on day two of the republican national convention donald trump wins his party's presidential nomination. good morning. i'm tracy davidson, live from cleveland and the republican national convention where donald trump is officially the nominee. but last night, it was new jersey governor chris christie who had all the fireworks. in his speech, he got the crowd pretty riled up. we'll tell you about the speech, get reaction off of hillary clinton's reaction to what governor christie said. also, another controversy about another speech. there's a lot to get to today. we'll get to that in a few minutes. vai and katy? >> we'll hear from you in just a bit. thanks. let's get a check on the weather as you head out the door. meteorologist bill henley has more on that with your neighborhood forecast. >> if you want to play it safe or avoid the shine because we have another nice day after a nice day yesterday, sun is up. we have bright sunshine in the city. no sign of clouds there. there have been showers and thunderstorms moving through south jersey. the storms have dissipated, just
a light shower. might need an umbrella toç sta with atlantic city, most of the day it will be dry. scattered clouds in the lehigh valley, bright sunshine for delaware. 60s and 70s, low 60s in the suburbs. now down to 71 degrees and still falling in philadelphia. could go another degree cooler, before we start the warming process into the upper 80s this afternoon. just like yesterday, the humidity stays low. i'll go through the forecast hour by hour when i'm back in a few minutes, jessica boyington is watching the traffic. >> so far, so good on most of our majors, some accidents starting to pop up. this one out on lower merion on lancaster avenue and ardmore avenue. also starting to see some of the first delays of the morning for septa, thorndale train 1512 is running 10 minutes late. that started about 15 minutes ago. watch out for that ripple effect as well. route 42 near route 41 in deptford, new jersey. the northbound lanes are right in here.

america's secrets to keep her own and lying to cover it all up? >> hillary. >> christie wrapped up with a call to defeat clinton and make donald trump the next president. trump officially won the republican party's nomination last night. the delegation from his home state of new york put him over the top. and gop delegates embraced christie's speech, including local delegates from new jersey and pennsylvania. i talked with them right after the speech. >> i think christie hit it home. he's in the best form possible in front of a crowd setting forth the reasons why hillary clinton should not be elected president of the united states. >> the governor was motivational. he was stark. he drew a stark contrast between the choices that we have to make. he gave a great speech. >> those are just two of the reviews of governor christie's takedown of hillary clinton last
night. clinton tweeted out this response to christie's criticisms, if you think chris christie can lecture anyone on ethics, we have a bridge to sell you. then it linked to an article of the bridgegate scandal. she compared watching the rnc to "the wizard of oz." there was even a fog machine. when you pulled back the curtain, it was just donald trump with nothing to offer to the american people! >> clinton also repeated her previous criticisms of donald trump's bankruptcies in atlantic city saying they caused destruction in the resort town. another of donald trump's former primary rival, former republican presidential candidate ben carson also addressed the delegates and associated clinton with the devil.ç during his speech, carson said one of clinton's mentors wrote a book dedicated to lucifer. >> so are we willing to elect
someone as president who has as their role model somebody who acknowledges lucifer? think about that. >> carson also criticized what he called clinton's secular progressive agenda. for a time last night, videos from the rnc, the gop convention ended up on vice president joe biden's twitter account. twitter says the tweets came from a twitter mirror tablet that was used recently at a cancer event. a technique al glitch kept it from logging out of biden's account. the tweets were eventually deleted. mike pence is one of the people scheduled to speak tonight and a new nbc news survey monkey poll just out this morning finds that trump's running mate is not very well known with american slow theers. just under half of registered voters asked said they didn't know enough about pence to say whether they have a favorable or unfavorable rating of him and little more than half says they couldn't say whether he was a good choice for vice president. that could obviously change

dangerous and volatile situation. >> nbc 10's matt delucia has new details on an explosives investigation going on this morning. he is live at police headquarters. what can you tell us? >> vai and katy, philadelphia police are trying to figure out what this man's motives are for having those explosives and fireworks in his van. this was just before 10:00 last night. police showed up to 20th and champlo champlost. that mini van was double parked. when officers went up, they noticed a strong smell of marijuana. the bomb squad was called out, one of the more troubling discoveries to them was that some of these devices were homemade. >> we don't know. we don't know if he had any mishs intent or if he was going to use them for some type of fireworks. he will be investigated not only by northwest detectives but also our bomb squad personnel will do a thorough investigation to
determine where not only he got these explosive devices but what he intended to do with them. >> those are the big questions this morning, that 31-year-old, he was arrested and facing several charges this morning. those fireworks and explosives were confiscated and of course police already have their radar up as far as explosives are concerned. they say any time somebody has found explosives in their vehicles it raises alarms. of course with the democratic national convention coming to town next week, it is also especially alarming. they want to figure out what these motives were,ç if this ce was malicious or not. we'll let you know what comes from this investigation. for now, though, i'm live at philadelphia police headquarters. matt delucia, nbc 10 news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> eight minutes after 6:00. look at this, sunshine, nice and bright in delaware. that's a live view from frawley stadium. sunny skies, a warm afternoon.
things are looking cooler to start with. 60s in trenton, mt. holly and vineland. 60s degrees in allentown. that may go down another degree for wilmington. these numbers are lower than yesterday, down by 5 degrees in allentown. 7 degrees cooler in trenton. mt. holly, 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. wilmington is 1 degree warmer. starting to see that sunshine take effect. these numbers from the 60s to the 70s, into the 80s this afternoon. but no sign of any 90s today. clear skies for the lehigh valley, the suburbs, delaware after storms overnight. we saw showers and thunderstorms in new jersey, now just a few sprinkles, light rainfall in atlantic city. it's just clearing ocean city right now. you'll see sunshine at the shore with just a slight chance of a repeat this afternoon. the hour by hour forecast shows scattered showers, that's 1:00 this afternoon. really isolated stuff. most of the day you'll find dry conditions and a nice warmup, too. 80s for philadelphia, for the

i'm tracy davidson. live from cleveland at the republican national convention, where just hours ago donald trump was made officially the nominee for the party. delegates from his home state of new york put him over the top. he thanked delegates via video from new york. >> it's something i will never be ever forget. >> trump will deliver his acceptance speech in cleveland on thursday night. trump's son won praise for his speech. but he was criticized in a daily
show tweet that part of the address was plagiarized from a book speech writer frankç buckley, comparing the school system to soviet russia. buckley confirmed to nbc news that trump jr. had his preapproval to use the comment this follows criticism of trump's wife melania of her apparent lifting of lines from michelle obama's 2008 convention speech. along with the newsmakers, our nbc 10 crews are staying side by side with the delegates. this is val degorgio, chair of chester gop with rob lofry. they are excited to be so up front, one delegate told me he's

vine street expressway. a little bit of a slow go into center city. there's an accident in limerick thorndale 516 running ten minutes late, ten minutes coming out of the west trenton and doylestown line. i'll have updates when i come back. i'm tracy davidson, live from cleveland. the republican national convention heads into its third night tornado. some of donald trump's former rivals will take the stage as will his running mate. the theme tonight is make america first again. ted cruz, marco rubio and scott walker will speak. also taking to the podium are trump's son, eric, former house speaker newt gingrich and vice presidential candidate mike pence. last night, chris christie riled up the delegates with a lit inform what he called leadership failures by trump's epointen,
hillary clinton. take a listen. >> it is our obligation to stop hillary clinton and never let her get within ten miles of the white house again. >> the former prosecutor spelled out his charges against clinton and the crowd responded by repeatedly shouting lock her up. later, christie told nbc 10's lauren mayk why he made the speech so much about clinton. >> because she's the democratic nominee for president, the person we have to beat. >> but why not talk more about donald trump? >> i spoke plenty about him over the months. when i speak about donald trump, people say i speak too much about donald trump. i'm not going to be criticized and questioned by anybody who has never stood up there and done it.
>> christie says he will continue to work to get trump elected. he told us he feels good about the campaign. as for whether christie may be under consideration for a possible cabinet position, the governor told us, quote, that's for me to know and you to find out. now that trump is officially the nominee, will there finally be party unity? >> it is time to come together and make sure that donald trump is the next president of the united states. >> governor christie ended his mock trial speech last night by saying it's time to come together. after the chaos that started the convention with the never trump delegates and the rumblings prior to the roll call yesterday, with donald trump now the official nominee, is the presidency in sight? gop chair george gilmore. >> there are bumps along the way, the democrats have as well. i think the republicans are united. i think we'll do well throughout the country. >> how important is unity moving forward?
>> unity is always important. >> reporter: the pennsylvania delegate disagrees with the focus on unity. >> as they look at these conventions you can't win. do you want an infomercial or honest exchange of ideas with an occasional disagreement? that's what this is. >> there's been more unity coming out of the convention. >> reporter: joe watkins told me unity isn't the most important thing. >> all that really matters is who wins on election day. you don't necessarily need to have a unified party to win, especially if you're able to draw from independents and democrats. >> >> reporter: democratic presumptive nominee hillary clinton said in a tweet, the republican party platform is so hateful you'd think donald trump wrote it himself. today's "new york daily news." it says, full steam ahead, it's official, gop is all abroad on the trump train.
we have more still to come from cleveland. for now, tracy davidson, live at the republican national convention. vai and katy? >> thanks so much. the republican national convention is in full swing. it will soon be the democrats' turn in philadelphia. pamela osborne has an update on the preparations happening today and over the next few days for the dnc. she's live at the philadelphia museum of art where we can't help but notice all the donkeys around town. right, pam? >> yes. it's not all serious. there's a little bit of fun involved here as well. we've been walking past these for a couple weeks now. we've been seeing them around town. very soon, beginning tomorrow, spotting these guys could help you win pretty cool prizes like a two-night stay in a philly hotel. the host committee will tell us how the donkeys around town scavenger hunt will work later this morning. it will be easier to get around town than when the pope was here
but there still will be road closures that we have to deal with. here's a map of the closures, most in south philly. broad industrial will be closed from packer to the navy yard. roads begin shutting down on saturday as preps to get the wells fargo center ready continue. the air force one fuselage replica is in place at the convention center and crews are working to install a replica of the oval office there as well. the host committee is heading up politicalfest, which will give visitors a yew neeshg chance to se celebrate and explore history. as for the road closures, what they are specifically, we have a full list of those on our website, nbc10.com. reporting live this morning, on the art museum steps, pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. >> pamela, thank you. get ready for a price hike if you drive on the pennsylvania turnpike.
the commission chairman says the price hike of 6% is due to the cost of rebuilding and widening roads. it's part of the newly approved ten-year, $5.77 billion spending plan. that means the average toll will go up from $1.16 to $1.23 for e-z pass users. cash customers will pay more. the increase begins after midnight january 7th. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> 6:37. we have a beautiful start to the day. 71 degrees in philadelphia. mostly sunny skies right now. and the humidity, like yesterday, will be staying low. a little bit of a northeasterly breeze at 9 miles an hour. at 10:00 this morning, it will be 79 degrees, then into the low to mid-80s this afternoon. for the suburbs, sunny skies already. 64 degrees to start with. into the low 80s by lunch time. low 80s continue this afternoon. with just a 3 mile-an-hour breeze. it's still out of the north just enough to keep our humidity low and you'll feel the difference

i'm tracy davidson, live in cleveland where last night speaker after speaker denounced donald trump's rival hillary clinton. no one did it better than new jersey governor chris christie who at one point referenced a case he called personal to him and other people in new jersey. >> now we go to cuba.
hillary clinton supported concessions to the castro brothers and got almost nothing in return for ending the embargo. she supported a deal that didn't even require this murderous regime to return a cop killer, joanne chesimard to face justice. see, i know about this personally. joanne chesimard murdered a new jersey state trooper in cold blood, fled to cuba and lives there under cuban protection to this very day. >> christie has called for the return of joanne chesimard to new jersey to serve out her time for the 1973 killing of trooper james harper. she escaped from prison in 1979 and fled to cuba. among those watching governor christie's speech, his son andrew. like many delegates in the hall, he gave his father rave reviews. >> he did an outstanding job. >> had you heard the speech before. >> i read it a couple times. >> did it sound tonight as it

it will be a beautiful day in the lehigh valley. philadelphia, nothing but sunshine in this view from center city. the temperatures will be climbing into the 80s after a little bit of a cooler start this morning. at the shore, actually seeing showers this morning. north wildwood, new jersey, the skies are starting to break. you'll see sunshine there. 60 right now in the lehigh valley. not much warmer in the suburbs. look at the 60s now in delaware. it's dropped to 68 degrees in new castle county. 71 degrees in philadelphia. there are cool spots. parkside is 66, even cooler for andorra and chestnut hill. somerton is at 62 degrees right now. these 60s and 70s will warm into the 80s this afternoon but through the day today, the humidity stays low. we still have a little bit of a breeze oust the north, inland areasç you'll feel that just enough to keep the dry air coming in. at the shore, a sea breeze will be developing. that will keep temperatures cooler at the shore. that's today. soaring temperatures on the way after we get a nice break from
the heat and humidity again today. by the end of the week we're looking at temperatures well into the 90s for philadelphia, dover and the lehigh valley. even wildwood will hit 90 degrees on saturday. with that heat will come more humidity. that's this weekend that the temperatures will really take off. this morning, we've seen rain drops move through the atlantic city area. they're offshore now, only a slight chance of another shower developing during the day. mainly dry and warm for philadelphia and the suburbs, the lehigh valley, really comfortable day in new jersey. 86 degrees in pemberton. a slight chance of a pop-up shower in ocean city or atlantic city. most of the day will be dry, cape may 81 degrees. wilmington warms to 86 degrees this afternoon. hold on to your thermometer. it's going to be climbing tomorrow, 92 degrees after another pleasant start. we'll be in the 60s tomorrow morning. no sign of the 60s or cool temperatures for friday, saturday and sunday.

viola street. the mans was going to his car when he was shot multiple times. and in west oak lane, a man and woman were talking to a nearby restaurant around 1:00 this morning when they heard a fight at wister streetç and fenton avenue. the two tried to run away but the man was shot. we're told he should be okay. the gunman is on the loose. new details into an explosives investigation into a philadelphia neighborhood. nbc 10's matt delucia is live at police headquarters in center city with more. matt? >> this man was found with fireworks and homemade explosive devices in his van. this was just before 10:00 last night. philadelphia police went up to this car, thismini van that was double parked at champlost. they smelled marijuana coming from the van and also found two
