erything you need to make it picture perfect. now be sure to tag your mother because she needs more followers. ok. clearly, we have a lot of unanswered questions. this is a completely bizarre situation. >> two police officers and four other people shot in a targeted rampage. the shooter and one victim are dead. it started with a call for an officer down over the police radio, her cruiser under fire. commissioner richard ross tells us she was hit at least eight times. investigators say they're focusing on a note the gunman left behind, declaring his hatred for police. good morning, this is nbc10 news today. i am rosemary connors.
it is 6:00 this saturday. we have been following this breaking news since the early morning hours. nbc10's monique braxton is live at the hospital where the officers and other victims are being treated. we'll get to her in a moment. there's a lot to talk about. first, people may be making plans for this saturday. we want to get a check of the weather with first alert meteorologist krystal klei. fill us in. >> today's forecast looks like a nice day as we move forward. a little warmer but dry compared to yesterday. yesterday was dry, we hit that high at 80 in the afternoon. today will be warmer than that. then we will get your sunday forecast if you try to plan out the full weekend. sunday, there's a chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially as we move afternoon into the night as well as into monday as well. that potential will linger into the early part of the next work week. let's focus on today. temperatures at 60 degrees in philadelphia, wilmington, 62. or 52 in allentown.
52 in atlantic city, at the airport. temperatures that we are looking at are warmer than yesterday at this time, not incredibly so. some of us very similar like in philadelphia where we were about 60. allentown, pennsylvania suburbs are not looking at mid to upper 40s, instead in the lower 50s. satellite shows this is what we are tracking. these storms are headed our way. we will talk about when they time out in a bit. back to breaking news. two police officers and three other people in the hospital now. we learned not too long ago another one of the victims in this case, an innocent bystander has died. the gunman that shot them was killed by police. police commissioner richard ross tells us the man ambushed one of the officers in west philadelphia late last night. that's how it all started. you can see bullet holes in the police cruiser.
we will get you that video in a moment. a note found at the scene suggests the gunman was on a mission to target law enforcement. we are learning new details about the shooting spree, working to find out more about the shooter. nbc10's monique braxton is live at the hospital where the victims are being treated. walk us through this, monique. >> reporter: hi, rosemary, i saw one of the police officers and he confirmed, a police source, that a female innocent victim has passed away. we also learned that two of the police officers shot, one being an officer who worked 33 years with philadelphia, now a sergeant with university of pennsylvania recovering at penn presbyterian. he is here with the sergeant shot unknowingly sitting in her police cruiser, then of course three innocent people the gunman encountered on the rampage are recovering. one in critical condition. based on evidentiary covered at the scene overnight, the dead gunman was targeting police and
corrections officers. the rampage began at 52nd and sansom. sergeant sylvia young, a 19 year veteran was shot in the arm. her bulletproof vest hit as well. we spoke with a witness who heard rapid gunfire, maybe as many as 20 shots. >> they just ran, they was scared. we sit out here every night on the step and talk about different things they want to do. now they run in the house if they hear gunshots. not called for, man, need to stop. >> reporter: from the initial scene at 52nd and sansom, they chased the gunman eastbound, he was seen firing into a bar, striking a security guard in the leg. witnesses say the gunman grabbed the female, possibly to use her as a shield or hostage when officers were approaching. that female was also shot in the leg.
the madman continues to run eastbound on sansom, near 49th and sansom, he fired his weapon into a white car. a man and woman sitting in that car were both hit in the chest. we know that woman died, the man in critical condition. the gunman didn't stop there. he continued eastbound on sansom. at 48th in an alley, he engaged in a shootout with the university of pennsylvania police officer as well as philadelphia police. the gunman was killed in the alley. we learned from police commissioner ross that sergeant young has been with the force 19 years as we mentioned, has two adult daughters who have been here with her at the hospital. in all, four officers engaged in a shootout with a gunman who died. live for now in west philadelphia, monique braxton, nbc10 news. >> thank you for that. philadelphia mayor jim kenny called the shootout that left six people, including two officers wounded, a terrible,
scary night. he spoke after visiting the officers in the hospital. take a listen. >> i had the opportunity to be with both officers this evening and their families. one officer was cracking jokes and with his kids, his wife. the other was talking and with her family, so we are very happy and blessed that that's the way it turned out. >> mayor kenny said to pray for the others shot. the police commissioner says this ambush happened in the same area where philadelphia officer jessie heartnett was shot in january. he was on patrol, sitting in his cruiser when a gunman shot him. last night, commissioner ross compared the two cases. >> she had to do something very similar and i spoke to her as he did. she had to lean over to shield herself from as many rounds as possible. i asked her if he said anything, she didn't hear him say a word.
walked up on her and started to fire. >> officer hartnett was able to chase after him despite serious injuries. that gunman is facing attempted murder charges. we will stay on top of this through the morning. stay with nbc10 and the nbc10 app for continuing coverage and updates throughout the day. in other news this saturday, the mother of this camden girl killed in a gang shootout will have a candlelight vigil in her memory. she was eight years old caught in the shootout last month. her killer still on the loose. that vigil is 7:00 at 8th and spruce streets in camden. tonight's remembrance the day after they made an arrest in the killing. charged with hindering investigation. land made up an alibi for a person of interest in the case.
there's a $76,000 reward to find gabby's killer. in bucks county, investigators looking for the cause of this house fire. sky force 10 was over the scene. they battled heavy flames and smoke before getting a handle on the fire. there are no reports of any injuries. down the shore. tests will be done to figure out why this humpback whale that washed up on the beach died. yesterday sky force 10 was above 22nd street and crowds came out to look at the 33 foot 20 ton whale that washed up. workers from marine mammal stranding center pulled it further to shore. it was a young male emaciated but not injured. experts say even though it washed ashore yesterday, it died a few days ago. one homeowner says he noticed whales getting closer to shore
over the past year. >> i was kind of scared, big whales would come up while they were catching stripers within three miles of the beach. >> after the crew collects samples to find out how the whale died, it will be buried there on the beach. nine minutes past 6:00. two shot in a targeted attack by one man. four other innocent bystanders were also shot. one of the victims is dead along with the shooter. we will have the latest updates on the nbc10 app and here on the air. be sure to stay with us. also this morning, the eagles are preparing for monday night football. but it is what some players are planning to do before the game that's got plenty of fans talking.

minutes. some players on the philadelphia eagles planning to make a statement during the national anthem in chicago monday. that's the word from safety malcolm jenkins. he hasn't said what they'll do, but he said the demonstration is a call for social justice. >> moving forward, i am sure there will be guys that will probably join in. >> will you be one of those guys? >> most likely. >> they would be the latest team to echo social justice protest started by colin kaepernick. last night, nbc10 got this reaction from eagles fans. >> i think again it is expression of freedom of speech, it is an appropriate if not relevant platform to draw attention to these issues. >> i don't really disagree with it except i don't like the forum. i wish it could be done a different way in a different place.

we continue to follow breaking news. one woman is dead, five other people including two police officers are in the hospital after a shooting spree in west philadelphia. we know the officers are in stable condition. we are working to find out conditions of the other victims. responding police officers, and there are many, shot and killed the gunman following a chase. authorities tell us that a note found at the scene indicates that the shooter was after law enforcement. that was the target. we're going to continue to follow this through the morning. we have a live report from the hospital in moments. gunfire sent two police officers in fort worth, texas to the hospital overnight. one in critical condition. the officers were responding to a call when they found a wounded victim inside a house. they were checking a shed in the backyard when an armed man barricaded inside opened fire on them. the officers shot back. responding police fired tear gas to try to end the standoff.
the gunman was later found dead. this morning back in our area, we are hearing from the pistol packing pastor's wife who shot a robbery suspect in or to protect her family. the couple and their son were returning to their northeast philadelphia home after a concert thursday night. a man confronted them, demanding pastor robert cook's wallet and pointing to what appeared to be a shotgun in his face. >> he hit me really hard in the back of the head with the gun, swung it like a baseball bat and then everything looked like lightning for a minute. >> i yelled i think twice for him to put his gun down. then my husband said she has a gun. >> that was stephanie cook who knew what to do next. she pulled the trigger, shooting the man in the leg. police eventually arrested a man fitting his description with the gunshot wound to his leg. right now, he's facing multiple
charges in the case. beginning with your neighborhoods now, these are some philadelphia neighborhoods. temperatures in the 60s over much of the map. some 50s as well. 55 in dora. center city, 63. graduate hospital 61. fox chase in the upper 50s, a wide range mid-50s to the low mid-60s through parts of the philadelphia neighborhoods this morning. things are slightly warmer than yesterday morning. regardless, as you walk out the door, you'll feel that cool nature of the air that makes it feel more like fall. we're not officially in fall. that's thursday we see that official first day of fall. radar and satellite. clouds and radar showing us well to the west we have a line of storms, the orange and yellow, indicating pockets of heavy
rain, thunderstorms developing. not effecting us today. takes time for it to travel across the board here, but it will move west to east, meaning it will spread across the viewing area, starting with lehigh valley, spreading to the jersey shore. that will be sunday into monday. more in a moment. we have to talk drought levels. the report came out thursday updating the area, parts of the area, including philadelphia and new jersey now in moderate drought level. that's the first level of drought put out by the u.s. drought monitor. the rest of the area in yellow indicates areas of abnormally dry conditions. we haven't seen an official rainfall total picked up at the philadelphia airport since september 1st. looks like we will break that come sunday. that could help alleviate what we see on the board there. the top headline, weekend changes. moving forward, saturday is a lot different than sunday in terms of sky conditions.
temperature wise pretty similar. 83 for saturday, sunday 84. notice we go from mostly sunny and scattered clouds in the afternoon in philadelphia to partly cloudy to cloudy with showers and thunderstorms by sunday afternoon and night. same for the entire board. you see the changeover as you move into sunday. showers in the suburbs, lehigh valley, more cloudy. sunshine at the shore and new jersey and along some delaware beaches where temperatures also sit in the lower to mid-80s for the forecast. through the neighborhoods, focusing on temperatures. 84 in summer ton, westchester. 81 in allentown. 81 in lehigh valley. looking at new jersey, trenton, 83. cape may 77 same for atlantic city. and delaware, 82 this afternoon for wilmington. we are looking at temperatures that seem similar moving into the work week. more of that with the ten day on 10 coming up.

opening fire on this police cruiser. the sergeant inside was hit several times. it ended in an alley between sansom and walnut near 48th street where responding officers chased the shooter. the suspect was killed after exchange of gunfire. nbc10's monique braxton is live at penn presbyterian medical center in university city. that's where two officers and victims are being treated. monique, fill us in. >> reporter: hi, rosemary. we learned one female sitting in her car with a male friend has died. two of the officers, one including a philadelphia police officer, and retired philadelphia police officer currently working for university of pennsylvania are recovering here at penn presbyterian. both in stable condition. we've also learned one person the gunman encountered in his rampage is in critical condition. now we know the dead gunman was intentionally targeting police and corrections officers, based
on evidentiary covered overnight. philadelphia police commissioner ross says sergeant sylvia young, 19 year veteran is recovering. a female has died, four others shot are recovering. commissioner ross says sergeant young was shot in the arm. her bulletproof vest also hit near 52nd and sansom. >> that male did not say anything to her. he fired multiple shots. she was actually struck multiple times in the left arm. we believe there were rounds that struck her vest. fortunately she's talking and going to be okay. >> reporter: philadelphia police spotted the gunman, chased him eastbound on sansom street, from the first scene, he fired into a bar, striking a security guard in the leg, then grabbed a female, possibly using her as a shield or intended hostage as the gunman was approaching the police officers. she is shot in the leg as well. the madman continues to run
eastbound on sansom near 49th and sansom, fires his weapon into a white car. that's where a man and woman were sitting, minding their own business, but hit in the chest. we now know the woman sitting in that car has died, the man is in critical condition. the gunman didn't stop there. he continued eastbound on sansom, and at 48th street in an alley he engaged in a shootout with a university of penn police officer. that officer fired several shots, killing him. he was also met by other philadelphia police officers. in all, commissioner ross tells us four officers did shoot at the gunman who is now dead. we asked the police commissioner if the gunman is known to them. he told us it is way too early in the investigation to know that. but we can tell you that sergeant young is here with two adult daughters who have been at her bedside talking with her. she's lucky to be alive. back to you. >> monique braxton in university
city. thank you for that. philadelphia mayor jim kenny visited two wounded police officers at the hospital overnight and told us both were talking and with their families. as monique mentioned, the officers are in stable condition. the mayor had this message for the department. take a listen. >> i just want to say to all our police officers, thank you for what you do for us every day, and please, please, please, every shift, please wear your vest, please wear your vest. it will save your life. >> the mayor also asked for people to pray for the four other people involved in last night's shooting. this ambush happened in the same area where another officer, jessie hartnett was shot in an unprovoked attack in january. he was inside his patrol car when a gunman shot him. he was able to chase that suspect who was caught a few blocks away. we will continue to stay on top of this breaking news story.

afternoon. also looking mostly sunny. late today into tonight, we will see scattered clouds move in. otherwise, today is a dry forecast. no chance for rain. sunday, humidity increases and we see that chance of showers move through. we're going to track that chance of showers as we move along in a few minutes. we will have the future track model, talk about what's sitting to the west, and by the time it makes it to us what it will look like. we have an update this morning on the sex abuse case against bill cosby. yesterday a montgomery county judge denied a request by cosby's lawyers to have a phone call between cosby and his accuser's mother suppressed. during the call, the mother confronted cosby with her daughter's accusations and cosby allegedly offered to pay for the daughter to go to graduate school. cosby is accused of drugging and sexual assaulting andrea con stan at his home in 2004. his trial set for june next
