right now on "nbc 10 news today" holiday rush. philadelphia international airport, here's a live look as thousands of travellers get ready to leave for the holidays. we're following breaking news out of montgomery county this morning. that's where one person is dead after flames tore through this apartment building in pottstown. giant killers under the primetime lights right here on nbc 10. the eagles play spoiler against their long time division rival. 6:00 a.m. this friday morning. 32 degrees outside. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today". i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm katy zachary. thanks for joining us. let's get to meteorologist bill henley. he has the neighborhood forecast. very important especially for this weekend.

>> today a pretty nice day. we're starting off dry and mostly clear skies. nowhere near as cold as it normally is. usually see these numbers in the 20s. right now it's 36 degrees in philadelphia. there's a little bit of a breeze now out of the west at 12 miles per hour. that will be enough to make it feel chillier start with. look at these afternoon temperatures. 47 in new jersey. for the suburbs degrees along with the lehigh valley and near 50 this afternoon for philadelphia. while delaware is dry, today 47 degrees. dry today but rain is on the way for tomorrow. i'll go through forecast hour by hour when i'm back in ten minutes. first let's check in on the first alert traffic with francesca ruscio. >> we have some updates for you folks in terms of mass transit. train 1295 will be running 30 minutes late because of earlier equipment problems. everything else is running on time and schedule. so, again that's train 1295. we have a water main break on the southbound side of columbus

boulevard blocking portions of 95 and washington avenue. it's closed. expect delays and just try to avoid that area of columbus boulevard. i got a tweet what about the majors in new jersey. 295 and new jersey turnpike and 42 you won run into any problems or delays for the southbound 42 freeway so, again, those are your majors over in new jersey. when i come back we'll look at a disabled vehicle causing problems on 95 and 295. one person is dead and more than a dozen people are displaced after an apartment building fire in pottstown. nbc 10's matt delucia is live for us at the scene this morning with more on what happened. what are you learning, matt, since we latinos saw you? >> reporter: right. so close to christmas too having this happen is a tragic morning here pottstown. been talking with some residents that describe escaping this fire. twin last 30 minutes we saw the coroner show up at the scene. building behind that fire truck this is where it happened just

after 1:15 this morning. not a whole lot of damage to the exterior, a lot of damage on the inside second and third floor. firefighters saw heavy fire coming from the second floor of this building when the call came in. there was a report initially of someone being trapped inside. he was found dead. residents told me the victim is a man. others in the building did evacuate safely i spoke with one of them a little bit earlier this morning and here's his account of what happened. >> opened the window. it was. like smelled a whole bunch of smoke. bunch of flashing lights. my girlfriend went into our bathroom and everything just started coming up in smoke. it was crazy. got the little ones out. rushed out of there as fast as possible. >> the red cross is helping carlos, his family and other residents. i got an update.

they are helping six families, a total of 17 people so far. people who were in this building at the time here. now the investigation begins to find out exactly what started this deadly fire here earlier this morning. live in pottstown, montgomery county, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. we're following breaking news from overseas this morning. anis amri man suspected in the berlin christmas attack is dead. we have new video from milan where italy's interior ministry says amri was killed in a shoot out with police. officers stopped him during a routine patrol. international manhunt for amri has been under way since monday night when he allegedly crashed a truck into the market killing 12 people. we're monitoring the developments from italy and germany. we'll bring you updates as on as we get them. 6:04. philadelphia international airport is already packed with

holiday travellers. if you have a flight later today, expect long lines. our photographer at the airport tells us the lines are moving pretty quickly. so that's good news. people are coming in first there. the airport suggests you should to the airport two hours before your scheduled departure time. that should give you enough time to find parking in those packed lots and get through those security lines. starting late next month if you live in pennsylvania, flying will be a little more complicated. beginning january 30th, showing a pennsylvania driver's license or state issued i.d. will not be enough to get you on a commercial flight or allow you into a federal building that's because the licenses don't meet federal requirements. department of homeland security this week reportedly denied the state's latest request for more time to comply with federal laws. a camden neighborhood is turning to prayer to help deal with a pair of deadly shootings this week.

loved ones released balloons at a vigil last night for sean johnson shot and killed on tuesday. that killing came a day before a woman died of a gunshot wound to the head. police are investigating both cases. an abington mother is a person of interest in the death of her teenage daughter. hunters found grace parker's body dismembered. her more reported her missing. park certificate in jail facing child endangerment charges. prosecutors say she's a person ever interest in the killing and that she misled detectives. a man is accused of fondling a female passenger while she slept during a flight from india to newark and then writing notes the victim apologizing for a moment of stupidity. the incident happened on wednesday. the man was charged on wednesday with abusive sexual contact. he was released on bond. we have new details on the

princeton university men's swim and diving team. the school cancelled the season after vulgar post were found on the team's electronic mailing list. the university made the announcement yesterday afternoon. week we told you the team was suspended after pool officials discovered racist comments made by team members. some of those comments involve the women's swimming and diving team. he put it up for grabs. >> the eagles turn into giant destroyers. this interception sealed the birds victory at the link here on nbc 10 last night. the eagles wen end a five game losing streak. >> the birds never trailed last night. they built a lead on big plays like this from jenkins.

are sturnned by a tweet president-elect trump. yesterday trump tweeted the united states must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes. it's something no president has called for in decades. president of a global security association is worried that tweet could an arms race. yesterday vladimir putin told his generals they need to enhance the combat capability of their nuclear force. putin did not give a reason for the decision. a trump spokesperson later said the tweet referred to improving nuclear deterrence. president-elect also took to twitter to talk about his upcoming inauguration. he tweeted quote the so-called a-list celebrities are all wanting pics of the inauguration. look what they did for hillary. nothing. i want the people. here's what we know about the performances.

radio city rockettes and mormon choir will be performing. mr. trump will be sworn in on january 20th and nbc 10 will be there. speaking of the trumps there were some tense moments aboard a jetblue flight for ivanka trump. >> she was flying with her family when a fellow passenger confronted her before he was ultimately kicked off the plane. she was traveling with her three children and husband. family was heading to hawaii for acceleration. a fellow passenger was overheard saying they ruined the country now they ruin our flight. the passenger, daniel goldstein and his husband were kicked off the plane. >> visibly shaken. if i was security i wouldn't take a chance eat per. >> the tried to downplay the incident. saying my husband expressed displeasure in a calm tone. jetblue staff overheard and kicked us off a plane.

jetblue ining the decision to remove a customer from a flight is not taken lightly. if the crew determines a customer is causing conflict on the aircraft the customer will be asked to deplane. it is:18 on your friday, and first alert traffic reporter francesca ruscio is filling in for jessica this morning. >> following an accidents on i-95 northbound. we are seeing an accident on 95 specifically. i marked it right over here with this graphic. left lane is blocked. traffic is crawling to get by. we're seeing residual delays. again it's not completely and entirely blocking that entire section of 95. lansdale an accidents on east line and east 5th street. watch for equipment problems on 1295 for the newark line. running 30 minutes late. when i come back we'll look at the rest of the majors as well

also going bring in warmer air. first clouds will start to move in late this afternoon. they take over this evening. so wet weather for tomorrow but dry today, 48 degrees this afternoon. drop down to 36 tomorrow morning. won't be freezing. the rain moves in. it will only be rain for our area. the rain continues. drying out by evening for hanukkah and christmas eve. christmas day sunshine and near 50 degrees after a somewhat cooler morning down to 34. clouds return on monday but temperatures start climbing monday afternoon, 54 degrees. some rain showers tuesday morning and 55 degrees the high temperature on tuesday. dry wednesday but another round of rain is likely with a cold front on thursday. clears out and cools down for friday, saturday and into sunday. a delaware county man is back home safe and sound today. >> he took a quick trip what he thought would be a quick trip to the store and accidentally ended up in alabama.

89-year-old man was trying to stop by a neighborhood store for some electrical supplies on saturday. the world war ii veteran made a detour to alabama. on monday he approached police officers at a restaurant and asked them where he was. >> man said i drove 900 miles. i don't remember it. >> officers ran his driver's license and realized he had been reported missing two days prior. police contacted his family. they flew down to alabama to pick him up. his daughter said he's never been diagnosed with dementia. she attributes his trip to old age and forgetfulness. >> i bet they are so happy. if you recently bought a lottery ticket in lehigh valley find it. we'll tell you about the winning ticket sold in allentown. eagles fans are known for their passion but wait until you hear what hundreds of packers fans did to make sure their

we have breaking news from overseas. official in malta which is located in the mediterranean sea say a libyan plane land with two hijackers aboard. malta airport officials say emergency teams are handling what they called unlawful interference on the tarmac. ma at that's prime minister tweeted about a potential hijack situation involving an internal libyan flight that was diverted to malta. airport officials said the airline has 118 passengers on board that plane. tap the nbc app and stay with us for updates there. lots of people are heading home or maybe on vacation for the holidays. we have a live look inside

philadelphia. but the breeze is blowing. it's 12 miles per hour. that will make it feel chillier to start with and bring the temperatures down a little bit by 8:00. then in the 40s at 11:00. getting close to the 50 degree mark this in philadelphia. 40s for the suburbs and lehigh valley and new jersey inland and at the shore degrees this afternoon. delaware will be dry today. that changes for the entire area tomorrow. got some wet weather on the way heading in to the holiday weekend. we'll go through that hour by hour when i come back in ten minutes. first, time for your first alert traffic with francesca ruscio. >> we're watching a major back up on 95 northbound approaching that accident scene at cottman avenue. let's look at these travel speeds. we're crawling right now. avoid 95 northbound for quite some time, approaching this accident, blocking the left lane. it hasn't cleared yet. we're starting to see delays piling in. we'll be watching this accident along as it hasn't cleared.

the water main break, again, blocking and closing area of 95 along the columbus boulevard between 95 and washington avenue. still is in play and hasn't cleared. but we'll be watching it for the next several hours. new jersey, 295, new jersey turnpike as well as the 42 freeway headed northbound for the philadelphia area you won't run into any issues. we have that accident on 95, schuylkill looks pretty good. when i come back we'll look at the vine street expressway and have those updates on that accident. back to you. 6:33. 36 degrees. we're following breaking news out of montgomery county this morning. a person is dead after a fire in an apartment building in pottstown. >> nbc 10's matt delucia is live for us at the scene this morning. walk us through what happened. >> reporter: right. crews are still here at the scene right now. right behind me you can see fire trucks are still here. through that window on the second floor you can see a firefighter up there inside the apartment building there.

a lot of that damage is on the second and third floor. not a lot of damage on the exterior of the building. we're on east high by north franklin street. here's individual wrote frefrl. this fire started around 1:15. firefighters showed up. heavy fire on the second floor extending up to the third floor. when the call came in there was a report of somebody trapped inside. an adult was found dead inside one of the rooms on the second floor. residents tell me the victim is a man. the others who were inside this building at the time did evacuate safely. i spoke with one of them early this morning. listen to his account of what happened. >> opened the window because it was hot and just smelled a whole bunch of smoke. seen a bunch of flashing lights. and then my girlfriend she went into our bathroom and everything just started coming up in smoke. got the little ones out as fast

as possible. >> red cross was out here earlier helping carlos and his family and the other residents. they are helping six families, a total of 17 people at this hour. several apartments in this building were damaged but now the investigation begins. fire marshals out here at the scene. as soon as we find out more information about this deadly fire we'll pass it along. i'm in pottstown, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. we're following breaking news overseas. the manhunt for the suspect in the berlin christmas market attack is now over. italian officials say anis amri was killed in a shootout with police in milan this morning. the officer stopped him during routine check. he pulled out a gun when officers asked him for i.d.. one officer was also hurt but expected to recover. the hunt began forry moan night after he crashed a truck into the market killing 12 people. new this morning two men are on the run after a bloody home invasion and police say it

sounds like it the only home they were trying hit. police us before midnight two men knocked on the front door of a kensington apartment. forced their way in after a woman there opened the. the men fwougt her then shot her. they left without taking anything but investigators say before barriare barging inher h two men knocked on a neighbor's door asking for somebody by name. that neighbor closed and locked his door. a man was shot in the head last night and this morning police are looking the person who did it. they were still searching for evidence on hatfield street. a witness tells us she heard gunfire and saw a young man lying in the street bleeding. he's listed in serious condition this morning. he put it up for grabs. intercepted. >> not this time, eli. brooks intercepted eli manning to steal the victory from the

trooper. she's been battling all week and been here every day. >> you sound great. >> thanks guys >> we'll see you at 7:00. in delaware county police are plugging some drivers for a holiday surprise. during traffic stops the drivers got turkeys instead of tickets. yesterday 100 drivers in chester were pulled over for obeying the law. police officers there surprised each one with a free turkey for the holidays. city, police administrators want to show their appreciation to those in the community. >> good day. it's a good day for the relationship between the police and the community. excellent day. >> chester mayor was also there to help give away those turkeys. well, the green bay packers will take on the minnesota vikings on christmas eve and fans at lambeau field clearing out the snow. some fans waited in line for

three hours for opportunity to shovel snow from the legendary field. their reward, $10 an hour. might be called back because snow in the forecast for green bay today and tomorrow. not for us, though. we'll get that storm just not. right now what we're seeing clear skies. little bit of a breeze blowing. but the wind is pretty light and great day for skiing in camelback. they've been making snow lately. haven't made it this morning. temperatures are running warmer. 6 mile-per-hour wind in philadelphia with temperatures in the 30s above freezing. this is warmer than normal to start with. even on the mild side in the pocono mountains just shy of 30 degrees. plenty of sunshine. if you're getting out of town doing your last minute shopping or heading to the slopes no problem. lots of sunshine. tomorrow, there's the storm that's is going return snow to green bay and much of the midwest and that storm is coming our way. but won't be snow. it's also this storm going to bring in warm air.

so this first line of showers, that's the warm air pushing in to the area and we'll see those rain drops falling early saturday morning. they swing out, the temperatures are climbing, any snow will be limited to the pocono mountains limited to lehigh valley and rain takes over as the region warms up. at 10:00 in the morning rain coming down. move out by afternoon. by evening we'll dry out. that clears the way for a dry beginning hanukkah and christmas eve. today dry all day. got some sunshine. up to 48 degrees. temperatures climb after the rain ends in the afternoon and even warmer on sunday with brilliant sunshine for christmas day. real warm up happens on monday even though clouds are coming in. monday will be dry. chance for some tuesday morning and then drying out in the afternoon. rain on thursday. that's a cold front that returns the cold to our area next week. all right, bill, thanks for that. few minutes before 7:00 a.m. let's check the roads.

a lot of people heading out. >> very busy morning on the majors. we're taking a quick look at the blue route. our camera at baltimore pike heading southbound for 95 fierpt. no problems or delays northbound for the boulevard. we're seeing flower travel speeds 50s and 60s for the blue route we're doing okay. remember the earlier accident this is what we're seeing. very red. 12 miles per hour is where we are seeing these residual delays approaching the accidents scene taking out the left lane on 95 northbound. right around cottman avenue. we're seeing a delay but your delay backed up surpassing academy road. from academy road to cottman on the northbound side not looking that great. what we're seeing southbound we're doing okay southbound especially travel speeds are in the 50s and 60s. woodhaven to vine. no issues southbound but northbound may run into some delays.
