breaking news. a deadly home invasion in hunting park. police say six children were inside a home when two men broke, killing a man and hurting a woman. today is the first day of school for young students in philadelphia, plus, what parents need to know about registering kids for class today. sunny, breezy and beautiful. a live look at cape may. first alert meteorologist bill henley says you're in store for some beautiful weather today. nbc 10 breaking news. news. police are telling us this is one of the worst crime scenes they've seen in a while. one man is dead, a woman in critical condition of aa home invasion. six children were at home at the time. some of the children were in the room where two people were shot. the children are okay. they are with their grandparents. we'll have more on this story coming up in just a couple of minutes. first, let's get you out your door with first alert forecast and first alert
traffic. >> a much more comfortable start to the workweek. meteorologist bill henley has your weather. bill? >> humidity will be dropping during the day. northwesterly winds at 8 miles an hour. that's bringing the temperatures down this morning. 71 degrees in philadelphia. look at the suburbs in new jersey, 68 degrees to start with. the lehigh valley, we're seeing clear skies. 70 degrees at 8:00. by 11:00, 77 degrees. those skies will brighten up and the temperatures warm into the lower 80s this afternoon. as the day progresses, the wind will pick up, those are gusty winds is afternoon. keeping our temperatures in the low 80s for delaware, the lehigh valley and new jersey, 83 degrees this afternoon in philadelphia. i'll go through these forecasts hour by hour when i come back in just a few minutes to show you how quickly these temperatures will warm up. first we're taking a look at first alert traffic with pamela osborne. >> good morning, bill.
good morning to all of you at home. things are looking good on the roadways this morning. this is route 422 right around route 29. you can see more cars on the roadway this morning, which is what we expect for this time of day. certainly no delays, no hangups for anybody traveling that way. want to give you a look at the drive times for the turnpike, 22, 21 minutes, average speeds in the 60s. so everything is looking good this morning for you. also want to give you another look at all yourç majors, 95, , 476 all clear on your monday morning. 5:32. breaking news we're following. police are telling us it's the worst scene they've seen in a long time. a deadly killing in hunting park. six children were in the home. matt delucia, tell us more. >> none of those children were
physically injured but, of course, a harrowing scene here this morning. police are trying to figure out who did this. i'll step out of the way here. police are still on the 3,700 block of north 7th street. still an active crime scene. they've been inside the house, also behind the house in a back alley. let's show you video, give you a closer look at what's going on. the shooting happened just before 1:00. police tell us two men went into this house through a first floor kitchen window, went upstairs to a bedroom, saw this man and his wife, demanded money and for some reason, both of them were shot. the 35-year-old man was pronounced dead. his wife was shot as well, a 40-year-old woman. she was able to talk with some investigators initially there but those children, all age 5z to 13 years old, some of them, of course, were in the room. witnesses to this crime, watched
their father get shot to death and investigators, they also found a shotgun and a bag in the back alley that had a skull cap and shotgun rounds as well. police are still investigating this case at this hour. >> we're holding two additional crime scenes in the rear of the property where the shooting took place. police also found several residences along the block that do have exterior surveillance ç cameras. homicide detectives are on location right now processing the crime scene. >> investigators will be looking for that video and looking at every piece of that video trying to get some leads here. they also have a nickname for one of the men that they are looking for at this hour. they won't release that information. this is the 3700 block of north 7th street. the crime scene unit still here on the scene. investigators have been coming in and out of that house where all of this happened.
police do not think this was random. it appears that the man who was killed was known to the two men who did this. the grandparents took the children away. at this point, no arrests have been made. live in hunting park, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. one person is dead, four others hurt after a house fire in germantown. neighbors rushed to help when they saw smoke. the fire was too intense for them to get inside. nbc 10's monique braxton is live at temple university hospital in north philadelphia. monique, what can you tell us about the condition of the victims? hi, vai. one of the victims is here, listed in critical condition. we still are not sure, according to the fire department, of the relationship between the survivor here and the person who passed away. but our cameras were on the scene outside 56 clappier street when flames swiftly engulfed this two-story home. initially five people were
reported trapped inside. we spoke to one neighbor who tried to rescue them before firefighters arrived. >> we heard her fall down the steps but we couldn't get in. >> reporter: five people in all were rescued from the home, two initially in critical condition. one has since passed away. the fire marshal is still working to determine the cause of the blaze. outside temple university hospital, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. ç71 degrees, 5:36. police in south jersey are looking for this suspect accused in a shooting that left a man dead and a young girl hurt. burlington county prosecutors have charged samuel james with murder. pless say he shot byron turner in the head outside a home in burlington on saturday night. a 5-year-old girl was hurt while running from the gunfire. she was not shot. well, it is a wrap in rio. >> 2016 olympics are now history, filled with record-setting performances, magical moments and a finale to
remember. at the closing ceremony last night, simone biles carrying the american flag. the athletes from around the world took pictures with biles who won five medals, four of them, of course, gold. the finale included a lively tribute to brazilian cull tear and rio's handoff to tokyo, the olympic host four years from now. rio extinguished its olympic flame. the crowd at the stadium let out a collective sigh as water poured down on the flame until it slowly flickered out and extinguished. discipline is coming for olympic swimmer ryan lochte and three of his teammates yesterday. the u.s. olympic committee the swimmers lied about being robbed at gun point at a gas station. they say it harmed brazil and took away from the olympics. matt lauer sits down with an exclusive interview with ryan lochte on "today." coming your way at 7:00 a.m.,

we're less than 45 minutes before sunrise. the temperatures at this hour are still cooling down. we could drop into the 60s in philadelphia. right now 71 degrees with a nice breeze blowing that's going to be increasing during the day. look at the winds kicking in at 10:00 this morning. a northwesterly wind, a 12 mile-an-hour wind. as we go into the afternoon, the winds will become more gusty. it will do two things. temperatures warm into the low 80s this afternoon. it will deliver comfortable air. the humidity will be dropping during the day. already starting to feel it in some of the suburbs. 63 right now. 75 degrees at lunch time. into the upper 70s this afternoon for the suburbs and the lehigh valley, you'll start with sunny skies as well. 62 degrees now. that's one of the cooler spots in the area. middle 70s at noontime. look at those northwesterly winds this afternoon. gusty winds in the lehigh valley as well. and reaching new jersey, the dry air will push any clouds out of the picture and sunshine will be

mostly in the 60s, low 60s for the lehigh valley, the suburbs, delaware, south jersey in the 60s while it's still holding at 71 degrees in philadelphia. marshallton in delaware, 63 degrees. 66 in wilmington. reedy point is 70 degrees. the cooler temperatures, even for rehoboth beach and lewes, in the upper 60s right now. winds, they'll be stronger later this morning. and this afternoon, that's when we'll see wind gusts of more than 20 miles an hour. winds steady at 14 mile-an-hour in philadelphia and at the shore. that will deliver dry air for entire area. humidity readings, elevated this morning but they will be dropping significantly later this morning and then this afternoon, humidity projection showing it feeling much more comfortable later today, 44% humidity in philadelphia. lowering visibility -- or humidity for the shore and for delaware as well. so a nice day today with no sign of any wet weather. storms we had yesterday, there

you can see quite eye few cars on the roadway this morning. the sun's also coming up in the background there. an easy drive to your work on monday morning. not too many problems to report on the roadway. we'll have a full update when i come back. six minutes before 6:00. starting today, repairs to a gas main will cut down some lanes of traffic in cherry hill. pse & g is doing theç work between 295 and glennview place. the project is scheduled to begin around 7:00 this morning and should be finished by saturday. get updates by tapping the nbc 10 app. crews in north philadelphia will be demolishing the west sedgely avenue bridge. that demolition starts at 6:00 tonight, expected to end 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. neighbors should expect minimal noise during the construction work. the bridge is being replaced. officials say the entire project should be done by the end of the year. a mother an a son in that car there left dangling from a
highway overpass. this is in florida. the rescue was caught on camera. witnesses say the woman was driving the car yesterday before she lost control and went over that concrete barrier. firefighters had to use slings that secured the car and made sure it didn't fall any further. rescuers also had to break out the back window in order to pull the mother and son out to safety. the the two were wearing seat belts and suffered minor injuries. the pornlg wmother was charged careless driving. and a call for changes in major league baseball. >> it started during saturday night's home game. a girl was hit by a line drive off the bat of freddie galvis. on sunday, a woman was hit in the face by another foul ball. galvis and phillies fans say they're worried about whether there is enough netting to protect the fans.
>> it's scary to think a baseball could hit your child in the game. >> before the season started, the phillies were one of 19 teams that extended the netting to the sides of the dugout near home plate. the team repolice eleased a sta that read in part, we are considering the possibility of further expansion next season.ç two firefighters are covering after being injured in a propane tank explosion in bucks county. investigators tell us that several propane tanks caught fire yesterday at a garage along tennis avenue in bensalem township. medics took the firefighter to the hospital with minor injuries. from the nbc 10 delaware bureau, a church is standing up to vandals. the first unitarian church of wilmington dedicated two more banners in support of the black lives matter movement. since may, vandals targeted several of the banners. the church has long been active in racial justice, women's right
and lgbt initiatives. >> we actually as i say in the black lives matter movement, we are a leaderful movement. we have many people who have been involved who understand and are standing with what we're doing and understanding what we're doing and how we're doing it. >> the church says it's working with police to install motion sensors. church leaders say every time a banner is vandalized, a donation will be made to the black lives matter cause. well, a little boy with a rare disease is getting his wish to see the pope granted. >> the 11-year-old from new york didn't want to go to disney or to meet his sports hero. landon lachance will travel to the vatican to be blessed by his personal hero. the make a wish foundation told landon yesterday during mass that he should pack his bags. >> i want to see the pope and see if this will help. being blessed by the pope. >> i think he's focusing on getting better and being normal. he's trying to be as normal as he can. he just wants to be free of the tumors. we pray for a miracle.
