>> much more on the opening ceremony and the u.s. olympic team just ahead. first, let's get to meteorologist bill henley. he has your neighborhood forecast for today and the weekend. bill? >> we're counting down to sunrise, just three minutes away. we will see bright sunshine. look how nice and clear it is. lehigh valley, new jersey, the suburbs, 60 degrees and still falling. usually the coolest time of day is just after sunrise. a quick warmup with sunshine, 81 degrees at noontime today. and into the 80s for most of the area. philadelphia 70 degrees, 87 this afternoon. humidity level similar to what we saw yesterday for new jersey, the lehigh valley, and delaware. sunshine will be nice and bright in the lehigh valley and a great shore day with afternoon temperatures into the 70s today. there are changes, though, for the weekend. that includes a chance of some showers and thunderstorms. take a look ahead toward the weekend when i'm back in a few minutes. first, jessica boyington watching your traffic onç a friday morning. >> that's right. we're watching the 42 freeway around the atlantic city expressway, bill. no big problems or delays here.
this traffic over here goes to the ac expressway, right here to the black horse pike and right here northbound towards the philadelphia area. you can see no problems in either direction heading down the shore, getting an early start on your summer weekend. maybe you'll be just fine right now. other than that, mass transit, we're seeing small delays. thorndale 1512 running ten minutes late. otherwise, no problems or big delays for mass transit as a whole. i'll be back in about ten minutes with more updates for you, though, on your morning drive. tracy? 6:02. tonight, the eyes of the world will be on rio as the 2016 summer games officially gets started with the opening ceremony. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in our digital operations center with a preview. matt? >> tracy, several billion people are estimated to be watching this from around the world later tonight. a lot of eyes will be on rio. crews have been making last-minute touchups and
cleanups. the opening ceremony is in americania, the soccer stadium revamped for the world cup two years ago. it proms to be different from anything we've seen before. we got to see a small glimpse of the rehearsals last night but brazil may be keeping much of the ceremony a secret. what we do know, michael phelps will join in the ceremony, carrying the flag for team usa. >> this has to be one of the coolest things i've ever done. >> athletes are in brazil to compete in several sports there. 31 sports. if you don't have to go to rio to enjoy the olympics, there are watch parties for the opening ceremony tonight. a couple ones in ourç area, bethlehem, also one in northern liberty. also watching the games, one of the more notable olympic
athletes, kerri strug. we'll hear from her coming up at 6:30. from the digital operations center, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. nbc 10's jacqueline london is your guide to the rio games and all our local athletes. be sure to watch her reports later today and tonight on nbc 10 news. new from overnight, a man is in critical condition after someone shot him three times in southwest philadelphia. authorities tell us the man was walking out of a store on south 69th street when he was shot. police have made no arrests and they're still trying to determine a motive for the shooting. 6:04. 70 degrees outside. the upper floors of philadelphia's criminal justice center will be closed today after a runaway elevator injured two employees. one victim, a sheriff's deputy, sergeant paul owens, is in critical but stable condition after having successful surgery for broken bones in his back. now here's the other victim. this is beverly smith, a clerk at cjc. smith was hit by flying debris. she was treated at the hospital and released.
they heard what sounded like an explosion on the roof of their elevator car yesterday morning. officials say sergeant owens was found trapped after his elevator shot up through a ceiling near the 13th floor. authorities are investigating. monsignor william lynn will be retried on the first of may next year. the judgement case set the trial date yesterday. you're looking at video of lynn arriving to court in philadelphia yesterday. lynn is the first roman catholic priest in the u.s. put on trial for helping shield child molesters in the church. the state supreme court overturned i overturned his conviction. he was release from jail after serving three years of a three to six-year sentence. a detective on tuesday reported someone doused his car with gas and set it on fire. police determined reddick had convinced that person to start the fire. reddick is on administrative leave and free on bail. new details about a fight in
wawa caught on camera. philadelphia police say they arrested two people in connection with this chaos inside of a wawa in torresdale avenue sunday. police say a group was arguing with customers and employees, throwing food at them, chasing them and then kicking and hitting them. detectives say the same group vandalized the same wawa the day before. $23 million worth of cocaine is now off the streets of philadelphia thanks to a series of drug arrests. yesterday, pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane announced the arrest of these six suspects. they said they were part of a drug ring that smuggled cocaine from caribbean countries into the u.s. authorities say they found hundreds of pounds of the drug in a warehouse and two cars in philadelphia. they're calling it one of the largest drug seizures in years. we're hearing from the owner of the trump taj mahal in atlantic city. yesterday carl icahn wrote a
letter to taj mahal's workers. he accused their union of inciting them to destroy their own jobs by staging a strike. icahn said he lost more than $100 million on the taj since last year and blamed the union for not accepting health care and retirement benefits at a lower level than other casinos. the union says icahn helped bleed the casino dry. >> the taj mahal is the only casino in atlantic city that did not sign a contract. >> yesterday, several union workers were still picketing outside of the property. city officials stopped by to offer a hand to soon-to-be unemployed workers to get them back on their feet. water quality tests are being done atç philadelphia public schools, all because of lead contamination concerns around the country. the district is retesting the drinking water at more than three dozen schools within the city. the project is expected to take about four months.
maybe you've notice it, you may have seen the spots of green on the schuylkill river lately. nbc 10 found out what it was. the philadelphia water department told us its duckweed. the floating plan grows in slow-flowing areas of the river and the recent rain caused it to break up and float towards the dam. the water department says it's not harmful. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> sunshine is just about to come up. in fact, it is coming up. wilmington, delaware, that's a live view from frawley stadium which will see a sunny, warm day today, similar to yesterday. there's the sun. you can see it just above the horizon. the view from center city. nothing in the sky this morning. skies are clear. the temperatures cool down nicely overnight. 59 degrees in the suburbs. look at the lehigh valley. 64, south jersey 60 degrees while delaware is 66. at the shore, 62 degrees and philadelphia international is 70 but there are low 60s to be found, too, andorra is 62
degrees in somerton, 61 degrees to start with. sunshine will be, like yesterday, a quick warmup into the 70s and then into the 80s. what you won't see today are showers or thunderstorms. tomorrow that's a different story. tomorrow looks like wet weather will be rolling through the area. for today, though, we have another winner. sunshine, 80s for philadelphia. 84 degrees in chestnut hill with plenty of sunshine. doylestown will warm to 82. warmer for lansdale. the suburbs, sunny skies with a few high clouds later in the day and easton into the 80s this afternoon with sunshine nice and bright this morning. scattered clouds this afternoon. high of 83 degrees for kutztown and new jersey, nothing*uá sunshine for trenton, look at evesham township, up to 86 degrees. it's 70s for ocean city and atlantic city. warmer in cape may. high of 82 degrees this afternoon. into the 80s with sunshine for smyrna and wilmington. our rain chances go up starting tomorrow. quiet today.

>> more specific we can get about it, the more likely people are to take action. >> reporter: nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley joins us right now. >> we'll be tracking showers and thunderstorms for tomorrow. for today, sunshine. a clear view from the comcast center, a view from center city. temperatures are cooling down nicely in the lehigh valley. easton seeing sunshine right now and low 60s. 64 degrees in the lehigh valley. 60 degrees in the suburbs. in facçt, most of the areas in the 60s. look at new jersey and the jersey shore very low 60s while it's at 70 degrees at philadelphia international. there are 50s, too. look at that. 58 degrees right now in pemberton. cinnaminson is down to 63 degrees. a pleasant start this morning. the humidity will be dropping during the day. you won't see showers or thunderstorms today. here's the system that will change that for tomorrow. extending from canada through michigan and into the midwest. watching storms in northern
missouri. that's the same system that will arrive during the day tomorrow. today you might see a few clouds, high clouds, that's 2:00 this afternoon. allentown, the lehigh valley, into northern delaware. a few high clouds. mainly it's going to be sunshine, 4:00 this afternoon. look at the sunshine for delaware and south jersey. we'll be seeing philadelphia, lots of sunshine, even into the suburbs afternoon. the clouds will increase overnight tonight. should stay dry overnight tonight. but we'll watch the showers develop in central pennsylvania, first thing tomorrow morning. that's 7:00 in the morning. you can see the showerspunxsuta. they are on the move. 2:00 in the afternoon, heavy downpours in the suburbs. that line of showers will be moving into delaware and south jersey and then headed for the shore. that's 5:00 tomorrow afternoon. look at the potential for heavy downpours and with these storms could come some strong wind gusts as well. but that's tomorrow.
for today, 10 day on 10 has us into the sunshine. 87 degrees for this afternoon. the humidity won't be that bad. it will be in check, what we saw yesterday. the steaminess increases tomorrow ahead of those storms. 92 degrees. that's after a morning low of 74 degrees. not as cool overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. but it gets much nicer for the second half of the weekend. sunshine, we'll be back for the entire region. high of 88 degrees for çsunday. the humidity dropping on sunday and you'll feel the difference for monday and tuesday. a couple of beautiful days before summer heat increases. we're back into the 90s wednesday, thursday and friday with showers and thunderstorms possible on friday. high of 93 degrees. still hot but we'll be clearing out for next weekend. saturday and sunday, into the 90s. we've got storms for tomorrow and then sunshine on sunday. and a nice weekend next weekend with temperatures typical for august. ladies? >> all right, thank you. time now 6:20 on your friday

welcome back. amtrak says it has reduced delays on two local lines by nearly 25% after adding dozens of new trains. amtrak started adding the electric locomotives in the summer of 2013 to replace an aging fleet. the new engines are use on amtrak's northeast corridor line between washington and boston. its keystone service between philadelphia and harrisburg. amtrak officials say the engines have new technology that tell engineers about potential

window. this is nbc 10 news. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm pamela osborne. >> i'm tracy davidson. 6:30. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert neighborhood forecast. morning, bill. >> morning, tracy. the sun is up. we'll sea a lot of it today. won't see rainfall today, just sunshine and climbing temperatures, holding at 70 degrees right now in philadelphia. that's a live view from center city with sunshine. the temperatures will warm into the low 70s at 8:00, then near 80 degrees. by 11:00 this morning. a similar warmup for the suburbs and lehigh valley. see some scattered high clouds there. you'll see more of those this afternoon. but plenty of sunshine to start with, 80 degrees at lunch time today. warming into the middle to upper 80s this afternoon. 87 degrees, just a little bit warmer than yesterday. but the humidity is going to stay on the low side like it was yesterday. the suburbs, 86 degrees this afternoon. for new jersey, also into the 80s while at the shore, it will be upper 70s this afternoon and plenty of sunshine for the
lehigh valley and delaware. i'll go through the forecast hour by hour when i'm back in just a few minutes. let's get an update on traffic. jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. >> we're startingç off on rout 70 in cherry hill, new jersey, watching sun glare here. not watching a lot of cars on the roads, not a lot of volume or anything. you can see one or two cars on the roads. we're have a quiet friday so far for a friday in the summer, which is typical about this time. watch for the ramp closed on 95, 95 northbound around girard avenue, allegheny and aramingo avenue. we're not seeing increase at all heading into center city. maybe two minutes or so, southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway, only a 15-minute trip. rio takes center stages athe 2016 summer games officially get under way with the opening ceremony. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in the digital operations center this morning. matt, there's essentially some
moments that we remember. >> kerri strug performing the vault with an injured ankle. remember this video? we spoke with kerri strug while she was talking to workers in delaware county and a lot has changed in 20 years. kerri now has two kids and will be watching with her son who is 4 years old. the first olympic games he will see. long since retired from gymnast inges, she now works with the justice department focusing on kids. she often reflects on that moment 20 years ago when she hurt her ankle on one vault and went back for a second attempt, getting the gold for the women's team. this is the message she continues to share today. >> you fall down, you get back up. and for youngsters, that's of utmost importance, not just literally but figuratively. we're all going to run into barriers and have problems in our life but it's those who persevere and who don't give up and break down those barriers, they're the ones that succeed

his condition and information about the shooting. federal prosecutors charge nearly four dozen suspects for alleged organized crime including the philadelphia's reputed mafia boss. the charges are part of a massive investigation involving new york city police and the fbi. alleged members of numerous crime families were among those arrested. skinny joey merlino is among those charged. he's accuse d of various items. the nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows clinton at 47% and trump at 38%. a poll of likely pennsylvania voters by franklin and marshall
showed an ç11-point lead for clinton in pa. >> i feel like millions of americans right now aren't happy with the choices at the top of the ticket. but you know, there's always the option to write someone in. >> as a party leader i don't want to do anything that would help him in any way. i don't even want to be associated with him. >> william was one of the three people to quit the berks county republican committee this week. the republican party says they'll work to elect trump if hillary clinton becomes president, former philadelphia mayor michael nutter could end up in her cabinet. politico reported that nutter is under consideration for both transportation secretary and secretary of housing and urban development. police and park officials in north jersey are warning runners, hikers and bikers to keep alert after finding booby traps along a popular trail. police say the discovery of the
traps at a park in passaic county dates back to june. they include broken bottles, placed near rocks, rope tied around logs, barbed wire strung across pathways. there are even wooden planks with screws and nails sticking out of them placed just under the road surface. so far, no injuries have been reported. police in philadelphia want to know who shot an arrow who hit a house just feet away from where a toddler sleeps. the arrow was lodged into the glass of this second floor window. the son of the homeowner posted these images. the incident happened on wednesday. they're not sure what time. don't go swimming in dumpsters. it's a warning that doesn't really seem necessary but we're putting it out there. >> it sounds weird but it's because of this picture, this is what philadelphia is telling residents. the city issued an advisory after this photo sure fashioned.
the )ját news site billy penn first reported this dumpster pool party. the organizers says they power washed the dumpster, lined it with tarps and filled it with water from the fire hydrant. that water is needed to fight fires. using it to fill a dumpster, they say, could cause water main breaks. hurricane earl is down it a tropical storm moving across southern mexico. before it downgraded yesterday, the storm dumped up to 18 inches of rain on parts of belize and guatema guatemala. winds of 80 miles per hour caused damage in villages and towns. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. sun-filled skies. we're starting off with bright sunshine and a really pleasant morning. 60s and 70s. 70 degrees right now in philadelphia. 70 at philadelphia international. the light breeze at 3 miles an hour. we'll see sunshine. it's back into the 80s this afternoon. a southerly wind at 8 miles an
hour, not offerly strong but just enough to warm temperatures this afternoon. the real warmup comes tomorrow. for the suburbs, sunshine and 64 degrees now. into the middle 70s at 10:00. completely dry through the day today as we warm into the 80s. the lehigh valley, you can see clouds moving through. no showers with those clouds. 63 degrees to start with. we'll see sunshine and some clouds in fact, more clouds this afternoon with temperatures in the 80s. those clouds coming in advance of a system that will be here tomorrow with a chance that you'll need your umbrella. that's the lehigh valley. what about south jersey? we'll see plenty of sunshine there. 60 degrees right now. 76 at 10:00 and into the 80s this afternoon. those light southerly winds just below 10 miles an hour. at the shore, stronger. the wind at 2:00 this afternoon. at 13 miles an hour and a southerly wind at 14 miles an hour, just enoug to keep the temperatures in the upper 70s.

a beautiful day ahead. this is a live view from the comcast center in center city. look at that. completely clear this morning. humidity, a little bit elevated but that will be falling as the day goes on, as the temperatures climb. we're seeing a nice cool start. st. david's, 64 right now. no sign of 70s just yet. we'll quickly warm through the 70s. it's into the 80s this afternoon with plenty of sunshine, too. chestnut hill, a high of 84 degrees. somerton, center city, into the mid to upper 80s today. sunshine to start with in the lehigh valley and the suburbs. there will be scattered clouds later in afternoon. before they move in, the temperatures move up. west chester, 82 degrees this afternoon for allentown. 84 the high temperature. completely dry for kutztown and easton during the day today. tomorrow, we will see the clouds building with a chance of showers. in new jersey and at the shore, nothing but sunshine. atlantic city, 79 degrees. warmer for atlantic city and
cape may. a southerly breeze today. you'll feel the warmup for delaware, too. rehoboth beach, sunny skies. 81 this afternoon. look at wilmington, 86 degrees. you don't need your umbrella. sunglasses will take care of today and sun block, too. for tomorrow, though, we'll be watching the satellite and radar. that's when we're likely to see this coming our way. that line, doesn't look like much. look at the storms, no -- it won't be an all-day rainfall. for today, scattered clouds, 2:30 this afternoon. those clouds in the lehigh valley and some of the suburbs as well, even into delaware. plenty of sunshine p 4:00 this afternoon. this is when the temperatures will be peaking into the evening hours. a few scattered clouds. overnight tonight, the humidity starts to move in. you'll feel the difference and tomorrow morning won't be as cool. clouds to start with.
1:30 in the morning. by daylight, we'll see scattered showers in central pennsylvania and western pennsylvania. they'll quickly move into the philadelphia suburbs, that's at 2:00 in the afternoon. then they're on their way to delaware and south jersey and with this line of showers and thunderstorms, we could see heavy downpours in the area and strong gusty winds. but they'll keep on going, move through the area, clearing skies for sunday. so the chance of showers will be a one-day threat. the t10 day on 10, steamy weather, 92 degrees. need rainfall and we will see some downpours tomorrow with the storms that roll through during the day. they keep on going, clearing out for saturday night and sunday will be sunny, too, not as warm in the morning. that's an indication of less humid conditions, high of 88 degrees on sunday. 80s for monday and tuesday. but here comes some steamier weather for wednesday, thursday and from i. chance of storms on friday.

minutes or so with one last check on your morning. just hours away from the opening ceremony, the summer games in rio. people around the world will be watching as the olympics officially get under way. >> nbc's jay gray joins us live from rio. what are you hearing about the opening ceremony? we're so excited, we can't wait. >> yes. i think it will be very exciting. it will be something the brazilian officials say that showcases the story of their country. this is a story of what the athletes from team usa will be wearing. this is the official opening ceremony jacket. you can see the crest here. the usa on the back. they will be wearing these as they parade into the olympic stadium this evening. look for music, look for dancing, look for fireworks and perhaps and nothing is official but perhaps it will be the great soccer star pele that lights the cauldron as the olympic torch makes its way into the stadium. it will be very secure,
according to officials. we've seen it throughout our stay here, officers, also soldiers patrolling not only the venues and the olympic areas but the city and the beach. there's a strong force, extra 85,000 army personnel have been brought in to be a part of the security at these olympics. when you talk to the athletes, talk to the folks visiting here and including those of us in the media, everything has, to this point, felt very safe. there's a big show of force here. >> you were talking about who to watch tonight, what to watch for. michael phelps, a lot of people will watch him carry the (p' flag at the ceremony. what can we expect from the most decorated olympian at the summer games? >> it's hard to believe that a guy who is in his fifth olympics has never been a part of the opening ceremony. he said it is an honor, will be emotional, it's a dream come true to carry the flag.

well, the day is here. the 2016 olympic games officially begin in rio. >> that's right, nbc 10's matt delucia is here with a few olympic sized facts in these last few hours before the opening ceremony, matt. >> many wondering if rio is ready. we'll be watching tonight and these are the medals that the athletes will be fighting for. a couple of fun facts to think about here. a good trivia for watch parties you might be going to later on this evening. there are more than 10,000 athletes competing in more than 40 sports. nbc is lone is producing more than 6,000 hours of average, 6,755 hours there on 11 different networks. and the opening ceremony that begins tonight and you can watch it right here on nbc 10 at 7:30.
our jacqueline london is also there covering our local athletes. we are your home for the 2016 olympic games. good morning, everyone. jessica boyington watching the roads right now. we're watching a disabled vehicle right now out in horsham. horsham road and evergreen road. there may be lane restrictions there in place because of that. also watching mass çtransit, jt an update from the broad street line due to manpower issues. we're up to 20-minute delays. no problems for the rest of mass transit, at least for the most part. watching some disabled vehicles here. this is 295 around the black horse pike. you can see that over into the right-hand shoulder of the southbound side. more traffic heading that direction. that could be headed toward philadelphia or maybe to different parts of south jersey. southbound from 38 to the black horse pike at this point, still a 12-minute trip with no real big problems or delays. the rest of the majors looking
just fine. no delays on 95, a big surprise for this time of morning. eastbound on the schuylkill, maybe five minutes to your morning commute from the blue route to the vine street expressway. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> one minute before 7:00. perfect view of our area and the reason why we do neighborhood weather, different neighborhoods, different weather. the suburbs, 61 degrees, sunshine, 70 degrees in philadelphia with bright sunshine and the temperatures will be climbing into the lower 70s to start with. near 80 degrees at 11:00. meantime, clouds moving through the lehigh valley. that's a mostly cloudy view now from easton. those clouds have darkened up. sunshine will return, 80 degrees by lunch time. the entire area will see temperatures in the 80s this afternoon. the good news is, it's not going to be steamy today. kind of like yesterday where the humidity is at reasonable levels. well, that changes this weekend for saturday. that could lead to afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
