ross says the letter inside contained rambling words that pointed to hatred for police and probation officers. responding officers shot and killed the gunman. two officers before that were shot and wounded, four others were shot and one died this morning. we are live following the still unfolding investigation. i am rosemary connors. 5:30 this saturday. let's start with breaking news. here's what we know. a gunman ambushes a police officer, then goes on a shooting spree through the streets of west philadelphia. this morning one person is dead, two police officers and three others are in the hospital. this is where it started near 52nd and sansom.

the police commissioner tells us the gunman didn't say a word before opening fire on the police cruiser. the sergeant inside was hit several times. the rampage ended in an alley between sansom and walnut and 48th street. officers chased the shooter here and he was killed after exchange of gunfire. a lot happened between the two points. nbc10's monique braxton has the details for us this morning. she's live at penn presbyterian medical center in university city. that's where the officers are being treated now. monique? >> reporter: hi, rosemary. the two officers, one being a university of pennsylvania officer, another, a philadelphia police officer are recovering here at penn presbyterian. three other innocent people are being treated. we are waiting on word as to what hospitals they're in. one is listed critical condition, and one female has died. we learned the now dead gunman intentionally was targeting police and corrections officers

based on evidentiary covered at scenes overnight. the police commissioner says sergeant sylvia young, 19 year veteran is recovering. one female died, four others are recovering. commissioner ross tells us sergeant young was shot in the arm. her bulletproof vest hit as well near 52nd and sam son. >> you got an individual walking up on the police car, unprovoked, starts firing multiple rounds into the car. it is absolutely amazing that she's here as well as some of the other people. again, we're keeping the civilians in our prayers as well. >> reporter: police spotted the gunman, chased him eastbound on sam son from the first scene. the gunman fired into a bar, striking a security guard in the left leg, then grabbed a female, possibly using her as a shield or hostage. she's shot in the leg. the madman continues to run

eastbound. he fires into a car near sansom. he struck a man and woman in the chest. that's the woman that died. the man is in critical condition. the gunman didn't stop there. he continued eastbound on sansom, at 48th he engages with a university of pennsylvania police officer in an alley. three others enter the alley, a shootout happens, the gunman is killed. right now, we are told sergeant young has two adult police officers, and four shot weapons at the gunman. live outside penn presbyterian, monique braxton, nbc10 news. >> thank you for that. the mayor visited wounded police officers at the hospital, said both were talking with their families, had this message for all police officers. >> i just want to say to all our

police officers thank you for what you do for us every day, please, please, please, every shift, please wear your vest, please wear your vest. they will save your life. >> the mayor asked the city to pray for other people wounded in last night's shootings. this ambush happened in the same area where another officer was shot in an unprovoked attack in january. hartnett was in his patrol car when a gunman shot him several times. he was able to get out and chase after the suspect that was caught a few blocks away. we will continue to stay on top of this breaking news. there are a lot of moving pieces. we want to stay on top of it, keep you informed. follow it on air and on the nbc10 app through the morning and throughout the day. 5:34 on this saturday. let's get a quick check of the weekend weather. we check in with meteorologist

krystal klei. good news, right? >> the forecast for saturday is nice. philadelphia, 63. 53 in the suburbs and new jersey, lehigh valley. a lot of locations in the low to mid-50s, a bit better than yesterday when we saw upper 40s. delaware, 63, warmer there with more cloud coverage hanging overhead. today should be a mostly sunny forecast outside. 82 the forecast high temperature in the suburbs. 83 in philadelphia and across the board, we continue with lower 80s, including the jersey shore with 77, mostly sunny today, light to breezy conditions. we are tracking potential for storms. that possibility of showers, thunderstorms tracks sunday even into monday. we're going to take a closer look. details when things dry out coming up. we have an update this morning on the sexual abuse case against bill cosby.

yesterday, a montgomery county judge denied a request to have a phone call between cosby and his accuser's mother suppressed. during the call, the mother confronted cosby with her daughter's accusations. cosby allegedly offered to pay for the daughter to go to graduate school. he is accused of drugging and sexual assaulting her in his home in 2004. his trial set june of next year. hundreds of new jobs coming to berks county. they will redevelop a park near the airport in bern township. he believes it could bring 600 new permanent jobs to the area and hundreds of temporary construction jobs. philadelphia sugar house casino adding new jobs after winning the right to join new jersey internet betting market. a unit of the company won approval from regulators to be the 20th legal online gambling

let's look at your weekend forecast, starting with delaware neighborhoods. temperatures, 61 in harmony hills. 62 in wilmington. 58 for middletown. temperatures in the upper 50s, lower 60s. can't complain about these numbers. it is starting to feel like crisp fall air as we get ready for official first day of fall next thursday. dover, 55. smyrna, 57, lincoln, 55. along the jersey shore, temperatures are also varying, areas like ocean city, 68, atlantic city 67. some temperatures are a little off the shoreline cooler in low to mid-50s. even see upper 40s, mays landing 49 degrees. on the radar and satellite, just
