chaos in the middle of a crowded long island mall. shoppers run for cover after a gunman opens fire inside a store. good eveningk i'm kristine johnson, maurice is off tonight. cbs 2's jessica schneider is live at roosevelt field mall with details on today's shooting. >> reporter: yeah, christine, the mall has been packed with shoppers all night. it never shut down, even in the midst of that attempted robbery. tonight, even the security guard that's credited with taking down that would be robber, he was back inside, earning praise from his superiors. >> the security guard that tackled the guy? >> yeah. >> reporter: the security guard who foiled that attempted robbery seen with a bandaged right arm, but declining to talk about how he wrestled a

>> we didn't know what was going on. we all stayed in the back of the fitting room. the manager, he locked the door. >> reporter: shoppers recounted the chaos that unfolded at 1:00 p.m., much of it shared on social media. nassau police say an armed robber walked into the rolex section of the tourneau store. a bullet striking a mall employee in the shoulder. the suspect, seen taken away in handcuffs. >> the shooter was apprehended, and is in custody of the nassau county police department. they continue to investigate the matter as to whether anyone else may be involved. >> reporter: the brazen midday hold up happening in one of the nation's busiest malls, just three days before christmas. shoppers ran for the exits. >> some guy came running down the escalator, and was just like, there is a shooting. everyone started running toward the back of the store.

each other, running toward the parking lot. >> reporter: helping the security guard save the day. inspector kenneth lehr, an off- duty nypd cop who just happened to be christmas shopping. >> security person, i saw the detectives walking in the rolex store. what he did was remarkable. >> reporter: that mall employee who was shot was taken to the hospital in serious, but stable condition. the mall closed tonight at 11:00, but as you can see by the parking lot, there are still some shoppers staying until the very end. live in garden city, jessica schneider, cbs 2 news. we have some breaking news now. a police vehicle crashes head- on into a tractor trailer in morris county, new jersey. the accident happened around 8:00 at the intersection of corey lane and mendham lane in mendham.

in brooklyn tonight, a mother turns grief into action. dozens of people gathered in fort greene for a candlelight vigil in memory of pedestrians killed. residents and community leaders want safer streets across the city. they remember victoria nicodimas. she was walking along fulton street when she was hit by an suv. >> she was absolutely beautiful inside and outside. there's no doubt about it. she had the best work ethic. she loved emerging artists. she loved to support emerging artists. she loved beauty. >> the driver of the suv was charged with driving without a license. cell phone video captured dramatic pictures of flames tearing through a home in holmdale. no one was inside the house, because it was still under construction, but the homeowners were hoping to move in in about two weeks.

fakes, worth about $2 million on the street. fdny fire marshals are looking into a serious of false alarm pranks at a bronx high school. materials are deliberately pulling the alarms at herbert lehman school. local businesses say it also hurts sales when the kids show up to loiter and even break things. >> a lot of kids in the store, and they were fighting inside the store. this whole shelf was collapsed. they were playing with the wine bottles. they were picking up, and then they broke them. >> police say the problem has subsided since the school posted penalties for false alarms. anyone charged as an adult could get a $10,000 fine and up to a year in prison.

she is. in the hudson valley, mid-40s. him. 47degrees his note, i'm dreaming of a white christmas, i guess that's all it is. a dream. this year, my friend, it is just a dream. no way we can get a white christmas. fog has been an issue for us throughout the night. that will continue tonight and into the day tomorrow. we're at 59 degrees right now, calm winds, but that relative humidity is still very high. 62degrees. that was our high temperature today. 41 is the norm. so we're 21 degrees above where we should be today. still though, it's not a record. the record is 71 that we set back in 2013. your vortex satellite, and radar showing that the rain we had earlier, well offshore. now we just have residual cloud cover and some fog. but there is more rain on the way. we're looking to the gulf. this is the next rain. what happens is as we watch

moving up, we'll continue to have the warm temperatures. we'll see periods of rain. but the heaviest of rain is expected in the afternoon and evening hours. we turn on your future cast starting tomorrow 6:00 a.m., expecting clouds and even some fog. it looks like the rain holds off until tomorrow afternoon. we first start to see it, 1, 2:00 in the afternoon. more of the same as we head into tomorrow night. 9:00p.m., still looking at some lain. a lot of it light, but we'll see pockets of moderate and heavy rain. even some residual rain on your thursday morning. it's going to be a possibility. temperatures, of course, huge, huge story this week. forecast rainfall. not a ton. we certainly could use it. we have a significant deficit on the year. we're not going to get a ton of rain, but we'll keep it optimistic. tomorrow, despite the clouds and the rain. expecting a high temperature of 62 degrees. christine, here's a look at your seven-day forecast.
