phillies past and present sharing their thoughts after the death of dutch daulton. flooding danger. a slow moving storm is bringing a lot of rain to our area. how it can impact your afternoon rush. and rundown, new video shows an atv driver after he attacked a police officer in camden. nbc 10 news starts now. >> busy monday morning. 5:30. good morning. welcome to nbc 10 news today. i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm vai sikahema. let's start with meteorologist bill henley in the most accurate nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather forecast. first alert issued because of the system moving our way, right? >> a potential for heavy rain, which could lead to flooding in the area. we had so much rain lately. we could see another 1 to 2 inches of rain today. philadelphia, the suburbs, new jersey, delaware, greatest risk. during the day today. the first alert until midnight tonight. floodwaters, if we do see them, will be subsiding by then. the steady rain during the day will be heavy at times, may see
strong thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening hours. so flooding and flash flooding is a threat for us today. here comes the first round of rain. this will not be the beginning of the all day rain. it is starting now in philadelphia. we're seeing the rain in the lehigh valley. berks county, and delaware as well. this is light rain to start with in philadelphia. but there are going to be periods of some heavier downpours. we have seen some pockets of heavier rain northeastern maryland. look at this, already drying out at least temporarily in annapolis. more rain going to be coming up for the southwest. little bit of a downpour coming into the reading area, about to get a little heavier for reading, that rain will be on and off to start with. and then steady rain this afternoon. yeah, round up the troops and get the umbrella ready. the temperatures are in the 60s right now. and low 70s. not going to see a warmup today thanks to the rain and potential for thunderstorms. 74 degrees in new jersey. 73 degrees in philadelphia. and 72 with the chance of strong
thunderstorms later in the day for delaware. i'll break it down for each part of our area to show you when the rain is most likely to impact you, when i'm back in ten minutes. first, jessica boyington first alert traffic. >> we are on admiralton boulevard here, the toll plaza up ahead. we're clear over the betsy ross. i'll check in with that to make sure everything is fine. 14 minutes on the blue route. that's moving from 95 to the schuylkill expressway. speeds into the 60s. we'll end with the boulevard. around our cameras at fox street, no problems or delays in both directions north and southbound. traffic still moving along nicely. back to you. >> jessica, thank you. we continue to follow breaking news this morning on the passing of dutch daulton here on nbc 10. >> phillies legend lost his fight with a deadly brain cancer
this weekend. long time catcher was a three time all-star who played 14 seasons with the phillies, known as dutch. he was one of most popular phillies players of all team and led the team to a miracle run in 1993. he was 55 years old. take a look at this morning's philadelphia daily news cover. it reads, good-bye, dutch, phillies wall of famer darren daulton succumbs to cancer. nbc 10's pamela osborne is live for us in south philadelphia. this is sending shock waves through the community, pam. >> reporter: absolutely. daulton will forever be known as one of the toughest players in baseball. the 55-year-old kansas native spent 14 seasons with the phillies. a three-time all-star throughout his time here as you mentioned. daulton or dutch as he was often called was a member of macho row and helped the team make it to the '93 world series. loved by fans here at home and
across the nation. it wasn't just what he did on the field that was notable, daulton, who lost his four-year battle with brain cancer, last night, created the darren daulton foundation after his diagnosis in 2013. since then, the organization has been financially assisting others who are battling the disease as well. our friends at csn talked to larry bowa about daulton's life and leadership. >> hard nosed, played one way, play it hard, a great family guy, my heart goes out to and the kids. he's one of the guys that the phillies fans related to because he left everything on the field. there is nothing that you can say, i short changed you tonight or i didn't give 100%. this guy was all in, every game, and played with a lot of pain throughout his career.
>> reporter: carli lloyd tweeted how daulton influenced her. so sad, my favorite of all time, why i chose number 10 jersey. thoughts and prayers going out to his family and loved ones. when i come back next hour, hear how former teammates are remembering dutch. that's coming up at 6:30. reporting live in south philly, pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. >> thank you. he was such a huge presence in his clubhouse and was fun to be around. when we were all at the vet in the early '90s, getting more reaction to the death of phillies legend and we'll bring it to you all morning long. head to the nbc 10 facebook page to hear my memories of dutch and tweet us your own thoughts. 5:35. in other news, new this morning, police are searching for this man, accused of hitting a detective with an atv in camden. authorities say the detective and another officer saw him tampering with equipment at a gas station and when they told him to stop, the man plowed into the detective with his atv. the detective was hurt, but is
recovering. police want to know who ran over and killed a woman in center city and just kept driving. police say this happened early sunday morning on ray street. investigators say 53-year-old ann broaddrick was crossing the street when she was hit and the driver kept going. we spoke to a friend of the victim who did not want her face shown on camera. >> saw her lying on the street, dead. somebody left her there like an animal. >> police are looking for a white four door jeep wrangler liking showing front end damage. new this morning, new jersey governor chris christie says president trump is welcome to stay at his state owned beach house, the one he was criticized for using during the state government shutdown last month. right now president trump is in the middle of a 17-day trip to his private golf club in bedminister. pence for president in 2020? the vice president is denying
that suggestion. a new york times report said pence was considering a run for the white house should president trump not seek re-election. the times quoted multiple advisers and donors as sources. newspaper noted that pence's aggressive political schedule and fund-raising operation. pence tweeted out this official statement that reads in part, the allegations in this article are categorically false and represent the latest attempt bit media to divide this administration. my entire team will continue to focus all our efforts to advance the president's agenda and see him re-elected in 2020. any suggestion otherwise is laughable and absurd. the white house is praising the united states security council for taking tough action against north korea. overnight, president trump tweeted he was very happy and impressed with the vote. also overnight, secretary of state rex tillerson said the best way north korea can show it is ready to talk is to cease its launches. on saturday, the security council approved severe economic
sanctions in response to north korea's recent missile test. they prohibit other countries from importing north korean coal, seafood and iron. the economic fallout could be in the billion dollar range. >> even allies in the region like china, japan, south korea, all agreeing with the united states that north korea and nuclear capabilities must be stopped. >> also this weekend, the deputy attorney general says leak investigations won't target journalists. the white house and congress could be fair game. 5:38. philadelphia, cloudy skies and the rain is just starting to move in. we got some steady and potentially heavy rain moving into the area. the problem is we had a lot of rain lately, you can see how high the schuylkill is when you're looking at boathouse row. another couple of inches of rain and we'll easily see areas of flooding later today. we're seeing the first rain moving in. light to start with. this is the first batch of rain.
you can see it is already drying out in parts of baltimore. this steadier rainfall is going to be intensifying later this morning and this afternoon. we could see heavy downpours and possibly thunderstorms. see moderate showers now moving towards wilmington and into chester county, the heavier showers moving in from the west, clarksburg some rainfall into the lehigh valley. reading was one of the first areas to see the first rain drops. now moderate showers moving through berks county. there is the break. here is the heavier rainfall and steady rainfall this afternoon. not going to all be ready. going to be steady this afternoon with pockets of heavy rain and the chance of some thunderstorms. thunderstorms going to wait until later today. 4:00 this afternoon. 70 degrees in philadelphia. that 72 degrees now. rain will keep a lid on the temperatures. the rain is steady at 10:00 and at noon and potentially heavy at 2:00 this afternoon. the suburbs, 64 degrees now. the first rain has started to move in. may see a little bit of a break
between, well, now, and 8:00, the steadier rain moves into the area, once that next batch moves in, it is going to carry on through this afternoon. a chance of late day showers and thunderstorms. lehigh valley, 64 degrees right now. 60s all day long. the rain this morning, will come down heavier later this afternoon and this afternoon. possibility of downpours with a chance of some thunderstorms for the lehigh valley. new jersey, cloudy skies, rain just starting to move into the picture. 63 degrees now. up to 72 degrees at 10:00. not much warmer than that. not with winds off the ocean. that rainfall will be joined by thunder and lightning late in the afternoon. the jersey shore will see some potentially heavy rainfall, could see two inches by the time this one is done at the shore. 73 degrees right now. a better chance of seeing some strong thunderstorms at the shore during the day today. and in southern and central delaware while it is steady rain for wilmington at 10:00. 71 degrees at noon time.
and chance of some afternoon showers and thunderstorms. look at the ten-day on 10, when to expect dry weather and you'll need your sunglasses again when i'm back in ten minutes. 19 minutes before 6:00 a.m. a check on traffic for you, morning commute this morning. >> jessica boyington is watching the roads. >> watching 95 now and our cameras around girard avenue. a little volume gathering on the southbound side. hasn't affected the total drive times yet. everybody is moving. 13 minutes from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. speeds there into the 60s. we look good there. the 42 freeway, it is okay. five minutes now on that northbound side if you're moving to the bridge to 55. average speeds into the 60s. no problems moving to philly from the 42 freeway. new jersey turnpike looks good too. traffic moving in this direction is headed northbound. this is southbound moving towards delaware. heading over to the delaware memorial bridge, no problems there. back to you.

the plane. the flight hit turbulence before it landed. it jumped so much, drinks splattered all over the ceiling. >> i never experienced anything like it before. the thought that went into my mind is when a plane goes down, this is what it feels like. >> three passengers and seven crew members were hurt, but they will be okay. check out this ball of fire north jersey. a pilot and two passengers survived this plane crash in franklin township. the plane went down as it approached the airport. all three were rushed to the hospital with injuries. the faa is investigating this crash. 5:46. minnesota's governor is calling an explosion at a mosque there an act of terrorism. the blast rocked the islamic center in the suburb of minneapolis early saturday morning. a witness reported seeing someone throw an object at the building and investigators later found an explosive device. no one was hurt. but the imam's office was damaged. the mosque primarily serves people from the area's large
somali community. a lawsuit against the justice department over a move to strip funds from sanctuary cities. last week the justice department released an application for a grant that chicago has used in the past to purchase police equipment. but this year, the application requires cities to give the department of homeland security access to detention facilities. and they would also have to notify dhs before releasing anyone wanted on immigration violations. the lawsuit claims those requirements turn local jails into federal facilities. >> chicago will not let our police officers become political pawns in a debate. chicago will not let our residents have the fundamental rights isolated and violated. and chicago will never relinquish our status as a welcoming city. >> now, philadelphia is a sanctuary city as well, which means if an undocumented ingrant is arrested for something other
than their stat ous they will n alert federal agents. 5:48. clouds over cape may. you can see a little bit of sunlight on the horizon. dry streets now . during the day, a rainy one. already seeing rain in delaware. 71 degrees. 70s for philadelphia, the suburbs, the lehigh valley. south jersey, a mix of 60s and 70s. 70 now in turnersville. rain moving in, may drop the temperatures a little bit. then come up a little bit during the day. with winds coming in off the ocean and steady rain for much of the day, not going to be much warmer than it is right now. grab your jacket and your rain gear. and you'll need it first thing this morning. we went on the air this morning, dry at 4:00, but now the rain is steady in reading. you see heavier downpours moving
into chester county right now. and philadelphia is get something light rainfall as well. steady rain to begin with in wilmington. there are some breaks to the southwest and the precipitation. but you see a thunderstorm in baltimore, that's a possibility for us too. thunderstorms during the day. the next round of wet weather for later this morning and through this afternoon, into the evening hours, and that's when we could see some heavier downpours in the area. 10:00 this morning, rain from delaware, south jersey, the suburbs, lehigh valley and philadelphia and it is going to be ramping up this afternoon. look at that heavy rainfall for delaware and south jersey, 2:30 this afternoon. may see some improving conditions for allentown, reading. the rain will be coming down. just a lighter rain at 2:30. and during the evening commute, we may get breaks in the precipitation for trenton, philadelphia and wilmington. at 7:00 this evening. look at those downpours for south jersey and in delaware. that's when we have a thunderstorm risk, some strong thunderstorms later today.
that's at 7:00. by 9:30, we're mainly dry. few more showers to the west, so there is a chance we'll see a few scattered light showers before midnight, but there is plenty of rainfall on the way for today, which is why we issued a first alert for the flood threat. 73 degrees this afternoon. the sun, it is back tomorrow, after morning clouds we'll see clearing during the day. 83, that's after a morning low of 65 degrees. pretty nice for wednesday and thursday. we'll need this period to dry out, more wet weather, the possibility of more thunderstorms starting on friday and into saturday. not an all day rainfall on saturday. a chance of scattered showers on sunday and into monday. and even next tuesday, then finally drying out next wednesday. great as they are, we don't feel bill henley's forecast is enough for you. we want you to have more information. you can always get instant updates and alerts with the nbc 10 app. you can track the storms in real time with our radar to find out when they'll hit your

police say a newark woman used stolen money to pay for her wedding. she's facing charges patricia nicholas lundi worked as the treasurer of the dickinson organ theater society in wilmington. police say she opened a credit card under the company's name and racked up $62,000 in charges. a montgomery county bridge will close today for construction. crews will start work on the gross town road bridge over the creek in west pottsgrove. it will last until late november. now the jersey shore, today's rain could possibly cause more flooding at the dune construction project. this is in margate. yesterday, a viewer sent us these photos from the area. a worker was on the beach, inspecting the sand. last week, a judge halted work on the dune project, that was after rain created large ponds of standing water between new dunes and the end of the streets. margate had to close several beaches because the water contained high levels of bacteria. a hearing on the project is scheduled for friday.
