we are learning more about the man police say is behind the deadly shooting rampage in west philadelphia. this as new surveillance video shows an officer hitting the ground, as bullets flew overhead. police in new york are looking at this surveillance video from an explosion that rocked manhattan, and left several dozen people hurt. what we're learning about this investigation and the discovery of a second device. and this morning investigators look for clues trying to figure out who set off a pipe bomb blast in a jersey shore community. it happened just before a military charity run was about to begin. >> nbc 10 news starts now. >> good morning, this is nbc 10 news today, i'm rosemary connors.
it's 5:30 on this sunday. first, a quick check of your neighborhood weather. meteorologist crystal klei is cracking a bit of a warm start to our sunday. >> good morning, rosemary. we are looking at a sunday forecast that's a little warmer than the past couple of mornings. as you step outside you're going to notice the difference. and the difference is because today we have more moisture moving in. today, as we move in to your afternoon, early day, some isolated shours are possible. then as we move in to your evening and overnight, that's when showers and thunderstorms are more likely as we move throughout the night, things will spread from west to east. this is ahead of a cold front that will start to affect us on your monday. temperatures where they are right now. so this is the difference here. 70 right now philadelphia. for that temperature, yesterday the temperature was about 60 degrees. so we're seeing a pretty big difference here this morning. also helping to hold in some of the heat is more clouds that are moving in throughout today. 71 temperature in allentown, coatesville at 66 right now and
wilmington at 68. atlantic city at 72 degrees. the difference is a little more obvious as we take a look at that difference in the last 24 hours. 18 degrees warmer than yesterday in allentown. ten degrees warmer in philadelphia. and also 18 degrees warmer at atlantic city. so as we move into the afternoon, things are looking warmer as well. coming up we're going to talk about the afternoon temperatures and more on the timing of that chance of rain. we'll see you shortly. >> thanks. breaking news out of port richmond neighborhood, three people are in the hospital after gunshot wounding after a shooting just outside a night club on caster avenue. one of the victims is in critical condition. police tell us an argument in the club's parking lot escalated into gunfire. two women and a man were wounded. right now there are no arrests in the case. this morning we are learning more about the gunman killed in the philadelphia shooting rampage.
police say he shot six people including two officers. nbc 10's lauren is live at police headquarters. >> police know this man. he has a lengthy criminal history. but they're still trying to figure out why he sped off on this rampage. this is nicholas glenn, 25 years old. investigators say he left behind a note outlining his hatred of police. but detectives are still searching for a specific motive behind what happened. the shooting killed a woman and wounded five other people including two police officers. investigators are speaking to glenn's family and friends. police commissioner said the note found on glenn's body described his frustration with a probation officer but most of what was written was rambling. >> it's more about himself than it is about who he wanted to harm. obviously he was hell-bent on hurting a lot of people. we still ront absolutely clear
as to why. >> have not found anything that ties glenn to any group or radical ideology. his former lawyer told nbc 10, glenn's time in solitaire confinement while he was in jail changed him. even though police say they have not yet determined what the motive is, they say they will not stop looking to find out. we are also digging into this case and will have more coming up at 6:00. for now, live at police headquarters, i'm lauren mayk, nbc news. >> video appears to show one of the shooting victims hitting the ground after he may have been struck by gunfire. five people remain in the hospital this morning. one officer has a bulletproof vest to thank for saving her life. we're also told a bar manager is in good spirits. police commissioner richard ross says they are lucky to be alive. now, a surveillance camera from a nearby business captured this video showing an officer, possibly university of
pennsylvania office edward miller confronting gunman nicholas glenn, who shot him in the leg. you see the officer falls down but he manages to get up and limp to take cover behind an suv as he waits for backup to arrive. officers cornered glenn in an alley along 48th street and killed him. neighbors tell us they expected to see more reaction from local leaders about the violence on their streets. >> just like a normal day. it's not supposed to be like that. every leaders, every council person, every state rep should be here right now. >> sergeant sylvia young was on special detail. again we're told that she is recovering in the hospital from her gunshot wound. we've also learned that the police union will donate the proceeds from its tailgate party on monday to the injured police officers. our coverage continues in just a few moments with the frantic calls for help and a detailed time line of what happened. stay with nbc 10, and the nbc 10
app for updates on the investigation. our team of reporters will continue to search for answers about the suspect's past and bring you the latest on the victims' conditions. new from overnight, philadelphia police come under fire in south philadelphia. it started just before midnight at 9th and south street when officers spotted two men allegedly smoking marijuana. the officers approached, the men ran. police say they were shot at four times as the men fled. no one was hurt and police tell us they did not fire their own weapons. the suspects were taken into custody and investigators recovered a revolver. new video this morning of an explosion in new york that injured more than two dozen people. take a look. yeah, you can see the moment of the explosion captured by this surveillance camera at a fitness center. the video also shows people scrambling as the blast went off. last night's explosion in manhattan's chelsea section shook the neighborhood and
demolished a metal trash bin. new york's mayor called it an intentional act but with no apparent link to terrorism. investigators say they also found a pressure cooker attached to wiring and a cell phone sever several blocks away. reaction from neighbors in our next half hour. authorities say the explosion in new york does not appear to be linked to a pipe bomb blast in seaside park, ocean county. it happened just before a charity run there yesterday. >> we need to shut down this run. shut down this run. >> the device went off inside this trash can along ocean avenue as thousands of people were waiting for a marine corps charity run to start. sources say additional undetonated devices were also discovered in the trash can. nobody here was hurt. in camden a call for justice from the family of a murdered 8-year-old girl. they held a candle light vigil
outside gabby hill carter's home last night. the little girl was shot, got caught in the cross fire while she was playing outside last month. nobody's been arrested in the case. there is a $76,000 reward. 5:38 right now on this sunday. coming up, a special honor for the family of a new jersey state trooper who died in the line of duty. we'll show you how the community is remembering him. and also up next, it's a big day for the new philadelphia temple of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints. we'll have details on the temple's dedication.

the cold front is still pretty far off here. but ahead of the front is the thicker cloud cover, starting to head our way and the storms now moving through central parts of pennsylvania. that's going to start to affect us first with the cloud coverage as we move through your morning, early afternoon. then with those spotty chances of rain that will be more developed overnight. so right now, just some early spot showers edging close to the lehigh valley here. that's the whole start of your rain, maybe some isolated storms. early afternoon could see a little thicker cloud cover pushing throughout new jersey, as well. and then as we move overnight, that will start to extend across the board. so here is your day with numbers. we're 70 right now in philadelphia. just a little warmer than yesterday at this time. right now, 5:41 is the time. 79 your temperature around 10:00 a.m. and then as we move into your afternoon we'll move to the mid 80s. let's look at the high officially of 85. some might bump a little hire than that with winds at about 10 miles per hour.

sunday. now to the aftermooth of that deadly shooting rampage in west philadelphia. police say nicholas glenn shot six people killing one of them. two police officers were among the injured. nbc 10's george spencer takes us through the time line of the chaos that unfolded on that fateful night. >> reporter: it started with a call at 11:19 p.m. friday night, for an officer down. >> help me, please! >> reporter: help was on the way. miraculously that officer survived a hail of bullets. >> extreme caution. take cover. >> reporter: as officers rushed to help, nicholas glenn was on the move. he went down sampson street from 52nd to 51st. >> coming from everywhere down here. >> reporter: his next target, five shots into a bar. he then slowly walked to his next location, 49th street, where he fired a barrage of bullets into a car with a man and woman inside.

trooper cullen was outside of his cruiser while responding to an accident on route 295 in west stepford when he was hit and killed by a passing car. cullen's fiancee was pregnant at the time. she has since given birth to the couple's second son. protest the obama legacy. that's the message democratic white house nominee hillary clinton delivered at the congressional black caucus gala in washington last night. clinton told the crowd that a donald trump legacy would be dangerous especially for african-americans. >> it's not about golf course promotions, or birth certificates. we need ideas, not insults. real plans to help struggling americans in communities that have been left out and left behind. not prejudice and paranoia. >> president obama also addressed the gala, doubling down on his support for clinton by making this

wall with mexico. he vowed to deport criminal immigrants and not allow them back in the country. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> and we begin with your neighborhoods right now. temperatures are a little warmer than they were yesterday at this time. we're actually 71 degrees in the lehigh valley. yesterday you might remember that number being considerably lower. and two mornings ago we had 40s on the board. this is a big difference. thank the cloud cover that moved in overnight as well as some of that warmer, moist air that's starting to push in ahead of the storms that we do expect. in the suburbs, 68, philadelphia, 70 degrees. delaware, 69. check out the shore at 72 out there. so, shore points not going to see a ton of warming as we move through this afternoon. we've been seeing that the last few days. now a look at your neighborhoods right now, into the philadelphia neighborhoods, 70 degrees, we're at 71 society hill, center city at 69 degrees. also looking at those lower 70
spots, chase, and those upper 60s in buffleton. the temperatures out there this morning don't feel too badly. you're going to notice it's a little more humid, as well. and it will be more humid through today because we've got the thicker cloud coverage starting to press our direction. already creeping into the lehigh valley and then more scattered clouds moving throughout new jersey this morning. the rain is still to our west at this point. but now moving to areas like williams port. so we are looking at that rain now in pennsylvania, and heading our direction. it will be spotty to start. then we'll see it spread overnight into monday a little better chance of showers. we're watching the temperatures, as well. looking at those numbers. just an up and down so we've got 80 on friday, and then 83 yesterday. which was the forecast. these numbers are above average. we should be at 77 degrees. on your sunday, today, 85 for the forecast. then we drop, again, on monday. you see that to 80 because of the cold front that's going to bring in that rain.
we are back up tuesday to 85 degrees. so we're tracking the hour potential out there, and the focus really is going to be sunday,s specially as we move late day night into monday. today's not an entire washout especially if you go farther east to areas like the shore. dover a little better chance. but sunday for atlantic city, not a great potential until sunday night into monday. reading, that chance will be better off through afternoon, overnight and then also into your monday. that's what we're expecting when it comes to your forecast rainwise before we dry out. take a look more sunshine by your tuesday, wednesday and thursday. and temperatures moving right back into those mid 80s where we continue through your friday into saturday. the lower 80s, and there's the drop-off back into the 70s by your following weekend. sunday at 77. >> 5:51. tonight is tv's big night as the 68th annual emmy awards will be handed out.
