day showers. more likely in the lehigh valley. right now, scattered fair weather clouds. 83 degrees at noon time today. a pretty good warmup in store for philadelphia. getting ready for sunshine. just a few thin clouds around. we'll see them at 8:00, again at 11:00. that's going to reach a warmup today and bring us more humidity. so we'll get closer to the 90 degrees mark this afternoon. we'll feel like it's in the 90s, thanks to higher humidity. a warm day in the suburbs. lehigh valley, a chance of thunderstorms. most of the area will be dry. into the 70s with nothing but sunshine at the jersey shore. i'll go through the forecast, hour by hour, to show you when the showers may pop today. i'll be back in a few minutes but first jessica boyington has the "first alert" traffic. >> thanks, bill, looks great, southbound, cameras right around baltimore pike. no backups or delays so far. there is a downed tree lower

merion, right around old lancaster road. we're seeing delays around that. 95 through delaware looking great. also 11 minutes no delays or problems north or south. 295 to 445, speeds still up into the 60s. mass transit doing just fine. we'll check in when i come back in ten. tracy. we're following breaking news from overnight in manayunk, where hi hit and run driver ran into a police sergeant and took off from the scene. this morning, investigators say they have that driver in custody. pamela osborne is live in manayunk. pam, bring us up to speed. >> reporter: -- a sergeant arrived. he was talking to an officer on the driver's side of one of those cruisers when he was hit. according to witnesses, the suspect was traveling south on main street at a very high raft

speed, he hit the cruiser and the sergeant knocking him out of his shoes and launching him 15 feet. the suspect was drive a 2008 toyota rav4. he left the scene of the accident but he didn't get far. a tow truck driver who saw what happened followed the suspect to ridge avenue and called police. we caught up to the suv and you could see damage to the passenger side of the vehicle. the driver was taken into custody. we are not showing his face because he's not yet been charged. police tell us he's 21 years old and they suspect he was drinking. the sergeant is recovering in einstein. he's in stable condition with a broken collarbone, but it he is expected to be all right. as for the suspect, police say there were several witnesses that positively identified him. he was brought down to police headquarter where is he's going to be tested for alcohol. by the way faces serious charges including aggravated assault on

a uniform police officer in connection with this hit and run. reporting live from manayunk, pamela osborne, "nbc10 news." bullets in a home in germantown with eight people including five children inside. a woman inside the home was hit and a man outside of the home was also hit. police say shooters intentionally shot inside that home but they don't know who the intended target was. police tell us the man was shot in retaliation for a fight earlier yesterday. witnesses are being talked to. a former olympic boxing hopeful is facing attempted murder charges following a week joud shoot-out in west philadelphia. police charged paul kroll after he and his girlfriend got into an argument and shots were fired. police say he and two other men volumed her to hem home and the shooting happened. three people were hurt, two in critical condition. now to south jersey where a

burglar ransacked a home. home belongs to heather lau's mom. the mother has alzheimer's. the neighbor discovered the break-in. and police are checking surveillance cameras. we have a follow-up on the theft from the wounded warrior project. philadelphia police have now found some of the organization's stolen custom-made bikes. thieves took off with $40,000 worth of the equipment from a u-haul parked at a motel two weeks ago. tuesday night, police found the bikes at a home. officers charged roy bowman. and a follow up to a story accusing a radio show of racism. hoping to move past the controversy. >> welcome back to normalcy. >> that's all host mike missanelli said to open his show on wednesday just a day after

finding out that a station created and regularly called in as a black caller named dwayne. on air and social media he preyed on stereotypes. >> i hope the people will indulge, all it does is further fan the flames here. we're about letting this thing die on the vine. >> missanelli maintains he didn't know the caller was fake. station management didn't respond to our request for a comment. on social media, in listeners defended the station saying it was all just a joke. others found that they found that as a stereotype offensive. meanwhile, josh innes lost his job amid the controversy. on tuesday, the host harshly criticize the 95's use of racial

ti stereotypes. the station has suspended innes in the past for racially charged comments. and innes has also seen his ratings drop sharply over the past months. cape may is looking to get rid of dangerous beach slopes. dangerous shore breaks happen when waves crash into the shore. in 2015, people were hurt from injuries related to deep slopes in cape may. today, representatives from the army corps of engineers and state and local engineers will answer questions at a meeting at the convention hall. >> announcer: now, your nbc10 "first alert" weather. 7 minutes after 6:00. a beautiful view from ocean city, new jersey. a really nice morning. look how clear it is. we're minutes away from sunrise. plenty of sunshine at the shore. warming into the low 80s at the shore. a nice breeze developing this

afternoon. it's already a little warmer compared to yesterday morning. 60s all around. the 50s that we're seeing, just a degree warmer in philadelphia. look at vineland and allentown, 7 degrees warmer this morning. 80s this afternoon. it's going to feel like the 90s as we see humid air pushing into the area today and again tomorrow. look at the clouds coming in from the west. those clouds already produce something showers and thunderstorm activity to southwestern pennsylvania. there's a slight chance that will hold together for parts of our area. hour by hour shows scattered clouds for lehigh valley. dry for wilmington and delaware. during the day we could see isolated showers pop up. even a chance of a thunderstorm. this computer model shows it holding together until 5:30 this evening. here it is. and that is in chester county. so a possibility of late day showers. most of the day, you'll need

this time yesterday was much different but right now, maybe getting a little bit of a late start on your morning commute. girard avenue, brake lights up ahead. a little congestion but not slowing the total drive time yet. 15 minutes southbound, and speeds also still into the 50s. there's still an accident scene on blue bell pike around stanton avenue to watch out for. and a downed tree at edgehill road and old lancaster road. and 295, a couple of cars out of the road. that's what most of the jersey majors look like right now. no big problems there. we'll have more as things progress in the morning line. this morning, crews in italy are focusing on survivors following that deadly earthquake. >> we'll have an update on the rescue efforts and searchers' race against time. plus, hack attack, we'll tell you how a "saturday night live" cast member has once again become an online target.

admissions standards. in june, volkswagen reached a $14.7 billion settlement to head off civil claims against the company. it's quarter after 6:00. today, bucks county gets rolling on the annual stuff the bus campaign. county officials, volunteers and nonprofits will be at sesame place in langhorne for a ribbon cutting. school supplies will be distributed to kids in need throughout bucks county. pennsylvania will now offer support for charter schools throughout the state. governor tom wolf set up a commission to review finances and programs at charter schools. the division will help the schools set goals for students, boost involvement by parents and increase the school's accountability for the public. there are 160 charter schools and 14 cybercharter schools in pennsylvania. today in philadelphia, independent national historical park will mark the national

and pemberton in the low 60s. a pretty nice start to the day. but there are changes ahead. much of them come thanks to the wind which will be stronger today and out of the southwest. already enjoy something breezy conditions this morning. they'll be with its right through the afternoon. and that wind will bring in a more humid air mass for the day today. that's going to make it feel like the 90s right around lunchtime in philadelphia. the actual temperatures in the upper 80s today. 92 degrees and feels like temperature at 3:00 this afternoon. we will see sunshine to start with. but notice the clouds that are moving in from the west. these clouds will bring a slight chance of a shower later in the afternoon. we'll have another chance of showers tomorrow. ahead of it, warm muggy conditions. today, 89 degrees. it will feel like the low 90s. tomorrow, it will make it into the middle 90s. it will feel like 100 degrees or just a little above thanks to the high humidity friday. the humidity will drop over the

september. and gold medal gymnast simone biles returned home to texas yesterday. the 19-year-old was greeted by fans and city leaders in houston who proclaimed the day simone biles day. also her hometown of spring, texas held a parade in her honor. u.s. goalkeeper hope solo has been suspended for six months from the u.s.woman's soccer team. the goalkeeper called the swedish women's soccer team cowards after the heavily favored u.s. team lost to sweden in the olympics. solo was previously suspended for 30 days back in 2015 following a dui arrest. the eagles return to action this weekend. the birds are on the road to indianapolis. you can catch the game against the colts right here on nbc10 this saturday. coverage begins this saturday at 6:30 with eagles preseason

scattered clouds 72 degrees at 8:00. the winds will be picking up today. that will warm the temperatures a little faster than what we've seen in the last few days and the same wind will bring in more humidity. so the numbers are warming from the 60s to 70s and topping out near 90 degrees for philadelphia. and humidity will make it feel like the low 90s this afternoon. there say chance of late day showers and thunderstorms, we see plenty of sunshine, before those develop for the suburbs. lehigh valley, same possibility. right now just some scattered clouds. and new jersey into the upper 80s this afternoon and will feel steamier today. at the shore, it stays clear. plenty of sunshine for a beautiful day. i'll go through the forecast hour by hour when i come back in a few minutes and show you how quickly the temperatures warm up. but first, jessica boyington has the "first alert" update for the traffic department. >> bill, starting off in new jersey, we're going to update you there first. out in blackwood there's

construction on the lower landing road and black horse pike. that will be there until about september 7th an accident closure that might cause you delays, out the door in new jersey. also watching mass transit. the thorndale rain for septa running about 13 minutes late. that's the biggest delay so far. over to cherry hill, new jersey, route 70, near cornell avenue, no problems or delays. we'll check in with more when i come back. >> thanks, jessica. we're following breaking news in manayunk where a police sergeant was struck by a hit-and-run driver overnight. right now, investigators do have a man in custody. nbc10's pamela osborne is live in man ayunmanayunk. >> reporter: he's in stable condition. police, by the way, wrapped up their investigation here at the scene a little bit earlier this

morning. but you can see some of the yellow and blue markings left on the road there. that gives you a better idea of exactly where this happened. it started as a vehicle investigation. officers had pulled over a driver in that area of main street overnight. a sergeant arrived on scene to assist two officers that were here. as he was talking to one of those officers on the driver's side is of the patrol car, he was hit. according to witnesses, the suspect was traveling south on main street at a very high rate of speed. he hit the cruiser and the sergeant so hard, that he actually knocked him out of his shoes and launched him 15 feet. the suspect was driving a 2008 toyota rav4. he left the scene of the accident but he didn't get far. a tow truck driver who saw what happened followed the suspect to ridge avenue and called police station. we caught up with the suv and could see damage to the passenger side of that vehicle, consistent with the crash. the driver was taken into custody. now, aren't showing his face

because he has not been charged at this time. police tell us he's 21 years old and they suspected he was drinking. the sergeant is recovering this morning. he as a broken collarbone, but he is expected to be all right. as for the hit-and-run driver, witnesses actually positively identified him here. that's what police are telling us. they transferred him down to police headquarters. he's facing some very serious charges including aggravated assault on a police officer in uniform. reporting live in manayunk, i'm pamela osborne. 69 degrees outside. this morning, police in camden are looking for the gunman who shot an 8-year-old girl in the head. she was outside her house on spruce street. nbc10 was there as investigators searched the sidewalk for evidence. at last check, the police chief said it did not look promising. >> i can't even imagine what she's going through at this point in time.

i assured her that we're going to do everything we can to bring the cowards responsible for this, bring them to justice. >> police are looking at surveillance video as they gather leads. police are trying to figure out how a day of fun turned deadly at a delaware state park. >> a woman was on the go ape treetop when he fell 40 feet and died. the operator said it would be inappropriate to comment until the investigation is complete. state police are waiting to release the woman's name until her family was notified. as soon as we have more information on this story, we'll be posting it on the nbc10 app. montgomery county prosecutors are filing animal cruelty charges against a burk county man who supplied animals to local pet stores. the u.s. agriculture department

found dozens of animals in need of medical care. holmes is charged with 28 counts 'cruelty. pet smart, pet supplies plus have all cut ties with him. to decision 20 ke16, person attacks between donald trump and clinton, are escalating. trump said, quote, hillary clinton is a bigot who sees people of color only as votes not as human beings worthy of a better future. clinton responded by saying trump, quote, is seeking a hate in mainstream. and trying to connect donald trump with the alt right, the conservative movement. trump will campaign in new hampshire. and in dealing with the controversy surrounding the clinton foundation, critics are

questioning whether donations to the charitable organization, where they're coming from. yesterday, bill clinton defended the foundation saying he's proud of those who donated and the work the organization has done. he said the criticisms against his wife are just part of the election season. this morning, we're getting a fresh look at the damage from yesterday's earthquake in central italy. we have video from a drone that flew over the devastated region. take a look. the magnitude 6.2 earthquake has left 272 people dead and hundreds hurt. earthquake survivors in the devastated town of amatrice spent the night in tents and temporary shelters. here in the u.s. the national italian-american foundation is meeting with officials in washington to find out what that devastated region needs. >> it's rebuilding but also here in the states making sure we get the word out why this region would be important and others as well as retaining their economic vitality. >> he says he was in that region

earlier this summer. and plans to visit soon to help with relief efforts. take a look at this flattened starbucks in indiana. the coffee shop was destroyed by a tornado yesterday, about an hour outside of indianapolis. about a dozen people were hurt when the tornado toucheddown, vice presidential candidate and indiana governor mike pence is touring the damage. now, your nbc10 "first alert" weather. >> what a beautiful morning we have. sunshine heading out right now. we will see a sunny morning. there are a couple changes ahead, including the wind. a breezy and warmer day, riding in on those winds, humidity. you'll feel the difference this afternoon. the humidity will be building as we go into the afternoon. and through the afternoon, the clouds will also be increasing. there's a slight chance we'll see some of these, scattered showers moving through pennsylvania right now. late today, we could see them moving into the lehigh valley. some of the suburbs.

in today's "nbc10 responds" a viewer tells us when he tried to get his car fixed, he hit another bump in the road. with nowhere else to get him going again, he contacted harry hairston and "nbc10 responds." >> reporter: beverly glover chapman and her husband michael went through financial hardships last spring. back in may, his 2011 kia broke down on roosevelt boulevard. the engine seized. >> i had to file bankruptcy, for the car to go down how was he going to go to work. >> reporter: they felt the car was under warranty until the dealer explained differently.

>> it expired with 112 miles. >> reporter: he got good news. he and corporate officers sent his letter out of the blue. >> they had extended the warranty to 120,000 miles because he realized between 2014 and 2015, their vehicles were having issues. >> reporter: there was a catch, they said corporate needed two years of oil work proving that chapman properly maintained the car. chapman did not have the receipts. without that, the dealership told chapman he would be responsible for $5,130 worth of repairs. chapman said he started doing what he could to come up with the money. >> i started working a lot of doubles at my job. >> reporter: he told us after working 30 days of double shifts he decided to contact spn"nbc10

guys. >> thank you. >> announcer: now your nbc10 "first alert" weather. we've got sunshine. we'll see a lost sunshine but i'll be watching for clouds this afternoon coming in from the west. the temperatures are starting off warmer and we'll be coming up to levels that we didn't reach yesterday. into the upper 80s. it will wind up about 20 degrees warmer in philadelphia than right now. 69 degrees. 64 in the lehigh valley and suburbs. most of the area is in the 60s. we have seen a few spots in the 50s in south jersey. washington township is 64 degrees. a look at burlington county. 58 degrees. and lumberton and pemberton, in the very low 60s to start with this morning. the winds have shifted and will be a little stronger. the southerly wins or southwesterly winds will be delivering more humid conditions. you'll feel the difference today. breezy and more humid.

the wind is picking up, but so will the humidity. especially tomorrow. this afternoon, the additional humidity is going to feel like low 90s. doylestowns trenton, burlington and wilmington all in the low 90s. watch tomorrow, after cooling down into the 70s overnight, the temperatures will feel like more than 100 degrees tomorrow afternoon. things will change, though, for the weekend. during the day, we'll see sunshine. that will start the warming process. you can see clouds coming in from the west with the clouds, some scattered showers. there's a chance we'll get showers today and a chance we'll get showers tomorrow. we'll definitely get more muggy conditions for both days. for today, near 90 degrees. and into the 90s tomorrow. not as to tomorrow. 74 degrees, that's an indication of the higher humidity levels. partly cloudy skies. a slight chance of late day showers. and tomorrow, most likely in the lehigh valley and suburbs.

95 around scotch road in hopewell township. there's some big delays there. you can see the southbound sides right across the highway. not having any delays. we are watching delays and overcrowding for septa train 978 is running. a 31-minute delay as well, tracy. scientists say they have found an earth-like planet orbiting the star closest to the our own sun. they think it can support life because it's in the so-called gold goldilocks zone. next, we'll take a look at the stories we're following. safety measures on zika in a jersey shore town. high school football is back and high school blitz. you still have time to vote for the game of the week.

are in reno nevada, where she's expected to connect donald trump with alt white. a conservative group associated with white national im. and trump has decided to postpone the address. leaders in cape may are talking about dangerous beach slopes. in 2015, people were hurt from injuries from cape may. there's a meeting at the convention hall. in cochranville's chester county is closing. glenville farms is being sold. starting today, the farm will auction off cattle and farm machinery. the farm says falling milk prices and rising property taxes are forcing the sale. and today's independence national historical park will celebrate the 100 anniversary of the national park service. they'll have a ceremony and special activities.
