right now, the clock is ticking. just hours left to wrap up holiday shopping. we are tracking the rush. the travel rush is on, families reunite at the airport. our holiday weekend off to a soggy start. this is center city. good morning. i am rosemary connors. it is 6:00 this saturday. thanks for being with us. we have a mild holiday in store. let's get more from meteorologist krystal klei with the first alert neighborhood forecast. >> if we have to see rain on the holiday weekend, we have santa to worry about and have your christmas day forecast. right now, we have showers we're

tracking. looking at the rain through much of the regn.rted a couple of ho ago, starting to creep into play. now it is across the entire viewing zone. and notice it is pretty much all rain. north of the area is where we see changeover to some snow falling. north to the poconos and further north, you may run into icy spots. but showers for us. we zoom into place in chester county, berks, montgomery county, and it is steady rain. earlier was heavy rain, since then, that started to move off. philadelphia getting showers and new jersey and delaware. no one is missing out on this rain. we are seeing heavier showers in cape may county as we speak. right now, here's a look at temperatures. this is why we are talking rain instead of snow. we are all above freezing. allentown at 37. philadelphia at 39, atlantic city at 44 degrees. trenton at 38. i don't expect any type of

frozen precipitation. it is all rain. the ground is also pretty warm out there. 10, 15 minutes ago, showing a camera with snow falling. if you head further north, you could run into issues if driving today. overall, it is about the rain and when it moves out for the start of hanukkah or christmas eve. we will get to the details with planners and timing everything out in a bit. >> see you shortly. here's breaking news in bucks county. 15 people are hurt after a van crashed on i-95. randy gyllenhaal is at the scene with the latest. >> reporter: this accident happened before the rain started falling, it doesn't appear weather was a factor, but it was serious enough to shut southbound lanes of 95. zoom in, show you a large passenger van being taken away by tow trucks. state police tell us the

passenger van veered off 95 into the woods, at least 15 people were transported to local hospitals. authorities were working to free the passengers trapped in debris of the crash. right now, police say there are no fatalities, but some of the 15 passengers suffered serious injuries. all lanes of 95 were closed as crews work to free everybody. back here live, you can see they're beginning to open 95 again as they work to clear that van. police say it is too early to know who the passengers are or where they were going on this christmas eve. but we should know more about whether or not 95 southbound just before woodhaven road, that should be open in the next hour or so as police continue to clear the crash from the scene. live in bensalem, rand rand, nbc10 news. >> we will check back shortly. tonight is christmas eve and beginning of hanukkah which means shoppers spend today looking for last minute gifts. this is what it looked like at

malls all over the area. people shoulder to shoulder. we will likely see more of that today. nbc10 was at the cherry hill mall where some shoppers tried their best to get in and out quickly. others are taking it in like this family that decided to dress up on the hunt for last minute deals. streets are crowded, mall is crowded, stores nuts. you have to be here for the season. then there were shoppers waiting patiently for shoppers. talked to several husbands and others waiting at stores. >> that's why i am out here. party before christmas, oh my god. >> all these things on the list or is she going off the radar?

starting off with a live look at cape may. looking at the snow in the poconos. and tracking wet conditions through the first half of the day. we're looking at rain. it is going to be considerable for half the day. isn't just a quick in and out shot. you can tell it is covering the entire region and all locations are reporting rain making it to the ground. we are looking at most of us reporting rain. just had a viewer report in bucks county with sleet mixed in. most conditions are rain.

most locations temperatures are too warm, well above freezing to see any frozen precipitation at this point. here's the christmas eve forecast. going through today, we dry out noon to 1:00 p.m. temperatures peak around 50 degrees in philadelphia. 40s for the suburbs and lehigh valley. as we go into your evening, there's the temperatures we expect. 6:00, getting the kids ready for bed, 46 degrees. 42 in lehigh valley and jersey shore at 46 degrees. notice no rain in the forecast. we totally clear out by 11:00. tracking temperatures continuing to slip down, starting to get chilly. 41 in philadelphia. 36 in lehigh valley. and delaware 41 degrees by 11:00 p.m. these are the temperature trends. yesterday we had a temperature of 46, warmer than the 42 degree average for this point in december. today, tomorrow talking 50 degrees. not bad. mild conditions. we boost up to the mid-50s going into the next work week.

they started to receive reports about a strange odor in center city and south philly. here at nbc10, the newsroom got numerous calls. authorities detected no gas leak, they're continuing to investigate. authorities are investigating the shooting of a ups driver. while he was making deliveries before the holiday. >> reporter: a 13 year veteran getting packages to your doorstep, especially in the holiday gift crunch time made a delivery at the rite-aid before pulling onto highland avenue. >> crazy stuff goes on around here. >> reporter: we are told the driver stopped to let a man cross the street and heard a bang, thinking it was just the

truck, kept driving taking time to see his shoulder was hit. >> you can see the bullet in the jacket. >> reporter: he pulled in where they get service and emt was there to help. >> i hope he can return home with his family on christmas. >> reporter: the driver will be okay, but for neighbors another reminder how dangerous this area is. >> out here bringing packages to us and make sure our stuff get here, somebody just shoot him. doesn't make no sense. >> reporter: we saw another worker moving supplies, escorted by armed security. police haven't found the shooter, aren't sure what the motive was, but other drivers are worried about working here. >> i have to watch my back 24/7 could be me next. i could be the next one shot. >> reporter: while doctors took care of the driver here, ups got another crew to get the packages and deliver them to families in

the area. drew smith, nbc10 news. now to the latest on actress carrie fisher's heart attack. her brother says she's in intensive care at a los angeles hospital. she suffered the attack on a flight from london to l.a. she's 60 years old, best known for her role in "star wars" movies. her parents are debbie reynolds and the late singer eddie fisher. new details on the christmas attack in germany. a police officer that was wounded in the shootout will be released from the hospital in the next few days. he and another officer noticed the suspect acting suspiciously when they approached him at a deserted train station yesterday morning. as routine protocol, they asked for id. that's when they realized who it was. he shot the officer and they shot back killing him. he plowed into the market monday killing 12 and injuring dozens of others.

isis claimed responsibility for the attack. in the u.s., federal officials worried about a call from sympathizers to attack churches and other gathering sites. this is outside saint patrick's cathedral yesterday. it came after a militant site posted a list of churches to target. the fbi is advising everyone to be aware of surroundings and report suspicious activity. the u.n. secretary general says resolution to condemn israeli settlements the u.s. didn't agree with keeps alive a two state solution with the palestinians. yesterday the u.s. abstained from voting, demanding israel stop building settlements on occupied palestinian territory. marked a rare instance of america not coming to israel's defense. they wanted the u.s. to veto the resolution. mr. trump tweeted things will be different with the u.n. after his inauguration. speaking of the president-elect, he is raising

nuclear concerns after an off camera comment let it be an arms race. yesterday he insisted the u.s. will surpass its rivals, outlast them all in a push for global weapons dominance. made the remarks one day after calling for expansion of america's nuclear capabilities on twitter. putin boasted about the strength of his nation's nuclear arsenal. the rockettes are set to perform at the inauguration, but not all are reacting with glee. one posted after finding out the news, fellow performers went on stage with tears in our eyes and heavy hearts. >> because of things that have been said that we would be sending a message. >> a lot of women are worried because of things that have been

said from him -- >> the company that employs them says the appearance is voluntary. they added they had more that wanted to perform than spots available. starting with philadelphia. a live camera shot. can't tell easily, if you look closely, rain drops on the camera. rain is coming down as we start early morning hours. once the sun is up, we will be able to tell. there are slick roadways as a result. not icy, that's good news. most of us across the region are tracking rain instead of snow or ice conditions. what we are looking at is wide view of satellite and radar. this is pumping in from the

southwest. it isn't going to be a brief hour long rains move through, it will be about the first half of the day. getting into early afternoon, that's when rain should move out entirely. take a closer look in the southern point of the viewing area. cape may county and delaware bay, through delaware and south jersey. no one is escaping the rain. we are seeing spots of light rain moving into delaware. overall, there are showers to track across the board. looking now at pemberton, shore point, the rain continues. trenton, mercer county, into philadelphia. we look at philadelphia, afghanistwe are seeing steady light to deeper green. pockets of dark green are where we see more heavy downpour, but not that yellow, orange, red that indicates thunderstorms. this is not a big issue we're looking at. it is going to lead to wet roadways. still seeing rain in berks county and lehigh valley. you might see a brief mix of

sleeting conditions. for the most part, temperatures are too warm. we track north from the poconos, we see more rain snow changeover. hour by hour forecast is showing what we have been dealing with. as we go through the morning, it continues. 7:00 to 8:00 in the morning, 8 in the morning to lunchtime. by lunchtime we pull showers out of the north and west and from philadelphia. still rain in parts of new jersey and delaware. going into the later part of the day, now it is offshore. afternoon dries out. clouds start to clear moving through the afternoon. christmas day we're looking at dry conditions out there. here's the forecast. 6:00 a.m., 35 degrees. we get to upper 30s and clear by 10:00 a.m. i suspect as we get into the afternoon, mid 40s to around 50 degrees for parts of philadelphia. in the suburbs, should get into the 40s as well. notice upper 30s by 10:00 a.m., but a cold start for the early

risers. 32 degrees in the suburbs. 29 in the lehigh valley. we're going to have a cold start, but clear conditions christmas day in delaware and new jersey. a quick update and breaking news we are following out of bensalem, bucks county. that crash along i-95 that shut down lanes in bucks county just reopened. this follows a van that went off the road. 15 people are now in the hospital because of this crash. nbc10's randy gyllenhaal is live near the scene. this is near woodhaven road exit. we're getting an update from randy at 6:30. all the shopping could leave a mark on your credit score. it can raise utilization and cause short term damage to the score. if you pay on time and bring that utilization down, you can help your score recover over time. experts advise keeping credit use to no more than 30% of your total limit. santa and reindeer began a

this morning, we are following the frenzy. hanukkah begins at sunset. we preview the festival of lights, take you to a local celebration in moments. plus a crash in philadelphia leaves cars stacked on top of each other. we'll explain how this all happened. good morning. this is nbc10 news today. i am rosemary connors. thanks for being with us. it is 6:30 on this saturday. let me talk about this morning. let's begin with the holiday forecast. meteorologist krystal klei has first alert neighborhood weather. >> we begin with what we are currently dealing with, which is rain. not dealing with this all weekend long, that's the good news. currently you're seeing showers, especially for last minute shoppers who may be getting ready to head out the door. wet roadways no matter where you head. it is a consistent rain as well. meaning it spread across the board. not pockets of breaks we are looking at. and it is light to moderate rain. no downpours out there at this

point. we saw heavier rain in chester county earlier, that since died down. this will continue through the morning, seeing rain in chester county has heavier showers, now it is more moderate rain. going through philadelphia and new jersey, it is a lighter rain on shore points. cape may county and into delaware, it is more steady again. this is in and out rain but consistent across the area. and we are not looking at icing conditions because of the temperatures on the warmer side. most of us already in the mid to upper 30s, some of us holding on to the 40s. here's the temperature trend going through today in philadelphia. going from lower 40s to mid to upper 40s in the afternoon. some spots of philadelphia should make it up to 50 degrees, meaning a warmer than average forecast for christmas eve and start of hanukkah. then goes into the evening, temperature starts to slip back down. lower 40s by 9:00 p.m. as we go overnight into christmas morning, talking 30s on the board. coming up, we track

temperatures. do it neighborhood by neighborhood both for today and tomorrow. right now we are following breaking news out of bucks county. a van crashed along i-95 in bensalem. as we are just beginning the holiday weekend, 15 people are now in the hospital. randy gyllenhaal is live at the scene to fill us in on the latest. >> reporter: 95 southbound reopened in the past 20 minutes or so. this is just before the woodhaven road exit in bensalem, bucks county. i will show you cars are now moving. not much traffic. two hours a happened, a large passenger van veering off 95 into the woods. according to state police, at least 15 people were transported to local hospitals in that van. authorities say they had to work hard to free some of the passengers that were trapped in debris of the crash. right now police say there are no fatalities, some of the 15 passengers suffered serious

injuries. all the lanes of 95 southbound were closed, now just back opened. too early to know where these passengers were headed this christmas eve and who they are. we are working to figure out those details. 95 southbound now reopened. traffic moving after the near deadly accident. live along 95, randy gyllenhaal, nbc10 news. new from overnight. two men in the hospital following this pile up in philadelphia. nbc10 was on the scene on emerald street in kensington where a truck ended up on top of the cars at 2:30 this morning. working to find out more about the victims' conditions and details about the pile is the l squeeze in christmas and hanukkah shopping. today is christmas eve and the start of hanukkah. that means plenty of people will be hitting stores to pick up last minute gifts. shoppers will also pack the malls. this is the view from sky force

10 yesterday. you can see the parking lot at cherry hill mall jammed. it will probably be a similar scene today. very busy at king of prussia in montgomery county. mall executives say they're seeing strong holiday sales but not releasing numbers publicly. we spoke to several shoppers who are certainly adding to the numbers. some still had a lot to do, others needed one or two things. >> getting down, now i have to buy everything at the last minute. >> i work well under pressure, hopefully that helps me out. >> if you still need time to do that shopping, top toy sales are out. popular gifts for girls, barbie, shop kins. for boys, legos and "star wars." hatchimal are everybody's favorite but you probably won't find one this late in the game. salvation army and wells fargo treated 150 families to a party at xfinity live yesterday complete with santa claus,

track. white christmas is not that common in philadelphia, only af. 15 out of the past 60 years. not that common. here's the radar and satellite. we see green on the board. that means rain across the map. it is pretty much the entire area looking at rain. just that northernmost edge going to the poconos may see a mix out there. elsewhere we're tracking showers that will continue through the first half of your day. second half of the day we start to clear out clouds, we clear out entirely by tonight. here are temperatures by this afternoon. warmer than average. 47 degrees in summerton, 46 in doylestown. center city, 50 degrees. out by the second half of the day. new jersey, trenton at 47. voorhees in the low 50s. same for atlantic city, 53 degrees.

just about quarter to 7:00 now on this saturday. here's a live look at philly international airport. you can see things, look like they're moving smoothly on the runway. i checked with philly international twitter page. they say because of rain you may want to check with your airline before you head out the door in case there are delays. at this point doesn't appear to be that way. we know the airport is going to be busy today with people heading home and coming into town for the holidays. minnesota vikings safe and sound after their team plane slid off a snowy runway. this incident happened at an airport near green bay, wisconsin. the jet ended up stuck in the grass. players and coaches waited hours to get off the plane. fortunately, nobody was hurt. the team tweeted they're all at the hotel snug in their beds.

they play later today. it will be a special christmas for a mother in delaware. she officially adopted a four-year-old girl yesterday. and it wasn't the typical adoption ceremony. the force was with little zoe who loves "star wars." j.r. smith has the sights and sounds from the courtroom in wilmington. >> i got to a point in my life where i really wanted to be a parent and i realized to me it was more important to parent somebody who needed it, needed a soft place to land, someone to care for them. >> we have many children of all ages in delaware who aren't able to be with their biological family, it is so great when you find a family like we found today. >> you get this little person in your life, all of a sudden you're responsible for them, get to know them. she's just irreplaceable now. when we got to the point adoption was getting ready, i asked her if you could have anybody at the hearing, who would you want. she said darth vader. that's her favorite character. i wanted this to be everything she ever wanted.

up the coast and shore points. looking at light rain on shore points, deeper green indicates more steady rain. nothing is a heavy flooding rain. philadelphia and into the suburbs, same deal. little deeper green moving farther north, indicates more nearing heavy rain. not seeing yellow, orange, red, that would indicate heavy downpours or thunderstorms. not seeing that this morning. not a dangerous situation, not going to ground flights, but it is wet. drive slowly. if you have flight plans, check the website for details if there are any delays. then looking to the lehigh valley and berks county, rain as well that we are tracking. you see purple and pink. that's mostly north of the viewing area. that's because temperatures are cold enough to switch over from rain to snow. the temperatures are not cold enough in the pennsylvania suburbs. temperatures at 36 degrees,

treats. the bakery has been taking orders for the popular tomato pies, cannolis and cookie trace for weeks. i had that tomato pie, it is fantastic. today is when bethlehem becomes christmas usa. hotel bet will hlehem is filled capacity. they spent weeks putting up dozens of christmas trees. despite a mild christmas with no snow, they'll have no trouble getting into the holiday spirit. >> usually a little snow. but it is vibrant, the whole town pulls together for christmas. it is our time of year. >> we were up there and did checking with business owners on main street that say they're doing fine with the final holiday rush of shoppers. the fact there isn't snow probably makes it easier to get around to do last minute
