cascading like a wave across the nation's second busiest airport. just before 9:00 p.m., a loud noise mistaken for gun fire inside terminal 8. then terminals 4 and 7, more 911 calls, with guns drawn, police swept the airport. >> reports of shots fired. >> reporter: traveling on vacation, lester was at l.a.x. reporting live on facebook as the drama unfolded. >> people started flooding out, security people were saying shots fired when we saw two police cars coming down the taxi way at a very, very high rate of speed. >> reporter: in an unrelated incident, just before the reported gun fire, officers took a man dressed in zoro into custody, fearing his plastic sword was real, shutting down l.a.x. for more than an hour, gridlock on the road, more than 300 flights were

cancelled. the incident, the second scare in just two weeks. officers at jfk stormed a terminal there after false reports of gun fire. >> we don't want people to hesitate, we want them to call us if they believe there is something suspicious. >> reporter: tonight at l.a.x., business as usual. but only after a scene many here will never forget. airport police say they are still investigating what that loud bang was that was heard by so many people late yesterday. tonight, florida is bracing for impact as a tropical threat we have been telling you about closes in. there are concerns about a flooding nightmare and meteorologist dylan dryer is here. >> we have hurricane gaston, which is a category 2 storm that's moved out to sea, so we want to focus on tropical depression 8 and 9. 9 as already dropped

more than a foot of rain on parts of cuba. it should become a tropical storm sometime tomorrow and take this turn towards florida by the end of the week. that could produce tornadoes and flooding rain, we also have tropical depression 8 off the coast of north carolina, it should also become a tropical stormy at some point tomorrow. producing rip currents across the carolinas as well up to five inches of rain are possible. but savannah, we could see up to ten inches of rain and that could lead to flooding by the end of the week. after days of ever growing outrageous, the drug company that manufactures the epipen made a surprise announcement today. mylan pharmaceuticals says it will now offer a generic version of the drug. people say the generic epipen is still too costly and too much for a drug that can

mean the difference between life and death. tom costello with our report. >> reporter: the announcement follows weeks of backlash and outrageous over price hikes for a drug used most often to save children's lives. over 10 years the epipen has gone from $100 to $600. the two generic two pack will cost half that, $300, but consumer advocates say it's too little too late. >> mylan should cut it's price at least down to the 2007 level of $200. >> mylan's generic version will be more than what -- mylan is just essentially changing the label. >> it is an identical product, and they're calling it an authorized generic. mylan still has the whole market of the generic and the whole

market of the branded. >> reporter: the company has spent millions of dollars on product development. >> you need the right amount of epinephrine injected in seconds. and that's what our auto injector does. >> reporter: but the drug itself epinephrine has been around for 100 years and costs only $3. epipen has earned the company more than a billion dollars a year. in may, a statement i think you'll see opportunities for us to have the price for the pen increase. concern among consumer advocates, people will stick with the more expensive brand name they know. harry, there's late word tonight that the fbi is warning security officials -- our justice corporate pete williams is on the story tonight from washington.

pete, what can you tell us? >> reporter: this comes after an attempt to hack into two election systems this summer urjs -- in july, hackers got successfully into the computer system that illinois uses for online voter registration, copping some files that apparently didn't change anything and they apparently tried and failed to do the same thing in arizona. officials say the russians seem to have been behind both attacks. so far no sign that any of those have been compromised, but the fbi says states should be on guard to protect against computer attacks that could jeopardize the integrity of their elections. >> pete williams in our washington newsroom. thank you. a grim milestone to tell you about in chicago where august is now the most violent month there in 20 years. the city has seen 84 homicide this month
