tv NBC10 News at 5pm NBC October 31, 2017 5:00pm-6:01pm EDT
video of the apparent attacker holding what looks like a gun in his hand. that suspect is now in custody. and sources tell our sister station in new york this was, in fact, intentional. we know the suspect wassing either a bb gun or paintball gun and drove a truck the wrong way into a bike path killing at least people. now the suspect was arrested a distance away from the scene. this is no longer an ongoing threat. here now is a live look from the scene in the city's tribeca neighborhood right thousand with police surrounding. you can see the pickup truck right there in the middle of the scene. also surrounded by a number of police. there will be a briefing in about 15 minutes or so. we will bring live in the breaking news center, nbc 10 news. >> stay right there for a
moment. we want to bring in harry hairston, who is live right now from new york city. you were already in new york working on another story just block was from this scene. you are there now. tell whaus you're seeing. >>. >> reporter: right now, we're seeing a larger police presence. you can see as i turn this around. i want to show you police starting to move down to where everything ended. as i adjust my camera so you can get a good picture. this has been the scene all afternoon. more and more police cars going down west street, down to chamber, where the red pickup truck finally came to a halt and captured that suspect is but after five people all struck, two of them are fatal. there are other police vehicles here and officers as well. we're looking on the other side.
new york state police has been coming into the area a lot of new york's police officers still at this area right now as well as the fire departments still standing by. as they say, this is no longer a threat. one would think there's something still to investigate as police and counterterrorism squads and units are still here. as a matter of fact, take a look at some of the people standing by for at least well over an hour now. just coming to the scene trying to see what's going on. the young lady with the blond hair, she doesn't speech very good english. she says she's from france. she says does bring back memories. see if she can share a few words. we talked a little bit earlier. you say you're from france. and you had had just been texting your parents in france. >> yes. >> they are concerned about you visiting new york and hearing this.
>> yes. >> you say the family text you and are concerned about you. >> yes. >> this brings back bad thought what is has happened in paris. >> it's very saddening. >> a lot of sad neness. >> terrible. >> thank you so much. i just wanted to tell you these are just some of the people visiting here. our hearts go out to those injured and lost their lives as well. >> once again, we have plr
police officers helping the elderly come off the street. officers are also helping parents, mothers and daughters. they were taken with by police. they are trying to help this gentleman who is trying to reunite with his family as well. this has been the scene all afternoon. one of chaos and confusion. it's something of this nature causing abomination of
desolation memories for folk who is are visiting from other countries. >> this being just two blocks away. reporting live for us from the scene there in loweren manhattan. harry, standby. >> you're watching what investigators are calling a possible terror attack. it is since ended. a man drove the truck you're look iing at on your screen in these live pictures into a number of people killing six of them and injuring at least 15. we're going to go back to the breaking news center. this is in tribeca just north of one world trade center. you worked in the city for four years and know it quite well. give us some perspective here. >> this is tribeca, a very trendy and popular neighborhood. you're right, it's very close to the world trade site just a
short distance away. there's also a high school there in the area heard the commotion there. this area is also very popular with people who ride bikes and jog because there's a bike path. also there's a hudson river. it's a very beautiful area. it certainly draws a lot of tourists to the area and workout enthusiasts. at 3:00 in the afternoon, when the weather is partly sunny, fairly warm, you can almost expect there were a lot of people there in that area when this incident happened. now meanwhile, we saw mayor de blasio on the scene. the mayor will turn to his deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterintelligence or counterterrorism and that's john miller. what you cannot see is the nypd
now doing everything they can to learn everything they can about that suspect. is he acting alone. why did he do this? what we know so far about this suspect is is that according to eyewitnesss, when he was in that area, he yelled a la akbar before converging into the attack. he's described as a man in his 30s with middle eastern appearance. this description coming from three law enforcement officials there on the ground. that suspect now taken to bellevue hospital where he almost certainly is under heavy guard. they really want to know as much as they can about this suspect out of fear that he could be a part of some sort of a team, if you will, so certainly they are doing everything they can both on the ground and behind the scenes to make sense of what happened here and why this particular suspect chose that area to pull out or carry out
what's now being described as an intention attack. >> you were saying there's a lot of people in the area. it reminds you of the areas along the river. a lot of people out jog iging. there was a high school that was nearby. so definitely some scary times in that area. and we know that a number of law enforcements are investigating at that point. and still there are a lot of questions out there. we don't know a motive. but a little perspective there. >> snapchat of what is purported to be the suspect. do you mind describing what you know about that video and how he
came to obtain it. >> we got some of that video from a high school student who heard the commotion and then this age of technology and camera phones, he immediately grabbed his phone and began recording. you can see the suspect right there running in the middle of the west side highway. you can see yellow cab there is in the picture. he's holding in his hand what appears to be a gun. he's running around frantically in and out of traffic. this come iing from a high scho student. this would have happened around the same time that students were getting out of school. and so certainly as we work to learn more about the six victims killed, we certainly hope that it did not involve any students coming out of that school. you talked about the weather and proximity to the world trade center. so really on given day, new york city is a very popular city with a lot of tourists. so this particular area on any
given day, especially on a day like this, would have a lot of people just walking around, taking in the sights and sounds of new york city. and so that is the concern here. more right now the focus is the suspect. who is he? is he a part of a network, a terror network of some sort. this is what the nypd is concerned about. they have seen this before so they have a plan of operation when something like this happens. you can almost certainly expect they are working that plan. dotting every i, crossing every t to make sure they have all bases covered. >> stay where you are. we'll continue to gather your insight there. intelligence officials, we have learned, are treating this like it is a terror attack.
the white house has since been briefed. we learned that brand new information. president trump has been briefed about that vehicle. this is what you're watching here. that drove into a crowd of people killing six, injuring 15. white house spokeswoman says the president, a new york native too, they are continue keep their thoughts and prayers with all those affected. >> this is all new information coming into nbc 10. we are getting information by the minute. we're following every breaking development in new york. be sure to stay with us. we'll be right back.
he's a husband, father, veteran... but most of all, he's a fighter. chris brown has never been afraid to take on the big fights. that's why he stood up to republicans and democrats alike to fight the north jersey casinos and the takeover of atlantic city. chris brown is fighting to protect jobs in our region... a true champion
for the working men and women of atlantic county. on november 7th, let's keep him fighting for us. chris brown for state senate, he's on our side. a bridge shut down over politics. their biggest triumph was a traffic jam. chris christie and kim guadagno's failures shortchanged our future. after 8 years- incomes are down, costs are up and our economy is crawling. we are better than this. i'm phil murphy together we'll build a stronger, fairer economy that works for every new jersey family. christie and guadagno left new jersey stuck. i'm serious about moving new jersey forward.
we are continuing to follow that break. ing news out of new york city. six people are dead, 15 are hurt in a possible terror attack. just blocks away from the site of the world trade center. >> this is video of the apparent gunman behind its entire incident holding what appears to be a gun. you can see them there in the middle of traffic weaving in and out of car. he is in custody and sources are telling our sister station this was an intentional act. we know the suspect was either holding a bb gun or paintball gun. and drove the truck a rental pickup truck drove the wrong way into a bike path killing at
least six people, wounding at least 15 others. police say the man also targeted a school bus with three children on board. they were not hurt. investigators say the suspect is a man in his 30s. possibly of middle eastern descent and he did jump out of the pickup truck yelling a la akbar. harry hairston is is joining us now live right now from new york city. >> headed away from the river going towards cambridge street. what you're looking at, with my iphone here, you should be able to see fbi agents and it does look as though there's an
individual in a white outfit with maybe some type of outfit. make a look at the others here. investigators trying to put together the pieces to find out why on this halloween day. this attack that went down west street. a couple dozen more that comes back. there is what i started to make out is a command center which appears to be coming this way. another emergency services vehicle is now starting to change positions. trying to keep an eye on all of
the activity and what does it mean, what part of the investigation are they in, what can they look for in addition to what they know already. that is words they heard. >> harry, i think we're losing you just a little bit. harry hairston reporting live there from the scene. a lot going on interfering with his cell phone technology. but he is trying to give us perspective of what is going on down there. if you didn't hear him, he did say that initially it appeared that some of the officers were leafing. now that a lot more were coming. e we know the threat of the area is no longer a threat. the suspect is is in custody. however, this is is an active investigation. >> the fbi is on the scene, as you can imagine. we want to mention we're here in philadelphia. police here have been aware of the situation. they are monitoring it closely. they are waiting to see if any philadelphia police officers
need to be deployed there we're going to go back to drey clark. it could be a lot of tourists there. the fact this is in tribeca north of one world trade center. what's the latest? >> just to give you a sense of the area. you're just a short distance away within walking distance from freedom tower where the world trade center site was. you also have a lot of corporations and business there is in the area. and again, this particular area where this tragedy happened happened on a bike path. that bike path is very popular, not just people on their bikes, but also people that like to jog there along the hudson river. so when you consider tourists perhaps walking to the world trade site, the weather today, which was pretty good there along the hudson, you could assume there were a lot of
people out and about in that area when this unfortunate situation happened. now we have seen video of that suspect running around there on the west side highway on chamber street there in the tribeca neighborhood holding in his hand what appears to be that gun. that video coming from a student who goes to high school in that area. so this situation certainly happened at around the same time school would have. letting out there in that tribeca neighborhood. what you're looking at now and there's a live picture of the pickup truck that the suspect was driving there. that suspect is now in police custo custody. taken to bellevue hospital where i'm sure he's under very tight guard. this is a very widespread investigation. as i said a moment ago, the
nypd, atf, all investigative agencies learning about who this suspect is and who he is acting alone. >> we have brand new information we want to tell you about. eight people are now dead. 15 at least are injured. you're looking at a live picture here inside the new york city police department where we're expecting any moment now. perhaps that's a two-minute warning. of a news conference that's about to take place. where we hope to learn a little bit more information about what we were just talking about. who was this person, who was their motive and get updated figures as far as how that investigation is going. >> as you just mentioned, we have just learned that eight people now have been killed. initially it was two and rose to
six and now eight people killed. this is the video that a will the of law enforcement officials are going to be looking at. the suspect there weaving in and out of traffic hold iing what appears to be a gun. we're told a bb gun, perhaps a paintball gun. now we have a will the of officials there at the podium. let's listen in. they are about to begin this press conference. >> good afternoon, everybody. just keep in mind, this is occurred a little more than two hours ago, so all the information we're giving you now is preliminary and subject to change. after i speak, you're going to hear from governor cuomo. members of my executive staff. we have members of the state
police. first, i just want to say that today there was a loss of innocent life in lower. they were going about their days, heading home from work or school. this is a tragedy of the greatest magnitude. for many people, for many families here in new york city and beyond today. i want to commend the response of our officer that was on post near the location who stopped the carnage moments after it began. also the work of the first responders including the fire department and ems personnel truly helped save additional lives. i will give a a chronology in a couple minutes. but now i'd like to introduce mayor de blasio. >> thank you, commissioner. it's a painful day in our city. a horrible tragedy on the west side. let me be clear based on the information we have at this moment, this was an act of terror. and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent
civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them. we, at this moment based on the information we have, we know of eight innocent people who have lost their lives. and over a dozen more injured. we know that this action was intended to break our spirit. but we also know new yorkers are strong, new yorkers are resilient and our spirit will never be moved by an act of violence, an act meant to sb intimidate us. we have been tested before as a city very near the site of today's tragedy. and new yorkers do not give in in the face of these kinds of actions. we'll respond as we always do. we will be undeterred.
i want to thank everyone at the nypd, all our first responders for their extraordinary efforts in the midst of this tragedy starting with the officer who stopped this tragedy from continuing. all of the first responders who came to the aid of those who were injured. an investigation is underway to get all the facts and what we'll tell you today will be preliminary. but we know we will get down to the bottom of what happened. i want to ask all americans to ep keep the families of those lost in your thoughts and prayers. they will need our support. and i want to ask all new yorkers to be vigilant. . we know it's halloween night. and we know in the days ahead, people will be uneasy. we ask all new yorkers to live by the idea of you see
something, say something, tell an officer immediately if you see anything unusual. be vigilant. know that there will be extensive additional employments of officers this evening and throughout the days ahead. we will also keep you posted as the investigation continues. governor cuomo. >> thank you. first, our thoughts and prayers are with those new yorkers who we lost today. reminds us all how precious life is. they left the house this morning. enjoying the beautiful west side of manhattan on a beautiful fall day. they are not going to be returning home. and that shock and that pain is going to be very real. and our thoughts and our prayers are with all of them.
our first responders did an extraordinary job. the nypd, the fdny, the fbi, new york state police, ems, we have the finest security on the globe. and to see them in action today proved that once again. the new terrorist tactic, which they have called for publicly, are these lone wolves who commit act of terror. this is all very preliminary. it's only been a couple hours, but at this point, there's no evidence to suggest a wider plot over a wider scheme. but the actions of one individual, who meant to cause pain and harm and probably death and the resulting terror. and that was the purpose.
we will be more vigilant. more police everywhere. you'll see them in the airports. you'll see them in the tunnels. it's not because there's any evidence of any ongoing threat or any additional threat. it is just out of vigilance and out of caution. the truth is new york is an international symbol of freedom and democracy. that's what we are. and we are proud of it. that also makes us a target for those people who oppose those concepts. and we have lived with this before we felt the pain before. we feel the pain today. but we go forward together and e we go forward stronger than ever. we're not going to let them win. and if we change our lives, we
contort ourselves to them, then they win and we lose. we'll go about our business. there's no evidence of this at this time. there's no reason to have any ub do angioty. you'll see more security forces, but that's only because it's an abundance of caution and not a signal of anything else. and there will be continued investigation and justice will be done. to those we lost, they are in our thoughts and prayers. to the first responders, thank you. you put your life on the line every day and do it better than anyone else. and to new yorkers, be new yorkers.
and live your life and don't let them change us or deter us in any manner, shape or form. thank you. >> thanks, governor cuomo. i know when i'm done, we're going to have a lot of questions. we're not going to go too deep into it. after i get done with the chronology, we're going to talk about the injuries. >> 3:05 p.m., a male drive iing rented home depot pickup truck entered the west side highway bicycle path and began droifing southbound striking a number of pedestrians and bicyclists along the route. at championship street, the truck collided with a bus injuring two adults and two children. after the collision, the driver of the truck, a 29-year-old male, exited the vehicle grandishing two handguns. a police officer confronted the
subject and shot him in the abdomen. the subject was wounded and transported to a local hospital. the paintball gun and repel lat gun were recovered at the scene. the identity is not being released at this time pending further investigation. at this point, there are eight fatalities reported in connection with this incident. several people have been injured and the commissioner will discuss that. >> six of the people died were pronounced at the scene. they were all males. two others were transported in traumatic arrest and pronounced at the hospital. we also transported 11 people all with serious but at this moment not life-threatening injuries. the injuries are what you may expect as a truck went at high
speed down that bicycle path and struck bicyclists and pedestrians. there may be more injuries as people self-evacuated and we will determine that later as we do our survey. but that's the patient count and the deaths as we know it now. >> at this point, we're going to take some questions. >> you want to talk about the program a little bit were. >> through the shield program, we do a wide outreach. we have just under 20,000 members in the private sector.
after isis came out with the issue just about two years ago around this time of year suggesting car attacks, you'll recall one of the targets that suggested was the thanksgiving day parade. we went and did extensive outreach to the truck rental business. we visited over 148 truck rental locations in this area. the obvious ones and talked about suspicious indicators, ways to come forward after attacks in nice, we repeated those visits two more times, either by telephone or going back to the same places. so the industry has had a high level of awareness on this matter. >> any indication that the suspect is a lone wolf?
>> it's way too early to discuss that. >> this is part of the investigation. >> security status? there were reports of schools on lockdowns anything going on or people in the area should be aware of? >> this incident is over. it did end right by the high school so we had to make sure that all the kids were taken care of. we held them in place for awhile. it was important that we do that. but this incident is over. >> hold on. >> was there any indications he resembled a a bomb?
>> he's a 29-year-old male. i'm not going to talk about the truck right now. >> can you con that the suspect said akbar? if so, is that the only indication that this may be an act of terrorism or what else? >> he did make a statement when he exited the vehicle. if you look at the mo of the attack that's consistent with what's been going on, that among with the statement, has enabled us to label this a terrorist attack. >> any intelligence leading up to this if there was something in the works? >> two hours old. we'll update you as we go along. >> it's being conducted with the fbi. >> not right now, no. >> the efforts to secure the
area? >> after the times square incident, i talked to learn from that. we're going to take a look at this. >> he's in the hospital. i'm not going to tell you what hocht. i'm going to let chief gomez talk about the halloween parade. >> that parade will kick off in 90 minutes. we'll proceed with the parade. we have added more resources, more police officers, heavy weapons teams leading to the route as well as more sand trucks. there's also heavy weapons teams being deployed at key locations. >> this is why we do investigations. initially, i'm sure whoever put that out wasn't sure what the
event was. now the determination that e we made. the first row. >> too early in the investigation to know that. >> i haven't looked at the video yet. he entered the bike path and exited at chamber street when he collided with the school bus. there are r no intersections on the west side of the bike path. hold on in the back there. >> do you have that, dan? >> they are among the injured that are serious but not life threatening. >> we're not going to talk about where the home depot was rented from yet. how many people were on the bus?
>> there were two adults and two children on the school bus. in the back? >> don't know. that's part of the investigation. >> we don't have that yet. >> there's a lot of information to be done. we want to give you a preliminary. we'll have more for you later and give you another briefing as more becomes available. at this point, i'm going to ask you to wait for further investigation and another briefing. >> i'll just close us off here by saying, again, nypd is investigating this with our federal partners, with our state partners. there's going to be a very, very to ro investigation. the most important thing is governor cuomo said, as the commissioner said, people should go about their business knowing that nypd is out in force with our partner agencies tonight and
throughout the week. very important additional measures are being taken. but the bottom line is we are going to go about our business in the city. we're not going to be deterred. we'll get you updates later on in the evening. >> mayor de blasio calling this a cowardly terrorist attack. recap as we know it. we learned a 29-year-old man drove a rented home depot truck on a bike path killing 8 people and wounding 15 others. the truck then crashed into a school bus injuring two adults. there's two kids on board as well. >> an officer stopped the suspect shooting him in the abdomen. he was called a lone wolf, meaning he did act alone. but. the mayor was one of the first things he said was this was an act of terror. the threat no more, but will beef up the police presence in
the city tonight. >> president trump just tweeted. he just wrote, quote, in looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. law enforcement is following this closely. he writes not in the usa. the white house briefed. our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected a as we continue to these live pictures out of new york city. governor cuomo really hitting the nail on the head saying we are not going to let them win. we are stay iing on top of this breaking news right now at 5:00. this is a look right now at pictures from lower manhattan where 8 people are dead, 15 others are injured in a possible terror attack. if you're just joining us, the driver crashed into people on a pedestrian path. and on a bike path. >> we also learned he's 29 years
old and crashed into a school bus and brandished two handguns, one was reportedly a bb gun and another a pointball gun. drey clark is live for us in the breaking news center. you were listening with us. what struck you? >> we know a bit more about the suspect and a bit more of the chronology of how this happened. the suspect is a 29-year-old man. he reportedly, which was confirmed by the police commissioner, at some point he yelled allahu akbar before this ensued. he was shot in the abdomen by a police officer. he is in custody. 8 people died and 15 people were hurt in this terror attack. we understand their injuries are serious, but not life threateni threatening. we also know the suspect was holding a bb gun and a paintball gun. you heard the mayor and the police commission er mentioning
that after he was chased, he slammed into a school bus injuring two children and two adults. he got of hissen rented home depot truck holding that bb gun and that other gun and that's when he was shot in the abdomen. police telling us also that he fired six shots using one of those guns and drove that truck the wrong way on that bike path there along the west side highway killing at least eight people. we also know, again, that suspect targeted a school bus with two children, two adults on board. they were also injured. that suspect was then shot by a police officer after jumping out of the truck and then holding that pellet gun and bb gun. so right now, police still trying to learn as much as they can. here's a live look from the scene. you can still see police surrounding that pickup truck in question, that rented home depot truck. mayor de blasio talked about the
incident saying the city has been tested before and it certainly will overcome this attack. >> this was an act of terror. and particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians. we have been tested before as a city very near the site of today's tragedy. and new yorkers do not in in the face of these kinds of actions. we'll respond as we always do. we will be undeterred. >> officials say there's no evidence to suggest an ongoing threat or this is part of a wider scheme. you heard it was a lone wolf attack. they are also warning everyone in new york city to remain vigilant, especially with it being halloween and many people will be out on the street. in fact, every halloween there is a very large parade where
hundreds of thousands of people line the streets, not too far away from where this terrorist incident happened. so certainly that parade route will be heavily guarded as thousands of people are expected as they are are every year to watch that parade go through lower manhattan. here again is a live picture of that pickup truck and police officers still surrounding that area. crews are now head ed to the scene and we'll have live reports from new york as the story continues to develop. live in the breaking news center, drey clark, nbc 10 news. i imagine those crews out there, the police officers that you see intures and the fbi that they will be out there for quite some time. some of the call. you heard that from the commissioner. was he arrested before.
they will be looking at video from the area. probably traffic camera video. and then the question was asked where did he rent that home depot from. what location was that specifically and they will probably look at that surveillance video too. >> you have worked in the new york market for several years. we keep hearing these references to 9/11. this is not too far away from that. it's going to bring up memories. >> living in new york city, you live with the constant sense of awareness, what your surroundings. if you see something, you say something. almost certainly, this happening bring it mind for a lot of people there when 9/11 happened. this is a city where when you live in new york city, you understand it is a very large target. you heard the mayor and the governor mention that.
this is that bike path. in fact, on days like this, you'd see tourists walking or jogging or riding their bikes. very popular because it's next to the hudson river. this had the potential to be even worse than what it is and make no miska neighborhood. but it had the potential to be even worse because you also had a school in the area. this happened at around 3:00 right around the time when school is letting out.
the video came from a student who was leaving school as it was happening. the potential was there for this to be even worse than what it is. but this will be a massive investigation involving multiple agency ises. the only good thing coming out of this is the fact that police have established that this was a lone wolf attack. that puts some at ease, but people will be individual will not and watching their surroundings. that's what new yorkers are told to do when you live in new york city. you understand it is a very big city it is a city that certainly terrorists have been targeting for years. >> not too long ago during the news conference, a lot of the folks are praising the officers, praising the responders. that officer that shot the suspect, the first responders that were on the scene in minutes trying to save lives. >> it's a tragedy that resinates
not only in new york city, but philadelphia police. we have been made aware they are coming out and making sure that they speak with us here. in fact, he might be talking right now down at philadelphia police headquarters about our city's preparedness. but again, we want to make sure that we put out there that governor cuomo in new york seemed very confident that this was a lone wolf attack and there is no problem, no immediate threat at least in the future. >> want to go now to mitch blacher who is in sky force 10 live above the scene in new york city. you have a a different vantage point. what are you seeing? >> we have over lower manhattan. you're getting a look at that massive police response.
the joint terrorism task force on scene. if we can zoom out, we can give you a vantage point of where the bike path of where the pickup truck drove down colliding only with the school bus. that's the bike path and pedestrian path along the hudson river. people who fbi and new york police department, joint terrorism task force, all on scene here. pretty much locking down this section of lower manhattan. >> some technical issues with his shot.
>> how far this 29-year-old was able to drive from there along the hudson. >> the pickup truck went down. we're trying to figure out how long this spans. >> that particular bike path stretches ten miles from lower manhattan all the way up to the george washington bridge. which was the neighborhood that i lived in for four years. it's a very long path. you mentioned just how long he was able to drive on that path. it happened so quickly. by the time they realized what this guy was doing. unfortunately, it was too late
for those eight people who were killed and dozen or so people now at the hospital being treated for various injuries there. they also gave some perspective on how the close the bike path is to the hudson river. very popular among both bicyclists and pedestrians. it stretches from battery park, low er manhattan, all the way u to washington heights as well. but this is a very popular area and on a beautiful fall day like today, it's just horrible that something this ugly would happen and so many people lose iing th lives there in the city's tribeca neighborhood. >> we keep looking at this live picture here. this is the very bike path where it happened where this truck mowed down seven or eight bicycles there with people riding on them. if you're just joining us, we're
