tuning in just before they go to sleep, and everyone who's just waking up from the vice presidential debate. [ laughter and applause ] it was the only debate between tim kaine and mike pence, but many viewers were left disappointed after 90 minutes of debating. we still don't know where either candidate stands on rosie o'donnell and that's unfortunate. listen to this. [ laughter and applause ] even though tim kaine or mike pence could be our next vice president, a new poll finds that 40% of americans don't know who they are. [ laughter ] how's that possible? [ cheers ] so, we sent one of our writers, becky, to the street with a a photo line-up that included tim kaine and mike pence and a a bunch of random tv actors to see if anyone could pick them out, so please enjoy our newest segment, "vp or tv." [ cheers and applause ] ♪ vp or tv yeah >> hi, jimmy. i'm down here on the streets of new york to see if anyone can recognize the vice presidential candidates. can you identify vice presidential candidate,

[ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: whoa, that's what i'm talking about right there. thank you, pal! hopefully tonight's debate made them a bit more recognizable. i also saw that a writer for politico is saying this is the week that will decide the election. americans are furious. they're like, "you mean i paid attention for the last 65 weeks for nothing?" [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] "this is the week?" that writer is also claiming the next ten days will be donald trump's final shot at repairing his candidacy, you know, not counting his last two dozen final shots. [ laughter and applause ] "this time, we mean it." did you see these former cast members from "the apprentice" are now saying that trump would often ask contestants to wear dresses that were short and showed more cleavage. and gary busey was like, "i did it and still lost." [ laughter and applause ] "i still didn't win!" oh, i saw there's a new reality
show where seven millennials made up of both hillary and trump supporters are put in a a house together to talk about politics. [ laughter ] and the show is called, "um, no thanks." [ laughter and applause ] the other big story is wikileaks founder julian assange, who promised to released significant material on oil companies and politicians. yeah. people were ling, "let me guess. they're all corrupt?" and he was like, "damn it! yeah." [ laughter and applause ] a little celebrity news here. the first excerpt from lil wayne's prison memoir, "gone 'til november," reveals -- [ laughter ] the first excerpt. >> steve: yeah. just the first. >> jimmy: the first excerpt came out and reveals that he was nervous as hell to rap for his fellow inmates. [ laughter ] meanwhile, a wells fargo banker imprisoned for fraud said, "same here. that was unnerving." [ light laughter ] pal, thank you for being here. thank you for coming back to the show. >> oh, thanks for having me, jimmy. >> jimmy: we love you so much. i want to talk about the play. want to talk about everything, but you used to live in new york for a while. >> yeah, came after 1975.
>> jimmy: before that, you were in -- missouri? >> springfield, missouri. [ cheers ] >> jimmy: i have a photo of a a young john goodman in missouri. [ applause ] what was the -- i like this dude. what was he into? >> that poor little guy, right after that picture, went home and got into his brother's "playboys." [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: what was he -- did he -- >> he wanted to be a radio announcer. >> jimmy: he did want to be -- like a dj? >> yeah, yeah. >> jimmy: like a -- what was your name? would you be -- johnny -- >> i wanted to be johnny b goode. >> jimmy: johnny b. goode. >> but some guy already took it. [ light laughter ] he worked for the fm station, so he's -- [ low voice ] "we're going to have alice's restaurant, the whole record coming up, so start your reel to reel." [ laughter ] but i was going to be more like this. we're coming up on 10:00 and and we're going to be at crestwood plaza next week. we have a -- all the kids can come down. >> three minutes before 10:00. we got the ronnettes taking you to news time. >> jimmy: we got herman's hermits right here. we're giving away some tickets right now. >> they're going to be at heel auditorium next week. >> jimmy: my djs growing up, we had "the bulge" and "the wolf." >> "the bulge?" they had "the"s in front of their name? >> jimmy: yeah, i think his name was mark bulger and they called him -- >> the bulge. >> jimmy: the bulge, yeah. >> any relation to -- >> jimmy: "agh, it's the bulge!" and you hear like explosions -- look at that dude. yeah, he grew up to be -- he came up to be one of the best actors. [ laughter ] >♪ oh god i need -- [ laughter ] >> jimmy: what was it like to be -- were you an actor at this age? did you start acting young? or did you -- >> i started acting in 8th grade. >> jimmy: you did? >> yeah, we -- i was in a drama class, and we had a a professional actress for a a teacher, and we did a spring play called "you can't take it
with you," and i was grandpa. [ light laughter ] and the night of the play, i started a speech at the dinner table, talking to my family, and i forgot everything i was going to say, so i stood up and started walking around the table and just making things up. >> jimmy: is that right? >> yeah. and i sat back down again and one of the class bullies was in the play. he was going to pound me, but the teacher was really hot. she gave me a real big hug and a kiss. and she dug it, yeah. >> jimmy: she said good for you, man. >> so never learn your lines. >> jimmy: yeah, exactly. don't learn your lines. but this is -- this is exciting, because the play that you're in right now -- so you're doing "the front page," and one of the first plays that you ever did in new york city was with nathan lane. >> yeah, i think it was the first play i did in the city when i was -- when i got my union card with nathan lane and my friend, dan florek. who was on "law and order: svu" and "law and order" for years. >> jimmy: of course, yeah.
>> and yeah, we started hanging out then. >> jimmy: what was the play? do you remember? >> "midsummer night's dream." >> jimmy: shakespeare? >> the disco version. [ laughter ] it was the '70s. >> jimmy: wow. >> and yeah, our director had a a vision. >> jimmy: wow. [ laughter ] did that work? >> no, but it was fun. [ laughter ] we had a -- we're not getting paid anyway and there was a a newspaper strike when we opened, so we didn't get any reviews except for a german language paper called aufbau. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: and did they enjoy it? >> i reckon. >> jimmy: i want to see that. a disco version of a "midsummer night's dream." >> it was the '70s, going into the '80s. >> jimmy: i cannot wait to see you in this play. what is "the front page" about if someone doesn't know? it's been around for a long time. they -- "his girl friday." >> 1928 is when it opened. it was written by charles macarthur/ben hecht. it moves like a freight train, man. it just goes. yeah, and it's -- >> jimmy: and it's funny. >> it's funny. >> jimmy: it's good stuff. >> it's really good. >> jimmy: i heard

>> so they -- i was at the premier of the "hamilton" documentary at the new york film festival and lindsey, who works on the show, e-mailed us and said, "there's an impression of you tonight." i looked at my phone, i looked up at my wife and said, "we have to go home." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: you gotta see it. >> we have to run home. and we ran home to go watch. >> jimmy: "family feud," like celebrity "family feud" episode and cecily strong played you. [ laughter ] >> i know. the greatest. >> jimmy: i want to show a a clip, because it was so good. look at this. cecily strong, "saturday night live." >> next we got "hamilton" creator and the number one rapper on pbs, lin- mawen-mem -- lin-manuel miranda. i mean, how -- we talked about this, i know, going from just fans of, you know, "saturday night live" and theater and talking to your dad and meeting your family and talking to your mom and dad, and your dad's love of musicals and getting you into it. and then you met my dad too and he was -- >> oh my god, it was a summit. it was our parents -- our parents met like -- >> jimmy: parents met. they wanted to make sure everything was legit. yeah, exactly, yeah. [ light laughter ] >> with our friendship. and my sister was like, "i told you you'd be friends!" [ laughter ] >> jimmy: and it was so great. but we -- i also got to hear a a taste, a tasty taste of the "hamilton" mix tape that i can't even tell you, it's so good. it is beyond good. >> that's thanks to these guys. >> jimmy: yeah, the roots.
