i'm your host, jimmy fallon. just a heads up before we start. if any of you call an uber anytime soon, you might want to make sure it's not a white ford bronco. i'm just saying. [ cheers and applause ] because -- >> steve: be careful. might be a lyft. >> jimmy: that's right. o.j. simpson was officially granted parole today and could be out of jail by october. when asked what he plans to do first, he said, "well, catch up on all the shows about o.j." [ laughter ] "i heard they're great." sarah paulson -- [ applause ] sarah paulson's fantastic. that's what i hear. o.j. actually video conferenced into his parole hearing today, because the board was 120 miles away from his prison. yeah, not a good sign when even the parole board is scared to be near him. [ laughter and applause ] "can he see us? he can't see us, right?" a lot of people didn't know how to feel about the news. on one hand, o.j. is a a convicted felon. on the other hand, he managed to keep trump off tv for a a whole afternoon. so it's -- [ cheers and applause ] kind of a community service.

of course, the other big story is this interview president trump did with "the new york times." and the paper said that he made several false claims. and trump was like, "but you chose to print them, so once again, fake news." [ laughter and applause ] "so that's your -- that's on you." in the interview, trump warned special counsel robert mueller not to look into his family's finances. then mueller was like, "well, i wasn't going to, but now i definitely am." i mean, what are you trying -- "and don't look in that box." [ light laughter ] "never mind what's in that box." now i have to look in the box. [ light laughter ] trump also said that washington, d.c. should do a a big parade down pennsylvania avenue, like the bastille day parade that he went to in paris. trump said it should be just like his inauguration, but with people. [ laughter and applause ] i think that would be beautiful. but right now it is "made in america" week at the white house.

so trump hosted a bunch of business leaders to talk about american products. and, as always, trump made sure to focus on the most important issue. watch this. >> so what label do you like better, "made in america" or "made in the usa"? tell me. think about it. >> usa. [ light laughter ] >> what do you like better, "made in america" or "made in the usa"? what do you like, secretary, how do you feel? it used to be "made in the usa," i think. how do you feel, michael? "made in the usa" or "made in america"? peter, what do you like? what does the media like? do you like "made in america" or "made in the usa," steve? but either is great. or both. [ laughter ] >> steve: what? [ laughter ] >> jimmy: goodness. then trump was like, "glad we got that settled. next issue, mary-kate or ashley?" [ laughter ] "what do you think, senator?" mary-kate?" [ applause ] "i can see that. what do you think? the media thinks ashley?" meanwhile, the identities of the people who attended the meeting between donald trump jr. and the russians keep coming out. it's making some people in washington very nervous.

so they're actually coming forward with their alibis to just prove that they weren't there. >> steve: really? >> jimmy: yeah. i mean, check out what they had to say. for example, chris christie said, "i was busy shutting down coney island so i could ride the cyclone by myself." something where a female protagonist could kind of live in a -- in a world and play by the same rules that men get to play by. and so those are hard to find. and so we -- we read a couple of pages of unpublished graphic novel, and something sparked something for us, and we developed it for five years and here we are. >> jimmy: it's really fun. and james mcavoy is it? he's in it as well? >> james mcavoy is in it. >> jimmy: he's just fantastic. >> sofia boutella. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: [ indiscerible ] i was breast -- breaststroking. >> you were doing the breaststroke. >> jimmy: i was doing the breaststroke. yeah, you know -- you know how i swim. man, come on. i want to thank you for, you recommended a -- these golf clubs. >> oh, pxg's. >> jimmy: pxg's, and i got them, and it's amazing. >> they're ridiculous. >> jimmy: i mean, my ball goes 20 yards further into the woods. i mean, you really -- you can't -- [ laughter ] you can't find my ball. i mean, there's no way to even -- bother looking. you see like weird animals that you would maybe race next season. 'cause everyone likes shark week. >> i -- so i -- i've had an infatuation with sharks my whole life. >> jimmy: you have. >> and i basically turn into like a nerd when i talk about

sharks. >> jimmy: yeah. >> i know a ton about them. and for me, i've always wanted to dive with a white, and i've always wanted to be in the cage. like that's -- i wanted to. >> jimmy: dive with the white. >> dive with a white. [ light laughter ] i want to dive with a white. >> jimmy: 'cause you never know what is going to happen this sunday. you don't want to die with the white. you would dive with a white shark, really? >> i told my wife i wanted to do it without a cage. and she said, well, we have a a family. i don't know -- >> jimmy: we have a baby, yeah. you know, you're not doing that. >> i don't know if that's really gonna fly. >> jimmy: i was -- someone asked me to do that once, to get in the cage, i go, no. >> it's cool. it's really -- >> jimmy: absolutely not. [ light laughter ] i love to live vicariously through you. >> i had like a nose of a great white about that close to my face. it was awesome. awesome. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: i would start crying. i would start crying -- [ light laughter ] under water tears. and it would be more salt water than you've ever seen in your life. i would be so frightened by that. how big is that? >> i mean, she was -- i think this one was only about eight feet. >> jimmy: oh, that's it? yeah, exactly, yeah. [ light laughter ] oh, never mind. >> it's small when you -- like i had -- i had a 13-foot hammer head, out of a cage, swim this close to my face.

>> jimmy: well, what do you do when a shark comes up -- you punch them in the nose, right? >> no, i mean, well, a a hammer -- a hammer that's so wide, you just -- and their mouth is so far underneath, you just take their hammer and move 'em in a different direction. >> jimmy: oh, this is totally insane. [ laughter ] so, to race a shark, you go -- it's not really fair, right? 'cause how fast do sharks -- great white sharks go? >> whites can swim up to 25 miles an hour. >> jimmy: how fast can michael phelps swim? >> without that. >> jimmy: yeah. >> six miles an hour. with that -- [ talking over each other ] >> jimmy: by the way, look at this. so what is this thing called? >> so, it's a monofin. basically it was designed so i can swim like a shark. but -- and that's -- >> jimmy: that's you wearing it. >> that's the full get-up. [ light laughter ] that's the full get-up, yeah. >> jimmy: so, now, you get the whole -- does the suit help as well? >> it's a little buoyant. so, it helps me float a little bit. honestly, the fin was supposed to make me swim kind of like a a shark but it was -- >> jimmy: does it work? >> it makes me faster. i mean, it definitely makes you faster, but -- >> jimmy: so the challenge would be -- so it's -- is the

shark going to go 25 miles an hour? and can a shark go in a a straight line? >> so we got him to swim in a a straight line. they won't go 25 miles an hour the whole 100 meters. it's just in little short, like short bursts. >> jimmy: how did the shark go -- go from one end -- is it in the pool? is the shark in the pool? [ light laughter ] 'cause then you've got to get that shark out of the pool. that would be a -- no. [ light laughter ] [ talking over each other ] >> i don't think i would've survived that. >> jimmy: all right, everybody out. sharks only, sharks only swim. [ light laughter ] you're swimming in the ocean. >> swimming in the ocean with a a shark. and we're not in there at the same time. we have safety divers underneath and -- >> jimmy: of course. >> we actually ended up getting him to swim in a straight line. >> jimmy: you're a national treasure, you're michael phelps. you can't do stuff like that. i don't even want you going in a cage with a shark. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: so shark school, you get in a cage, and you get right up and you -- >> shark school i was out of the cage. i had 15 sharks around me, nurse sharks laying on my leg. yeah, it was crazy. it was cool. but i want to show a clip of you. here's michael phelps cage diving with sharks. take a look at this. >> coming in here, michael, guys -- coming in on the bay. >> that was a shark.

this is her new book, "the stars in our eyes." it's available right now. ladies and gentlemen, please welcome julie klam! ♪ [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: oh, you look gorgeous. welcome to the show. thank you for being here. i love the book. >> oh, thank you. >> jimmy: it's about celebrities and our obsession with celebrities and obviously we have a ton of celebrities on our show. that's our show, basically. but why are we obsessed with celebrities? what is the obsession? >> well, the things we do in our life to escape, we go to ballgames or movies or watch tv shows or listen to albums. the celebrities are the people that star in those events. and we like to see them in those and we like to see them outside of those realms, the sort of just like us type of things.

some people like to see celebrities as president of the united states. >> jimmy: yes, yes, yes. some people like to see that as well. yeah. this is true, though. but you do want to see -- i don't know why. but why do you want to see a a celebrity pumping gas? >> because it makes you feel like you're similar, you have a -- you have something in common because you also pump gas. [ light laughter ] or you -- >> jimmy: i mean, i do. i feel like brad pitt -- >> do you pump gas? >> jimmy: yeah, every time. [ laughter ] >> every time? >> jimmy: i haven't pumped gas in five years. of course i have -- no, no. i do. yeah, no, i do it. absolutely. >> it gets on your hands. >> jimmy: please. i can't do it. >> you have people for that. >> jimmy: i have people for that, yeah, of course. anyone else. >> i know. you can't not. it's addictive. >> jimmy: have you ever written to a celebrity, like growing up as a kid? >> i did. i actually, um -- when i was a a kid i loved shaun cassidy. and i had a "people" magazine -- he was in "the hardy boys" for people who aren't born in the dark ages. [ laughter ] and i thought -- in a "people" magazine, he was sitting atop his fan mail. so i thought -- >> jimmy: sitting atop. oh, my goodness. >> i thought he read his own fan mail. so i wrote him a letter. i wanted him to see it so i wrote it in glitter. [ laughter ] addressed it to shaun cassidy, abc studios, hollywood. and it -- i got something back from his fan club. so it actually did get to him. that's how people in hollywood post offices work. >> jimmy: yeah, i did not know that. but now people just like, kind of tweet celebrities and they hope for a tweet back. >> they do. >> jimmy: or a retweet or they want, like -- the autographs aren't even a thing. they just want selfies. >> they do.

they like selfies. what's interesting to me is people that take selfies at madam tussaud's. and they post them. it's like -- you don't care if they're actually a celebrity. just -- you can be a wax one. [ light laughter ] wax is fine. >> jimmy: and what celebrities are you fascinated with right now? >> i've had a long obsession with jennifer aniston. i actually have a chapter in my book about her. [ cheers and applause ] right? isn't she the best? >> jimmy: we love jennifer aniston. >> i love her. i think i related to her as rachel and i was really happy when she got together with brad pitt. and then when they broke up, i was devastated. [ light laughter ] and i -- i actually went into therapy and my therapist said, "you look upset." and i said, "i know this sounds crazy, but i'm really upset about brad and jen breaking up." [ laughter ] and she said, "you said i have no idea how many of my patients have come in and said that." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: you're kidding me. really? >> nope. >> jimmy: wow. >> we were all upset. we should have had some kind of a mourning group or a grieving
