mets championship chase beginning with highlights from otis livingston. >> reporter: it has been a long nine years since the mets were in the post season. a gut check 3-2 victory in los angeles lasted night. there isn't an mvp in the division series but if there was, it would be murphy's law, taking home the hardware. the mets struck first. the catalyst was daniel murphy. first he drove in curtis grandson, with a double. this time he used his head and legs. luke is due to walk. he sees the defensive shift to right field and runs all the way to third. it was key he scored on a no sac fly. >> always trying to find an edge. sometimes it doesn't work but tonight it worked. >> murphy not done. >> swing and a drive deep down the line. there it goes. daniel murphy a homerun. >> i got a liter finally in the spot that i was looking for. and fortunately i didn't miss it.

for the games this weekend. dry but definitely feeling more like november than october. outside right now, doesn't feel that bad. we have clouds pushing through, affiliated with a weak front. 56 in the city, light rain possible north and west. absolutely. we'll take it. we need it. showers likely fall apart and weaken by midday. and then we see yeah that cold air settle in. it is all just waiting. waiting in the western wings to take over. today's numbers really not too bad actually, a little bit above normal. mid-60s. some folks may actually be in the upper 60s. the city right around 66 with clouds giving way to a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon. get ready for the chill this weekend. i couldn't even get out oft lincoln tunnel. what else is going on meg baker? still early a few changes to reported. brooklyn the westbound belt parkway is closed for construction between flat bush avenue and nap street.

police investigation of a customer injury. uptown 6 trains running from 138th street to park chester. due to a train with mechanical problems downtown ftrains are street. metro avenue trains terminate at bergen street and alternate side parking is in effect chris, mary. players are scheduled to arrive back in new york around 6:00 this morning and set to hour later. andrea grimes joins us live from the stadium. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you chris and mary. the team is in the air right now and it is a great morning for fans. do you think they even slept last night? totally debatable. they were not on the edge of their seats for this game five but pretty much out of their seats the whole game. met fans went nuts last night. >> the new york mets have won the series.

>> reporter: when their team finally clinched the national league division series. >> amazing. great. >> my heart was pounding the whole time. >> reporter: diehards found it hard to stay calm with the entire season on the line. it came down to a decisive game five on the road in los angeles. the mets came out on top with a razor close 3-2 win. >> amazing. this is the greatest time of the year and the mets are wonderful. they have such a great team this whole season. >> the team went crazy in the locker room with their champagne celebration. >> incredible. incredible. you look at team wins and this win. >> this makes the whole process that much better and sweeter. it is tough not playing, but this makes up for it all. >> reporter: now it is on to

the cubs tweeted last night, see you soon mets. >> >> reporter: so much is made about long suffering met fans. they are thrilled but the cubs have not won a world series, get this, since 1908. so a opportunity of fans thrilled on both sides. game one of the championship series tomorrow night right here at citi field. reporting live this morning from flushing, andrea grimes. drought. as the mets continued to chase the world series championship, stay with cbs-2. we'll have live coverage as they take on the chicago cubs. the suspect in a double murder in jersey city is in custody this morning and in the hospital. >> he was shot last night in a confrontation with police. janel has more. >> reporter: jose santos alvarez underwent surgery and is expected to make a full

recovery after the standoff with police. he is accused of killing his girlfriend and his own 4-year- old son. the week-long manhunt for the double murder suspect ending at this hackensack home last night. police surrounded the home just after 7:30 searching for jose santos alvarez. >> they had an arrest warrant, they were advised no one was in the apartment but as they went further they realized someone was in the back and it was, in fact, the suspect. >> reporter: santos alvarez accused of strangling his estranged girlfriend monica 30 toes any act and his son christopher. the search led investigators to this home at 170 clay street cornered the 26-year-old. santos alvarez lunged at officers with a knife and that is when one of the officers drew their weapon and fired. >> there were a lot of police officers in a very small

kitchen area one shot was fired to the abdomen area. i'm told, at this time, it is a nonlife-threatening injuries. >> reporter: investigators say a knife roughly 8 to 9 inches long was found at the scene. >> reporter: santos alvarez is facing murder charges this morning, police telling us two during that incident. they allegedly lied to police, telling them that no one was time. when the suspect was in fact inside. cbs-2 news. a bronx mother is charged with murder after police say she tossed her baby out of the 27-year-old tanisha farren dangled were 6-month-old out of the window in fordham heights and neighbors watched in horror as she dropped the baby girl six stories. the baby was rushed to saint pronounced dead. >> i just heard a thump.

started screaming no, no, no, no. and screamed. they were yelling at her don't do it. >> reporter: two other children, girls and a boy, ranging in age from 4 to 10 were inside the apartment at the time. the mother was taken to the hospital for psychiatric evaluations and later booked. developing now the california highway patrol says it could take most of today to reopen parts of an interstate swamped by mudslides in southern california. a river of mud flowed down a hillside 60 new orleans north of downtown l.a. the murder poured through local streets. on interstate 5, several hundred vehicles were left, authorities shut down a 30-mile stretch of the highway where the mud was up to five feet deep. one of joe biden's top political advisors says biden will soon decide on whether he will run for president. former senator ted kaufman sent a letter to senators saying biden will need their help if

wet weather. cool readings? oh yeah, more readings in the 40s. 45 in sparta. turn it around. 54 in white plains. 50s dominate for long island. look at edison though. usually a cool spot there. 40, one degree cooler than yesterday. on average you are a few degrees warmer with the exception of the hamptons. i think we'll be where we were yesterday. then a mix of sun and clouds, and still numbers a little bit above normal. the rain, right now is light in nature in parts of sullivan, ulcer -- and and all of this cool air waiting to come on down, will push through starting tonight. you really feel it saturday,

problems, downtown ftrains are running express from jay street, metro tech to church avenue and downtown gtrains terminate at bergen street. alternate side parking is in effect citywide. here's a quick look at some of the stories making news this morning. president obama has abandoned his plan to withdraw all troops from afghanistan. the president announced u.s. troop strength will remain at 9800 until late 2016 or early 2017. former house speaker dennis hastert has pleaded guilty or is expected to later this morning in a case stemming from allegations of sexual misconduct. it is unclear if the deal with prosecutors calls for prison time. in may he was charged with trying to hide large cash transactions as part of a payoff scheme and lying about it to the fbi. air force airman spencer stone out of a california hospital. stone was stabbed in a sacramento street brawl last

stopped an attack on a train in france. stock futures are mixed today after big gains on wall street yesterday. strong earnings report from companies like citigroup. the dow rose 217, the nasdaq added 87, the s & p 500 rose by over 29. in the housing market average fixed mortgage rates up slightly but still remain below 4% for the twelfth week. it is about .4% lower than it was this time last year. deliveries on ups, raising rates by 5% of the prices for freight delivery will go up later this month. rates for ground and air shipping will rise after the holiday delivery season on the 28th of december. the company needs to cover rising labor and equipment costs. ups will boost fuel surcharges, even though lower gas prices have benefited the company's bottom line. for the first time ever

way for college students who commute to school. carolyn reports from long island. when you calculate the cost of an education, millions of students have to factor in the cost of commuting. $300 a month for some on long island. add in tuition, books and food, natasha farren had to take out a loan just for our l i.r. r tickets. >> it is expensive. >> reporter: saddled with loans students make tough choices. >> i take the money and i could spend it on food and books but i have to spend it on the train and the bus. >> i have to cut back on food. i just bring food from home. >> reporter: a proposal to give commuters a lift. mass transit discounts nationwide. senator charles shumber dubs his proposal u trip.

would get increased federal funding. the cost? $250million a year, paid for, suggests shumber, by taxing companies that keep profits overseas. the results, he says, cars off the road, greener mass transit ride enters more college grads. >> the future of america is a well educated group of young people. if we don't have them we are not going to stay the greatest country in the world. >> reporter: the mta already provides discounts for new york city school kids and seniors. a spokesman says any additional discounts would create a new financial dilemma unless they were reimbursed from other sources. >> but federal dollars for college commuting, expect a debate in congress by year's cbs-2 news. >> the bill would award the extra funding only agencies that provide a college discount of 25% or more.

clear the smell of smoke from the building. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a jersey city man accused in the murders of his ex- girlfriend and her son is in the hospital this morning. >> police say he was shot when he attacked several officers. >> reporter: jose santos alvarez was shot and had to undergo surgery here at hackensack medical center. police had to surround him, swarming the building he was in, forcing him to surrender. >> reporter: the week-long manhunt for the double murder suspect, ending at this hackensack home last night. police surrounded the home just after 7:30, searching for jose santos alvarez. >> they did have an arrest warrant for the individual. they were advised that no one was in the apartment. but as they went further in the apartment, they realized someone was in the back and it was, in fact the suspect. >> reporter: santos alvarez, accused of strangling his estranged girlfriend and their

4-year-old son christopher inside of this jersey city apartment last wednesday. the search for santos alvarez led investigators to this home at 170 clay street in hackensack last night where police cornered the 26-year-old in the back of the unit. santos alvarez lunged at officers with a fly and that is their weapon and fired. >> there were a lot of police officers in a very small kitchen area one shot was fired to the abdomen area. i'm told at this time it is a nonlife-threatening injuries. >> investigators say a knife, rough live 8 to 9 inches long, was found at the scene. >> reporter: police say they made two other arrests during the incident last night arresting two women who they alleged were trying to hide the suspect inside of that home. reporting live this morning from hackensack new jersey, janel burrell cbs 1 news. a man accused in a hit and

where we should be if not a few degrees above normal. sun's up, 7:08. won't see that much of it. a little more sun as we work our way through the afternoon. a little warmer than it was yesterday but that is when the numbers start to tumble and it is the overnight lows saturday monday where we'll see the really low numbers. about. sullivan, parts of duchess county as well. now here's one part of the front, there is another little reinforcing blast of energy. so you could even see a shower later in the day or at night. but again, there is not a lot of moisture for this thing to work with. we see the skies getting better this afternoon, and then, it is going to be windy, cold, that is reinforced with even colder air for your sunday. so, overnight saturday interest sunday if you look around the area we will likely see numerous communities with subfreezing temperatures.

that means frost and freeze advisories will be posted. just giving you the heads up, it is going to be cold. 66 today, overnight you start to feel it 20% chance of a left over shower north and west. there is not a lot of moisture we are going to be dealing with, with this front. what it does though is, it pulls in that cold air. shower on sunday. well north and west, you can see a few flakes mix in with that. and then look at that. right back in the upper 60s to around 70 by midweek next week. let's keep your speeds around where they should be. what's going on meg? thanks john. quiet out there. the long island expressway moving well in both directions at post road and old west bury, no delays in nassau county. staten island expressway is moving well at the verrazano. now we have subway issues. downtown f trains running

express from j street metro check to church avenue. downtown g trains terminate at j street. they thought they were moving to get into a top rated school. but some upper west side families are learning a tough lesson. >> hazel sanchez tells us about a proposed rezoning plan that could shut them out. >> reporter: julie flanagan's daughter, rosie may only be 3 years old but this ambitious mom has her eye on public school 199. the flanagans moved to this upper west side apartment building just for a chance to enroll rosie. >> across the street from us is no longer zoned for 199. it made us pause and think well, if something happens to my husband's job, if we live this side of the street, 199 is still an option for us. if we cross the street it's not. >> reporter: the flanagans are far from alone. >> we sometimes have family

relocation just to get into the right zone. >> we moved across the street because we like the school. >> reporter: the 199 zone stretches from west 64th to west 71st and riverside boulevard to central park west. but the department of education is proposing to remove 11 blocks of that zone, including flanagan's block on 66th and riverside boulevard. those would be assigned to a new school under construction and nearby 191, a school recently labeled by the state education department as persistently dangerous. >> all of a sudden you are out of the zone. >> it is a scary thought. >> reporter: the local community education council will make the final call. some parents at 199 say it is necessary for their overcrowded school. >> as much as i feel bad for people that are going to get left out right now that is the only solution. otherwise, you know, same problem as the next year. a hearing on the school rezoning plan is scheduled for

a final vote will be made on november 19th. on the upper west side hazel sanchez. principals and teachers spoke last night, hoping to improve its dangerous reputation. happening today actor john stamos will be arraigned on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs in june. stamos pulled over for erratic driving. he was arrested and taken to a hospital for observation. in july he checked into rehab for treatment of substance abuse, stamos best known for his role on the sitcom full house was formally charged this week. actor randy quaid and his wife are free this morning, released from a vermont jail nearly a week after their arrest for trying to enter the u.s. from quebec. the judge ruled there was no probable cause to hold the couple in vermont. the quaids missed a california court appearance in 2010 on felony vandal charges. the quaids will now address those charges in santa barbara.

more. >> reporter: he is expected to survive, and the suspect will now face double murder charges. the week-long manhunt for the double murder manhunt ended at this hackensack home last night. police surrounded the duplex last night, searching for jose santos alvarez. >> they had an arrest warrant, they were advised no one was in the apartment. as they went further they realized someone was in the back and it was, in fact, the suspect, santos alvarez accused of strangling his estranged girlfriend and their 4-year-old son inside of this jersey city apartment last wednesday. the search for santos alvarez led investigators to this home at 170 clay street in hackensack last night where police cornered the 126-year- old in the back of the unit. he lunged at officers with a knife and that is when one of the officers drew their weapon and fired. >> there were a lot of police
