, vai. sophia hines is charged with two counts of premeditated murder. her family here in philadelphia is talking about the shock upon hearing what happened. wednesday afternoon police in miramar, florida, a suburb of ft. lauderdale, they responded to a 911 call. they found hines' two young kids, a 7-month-old and 3-year-old unconscious. investigators say hines admitted to holding a sheet over the mouthsç of both children suffocating them. hines is from our area. she lives in the frankford neighborhood of philadelphia. we spoke with the father of the infant boy. he said he had no idea that hines was in florida visiting a relative he had no idea about. some family members believe that hines suffered from postpartum depression and may have stopped taking her medication. >> you really just can't judge a book by its cover. because we never, never, never
would have expected her to do this. because the way she loved them kids, we still can't believe it. >> sophia hines is due in court today. the boy's father says that he is trying to get down to florida as soon as possible. for now we're live in the digital operations center, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> matt, thank you. a bus driver faces dui charges after passengers on his bus told police they were terrified during a trip from philadelphia's chinatown to new york city. one of those passengers took this picture on saturday night. police pulled over the focus travel bus in lower makefield, bucks county, after passengers called for officers to help. the driver was arrested and later fired from the bus company. the rider described the trip on the review web side yelp. her post reads in part, he drove so crazily that three times he nearly drove into a wall or
post. the last time everyone thought we'd die because the bus nearly tipped over. this isn't the first time nbc 10 reported trouble with that bus company. last summer focus travel fired a driver after video surfaced of him apparently texting while driving on the new jersey turnpike. i want those of you who have been with me from the beginning on this incredible journey to be the first to know, i'm with her. >> and president obama officially endorsed hillary clinton for president yesterday. the president said he doesn't think there's ever been someone so qualified to hold the office. and hillary clinton got another big endorsement last night. >> it came from massachusetts senator elizabeth warren who's been mentioned as a possible clinton running mate. >> i am ready to get in this fight and work my heart out for hillary clinton to become the next president of the united states and to make sure that donald trump never gets any place close to the white house.
>> warren is one of the leading progressives in the democratic party. senator bernie sanders is not dropping out of the presidential race just yet. he met with president obama at the white house yesterday. he then hosted a campaign rally in washington. sanders spoke about fixing wealthy inequality and the campaign finance system but did not mention hillary clinton. presumptive gop nominee donald trump meanwhile is trying to jump start fund-raising for the general election. >> yesterday trump met with dozens of donors and leading republicans, including new jersey governor chris christie. trump is coming under fire after a report that he doesn't pay his bills. a "usa today" analysis uncovered dozens of lawsuits filed by people who claim that trump and his businesses failed to pay them in full for their work. some of the lawsuits date back to the 1980s. here's trump's reaction. >> i have a great history of paying my bills on time. you're right, if somebody does a poor job, i'm not the quickest pay. if they do a good job, i pay

need it by lunch time and through the afternoon. radar showing us a nice, dry picture here. we'll stay this way through the day today. also with our new neighborhood weather, don't forget your seven-day forecast is always at the bottom of the screen. sunny skies, temperatures near 80 degrees. if you're in the philadelphia area, 80 for university, lansdale, the suburbs, 76 degrees. bethlehem and the lehigh valley coming in near 78 degrees and sunny today. hamilton township, wildwood, if you're heading to the shore, looking good. mid-70s and sunny. delaware along the beach and dewey beach, 77 degrees. wilmington coming in near 80 this afternoon. as we go through the day today, we'll stay warm and dry. this is future weather here. no storms on the way for your friday. saturday will be a different story. we stay warm saturday, mid to upper 80s. by noon we could see showers and storms approaching the philadelphia area. and then another round by 5:00 p.m. there you see that second area heading to the shore by 7:00 p.m.
some of these thunderstorms could be very strong to severe, too. by 8:00, we'll start to see things wind down a little bit and then your sunday looks a lot better. if you're heading to brigantine, today looks good, mid-70s and sunny. by sunday we'll be dry around 82. in wildwood if you're heading there today, mid-70s and sunny, tomorrow, late-day thunderstorms, 81 degrees. again, most of your day along the shore will be dry by sunday around 80 degrees and sunny. cape may, showers and storms later in the day. mid-80s. by sunday looking really good, mid-80s and sunny. if you're extending your weekend into monday, still looking nice and dry. we have a closer look at the rest of the area's weekend neighborhood forecast, coming up. >> sheena, thank you. 5:10. sheena's forecast looks like it will be a nice weekend to go to the shore, right? >> at least for half of it. sunday looks like the better day. >> even one day is good.

who died. the fund-raiser is set for tonight in wynnewood. he suffered a stomach ailment while playing in a police/firefighter ice hockey game in april. he later died at the hospital. he worked in haverford township for five years. a former delaware high school teacher and coach apologized in court for sexually abusing a student. a judge sentenced richard howell on thursday to seven years in prison. back in january, howell pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl. the victim was a student at caesar rodneyç high school whe howell taught and served as the wrestling coach. kent county authorities say howell had several encounters with her at school and at his home two years ago. we have new video of a burning paratransit bus on long island. the driver was transporting a
disabled woman back home from a therapy session yesterday. the driver ran to the back of the bus, grabbed the woman out of her wheelchair, carried her outside before the bus burst into flames. no one was hurt. fire investigators are looking into the cause. you probably heard about the former stanford swimmer who was sentenced to six months for raping a woman. many are outraged by that sentence, saying it's too short. and get this, he may get to leave jail even earlier. authorities say 20-year-old brock turner will only serve half of his sentence if he keeps a clean disciplinary record. he was convicted of attacking an unconscious woman he met at a fraternity party in january of last year. prosecutors who tried the case had asked turner to be sentenced to six years in prison. well, camden is a city that had its share of violence and
poverty. >> the city school district is honoring nearly two dozen high school seniors for excellence and perseverance. one such honoree is done ia kristen. she's lived in 16 homes over six years. her mother died of cancer when she was just 8. donia says she never gave in to peer pressure. she's inspired others through academics and school blood drives. here's her message. >> never give up. there's always a light until the end of the road. you'll never believe it until you see it. >> what a beautiful young woman. as for her future, she hopes to take our jobs and become a tv newscaster. hang on just a little bit. we need to retire first and then you can take our jobs. >> she can intern her. >> she can come and do that this
summer. >> nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington is joining us with a look at the white horse pike. so far, things have been pretty quiet this morning. >> definitely a quiet drive so far. we're still a little bit ahead of the curve there. we don't see big problems until 6:15, 6:30. this is the white horse pike around 295 in new jersey. not a lot of cars on the roads yet. no problem in either direction. take a look at the rest of our majors. 95 southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway is a 14-minute trip. no problems on the schuylkill into center city. that's 12 minutes from the blue route to the vine. average speeds into the 60s. over to the blue route, around route 1. cars moving along just fine with a four-minute drive time, if you're headed to this point, route 1 to 95. speeds into the 60s there. we'll check in with the garden state parkway when i'm back in the next ten. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist sheena parveen.
>> well, good friday morning. cool temperatures to start this morning. maybe not as chilly as it was yesterday morning. it's still cool. 60 in philadelphia, 55 coatesville, 54 wilmington. vineland 48 degrees. trenton 54. atlantic city coming in at 51 degrees. i don't think you'll need a light jacket this morning but it feels comfortable. this afternoon, sunny and warmer as we go through the day. a litdl bit warmer than yesterday. high temperatures if you're in the lehigh valley, kutztown 78 degrees. bethlehem coming in at 74. if you're in the pennsylvania suburbs, 78 degrees for phoenixville, 79 in newtown. plenty of sunshine, even through the philadelphia area where highs will be around 80 degrees for byberry. haddon feel, 77 degrees. along the shore, a great day to start your weekend, 77. avalon coming in close to 80 degrees and sunny. delaware looking at temperatures close to 80 degrees, even in rehoboth beach, 78 degrees there. as we go through the weekend, we'll see a half and half type
of a weekend. thunderstorms on saturday, drier as we go into sunday. we take a look at future weather for you. as we go into today, we don't have to worry about the thunderstorms. the arm air will be here, the sunshine will be here. for saturday, we'll stay warm, mid to upper 80s. look what happens by noon. we could already have a cluster of showers and storms approaching the philadelphia area. another one by 5:00 p.m. which will be extending to the shore later in the evening. and some of that could be pretty strong to severe. we do have a severe thunderstorm threat for saturday. so this means the potential for strong to severe storms does exist. almost all of new jersey, points north and west of philadelphia, we could city storms containing winds, lightning, heavy rain and hail. if you're going to be out and about saturday, keep an eye to the sky. some of the storms could get nasty very quickly. for this weekend, you see the thunderstorms come on saturday. the shore will see them later in the day. most of the day they're not

today target will be holding a job fair in center city for its new store that opens next month. the retailer says dozens of positions are open for its washington square west store on chestnut street. the job fair runs today and tomorrow from 9:00 to 3:30 at the sonesta hotel at 18th and market. there's trouble brewing at some apple stores in the u.s. the tech giant is now taking precautions. landon dowdy is here is with morning's cnbc business news. >> hi there, katy. good morning. apple stores are being targeted by thieves. dressed as employees, they say a store in manhunt has been hit twice, losing 67 iphones worth about 50 grand.
