"first alert" is in effect box of the potentially dangerous heat. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with the neighborhood forecast. 77 degrees this time yesterday, already in the 80s now. >> that's why we've issued a "first alert" for philadelphia, suburbs, new jersey and delaware. right on through sunday, that when you'll experience very hot and humid conditions. feels like temperature when you combine the heat and humidity, 100 degrees possible up to 110, poor air quality. and we're seeing warmer temperatures, 83 degrees in philadelphia. 79 in the suburbs. there are a few scattered clouds around.
we're watching for afternoon storms. steam? and 87 degrees at lunchtime for delaware, a few scattered clouds there. 78 degrees, into the 80s by 8:00. middle 80s and still climbing at 11:00. like yesterday, we'll see the southwesterly wind that will deliver more heat and humidity. the numbers starting near 80 degrees into the 90s for philadelphia and the suburbs. suburbs and lehigh valley that's your best chance of showers and thunderstorms. new jersey at the shore, that's where you'll find temperatures shy of the 80 degrees mark. it's going to feel like more than 90 degrees this afternoon. your hour-by-hour forecast when i come back. first, jessica boyington has an update from the "first alert" traffic center. >> we're starting off at route 73 at the tacony-palmyra bridge. no problems or scheduled opening. back here, no problems here or delays, of course. we're alsoch whatting the rest of the area bridges, walt whi
whitman and ben franklin moving along fine. 95, north and south, no problems. we have that breaking news out of maryland we told you about that as many as seven people are still missing an an explosion and fire after midnight. they're searching for the people missing. 30 other people are hurt, including three firefighters. people were throwing children to get them out of the burning building. 90 people are out of their homes. a philadelphia police officer on patrol jumped into action after hearing gunshots. investigators say he chased down the second shooter and made the arrest. nbc10's matt delucia is live at
police headquarters. >> reporter: well, tracy, it's another case of an officer being in the right place at the right time. the officer was on patrol. heard gunshots and rushed over to see what happened. this is at the corner of germantown avenue and cambria street. a man was on the ground shot once in the chest and in the arm. an officer saw a man with a gun in his hand running down cambria street. one of those officers started a foot chase eventually catching up and arresting him. >> officers were in the right place at the right time. and around 10:00 at night, in the middle of august, when it's hot out, oftentimes, the officers are busy handling radio assignments which is a busy time of the year. busiest time of the year. things fell into place for the 26th district police with this shooting. and they did a great job. >> reporter: and police tell us it is rare for them to make an arrest so quickly in the case of
a murder. but they were abe le to do that. and the 23-year-old suspect, he has been questioned by homicide detectives overnight. at this point, police haven't said what the motive for this shooting is. live at police headquarters, matt delucia, "nbc10 news." new from overnight, a teenager is in the hospital in stable condition after a shooting at the wissinoming section. so far, no arrests. a former aide and one time boyfriend of pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane to pace more cross-examination as her trial continues in montgomery county. yesterday the former deputy testified that he believes she tried to frame him for a leak of secret grand sure materials. prosecutors say the attorney general leaked that to embarrass him which he believes would make
her look bad. a 6-year-old girl is still recovering after being hit by a stray bullet as she was playing outside on tuesday. take a look at the top of your screen. this is what investigators are looking out for. two shooters are exchanging gunfire. you see people running. we spoke with another young girl playing outside when shots were fired and a father who ran to shield his son. >> i just came out and i ran in the house. >> were you afraid? >> yes, she was running up the steps, as quick as i got to my son and turned around, she was down. >> also caught in surveillance, the windshield of this minivan being shot out. 20 shots have been fired in all. no one has been arrested. the 6-year-old girl is expected to be okay. meanwhile members of the delaware church said even though their black lives matter banners have been vandalized three times in the last week they're not backing down. >> people who worship at the
church in wilmington, they stand against race imand hate. church members say they will continue to replace the banners. and for each new banner they will make a donation to the cause black lives matters. delaware state police are still trying to track down the vandals. well, the birds will take the field at the linc tonight. that's when we'll see the overall number one draft pick carson wentz in action. the rookie quarterback will start the second half. we asked wentz if he's nervous about tonight's game. hear his answer coming up in about a half hour. nbc10 is your official eagles station. the birds take on the buccaneers at 7:00. coverage started at csn. and code zi tv.

we're watching a line of showers right through pennsylvania into new jersey. looking at very light scattered showers. you see a little brief showers moving through eastern berks county right now. very light. much of that not even reaching the ground. there is a chance we'll see storms mainly this afternoon. the hour-by-hour forecast shows at 4:00, looking at the activity north of philadelphia. that's where you're most likely to see it in lakewood new jersey and into the allentown area. berks, chester, bucks and montgomery county. most of the day, there's going to be steamy conditions and leaning into the 90s. philadelphia, 82 degrees at 9:00. by 1:00, 90 degrees. there's a chance of a late day storm in philadelphia. that chance for the suburbs after temperatures reach into the upper 80s at 1:00, that will likely make it to the low 90s for the suburbs and into the lehigh valley before any storms take place. less likely to see showers and
thunderstorms. 90 degrees at 1:00. and near 90 degrees at 5:00. the temperature will be near 90 degrees, it is going to feel about aten degrees higher this afternoon thanks to the additional humidity that we're experiencing. new jersey, an isolated storm possible in the day. most of the day, it's going to be dry and steamy. 88 degrees at 1:00. and the shore, well into the 80s this afternoon, will feel like it in the 90s. ten-day outlook to show you when the heat will break when i come back in a few minutes. at 10 after 6:00, we continue to follow breaking news in maryland. an explosion rocked a silver spring apartment building. as many as seven people are missing. right now, we're getting an update from fire officials. let's listen.

see the crowd didn't seem fazed when he linked president obama and hillary clinton to isis. it's not the first time he's tied democrats to radical islamists. >> isis is honoring president obama. he's the founder. he founded isis. and i would say the co-founder would be crooked hillary clinton. >> if you are running to be president, or you are president of the united states, words can have tremendous consequences. yesterday, we witnessed the latest in a long line of casual comments from donald trump that crossed the line. >> pa is a key battleground state. the latest nbc/"wall street journal" marist poll show voters heavily favor clinton but the
two are virtually neck and neck when it comes to the lehigh valley. i'm live in the digital operations center, katy zachry, "nbc10 news." >> thank you, katy. 6:18, let's get to the boulevard of those to get to work. >> "first alert" traffic reporter jessica boyington. what are you seeing? >> we're still watching the drive times. all of the majors look good thus far. and we're looking at the wissahickon avenue, there. north and south looking great. towards the schuylkill looking just fine. also checking with mass transit. two trains actually running ten minutes behind. 5803, and 502 for the doylestown line running ten minutes late. 422 looks great as well. they have an eastbound drive time from 29, approaching the schuylkill expressway maybe a minute increase there. eight minutes there. still having average speeds well into the 60s. this is new jersey, route 73
right around through the 38. roads are dry, no backups or delays. no lane restrictions or poor drive time. everything looking great so far. we'll have more updates when i come back in ten minutes. for now, let's get a check on the forecast. >> announcer: now your nbc10 "first alert" weather. >> you see the clouds out there right now. and that's going to lead to a faster warmup than we saw yesterday. it's already warmer this morning. we're starting off warm and muggy. it's in the 80s but it feels like middle to upper 80s right now with the elevated humidity. very hot and humid. even steamier than yesterday. temperatures in the 90s will feel closer to 100 degrees. a steamy evening as well as scattered clouds. we'll be watching for scattered thunderstorms for parts of the area. 70s right now. just barely below the 80 degrees mark for south jersey. 77 degrees at the shore. 70s for delaware, the suburbs
and the lehigh valley. philadelphia is holding on to 80 degrees. we'll watch the numbers climb into the 90s this afternoon. right now, cochranville at 77 degrees. no cool spots phoenixville is 78. and new hope is upper 70s to start. should be about ten degrees cooler at this time of year. the heat index projection shows it's going to be soaring over the next few days. that's why we've issued a "first alert" for dangerous heat for philadelphia, suburbs, new jersey and delaware. today, to sunday, the time period that you can expect hot and humid conditions and feels like conditions from 100 to 110, as well as poor air quality for today. right on through the weekend. it's after the weekend, we'll finally see a break from the heat and humidity. that's when we'll get a better chance of showers and thunderstorms. if you're watching a few sprinkles mainly in parts of our area, the showers that are streaming through pennsylvania
are going to miss most of the area this morning. but there's a possibility for this afternoon. 95 degrees in philadelphia today. look at the heat building for friday and saturday. it will feel more like 100 degrees even on sunday. but by monday. the heat wave comes to an end. showers and thunderstorms likely. and the threat of showers will be with us for much of next week. but so will temperatures in the 80s. thursday, 83 degrees will be the coolest of the next ten. by friday afternoon, 88 degrees. and then partly sunny skies for saturday with a high of 87. tracy. >> thanks, bill. 6:21. a former chris christie aide is weighing in on the bridgegate scandal. we'll explain why that aide does not believe christie and we'll hear how a text message is at the center of the claim. plus getting his shot. there he is preparing for his olympic debut. we'll hear about his dream from darby to rio. ♪

and forced a dozen pour from their homes. good morning, it's 6:30. i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson and it's steamy outside. let's get to meteorologist bill henley he has your "first alert" neighborhood forecast. getting you prepared, again, it is warmer and more humid than we've seen in the last couple days. and it will continue to get hotter today. bill. >> yeah, you can feel it. as soon as you walk out the door, the temperatures didn't cool down muchover night. we're in the low 70s and 80s. we're running into dangerous heat this afternoon. the heat and humidity will feel like 100 degrees at times during the day. worst of it for philadelphia, the suburbs, new jersey and delaware. that's a "first alert" for today through sunday. it's the temperatures climbing into the weekend, very hot and humid conditions. the feels like temperatures, the temperatures plus the humidity combined, will feel like 100 to
110 degrees this afternoon. poor air quality can be expected during this period as well. 80 in philadelphia. we see clouds scattered around. those clouds will break for sunshine to warm us into the middle 80s. no problem reaching the 90s this afternoon. levi valley, some scattered clouds there. 47 degrees. that's one of the cooler spots this morning. 82 degrees by 8:00. by lunchtime, 87 degrees and into the 90s this afternoon. during the afternoon, the suburbs and the lehigh valley could see isolated showers and thunderstorms. even a possibility for philadelphia later today. but the biggest problem is the heat. stay hydrated. it is going to be a hot and humid day and extended period of heat and humidity. we'll show you how quickly the temperatures can climb. when i come back, the hour-by-hour forecast. first an update by jessica boyington. >> a little bit of sunglare with
cameras around girard avenue. you can seat northbound traffic will be approaching sunglare. no problems with delays. we're starting with just a tad of slowdowns. 16 minutes on vine street expressway. it's dropping to the 60s. usually this morning, we're starting to see slight delays but lighter this morning and we have been all week. we're watching construction at lower merion part of remington road. and checking in with kelly drive. now, this construction was supposed to clear at the 6:30 mark which we're hitting right now. this is kelly drive eastbound between hunting park avenue. we have new information on that breaking news we've been covering throughout the morning in maryland. the fire chief just updated crews on the scene of an explosion. he said they're still searching for as many as seven people missing at this hour. crews are searching with canine
unions. police said one of the dog has a hit. we don't know what that means someone dead or alive. >> we are still working on locating those five to seven victims, correct. >> reporter: and have some made their way out? >> we have downsized it. again, we had three apparatus of a alarms. 20 pieces of ems units here. so we downsized that. >> and 30 other people are hurt. including three firefighters. the chief also said some of the other buildings in the apartment complex have been checked out those are sound. so people are allowed back inside. it's 6:33, the eagles kick off their preseason against the buccaneers. and fans will get their first look at rookie carson wentz. pamela osborne is live. pam, what can we expect at the
linc tonight? >> reporter: tracy, we can expect a lot-the guys have been practicing for a while now. but tonight, we'll get the first real sense of what they're bringing to the field this season. at 7:00, the eagles will take on the buccaneers, and as you mentioned a lot of eyes are on carson wentz, the rookie quarterback, expected to take the snap for the second half of the game. never mind the pressure he tells us he is excited and ready to go. >> it's been a long time coming. we've been doing it for quite sometime now. i'm excited playing in the linc. i finally get my opportunity. >> reporter: and one more thing i'd like to mention to you before we let you go. we've been talking about the excessive heat all day long. the linc is actually taking that into account for fans coming to the game tonight. they're a allowing each man to brink one water bottle. it has to be filled. 16 ounces or smaller. just a little something to keep
everybody a little cooler during the preseason game. reporting outside of the linc, i'm pamela osborne, nbc10 news. >> you can see it on tv. we have you covered. you can see the action on csn and cozi at. and you can see nbc10, the official eagles station. philadelphia police officers jumped into action to make a quick arrest after investigating a deadly shooting. they responded to a shooting just after 10:00 last night at germantown avenue and cambria street. a 46-year-old man was shot twice. he later died at the temple university hospital. officers saw a man with a gun running down cambria street. one of the officers chased him and caught up with him and arrested the 23-year-old man. homicide detectives are questioning him right now. meantime, philadelphia police are looking for the
person who shot a man in the city's hunting park section. the bullets hit the man in the back and leg just after midnight. he is listed in stable condition at the hospital. a cumberland county is out of the hospital after being shot by state police last month. police are calling the shooting a 911 mix-up. a trooper shot 76-year-old gerald sykes in his upper merion home. they traced the call later found the call fob inaccurate led them to the sykes home. the family said they shot the shooters were on the back deck. sykes thought it was an intruder, he got a shotgun. the trooper fired two shots, sykes fired one. >> he said to myself and my mom, did they catch the bad guys who shot me. he had no idea. when we told him the gentleman out on the porch was state police, he was completely shocked. >> sykes still has three bullets
lodged in his body. doctors kept them in to prevent further bleeding. the state attorney general's office has not yet determined if the use of force was necessary. a farmer aide to chris christie said the new jersey governor flat out lied for his involvement in the new jersey bridge gate scandal. it's part of a text message used against the governor used in a trial. between an appointee and staffer. that appointee and staffer helped arrange lane closures allegedly for punish lee for not endorsing the governor. >> it's ridiculous. there's nothing new. that's it. there's nothing new to talk about. >> christie also pointed out that the information about the text message actually came from a filing from a defense attorney and not by somebody under oath.
the trial is set to begin next month. >> announcer: now, your nbc10 "first alert" weather. >> 22 minutes before 7:00. the sun is out. you can see scattered clouds. no rain falling. temperatures, well, they haven't fallen much either. we're in the 70s and low 80s. there are thunderstorms that i'm tracking. these are moving towards interstate 81. hazleton, a few rain drops. east, you might see a sprinkle. there's a chance of some storms most likely this afternoon. and achieved some activity first thing. this morning. during the day, the temperatures soar. 80 degrees in philadelphia, it will be near 90 degrees at lunchtime. look at that other number. that's the feels like temperature. 98 degrees at noon time. topping 100 degrees this afternoon. the humidity stays elevated this evening. if you're going to the football game, for tailgating purposes there's a chance of isolated
thunderstorm chances. look at those feels like temperatures. 101 degrees for tailgating. and it still feels like upper 90s at kickoff. finally a little cooler, very steamy at the end of the game. for the suburbs, dry to begin with, but a chance of some scattered storms during the afternoon hours. 82 degrees at 10:00. it will feel like 97 degrees in the suburbs at lunchtime today. in lehigh valley, we're watching for scattered showers. you see the clouds are moving past easton. 77 degrees. you'll see sunshine and some clouds and that chance of storms even more likely this afternoon. scattered storms won't be all afternoon. look at the feels like temperatures with additional humidity coming from the showers. it will feel like closer to 100 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon. and new jersey, clouds to begin with, clouds thinning out, it will feel like 96 degrees at lunchtime and then into the low 90s this afternoon. for the shore, you'll see sunshine this morning and then a
chance of some scattered showers or thunder showers. 80s at the shore. it will feel like the 90s. a view from the stadium, 78 degrees. upper 80s at lunchtime then 90s this afternoon. again, feels like temperatures will top 100 degrees. and the heat and humidity will be building over the next few days. a look at the 10 day on 10 when i come back in a few minutes. just 20 minutes before 7:00 a.m. hopefully, you've got your air conditioning working in the car. >> let's check the schuylkill expressway buildup now. look at what i see behind you, jessica. >> i know, i'm blocking it a little bit. we'll start off on the schuylkill, belmont avenue, these are the eastbound lanes right here. it's a little better when you see the vine, speeds are in the 40s. 16 minutes right there. you can see the westbound side
actually right here looking slower. we'll probably see an increase. maybe about a 20-minute drive time. we're adding about a ten-minute commute. starting here on the freeway in new jersey, we're not seeing any delays on the new jersey roads into philadelphia. and mass transpretty much running on time. or close to schedule. 6:41 right now. team usa is riding a wave of gold in rio. we'll look at the medal count, coming up. plus, duel in the pool, we'll take you to rio between the heavyweight matchup between michael phelps and ryan lochte. and "nbc10 responds" to a viewer who found a rental car vandalized. and she had to pay for the damages. welcome to the wonder of the olympic games.
in today's "nbc10 responds" a viewer said her rental car was vandalized while she was on vacation and she got a bill for the damage. >> but a police officer said the car should not have been on the road in the first place. she turned to the "nbc10 responds" team to help her sort it out. >> reporter: this is bay, not the woman but the coor. >> i take it to get washed once a week. i keep up on its oil changes. >> reporter: back in march, an air bag recall forced her to put bay in. she left that car and went on
vacation. when she returned. she discovered damage to the rental. >> back windows have been smashed out. my first reaction was to call a911. >> reporter: she tells us that the cop showed up said the rental shouldn't have been on the road. >> registration had been expired the entire month i had the car. >> reporter: meantime, enterprise billed her nearly $500 for the damages. reamer decided to reach out to "nbc10 responds." from i just feeded somebody to help me. >> reporter: we reached out to enterprise. the company acknowledged they did rent her the car with expired tags and sent a statement, we apologize. therefore, we are waiving the cost of the damage. >> i'm so damage, can i hug you? >> sure. >> thank you. >> reporter: harry hairston, "nbc10 responds." >> enterprise said they should know they are responsible for damages while in their

the evening hours. right now, there's 80 in philadelphia. the rest of the area is very close to the 80 degree mark. the readings in the middle 70s, no problems reaching the 80s by lunchtime and 90s for the afternoon. 78 degrees this morning, elroy, that's 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. the heat index, well, put the temperatures and humidity together, that will feel like 98 degrees at noon time today. but it goes even higher than that this afternoon. 102 is the feels like temperature for philadelphia at 2:30. not just philadelphia, look at trenton, burlington, voorhees, burlington will feel like 104 degrees at that hour. as you go into the afternoon, feels like temperatures swedesboro at 5:00, 104 degrees. the 80s will disappear. it will go into the 90s and feel more like 100 degrees this afternoon. we'll watch the satellite and
radar. we're seeing some showers and one thunderstorm to the north. the chance of showers will be increasing this afternoon. hour-by-hour, future weather at 5:30 this afternoon, some storms northwest of allentown. but also in central new jersey. the possibility while there's less of a threat, wilmington and jersey will likely stay shower-free. 10 day on 10, the temperatures climbs. partly sunny skies. 97 degrees tomorrow afternoon. those elevated morning temperatures, an indication of very high humidity. and it gets even warmer on saturday morning. 80 in the morning. near 100 in the afternoon. feels like 107 degrees saturday afternoon. and steaminess will continue on sunday. the heat wave, should be the last day of the heat wave on sunday. breaking on monday with a chance of storms. 87 degrees the high temperatures. chance of storms and most of the

surges ahead for the win. her third gold medal in the olympic pool here in rio. and she's got another shot. she's in the pool again, today, the 800-meter qualifying heat. she owns the record in that event. she should do pretty well. >> let's talk about michael phelps and ryan lochte that will square up in the 200-meter individual tonight. they're friends and rivals. >> reporter: it is huge, it's probably the last time that these two will swim against each other in the olympics. although, who knows with wait they're swimming. look, you've got these guys who didn't like each other for years starting off. but they've really grown to appreciate one another. they both will play independently. others push them to be the best they can be. and they genuinely enjoy being on this team together. being the veterans and mentors on this team and swimming against each other so this will be a very special night.

and we continue to follow breaking news out of maryland this morning. as many as seven people are missing after an explosion and fire in silver springs. fire officials are using canine crews to search for the missing people. 30 other people were hurt, including three firefighters. fire crews have not said what caused the explosion. but the fire chief said each department has a natural gas furnace. good morning, everyone, jessica boyington watching the roads right now, we're out in belmont, new jersey, watching 295, right around the black horse area. an accident that was just reported. you can obviously see here. over into the right-hand shoulder of the northbound side. this is coming out of maybe the 42 freeway. not approaching the philadelphia area. we don't see as much volume
