>> reporter: north korea's military is upping the ante making new threats against the united states saying they hope to attack this region by mid august if their military leaders accept it. this morning the small island of guam is said to be a target. american territories face threats as the war of words between united states and north korea reaches a fever pitch. the north korean regime responding to president trump's chilling warning. >> they will be met with fire and fury. >> reporter: calling the president senile, saying he was cooped up at the golf course and was clueless about how things were developing adding sound dialogue is not possible with some as bereft of reason as president trump and only absolute force can work on him. north korea warning they are seriously examining plans to attack guam where close to 7,000

service members are stationed and home to 160,000 u.s. citizens. located just 2,200 miles away from north korea in the pacific, the threat putting some residents here on edge. >> i am alarmed. i'm concerned. we mustn't be intimidated. >> reporter: now officials and officers tell nbc the pentagon has prepared a strike plan if the president orders one. for months u.s. forces have been training with recently updated b-1 bombers located on guam. multiple sources say the planes which are not nuclear capable would target two dozen of north korea's missile launch sites and support facilities. since the end of may the b 1s have conducted 11 practice runs including one monday flying round trips and refuelling in

mid air, preparing for a possible operation. north korea missile tests but the u.s. on alert. this morning military experts say an attack on guam isn't likely with officials urging the public to remain calm. they believe guam could be a target because of the closeness to north korea. the same muscle stands to protect the region. there are b bombers, nuclear submarine and missile defense system that is poised to protect everyone who lives here. >> thank you. >> so just what led to president trump's stern warning to north korea and what has the reaction been like inside the administration? andrea mitchell is nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent. >> a u.s. president for the first time suggesting what sounded like a nuclear first

>> reporter: u.s. troops here exercise with south korean allies regularly. another one is planned later this month. north korea says these are provocative. south korea says they are vital. its president calling for a complete overhaul of south korea's military. the war on words putting this city on edge like the american troops here to protect them they have lived for decades with threats from the north. in any conflict they would likely be the first casualty. the unthinkable, this morning perhaps just a little closer. south korea's president today saying stop ratcheting up the tension. it was a message directed at the north but it is one that many in asia are also privately directing at president trump. >> thank you. >> even as the north korean crisis plays out we are learning about a series of bizarre incidents in cuba.

u.s. diplomats sent home after apparently suffering hearing problems and other symptoms and officials say this was caused by a deliberate covert attack. peter alexander has the latest on this. try to explain this for us. >> reporter: this one is bizarre. it reads like a cold war spy novel. one government official saying incidents were so severe that some needed to get hearing aides. it comes as the relations between the u.s. and cuba has started to improve and now future of diplomacy between the countries seems uncertain. new questions about just what happened in cuba after a string of bizarre incidents that left american diplomats with severe hearing loss. >> it is a cause of great concern for us. it has caused a variety of physical symptoms in these american citizens who work for the u.s. government.

we take those very seriously and there is an investigation underway. >> reporter: the a.p. reporting the incident saying after months of investigations u.s. officials have concluded that the diplomats have been exposed to advanced device operating outside the range of audible sound. it was not immediately clear if the device was a weapon used in a deliberate attack or some other purpose. the state department saying they suffered a variety of physical symptoms. >> we talk about the safety and security of american citizens at home and abroad is our top priority. >> reporter: cuba saying it is investigating the incident admitting cuba has never nor would it ever allow that the territory be used for action against families. it took place shortly after u.s. embassy in havana reopened.

former campaign chairman paul manafort searching for banking documents and tax records. the raid required a search warrant. convinced there is probable cause a crime may have been committed. the past foreign political work has been swept into the investigation in the 2016 election. he has repeatedly denied wrong doing and has voluntarily given documents to congressional committees investigating the allegation. we are hearing from the former google employee fired for his controversial manifesto relating to that company's diversity efforts. >> good morning to you. former google engineer ignited a national fire storm with his ten page essay that many call sexist and demoralizing to women in tech. it cost him his job and now he is writing back. >> i don't like having these

taboos. >> reporter: software engineer speaking out about being fired by google for an internal memo writing that male and female tech workers differ in their abilities due to biological causes. >> the culture is very left leaning and just intolerant of anyone that holds a different opinion. >> reporter: google ceo says his manifesto violated its code of conduct and crossed the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our work place. reaction to the firing was mixed. julian assange who reportedly offered him a job tweeted women and men deserve respect including not firing them for politely expressing ideas but rather arguing back. others say they are fed up with

such attitudes. she says she left because of what she felt was a misogynistic culture. >> so many of my women friends were treated [ inaudible ]. >> the labor department is suing google over pay discrimination. google denies the allegation. this new ad for a proposed class action lawsuit against google seeks victims of alleged compensation discrimination. demore says he fired a complaint saying upper management is shaming me in order to silence my complaints. he says his goal was to spark a conversation about gender in tech. >> i'm not just attacking diversity. i'm attacking the fact that we can't discuss any of these issues. that is hurting the problem. >> he believes his firing was

illegal and will be taking legal action to challenge his dismissal. now google is planning to hold an all staff town hall today to address the controversy. >> i would imagine they will hear interesting comments during that town hall. now to the lottery fever sweeping this country this week. with no winner powerball drawing growing. kerry sanders. >> the amount of money is mind boggling if you were to win the jackpot. this is the first time in the seven years of the two lotteries running at the same time that jackpots have exceeded $300 million. last night during the powerball nobody won. the odds of winning are one in 292 million. if you did win last night you would have taken initially lump sum $224 million before the

be on the stand as early as today. joe friar is at the courthouse in denver. >> reporter: taylor swift's mother took the stand offering emotional testimony. she did not witness the alleged groping and was not in the room at the time but said she believes her daughter. fighting tears at times she testified about what happened before her daughter's denver concert. i saw her face and i could tell there was something wrong. she said a guy just grabbed my behind. taylor swift said it happened while posing for this photo with radio dj. the picture was sealed by the court but published last year by tmz. andrea swift started to cry saying tailor couldn't believe that after the incident she thanked them for being there. no one from swift's team called police. why? i didn't want this event to

tomorrow, and tomorrow we'll see a combination of clouds and sunshine. today, sunshine all around. highs in the 80s for philadelphia. 86, that's the normal high for this time of year. middle 80s for the suburbs, new jersey, and the lehigh valley. and sunny skies and low humidity in delaware, the high of 84. south philadelphia is one step closer to getting a casino. the pennsylvania gaming control board has approved the proposal for a hotel and casino at the sports complex. the casino project would have 2,000 slot machines, 200 rooms, plus restaurants. a group pushing for a different casino location now has 30 days to appeal the board's decision. barring such an appeal, the gaming boards will finalize that license for the south philadelphia site. let's head to south jersey where three people are in the hospital this morning after they were shot in cumberland county. police tell us this happened on pearl street in bridgeton last night. so far, investigators have not made any arrests. today a preliminary hearing will continue for most of the 18
