it's colder outside. a live view of the art museum. the tree is lit there. a little breeze blowing the flag in front of that building. the wind is wloeing. we have windshield readings in the lower 30s. philadelphia feels like 34 degrees. feels like below freezing in allentown. 1 degree above freezing for wilmington this morning. it's a cold start but we'll see clear skies all day long. sunshine will warm these temperatures up. 37 in the suburbs. 38 degrees in delaware. lehigh valley at 35 degrees. warm-up about 10 degrees in the lehigh valley with sunshine. 50s for delaware. low 50s for philadelphia. near 50 degrees in the suburbs. at the shore, while inland hit 52, a degree warmer this afternoon. sunny skies and a nice warm-up. i'll go through the forecast hour by hour in ten minutes. first, jessica boyington with your first alert traffic. >> good morning, everyone. around route 29, no problems or delays. drive times, seven minutes northbound from 29 to the
schuylkill. speeds into the 60s. we're not seeing any big delays. 42 freeway in new jersey looks great. northbound and southbound. we typically look at northbound side for any delays, at least for the morning because that's what traffic is moving toward philadelphia. we'll end in northeast philadelphia where there's an accident. a crash reported on the boulevard northbound around elbridge street taking out lanes into the outer drive. this morning we're following breaking news in allentown where flames ripped through eight row homes. overnight crews got control of the flames. the fire started early last night on north fulton street. cruise evacuated people on the block as they fought the flames for hours. nbc10's katy zachry is on the scene with an update. what do we know? >> reporter: tracy, it was some incredibly tense and very sad moments last night and in the overnight hours on fulton street. this is block of row homes is
the stretch that was damaged. some homes a total loss. the fire is now out. you can see an engine is staying on the scene to watch for hot spots in case they flare up. let's go to video of what happened overnight. allentown fire department called in for extra manpower as the fire grew in size. it took four hours for firefighters to get it under control. a firefighter tells us it began in the middle row home. we are told everyone on the block made it out okay, though i am still waiting for official word that no one, including firefighters, was injured. neighbors say it is the worst thing that's happened on their street. they're just grateful it did not happen overnight while people were sleeping. >> the time of night, what time it start, nobody was sleeping. it was early. that means someone was able to combat it. >> reporter: people were awake enough to get out. >> yeah, nobody was sleeping. nobody was sleeping.
>> reporter: you may have caught in the middle of that comment that witness speculating about the cause of the fire being a heater. at this point the fire marshal has not come out with the official cause of what began this fire. at the top of the broadcast we told you more than 20 people are being assisted by the red cross. 23 to be exact are being helped with food, shelter and lodging by that agency. reporting live in allentown, katy zachry, "nbc10 news." an early morning fire in north philadelphia. when our crew arrived around 1:30, there were still flames coming from the roof of this row home at 24th and montgomery avenue. firefighters quickly put out those flames and no one was hurt. investigators are looking for the cause of a deadly fire in philadelphia we brought you as breaking news as night at 11:00. one man died in a fire that ripped through a building and stores with apartments above them in cobbs creek. nbc10 was at 64th.
witnesses say they heard a loud boom before flames broke out. firefighters found compressed gas sill cylinders which likely ignited. five minutes past 6:00. happening today officials in philadelphia will double-check votes from dozens of precincts as a push for election recount in pennsylvania. those precincts are a fraction of precincts across the state. the green party is calls for precincts in pennsylvania. a court hearing on the statewide recount is set for monday. also lawyers for donald trump are blocking a recount that was set to start today in michigan. and a recount is already under way in wisconsin. president-elect trump won all three states. retired marine general james mattis is president-elect trump's choice to run the pentagon. can you see mattis in between mr. trump and vice president-elect mike pence in
this video from last month. he's regarded as a hard-liner on iran. president-elect announced him at a rally last night. reports say chris christie could be next chairman of the republican national committee. if he's named christie would fill the post reince priebus is leaving to become president-elect trump's chief of staff. reports say it's possible the governor could finish out his term in office and leave the rnc at the same time. today a new jersey judge is expected to decide if she'll appoint a special prosecutor to investigate chris christie in the bridgegate scandal. >> activist argued christie knew of the scheme in 2013. the governor denied that and has not been charged in the case. two of christie's aides were convicted of conspiracy. the newest and largest wawa in center city will officially open its doors at 19th and
market streets. mayor jim kenney will participate in the ribbon-cutting at the store later this morning. here it is. the city's police and fire departments will take each other on in the charitable hoagie building competition. here's a perk for customers. the store will offer free coffee all day, any size. >> hot coffee will be good today. much cooler than the last couple of days, bill. >> you need something warm today. coffee, that might do the trick, and a heavy coat, too. it's cold enough that the rink at penn's landing has refrozen after the rain yesterday led to a huge puddle. look at the festive colors this morning. the christmas tree lighting will happening tonight at 7:00. it will be chilly for that. in fact, we're getting a cold start this morning. in between now and then we'll see a lot of sunshine. at this hour, no sunshine just yet so the temperatures are still falling. 37 degrees in the suburbs. 38 in delaware. while it's 40 degrees at

:13. a live look at blue river cross rink. we'll be there for the tree lighting tonight at 7:00. it's a live half-hour special on nbc10. we're so looking forward to it. the whole team. >> it will be fun. police in trenton are trying to figure out who shot and killed a passenger in a lyft car. the mercer county prosecutor's office tells nbc10 a gunman jumped in the ride-sharing service car wednesday night to try to rob three passengers. amber dudley was shot during the confrontation and died later at a hospital. no one else in the car was hurt. former nfl running back joe mcknight is dead. he was killed in an apparent road rage incident in louisiana. according to the sheriff, the other motorist shot and killed mcknight when he got out of his car yesterday. he was pronounced dead at the scene. he played for usc and parts of four seasons in the nfl, also in the canadian football league. he was 28. mourners in cuba are bidding
farewell to fidel castro. they lined the streets as the cuban leader's ashes mrooufd through during a procession. they are headed for burial in santiago where castro was born. he died friday at the age of 90. buzz aldrich, the second man to walk on the moon, is recovering on a new zealand hospital after being evacuated from the south pole. the former astronaut was visiting antarctica as a tourist when he fell ill. he arrived in new zealand earlier today. the tourist company says he had fluid in his lungs but is responding well to treatment. the engineer who fell asleep before a deadly train derailment in new york in 2013 is suing the railroad for $10 million. william rockefeller filed the lawsuit, three years to the day when the metro north train derailed killing three people. he says the rail lane values on-time performance over
workers. he wasn't hurt in the crash. federal investigators found the engineer was exhausted from undiagnosed sleep apnea when he nodded off and fell asleep. jessica boyington has her eyes on the camera at 295 and south jersey, right? >> that's right. 295 and around the route 168. we typically will see a little delay. maybe a little later on in the morning time, but right now we're doing just fine. southbound drive times are moving from 38 headed towards this point at black horse pike before route 42 and 676 split. maybe you're headed to philadelphia or different parts of south jersey. a 1-minute trip and average speeds into the 60s. you can see through the ongoing work we're not having any major problems. northeast philadelphia we're looking at the crash on the boulevard where outer lanes are closed, northbound around levick
street. i-95 to woodhaven, nothing majorly impacting 95 but the one left lane is getting by off the ramp. not a big problem right now. you can see some road flares are out because of a disabled vehicle. a tow truck just got to the scene. they'll probably be clearing this out soon. on the pa turnpike looking good, too. route 1 to valley forge, a 22-minute trip. a really easy -- kind of easy morning drive so far. not seeing any big delays on the majors. i'll have updates for you when i come back in about ten minutes on more of the drive times. >> an easy drive, you know you just jinxed us, right? now let's check the weather with bill henley. >> it's colder outside so you need to bundle up. notice this view from the comcast center in center city. the skies are starting to brighten up. we're about 45 minutes away from sun viz. with clear skies we'll see lots of sunshine.
without the sun up it's a cold morning and temperatures are still falling at this hour. we'll see bright sunshine. a nice warm-up during the day. the wind will be blowing this afternoon. we'll top out around 50 degrees. that's typical for the beginning of december. cold breeze blowing this evening. if you're coming down to penn's landing for the christmas tree lighting, you'll have to bundle up if you don't want to deal with the cold. we'll show it to you live on nbc10 at 7:00. 34 right now is what it feels like in philadelphia. the wind is blowing just enough to make it feel like it's in the 30s this morning. dry at the bus stop but temperatures will be in the 30s at 8:00 this morning so you'll have to bundle up in redding, atlantic city and philadelphia. sunshine nice and bright. a few high clouds. there's no wet weather with these clouds moving through the lehigh valley and into the suburbs. those will blow through. mostly it's going to be sunshine today. but that wind will still be with us on saturday into the weekend, so it's going to keep things chilly. 49 on saturday afternoon. very low 50s for jersey.

another vehicle here. 26 minutes either way on the schuylkill expressway right now, eastbound from the blue route to vine street expressway and average speeds into the 30s. we're seeing pretty big slowdowns on the schuylkill. 422 looks okay. nine minutes, that's it. eastbound to schuylkill expressway, average speeds into the high 50s. we're following breaking news this morning in allentown where overnight firefighters got kroefl these flames ripping through a city block in allentown. this morning eight row homes are damaged and nearly two dozen people are out in the cold. the fire started early last night along north fulton street and some of the people who live on this block have lost everything. this comes weeks before christmas. nbc10's katy zachry has been on the scene all morning long and talking to some victims. what can youl affas has been restored to the 400 block of north fulton in allentown with the exception of this stretch of row homes, eight to be exact.
vai, as you said, fire tore through these row homes last night. more than half a dozen families were forced out in the cold. now, this fast-moving fire on north fulton in allentown began after 8:00 last night. firefighters tell us it began in the middle row home of the block, possibly in the back of the house. a man and two children, we're told, were the first to report it. neighbors say this block is filled with families. many just poured out of their homes into the cold because of the fire. a couple of eyewitnesss tell me it was heartbreaking to see. young children forced out of their homes and shivering in the cold. >> they were crying, laying on the ground, shaking their head. >> reporter: and there were some kids who lived here? >>, yeah a lot of kids lived over there. all the houses have kids. everybody lose everything like that. >> reporter: now, some rescue workers and eyewitnesss who were
here at the scene tell me there were no injuries to any of the people who live on this block or to firefighters. i am still waiting for official confirmation there were no injuries as a result of last night's fire. i'm also waiting to hear from the fire marshal as to what they think caused this fire. reporting live in allentown, katy zachry, "nbc10 news." meantime, investigators are looking for the cause of a deadly fire in philadelphia last night. one man died in the fire that ripped through a building with stores and apartments above them at 64th and callowhill in cobbs creek. some families who were evacuate ready back in their homes this morning. from our delaware bureau. wilmington fire department is mourning one of its own. the city commissioner announced the dead of senior firefighter ardy hope. she's one of three who died battling flames at a row home in september. she was listed in icu and critical and stable earlier this week. captain christopher leach and
lieutenant engineery fickes were also killed in the fire. beatrice fana-ruiz was arrested. she lived in the house with her mother and stepfather and admitted to setting the fire. we have more details on the explosion of a center city home last month. we're getting new video and pictures of the who the fbi calls a person of interest. they refer to the person as a male but acknowledge it could be a woman. they say the person on surveillance cameras on pine and lombard a couple days before the blast. jim alden suffered shrapnel scars on his face, arms and chest when he was delivered a package to his home and it exploded. police are offering $10,000 for any information in this case. a partial re-election begins in pennsylvania. >> pamela osborne explains how this plays into the larger
recount effort. >> it begins today in philadelphia. that's all it is. election officials will not inspect election software for malware that could have manipulated votes as the green party had requested. at 1:00 this afternoon the recounts and voting results from 75 machines across 1700 wards in philly will take place at the voting machine warehouse on wissahickon avenue. why thesetic wards? voters in each of the wards in question actually petitioned for the recounts. this is an effort, as you know, from green party candidate jill stein. she's pushed the recounts in michigan and wisconsin as well. we know president-elect trump has been against recount efforts. his attorneys have even filed paperwork in an effort to stop the recount in michigan. that recount was set to start today in michigan. wisconsin's recount is already under way. here in pa, trump defeated hillary clinton by 68,000 votes. clinton, however, defeated trump by a margin of nearly 455,000
votes in philadelphia. a court hearing on the statewide recounts is set for monday. in the digital operation center, pamela osborne, "nbc10 news." 6:35 right now, 40 degrees outside. high schools in ocean county have a new tool to help drug overdoses. nurses are armed with narcan nasal spray kits. the spray can reverse overdoses from heroine and other opioids. it's the first in the garden state. a pharmaceutical company provided the narcan spray for free. in suffolk county a project to replenish the shoreline in rehoboth beach is under way. pipes suck up sand and push it onto the beach. it's the equivalent of moving hundreds of dump truckloads of sands but doing it quicker and cheaper. >> we're very fortunate. this is the best quality of sand we've used and found in the last
15 years. >> there's no timetable yet for completing the project. 6:36. hard to even think about sand and the beach right now. >> we can. we can dream. but we have a big christmas tree lighting tonight. >> we do. it's going to be fun. bill and jessica are both going to be there. let's check in with bill and see what the weather looks like today and tonight. >> it will be great weather. starting off with clear skies. look at this live view from center city from the loews hotel. sunshine will be bright at 7:05 this morning. the temperatures at this hour still coming down. we're at 40 in philadelphia. it's going to be a slow warm-up with bright sunshine to near 50 degrees at lunchtime. 9-mile-an-hour wind as the temperature climbs. we go through the day, that wind will also be increasing 14 miles an hour this afternoon. a few scattered clouds in the suburbs, 37 degrees right now. mostly sunny skies. you'll see that same wind blowing this afternoon. 47 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon. it will get chilly this evening. chilly in the lehigh valley, 35 right now.

may be a problem. >> let's find out exactly where. jessica boyington. belmont? >> yeah, around belmont on the eastbound side of the schuylkill, too, which stinks a little bit because that's what traffic is moving into center city. that's where we typically see -- it's not blocking any lanes to the highway. it's just on the ramp right here so that traffic off belmont avenue might be a little backed up when moving by here. clearly police activity on the scene. you can see they have a sign pushing traffic to the left-hand side. the ramp isn't closed. eastbound from the blue route to vine street expressway is a 25-minute trip and average speeds into the 30s. an accident reported in hatboro in jacksonville road and county road. and route 42 at creek road, the north bound side. this is the traffic moving towards philadelphia. no major delays there right now, but definitely we'll keep our

it won't get here during the weekend. we will stay dry. sunday morning at 7:00 a little colder with clear skies with sunshine to start with on sunday. there will be clouds coming in later today. that storm will wait until next week. no worry about any showers in the area. for the christmas tree lighting this evening, 46 at 5:00, 44 at 7:00 and 42 by 9:00. for the weekend, the wind will be blowing on saturday. 40s and low 50s. the wind dies down and the temperatures will be chillier on sunday but with less wind may feel warmer sunday afternoon. ten-day on 10 -- breezy today and tomorrow. colder tomorrow morning and even chillier on sunday morning with those clear skies to start with. clouds late sunday into monday. then that wet weather from the storm coming together near texas will arrive during date on tuesday. after we start to warm up, 46 degrees tuesday. the showers are out of here for wednesday but mostly cloudy day

eastbound from the blue route to vine, 20 minutes, speeds into the 30s. you can see police activity on the scene trying to tow this vehicle -- at least get it out of the way, clean up the scene. you can see it might be tricky for traffic and cars moving off belmont avenue and having to merge with the schuylkill expressway right now. might be a little tricky spot. be careful heading out there. on plymouth an accident on jefferson and another accident on dekalb and schoolhouse lane. we'll check in with 95, south haven road to south vine expressway. 26 minutes is a normal drive time especially for friday early morning commute. average speeds into the 30s there. vai, back to you. >> thank you. wells fargo center is open again for business. a concert starring five finger death punch went off without a hitch last night one night after the sixers game was postponed for condensation with the court. take a look at crews trying to

to break news. a fire steroid eight row homes in allentown. the red cross is helping 23 people who lost everything in the fire. the fast-moving blaze on fulton street started at 8:00 last night and wasn't under control until after midnight. everyone on the block made it out okay. people in san bernardino, california, will gather tonight to mark the one-year anniversary of the deadly terror shootings in that city. >> one year ago today a married couple open fire at a holiday party. the couple was killed in the shootout with police.
today's anniversary will marked with a number of events starting with a memorial bike ride this morning and ending with a community gathering tonight. happening today, philadelphia officials will start recounting the election results in dozens of precincts in the city. the green party is still pushing for a statewide recount in pennsylvania. a hearing on the statewide issue is scheduled for monday. also today election officials in michigan will consider a request by president-elect trump to block a hand recount in that state. you're looking at the recount in wisconsin. that began yesterday. the green party is backing the recount efforts. mr. trump beat hillary clinton by more than 10,000 votes in michigan. meanwhile, the newest and largest waw wachlt in center city will officially open today. a ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for later today at 19th and market. customers can get free coffee there all day, any size. today is also the last date of the campout for hunger at xfinity live. we'll be there this morning. last year they got us to take
