nbc 10 news starts now. >> good morning. welcome back to "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary connors. >> and i'm vai sikahema. let's start with meteorologist bill henley in the nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather. fog coming out of burlington county. >> the worst of it is in new jersey with fog really not bad. we can see acrossle delaware from the adventure aquarium. the fog is thicker in some areas in the suburbs. quakertown has zero visibility. not an issue at all for pottstown and allentown. light fog in doylestown and blue bell. there's dense fog as well. mt. holly, quarter mile visibility, down to half a mile at toms river, half a mile in millville and dense fog in dover. to start with, we will see sunshine and the fog will be disappear. there's some light fog in the lehigh valley. this is the view from easton. clouds overhead. they'll be thinning out and this morning we'll warm into the 80s by late morning.
philadelphia, sunshine will take over, any clouds around this morning will disappear. the fog will thin out, too, even in new jersey where it's thi thicker. a wick warmup to 80 degrees at 10:00 and then 90 degrees this afternoon, upper 80s for most of the rest of the area for the exception of the shore, low 80s this afternoon. but there's another problem at the shore to worry about. that's the rip current risk. take a look at that when i'm back in a few minutes. first, jessica boyington with your first alert traffic. >> watching new castle, delaware, where an overturnedç tractor-trailer is blocking the 95 southbound ramp through 202. that's right around exit 5. a bit of a dark camera, route 202 around west chester pike. no big problems or delays there. also watching 95. through the work zone, a slowdown. for the most part, the drive time is keeping it together, southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway into center city. a 14-minute trip there. average speeds dropping into the 50s but not seeing anything too
significant yet. the northbound side looks great also. 13 minutes there. pretty much the same north or southbound on 95. there's construction in new jersey, i'll touch on that when i'm back in the next ten. >> we'll see you shortly. thanks, jess. we continue to follow breaking news after new castle county. that's where a truck driver was pulled to safety by other drivers after his big rig flipped over on the highway. >> pamela osborne is live outside police headquarters in new castle. pam, tell us what happened. >> people who witnessed this accident didn't wait for police to get there. they did call 911 but they jumped in to help right away. >> i really didn't see it coming. it happened so fast. >> that man's car was hit by the tractor-trailer before it flipped. witnesses tell us the driver of the big rig was on 295. he was attempting to merge on to the southbound lanes of 95 when he lost control. that truck traveled across three lanes of traffic before hitting
a double guide rail and overturning on the 202 ramp. other drivers who saw the crash jumped in to he had. they called 911. they tried to help the truck driver and passenger who was also in that truck get out safely. now, the two people inside of the truck as well as the gentleman that we spoke to also suffered minor injuries in the crash, as jessica mentioned, we're watching that area just as soon as that accident scene is cleared, we'll let you know. reporting live in new castle county, pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, pamela. police are looking for two gunmen who shot and wounded three people leaving a philadelphia corner store, including a 12-year-old girl. the shooting happened on west clearfield street at around 6:30. the 12-year-old was at the glass door when the shots went off, hitting her in the right thigh. she and a man who was hit in the ankle are both in stable condition. another man hit in the neck is in critical condition. one witness told nbc 10 he saw two of the victims moments
before the shots went off. >> they turned the corner. this is when i sat down. five minutes later, bang, bang, bang, bang. sounded like a war zone. >> police recovered two guns believed to be used in this shooting but they don't know the motive. they're also looking at surveillance video from the corner store for any leads. >> worshippers of a philadelphia church are coming together in the wake of this devastating fire. a small group gathered to pray last night outside of what's left of the church. the building stood at the corner of lansdowne avenue and 65th street and housed five different congregations. the local faith community is banding together, as expected. >> area congregations have offered space for worship on sunday, which is more than we can expect. it's just been a wonderful outpouring. >> about 300 people use this church weekly. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire here.
>> and now the new details about a burglary arrest in bucks county. police arrested steveç herman want for berg larrys last thursday and earl yes on monday. now police have released these photos of items they say they record after searching hermann's home. they found jewelry, silver certificates, coins and other items. investigators tell us they're checking dna evidence and other burglaries in falls and bristol townships as well as others to see if the suspect is involved in those as well. police arrested hermann after coming across items in a pawn shop. two strangers save a baby in a car on a hot summer day. >> i said there's a baby in this car, we need to get help. >> two shoppers heard a 4-month-old baby crying. one of the passers-by used a
sledgehammer from his car to knock out the passenger's side window and rescue the distressed baby. >> her head looked like a tomato. her head, fingers and toes were all red. >> i took the onsie and soaked it with water and cooled down her feet and her neck and head. and she started to really perk up. >> police say the baby's mother left the child in the back seat of her mini van while she went shopping at the kohl's. when the baby's mother, officers arrested and charged her with edge dangering the welfare of a child. texting will cost you more after today in delaware. governor jack markell will sign a bill that will double the initial find for texting and handheld cell phone use while driving. first offense fines will go up from $50 to $100 and fines for later offenses will increase from $200 to $300. it's a blow to hourly workers in new jersey.
yesterday governor chris christie vetoed raising the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour over the next five years. christie says that increase would put too much of a burden on small businesses and now democrats hope to put the measure on the november ballot. right now, the minimum wage stands at 8:38 an hour. new jersey and pennsylvania, workers make $7.25. in delaware, the minimum wage is $8.25 an hour. today republican nominee donald trump will travel south of the border to meet with mexico's president. both men confirm the last-minute trip via twitter. the meeting will happen just hours before trump is expected to deliver a major speech on immigration, that scheduled this evening in arizona. trump has made illegal immigration the center piece of his campaign. mexico's president has invited both trump and hillary clinton to meet with him.
a senior clinton campaign official tells nbc news that she is looking forward to talking with the mexican president at the appropriate time. in philadelphia today, you can register to vote at the courtyard inside city hall. the voter registration event runs from noon until 4:00 this afternoon. you must register to vote by october 11th in order to vote on november 8th for the general election. democratic vice presidential nominee tim kaine continues his first solo campaign swing through pennsylvania. he will be in bethlehem today. that follows his appearance in lancaster last night. he made a pitch there for the clinton/kaine ticket in a county thatç traditionally votes republican. now more on -- >> why do you think you have a chance in a county like this? >> the energy. we feel like the energy is very strong. we owe it to folks to go out and answer their questions, tell them who we are and make our
case. >> kaine hit trump hard last night for not releasing tax returns. he also said voters have a right to know more about trump's business dealings and his health. 5:39. incumbents won several key primary battles around the country. in arizona, senator john mccain won the right to seek a sixth term as a u.s. senator. he beat back a republican primary challenge by a assassinate senator who's a tea party activist. now to florida where senator marco rubio gets to seek a second term. he beat a republican primary challenged by millionaire developer. now rubio will face democratic congressman patrick murphy in november. embattled south florida congresswoman, debbie wasserman schultz won her fight against a challenger back by bernie sanders. she picked up more than 57% of the vote and will run in november for a seventh term. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> 20 minutes before 6:00. we've got some fog to deal with
this morning. this is a live view from lindenwold, new jersey. light fog there. not everybody is seeing the fog. in philadelphia, 73 degrees, low clouds and some very light fog in the city. 73 now, 81 degrees at 10:00. a little bit of a warmup and the fog disappears. we'll even see that in new jersey. we'll see a pretty good warmup. 89 in philadelphia. that's by 2:00 this afternoon. for the suburbs, 68 degrees right now. some areas down to zero visibility this morning but the same warmup will just make the fog disappear, 80s this afternoon for the suburbs and the lehigh valley, low clouds over easton this morning. clouds increasing this afternoon, along with the temperature, 62 now. 87 degrees later today. as far as new jersey is concerned, it's where we're seeing some of the thickest fog right now. 69 degrees in new jersey. 79, though, sunshine is here by 10:00 this morning, upper 80s this afternoon. 88 degrees by 2:00.
the shore, sea breeze blowing later today. 9 mile-an-hour wind at 2:00 this afternoon. low 70s and upper 60s to start with. the light fog at the shore will be disappearing. the temperatures will stay in the low 80s through most of the afternoon at the shore. for delaware, there are areas of thick fog to start with, 66 degrees. by 10:00 this morning, fog will no longer be an issue. not an issue at all this afternoon. but there is something else to be aware of. that's the rip current threat. the number of storms offshore are going to produce large swells and keep the moderate risk of dangerous rip currents for the jersey shore and the delaware beaches. not just today. it's right on through the holiday weekend. in fact, it could get worse as the weekend progresses. i'll show you why that is when i come back with the 10 day on 10 in just a few minutes. all right. thank you, bill. 19 minutes before 6:00 a.m. let's get a check on traffic for those of you traveling in south jersey. >> nbc 10 first alert traffic
reporter jessica boyington starts us off on the admiral wilson boulevard. >> we're starting there. that's maybe if you're heading into philadelphia this camera will be helpful for you. no problems or delays. right underneath the graphic is where the ben franklin bridge toll plaza çis. no problems or delays getting into philadelphia from new jersey. just watch out for any of that increase. we'll watch for you and we'll come back and let you in he. a disabled vehicle in abington, old york road and old welsh road. barrington, over in new jersey, a ramp closure, 295 around the white horse pike. that will be closed until about 6:00 this morning. watch for construction crews moving out of the way. also on the pa turnpike, still in the green, westbound and eastbound, 22 minutes from route 1 to valley forge. speeds also into the 60s. vai? honoring our wounded heroes. we'll show you how one county in our area is giving back to veterans wounded in action. also, immortalized.

last day of august. good morning, camden county as we give you a live look from the patco train station in lindenwold. a little bit of fog out there as bill was telling us earlier. lindenwold is now 71 degrees. the eagles announced last night that jeremiah trotter will be inducted into the hall of fame this season. he was a member of the nfc championship team in 2004 and spent eight years with the eagles. going in with trot will be the legendary voice of the eagles, merrill reed. he's been calling eagles games since 1977. the pair will be inducted on monday, november 28th when the eagles play the packers. tomorrow night preseason, right here at the linc, the eagles play the jets. towns in south jersey are
honoring wounded vets with new parking spaces. >> officials showed off the first of eight purple heart parking spots in front of camden county college in blackwood. the purple heart is given that those wounded or killed while serving our country. the signs were donated by the wounded warriors family support organization. at the event, one vet spoke about the meaning of wearing the purple heart. >> i've had fellows that received the bronze star medal of valor, the commendation medal. they told me they valued their purple heart more. it's because they had to shed their blood to get it. >> there are more parking signs and spaces at camden county l libraries and government buildings. there will be a soulful celebration at city hall. including ron jaworski. there will be a rally at noon.
they claimed their second championship in 11 seasons. afterwards, they will go to chickie's & pete's to continue the party. hawaii is preparing for not one, but two hurricanes. >> yikes. >> hurricane lester is childrening in the pacific ocean and could hit hawaii this weekend. this is video from the international space station. before that, hurricane madeline could hit this week. the category 2 storm is expected to bring hurricane force conditions tomorrow. the governor has already declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm. crews have started to stack sandbags on highways that are prone to flooding. crews are also cleaned out the entrances of canals in order to minimize flood damage. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> we won't feel any effects from that pacific storm. there are a number of systems in
the atlantic and the gulf of mexico that could pose a threat for our area, especially at the shore for rip currents. for today, we're seeing areas of fog but not in the city. that's a live view for center city. just a few scattered clouds, 73 degrees right now in the city. the dense fog is in new jersey. light fog at the shore and many of the suburbs seeing a fewç spots of fog this morning. not everybody. most of the suburbs are in the 60s. look at unionville, though, 58 degrees right now. 70 degrees meantime in warrenton and newtown is 71 degrees. satellite and radar, we are clear of any storms in our area. just to the south, you can see a storm spinning off the carolina coast. that's a tropical depression. depression number 8. it hasn't strengthened but it's still present and creating swells that will increase the rip current risk for the shore and the coastline. but a greater risk of rip currents from our area potentially come from this storm system.
looking more organized. see showers and thunderstorms on its eastern side. this could become a tropical storm later today. and potentially threaten the florida coastline before we get to the holiday weekend. the first storm system, that's tropical storm -- or tropical depression 8 could possibly become a tropical storm. but maybe not. possibly a minimal tropical storm by this afternoon. but look, it heads out to sea. even out to sea, it still poses a rip current risk for our area. that threat for the next few days. that threat will likely increase if that other storm comes together and intensifies, heads akrog the southeast and offshore, missing our area but coming close with stronger winds to potentially give us stronger rip currents over the holiday weekend. besides the rip current risk, the weekend is looking pretty nice, for philadelphia, saturday and sunday in the low 80s with very low humidity. for south jersey, low 80s as well. at the shore, look at sunday
afternoon, 75 degrees. monday it's going to be another beautiful day for labor day. before we get to the weekend, showers and thunderstorms. the first of them could come through this evening. more likely overnight tonight and into tomorrow. that's a cold front and that cold front passes and that's why we'll get beautiful weather for the weekend that will continue on labor day monday. 85 degrees. the humidity stays low for monday. but don't get used to it, because we could see another heat wave next week. look at wednesday, thursday and friday. temperatures back into the 90s. >> don't like the sound of that. all right. let's hope jessica has good news for us. >> let's see what you've got. 76, schuylkill? >> i am starting with good news. don't shut me up like that. eastbound drive time, we're still great, 13 minutes from the blue route to the vine street expressway. average speeds into the 50s there as well. you can start to see volume heading out the door there. also reports of an accident on 422 right around paulings road. that might tie you up just a little bit.

the guys all the time. i'm just so happy he represents us and i look forward to trying to figure out his next trick. >> i want john to help the team get like ten whens. that would be a nice trick right there. dorenbos is expected back on the field for the team's preseason finale tomorrow. a wish comes true for a young cancer patient in delaware. >> he became a police captain for a day. 5-year-old angel zamora has terminal brain cancer. he's always wanted to be a police officer, so new castle county made his wish come true yesterday. a motorcade brought angel and his family to carousal park in pike creek. they made angel a special uniform. the s.w.a.t. team also met with the family as did an army of officers and detectives, many on their own time. angel doesn't have a lot of energy these days but his mother tells us the day was magical. >> i know it's a blessing for us and it's a blessing for him as well. i will remember this for the rest of our life.
thank you for everything, everything the police did for us. >> doctors say children with his condition rarely live more than a year. >> i think angel knows exactly what's going on. >> they have plenty of pictures and everything. great day for everybody. this took the nation by storm. a few summers back, we're talking about the ice bucket challenge, another worthy cause. >> something that everybody was doing last summer. the als fund-raiser took on a decidedly south philly attitude. take a look. >> yes, that's not ice. that's cheese wiz. it's poured on als association volunteer larry kaplan. he travelled to all 50 states in order to raise money. proceeds from his challenge went to fight als.
