because we didn't have that morning show yesterday so i can't complain. here's a look at your temperatures outside. we certainly had a cooldown. yesterday temperatures got up very nicely into the 40s around 50 in some spots. philadelphia officially hit 50 which was our forecast temperature. already though we've dropped right back down. 20s over some areas. 28 reading, pottstown, 26 allento allentown. 36 in philadelphia, northeast philly 35. look at dover, up to 38 degrees this morning. notice, we've got the warmer air pressing in from the south. the temperatures are boosting up in those locations. looking at radar and satellite, this is a wider view here. it shows that we've got the clouds but there's just very light rain falling farther to the west. this is way ahead of the system. it's actually more located near the great lakes. that's going to bring us rain chances more from tonight into your tuesday. today just very isolated chances in some spots. in the lehigh valley, berks
county and the jersey shore. current wind speeds, they're not strong. enough to make it feel cooler than it actually is. 8 miles in philadelphia, 10 in wilmington. lighter to the north and along the shore as well. 5 miles per hour only for atlantic city. watching the winds start to pick up on the ten day forecast. we'll talk more about the extended forecast coming up. right now a look at traffic with francesca ruscio. good morning. watching the schuylkill expressway. travel speeds doing okay in the 50s and 60s. camera at belmont ave. traveling westbound, it will take you 11 minutes. eastbound doing okay. travel problem free on the schuylkill. i looked at 95, problem free as well. a couple of notifications for mass transit. running on a special holiday schedule. that is in play on the 23rd. still in effect today for the 26th. accept at that, patco and new jersey transit head to your mass transit websites for further information.
amtrak, good to go over on the majors in new jersey. >> francesca, thank you. 5:32. going to be a busy travel day across our entire area. here's a live look outside at the philadelphia international airport. officials say give yourself plenty of extra time today to park, check in and get through security. for some at the airport yesterday morning, it was a last-minute rush home for the holiday. we were there as travelers rushed off to make their flights. fortunately, there were no major delays or problems reported. passengers told us it was an easy day to travel and they were ready to celebrate with family. aaa expected a record 103 million americans to travel for this holiday. however, most did choose to drive. happening today along with the airport, expect malls and shopping centers to also be packed. >> yeah, in addition to post christmas sales, many people returning back for exchanges. >> "nbc 10's" matt delucia live
outside the cherry hill mall. >> reporter: good morning. first came the shopping and now come the returns. the mall is closed but we expect the parking lot to fill up as people start bringing back those unwanted gifts. by one estimate, people will return one out of every ten gifts they receive this year. according to cnbc, as much as 30 to 40% of items bought online can be returned. that's good news. if you are about to make out on store credit, you got a gift card for the holidays, you can pick up some pretty good after christmas deals. clothing, electronics and video games are among some of the items marked down quite a bit. what happens to the things that you bring back? >> maybe they sell it like an open box store. best buy does that a lot. or in some cases it has to be sent to a liquidator or wholesaler. >> reporter: oftentimes you can get that item for a little bit cheaper. now here are some tips for returns. if you have something you really
don't want or something doesn't fit, take a look here. first, save the receipt. if you've been lucky enough to get a gift receipt with your gift, hold on to that. a lot of stores will require proof of purchase. second, keep the original packaging. some stores might charge you a restocking fee if the packaging is damaged or missing. third, don't return used items. i know some of us are guilty of that. some stores are lenient but a lot of stores will not take an item back if it's been used or worn unless it's defective. cherry hill mall here opens at 8:00. i might just see you here. now live in cherry hill, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." >> we'll see you later, matt. kwanzaa begins today. week long celebration of african-american heritage. the kwanzaa holiday is marking its 50th anniversary this year. each day it carries four principles. the first day's focus is on unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative
economics, purpose, creativity and faith. kwanzaa is capped off with a feast and gift giving. happening today, philadelphia's annual hanukkah parade will roll through the streets of center city. you're looking at video of last year's event. the parade begins at aikenville road at 4:00. it will end up at independence mall where the world's largest menorah is already lit. you can enjoy music, dancing and treats for the kids. and here's a holiday crossover of kindness. you're looking at some of the 1,000 christmas cookies baked by kindergarteners at the synagogue in northeast philadelphia. the members deliver the cookies to hospital workers who had to be on duty yesterday. the kids wrote thank you notes to go with those treats. general george washington is safely across the delaware river again thanks to his decades old christmas tradition. ♪ ♪ >> the reenactment of george
washington's christmas day river crossing in bucks county drew thousands of people yesterday. the participants were decked out in continental military uniforms. general washington's actual army crossed the delaware on christmas day 1776 to score a crucial victory in the battle. the brandy wine's siberian tiger is getting ready for a move. zhanna will be heading to the bronx zoo. she'll be considered an ideal candidate for breeding and will be matched with a male tiger. no word yet if she'll be replaced by another tiger. she's only one of 500 siberian tigers worldwide. it was some unexpected holiday cheer for a waitress in arizona who is expecting a baby. a customer was getting a takeout order and left a $900 tip. sarah clark was putting in as
many hours as she can with a baby on the way and her fiance, get this, is scheduled to have knee surgery. clark says the customer that she's seen before, pregnant woman, gave her that huge christmas gift. >> i couldn't have asked for anything more right now. it's going to help with bills, with rent, with, you know, being able to spend some more time with my baby. >> the soon-to-be mom will help buy a nice crib for her baby. and we're starting out here with the live look outside in parts of philadelphia. actually, this is right outside of philadelphia in bala cynwyd. it's a dark shot. you might be able to see the clouds starting to develop. today is going to be a cloudy forecast. looking at radar and satellite, the wider view shows nicely the thicker clouds moving in. that's what we're going to have today. cloud coverage. not a lot of rain yet though. here's what we're looking at,
lighter showers in western pennsylvania. those are tracking our direction and may clip the northern edge of our viewing zone. they're moving along pretty nicely here, but i think temps are going to boost up enough for the most part this will be a rain forecast in that area instead of a freezing rain forecast. nonetheless, these morning hours will have an isolated chance of seeing that near berks and the lehigh valley. in fact, there is an advisory in place for that along those areas. still, very light chances. nothing that's a major concern. looking at your planner for today, it's really all about the cloud coverage and temperatures. the 30s at 8:00 a.m. 40s as we go through the afternoon and we even see the upper 40s as we get later into the day. we should cap our own 50 degrees at philadelphia. the temps are going to keep climbing as we go later into the day and tonight. why? because of the warmer area of air starting to move in. a lot of times we start to see this, temperatures pick up and
we see that changeover. this time it looks like mostly rain tonight. in the suburbs, 40 degrees at your lunch hour and in the lehigh valley. we look through delaware, right around the upper 30s but mid 40s by noon. in new jersey to the shore, mostly cloudy. as we move later into the day, i think we'll see spotty showers picking up along the jersey shore. temperatures 39 degrees by 4:00 p.m. all right, krystal. thank you. time now is about 5:40. did it again on your monday morning. been a long, action packed weekend, right? >> it really has. let's switch over to francesca ruscio. she has a look at 95. >> pamela, katy, krystal has been talking about the pretty chilly temperatures. i have a layer of frost on my windshield. watching the schuylkill at 95 at girard avenue, travel speeds in

'80s when the british singer, songwriter and producer went solo smash hits kept coming. the 1987 album "faith" sold more than 20 million copies around the world. he was born to a greek immigrant father and british mother, the singer won wide praise for his tremendous vocal range. ♪ last christmas i gave you my heart ♪ >> reporter: but michael's risky behavior and brushes with the law kept him in the headlines. one brush led to him admitting he was gay. a bout of pneumonia left him nearly dead in 2011 but he pulled through. >> i've never left disappointed. >> reporter: according to statements sunday from his publicist and police, singer died at his home in southern england. a statement from the publicist saying it is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved
son, brother, and friend george passed away peacefully at home over the christmas period. family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. george michael, dead at the age of 53. with word of george michael's death, tributes from celebrities poured in social media. ellen degeneres wrote, i just heard about my friend george michael's death. he was such a brilliant talent. i'm so sad. duran duran, all of our love and sympathy to george michael's family. elton john posted this message, i am in deep shock. i have lost a beloved friend. the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. my heart goes out to his family, friends, and all of his fans. we have new details this morning on "star wars" actress carrie fisher who's recovering from a heart attack. fisher's mother, actress debby
reynolds, says her daughter is in stable condition in a hospital in los angeles. yesterday reynolds tweeted a thank you to the public for prayers. fisher's co-stars on "star wars" harrison ford and mark hammel expressed their best wishes for a full recovery. carrie fisher is 60 years old. on friday she became ill on a flight from london to l.a. with what her mother called a cardiac event. after the flight they rushed fisher to the hospital. 5:48 on this monday after the long holiday weekend and we were dealing with a mixed bag this weekend. >> we got out of all of the wet weather saturday. which was good because sunday -- >> very true. >> a lot of toys to use outside. conditions were great for sunday. forecast high of 50 yesterday. today we're kind of merging our saturday and sunday forecast. clouds already start to move back in and we are tracking rain. not likely much of it's going to
hit us today. better chances on tuesday. we have some isolated chances for our monday forecast. hopefully you get today off and you're staying home enjoying, unwrapping, doing any of that. if you are getting out this morning, we're looking at just some clouds out there. as we move through the day, mostly those spot chances will be on the edges meaning the jersey shore and lehigh valley. neighborhood temperatures in philadelphia. we are chilly still. a lot of us in the 30s outside. not below freezing though in the philadelphia area. 36 at the airport. 34 for westbound areas and center city sitting at 37 degrees. society hill, rag wood hospital, even up to the areas around the same, 36 degrees reporting currently outside. temperatures are chilly but mostly above freezing. that is, unless you track a little farther north. some of our pennsylvania suburbs and up to the lehigh valley berks county are still chilly this morning and below freezing. these are the areas that if we
do see very isolated showers pop up they could turn into freezing rain. giving you eight to 10:00 time frame. here we go with your temperatures. by 11:00 a.m., 34 degrees in allentown. we see that shift over to above freezing. everywhere else in the 40s. egg harbor, 40 degrees. trying to boost those temperatures up. then we get into your evening hours. now we're at 8:00. temperatures still on the warmer side because looking at a wedge of warmer air starting to move in. what does that sneen really, just the temperatures overnight are not going to fall like they typically would. even into your tuesday morning, check that out. 50s across the map. some of us into the mid 50s by tuesday at 8:00 a.m. here's a look at your weekend forecast. seeing some on/off chances of rain. we'll fast forward to the weekend. that's what you're focused on, right? tracking temperatures that are going to mostly be right around the upper 30s to low 40s.
mid to upper 40s by sunday. chances of rain moving in. but for new year's night if you're going to those fireworks celebrations, things will stay, it appears, on the dry side, at least at this point, but it will be cold as well. from the skies now to the road. if you're heading in to work this monday morning, we're going to help get you there. >> definitely. you should see far fewer cars on the roadway as you make your way out to maybe return some gifts that you got this weekend. 6:00 a.m. what a great story to put a smile on your face. christmas miracle happening now in texas. a little girl picuts up a very g fight to stay alive. >> she was born premature, less than 1 pound. this is little watson breeden. her family says she stopped gaining weight in the womb. that's because mom had a rare life threatening complication during her pregnancy. both the baby and her mom's lives were at risk so doctors decided on an early c-section. watson was just 25 weeks old and weighed only 11 ounces making her the smallest child ever born at this hospital. >> i don't think there's any experience in life that can prepare you for what you face when you have a child that is sick. >> watson is a miracle. she is a little miracle. i've never seen anything so small and so feisty. >> most babies this size have
