73 degrees outside. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm katy zachry. thanks for joining us. if you've walked outside you've noticed there's a little bit of a cooler feel to the air. >> a little bit. >> let's start with meteorologist bill henley with more on that. >> no sign of showers, though we do have clouds this morning. they're over philadelphia. you can see them in the suburbs. 69 degrees. it is cooler this morning. a few degrees cooler, also for the lehigh valley and delaware and that may lead to a bit of fog. right now, delaware is fog-free but clouds overhead. those clouds break for some sunshine. in fact, more sunshine by 10:00 this morning, 76 degrees. topping out into the low 80s this afternoon. there's still a chance of an isolated shower in the suburbs, the lehigh valley, possibly even a thunderstorm and a shower this afternoon. it's possible in delaware but most of the day will be dry and we'll get to see sunshine, especially this afternoon. i'll go through the forecast hour by hour when i'm back in a few minutes.
right now let's see how the traffic is moving or if it's moving. jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. >> when we were watching the schuylkill expressway. this is through center city over around the vine street expressway on ramp. you can actually see traffic is moving along nicely. westbound drive time. if you're headed towards the king of prussia area, 12 minutes from the vine street expressway at this point to the blue route. speeds still well into the 60s also. reports of a road obstruction. this could be a few things, water main break, a downed pole, downed tree. no details on that yet. we know the road is obstructed in lower merion, bryn mawr avenue and old gulph road. no big problems there, the tacony palmyra and the burlington bristol clear of any openings right now. we'll keep you updated on that even i'll be back in ten. we are following breaking news into the nbc 10 newsroom. a deadly hit and run there atlantic county, police tell us an suv hit and killed a woman while crossing the white horse
pike at 6th avenue and galloway township. the deadly crashç happened arod 10:30 last night. witnesses told police, the suv ran a red light, hit the woman and kept going. the police are looking for a silver older model chevy tahoe or suburban. monsignor william lynn could move a step closer to freedom today. prosecutors are deciding whether or not to retry the former church official. last month, the pennsylvania supreme court upheld a ruling that lynn deserved a new trial. lynn has already served three years in prison for helping to protect priests accused of sex abuse. the time is 5:32. now to decision 2016. presidential nominees donald trump and pennypack park are back on the campaign trail. pamela osborne is live in our digital operations center with more on that. trump just spoke at a rally near harrisburg. tell us more. >> tracy, at that rally donald trump blasted bernie sanders for supporting hillary clinton.
he even told ralligoers he was afraid this election might be rigged. meantime, hillary clinton was stumping in omaha, nebraska with billionaire supporter warren buffett. take a listen to what both candidates had to say yesterday. >> he made a deal with the devil. she's the devil. he made a deal with the devil. >> while warren is standing up for a fairer tax code, trump wants to cut taxes for the super rich. clinton will be campaigning in colorado today while trump visits virginia. she's leading in a new poll. this as a new cnn poll shows clinton making gains following the democratic national convention. it shows her leading donald trump by nine points. 52% to 42%. within i see you again at 6:30, i'll break down the results of a brand new nbc poll and we'll talk about trump's remarks to the father of a muslim american soldier killed while fighting for the u.s. reporting live in the digital operations center, i'm pamela
osborne, nbc 10 news. meantime, more republicans are stepping forward to denounce donald trump's comments about the muslim parents of a fallen u.s. soldier. >> that includes pennsylvania senator pat toomey who's been fighting to get re-elected in november. yesterday, toomey said the khan family like all americans who lose loved ones in the defense of our country deserve our gratitude and honor. anything else is inappropriate. but toomey's democratic opponent katie mcginty says those words are not enough. she respond, until pat toomey pledges to oppose donald trump in november, his carefully crafted statements about our nation's veterans and armed forces are completely hollow. the nbc 10 digital team is on the campaign trail. they were with donald trump in pennsylvania last night after following hillary clinton over the weekend. you can get their firsthand insight on the nbc 10 app. >> investigators are trying to figure out what caused a fire that destroyed the colucci
lumber company in malaga. the owners are pondering whether or not to rebuild. >> there's still smoke coming up. so not thinking that far ahead. >> a lot of people don't want to go to millville to home depot to get a pound of nails. >> the owner told us two metal safes an a metal filing cabinet protected important business documents from being destroyed in the fire. >> a group of citizens want to endç illegal parking in the middle of broad street in south philadelphia. city officials enforced the ban during the democratic national convention. as of last night, things were back to normal with cars parked in the median. the political action company fifth square wants too change that. the group's online petition showed at least 1,000 people asking the city to enforce the
median parking ban to make sure streets are safe are for pedestrians. mayor jim kenney's office said a public dialogue must be held before any change. >> i spend 20 minutes sometimes looking for parking down here. >> as long as people in south philly own cars it will be a real problem. >> we did find one homeowner who said he signed the petition agreeing that median parking on south broad street is dangerous. in the new jersey transportation fund fight, a leading lawmaker is accused governor chris christie of auditioning for donald trump in opposing a higher state gas tax. senate president steve sweeney said he thinks christie is stalling on the state's transportation crisis to help his chances of winning a spot in the trump administration. sweeney's comments came yesterday after the senate failed to move legislation forward that would raise the gas tax by 23 cents while getting rid of the estate tax. the governor supports a bill in the state assembly that also
raises the gas tax but lowers the sales tax. christie's office put out a statement saying the governor is committed to reaching an amicable solution with legislative leaders that puts people to work, funds infrastructure investments and represents tax fairness for all the people of new jersey. 5:37 and the city of philadelphia is trying to decrease accidental shootings involving children by giving away gun locks. you can pick up one today or tomorrow, no questions asked. officials will be at rhodes play ground at 75th and lansdowne avenue tonight from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. the giveaway continues tomorrow at 32nd and cumberland street. last night, philadelphia city council passed a law requiring the safe storage of gun s in homes where kids live. tonight is national night out. i'm getting ahead of myself. >> in montgomery county they got ahead of themselves. they had an early start. josh shapiro was there at the
prenight out. members from several police departments from across the county hung out with neighbors, enjoyed live entertainment and there were also carnival rides. millions of people in all 50 states are expected to participate in tonight's national night out featuring block parties, cookouts and parades. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. 5:38 and cloudy this morning. muggy, too. that mugginess will linger. the clouds will break for sunshine. the temperatures in the upper 70s at noontime, 79 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon. there is a chance, just a slight chance of on isolated shower during the day today. 70 right now in the suburbs. clouds linger this morning. mostly cloudy at lunch time. by this afternoon, a shower is
possible. we'll also get breaks of sunshine into the upper 70s today. the lehigh valley, clouds overhead, 72 degrees to start with. come down a little bit. still cloudy through the morning and into the afternoon with some late-day breaks of sunshine. might see a brief shower in the lehigh valley. new jersey will get some sunshine breaking through the clouds after a cloudy start, 71 degrees by lunch time. 76 degrees and the winds at 8 miles an hour. they'll be stronger at the shore this afternoon. those are 15 mile-an-hour winds. that's an onshore flow that will keep temperatures cooler at the shore. you will see some sunshine, a slight chance of the daytime shower at the jersey shore. and delaware, you're in for some afternoon sunshine. a cloudy start this morning. 76 degrees at 10:00. by noontime, more sunshine. and then into the very low 80s this afternoon. there is a chance of an isolated shower during the afternoon hours. that chance of showers will be decreasing over the next couple days, along with something else,
too. got the t10 day on 10 when i'm back in a few minutes. >> bill, thanks. just about 20 minutes before 6:00. let's get you to work on this tuesday morning. a check of the roads. >> jessica boyington is standing by. jess, what are you watching now? >> we're watching 95. we look okay, especially if you're approaching the delaware area. this is 95 around the naamans road exit or so, southbound from the blue route towards this point still only a six-minute trip. we pretty much look the same with speeds into the 60s there as well. no problems on 95. also watching a road obstruction reported out in lower merion on bryn mawr avenue and old gulph road. out in burlington township, we still have a closure because of an earlier downed pole. you can follow the detours through there. over in cherry hill, we still look great. no big problems or delays in either direction. just a couple of cars out on the roads and as for mass transit, everything is pretty much still running on time or close to schedule. i'll have more updates for you.
we'll check in with 95 again, reports of something beginning on around cottman avenue. tonight is a question of tolls for replacement bridge on 95 will be up for discussion after a public hearing. the scudder falls bridge spans the delaware river between ewing river, mercer county. tonight's hearing in easton will focus on new toll rates for replacement bridge. the delaware river joint toll commission is proposing a $1.25 per vehicle with e-z pass. memorialized. hear what the owners of the orlando nightclub where dozens of people were shot and killed are planning for the site when it could re-opens. re-opens.

>> wills eye expanded its range of innovative research. a delaware school dedicated to training early childhood teachers will get a visit from governor markell today. governor jack markell and the u.s. secretary of education will go to delaware technical community college. it's one of 20 states that received a grant of more than $1 billion in the race to the top early learning challenge. the goal is to provide high quality ea quality eaducation. the owners of a major pest control firm will pay millions to a family sickened by a banned pesticide during their vacation. the parent company of terminix agreed to pay $87 million. they were injured after exterminators sprayed the pesticide inside a condo just below theirs in the u.s. virgin islands. steve eisman was left paralyzed.
terminix admitted to sprague the gas that was banned for indoor use in the '80s. a 5-year-old delaware county boy is dead after being struck by lightning in north carolina. steven little and his family were on vacation when thunderstorms rolled in while they were on a #each along the outer banks over the weekend. police tell us the boy was with his father outside of their car and about to get inside when lightning hit the lansdowne boy in the chest. the family rushed the little boy down the beach to meet up with emergency crews. >> our crews took over, performed advanced life support. this is a wonderful family that came here just seeking a wonderful time for vacation and, unfortunately, a horrific event transpired. >> steven suffered traumatic burns and went into cardiac arrest. he later died at a hospital in virginia beach. today the cleanup continues in a small maryland town after a deadly storm and heavy rain caused devastating flash flooding, leading to more than 100 water rescues and leaving two people dead.
>> this is what it looks like now after the water sided in ellicott city. six inches of rain fell in just over two hours, overwhelming small streams, causing water to surge down main street. a group of people even formed a human chain to save a woman trapped in her car. one of the people killed in that flooding is from pennsylvania. 35-year-old jessica watsula of lebanon died when her car got swept away by the floodwaters. her pastor tells us she leaves behind a 10-year-old daughter. >> she lived for her daughter. and her daughter was very, very close to her mother. >> reverend kover says watsula who volunteered in the church nursery was visiting ellicott city with her family. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> cloudy skies this morning. we'll be watching for a shower
during the day. but most of the day it's dry. this is the view from center city, from philadelphia, cape may marina. skies are breaking. going to see some sunshine. sunshine will be enough to warm us into the low 80s this afternoon. right now, 69 degrees in the suburbs. low 70s for the lehigh valley, delaware, philadelphia and south jersey, 71 degrees right now. uniform temperatures, no real cool spots. piney hollow is 69 degrees and 72 in cinnaminson, 68 in princeton this morning. a cool start, a muggy start, too. no sign of any showers just yet. that's a possibility. some isolated showers are possible during the day today. possibly even a thunderstorm but most of the day it is going to be dry. as the day goes on, we'll get sunshine, 80 degrees in philadelphia. this afternoon, the suburbs will see breaks of sunshine, a slight chance of a shower in the suburbs or even in the lehigh valley. but most of the day will be dry. clouds lingering in the lehigh valley into the noontime hour
for delaware, upper 70s to near 80 degrees this afternoon. a late-day shower is possible in delaware, new jersey the clouds will be thinning out. sunshine this afternoon an a chance of a shower or thunderstorm at the shore. certainly not an all-day rainfall. and the storm threat will decrease as we go through the evening hours. and then tomorrow, partly sunny skies. the humidity coming down, too. that's the other thing that will be going missing as well as showers over the next few days. we get a nice dry stretch for tomorrow, thursday and friday. by saturday, the humidity starts creeping back into the area and so does the chance of showers and thunderstorms. we're out of it for sunday. great day, 72 in the morning, 88 in the afternoon. typical august heat for monday, tuesday, wednesday. by thursday, we're back up to 90 degrees. >> çthanks, bill. just about ten minutes before 6:00. jessica boyington is standing by with a check of the schuylkill expressway. any delays?
yes, there is a delay. >> flashing red lights. >> not a huge delay because of it yet but there potentially can be. a slow go by the scene. we're watching the schuylkill expressway, katy and tracy. this is around vare avenue, headed eastbound. we have that lane restriction here. you can see it's blocking one of the right-hand lanes. one of two lanes getting by. it's not doing much in terms of backup right now. we'll keep an eye on it. it's a disabled truck over here. we have a police officer and a penndot worker as well. it's just a disabled truck here. no big accident scene under way that will need to get cleaned up later. burlington township, still watching that as well. there's the downed pole closing that area around pemberton road. that's been there since early this morning. in runnemede, around creek road. the northbound traffic is right here. that's what's headed into philadelphia. no big problems or delays there yet. and heading over into the ben or

good morning, everyone. jessica boyington watching first alert traffic and a few problems on the roads right now. how quickly things can change. we're starting on 95 around cottman avenue on the southbound side. into center city we have a multivehicle accident there. you can see police activity just arriving to the scene. we had the left lane blocked there. some delays and also a traffic stop to watch on the 42 freeway over in runnemede around creek road. this one is over into the shoulder, no big delays yet. updates on both of these scenes when i come back in the 6:00 hour. >> jessica, thanks. the owners of a gay nightclub in orlando will re-open it as a memorial to the
49 people who died there. the one pulse foundation revealed the plans on social media on sunday. they have not said when the memorial site will open. the gunman, omar mateen opened fire at the pulse nightclub on june 12th. he was killed in a shootout with police. north wildwood city council will decide if voters will get a chance to say if they want the city's name changed. if the resolution is approved, the cape may county clerk will place a nonbinding question on the november ballot. last month, a group of residents presented a petition to the mayor and city council asking that the name north wildwood be changed back to its original name, angle sea. olympic officials are ins t insisting that rio de janeiro's waterways will be safe for athletes and visitors. >> a study did find those
waterways are as filthy as ever. the associated press commissioned a 16-month study of the aquatic venues such as scenic guanabaja bay. the study found some 1,400 athletes are at risk of getting ill. the president of the international olympic committee appeared to disagree. >> you'll have four tests a day. measures are in place to remove the debris. it's all coming together. >> athletes say they're trying to protect themselves as best they can. some said the beaches are no dirtier than many others they visited. with the world converging on rio, an increased police presence is in place around the olympic venue. brazil is working with other countries, including the u.s. and france to ensure safety and deal with the threat posed by global terrorism. nbc 10's jacqueline london has
