take a closer look at the radar. notice where we have the rain. raining boston, southward, even worcester, you're dry. rain is to the west and to the north and it's going to continue to kind of move in this axis over the next couple of hours. so where it is raining here across southern new hampshire, it has been raining hard. we've actually seen some embedded thunderstorms as well, but the radar clear of any lightning right now. you can see, though, these heavy downpours around the orange area and just east. so this is shifting up towar we're talking about rainfall rates on the order of an inch, maybe two inches per hour. it doesn't sit over you that long, but can produce localized flooding. we have a flood advisory out this way for the next couple of hours or so. keep that in mind. this is all moving along a frontal boundary taking its time moving through. you see how we're reloading back through eastern pennsylvania? that's going to move in our direction as we get toward midday and into the afternoon. around boston this morning, a

roads up to the north, route 3, 93, 95 coming out of new hampshire. taking the trains, all lines starting the morning on time. emily, randy? >> thank you. breaking news on the eye this morning -- new information as police investigate this explosion that rocked new york city over the weekend. investigators are questioning several people right now. and this all came to a head late last night during a traffic stop. >> also, a troubling discovery in new jersey causes major disruptions on the rails, and the overnight developments. >> well, emily, we begin in new jersey where the mayor of elizabeth overnight said up to five devices in a backpack were discovered in a garbage can near the train station there. that was one of the devices unexpectedly being detonated as a bomb squad robot worked to disarm it. amtrak has suspended service between new york city and
amtrak says trains will get running as soon as it's safe. in new york, at least five people are being questioned by the f.b.i. in connection to saturday's explosion in chelsea. law enforcement officials confirming to abc news those persons of interest were taken into custody following a traffic stop in brooklyn. at this time, though, no one has been charged with a crime. it was saturday nighed when an explosive device blew up on 23rd street. a second just blocks away and cnn is saying surveillance video shows the same man. >> investigators also exploring the possibility that the blast in new york is linked to another in new jersey. abc news reports both explosive devices were set off by similar cell phones connected to them. that pipe bomb exploded on the jersey shore saturday morning shortly before a charity race to
terrorism experts are watching the investigations in new york and new jersey very closely. dr. leonard marcus says this is not textbook terrorism. he's certain investigators, visible and behind the scenes, have a handle on collecting the right evidence in new york. marcus is also certain law enforcement in boston and elsewhere are on heightened alert. >> this does evoke memories of the boston marathon bombings. again, there were there. pressure cooker bombs. so until we know for sure, we don't know if this was any kind of copycat attack. however, it certainly does raise red flags. >> marcus says terror organizations are more likely to take responsibility for an attack while that won't happen if a lone wolf carried it out. a f.b.i. is causing a mass stabbing a mass act of terrorism.
soldiers. the 22-year-old is identified as dahir adan. an off-duty police officer shot and killed him. all the victims of the attack are expected to recover. >> it's 5:06. a man is fighting for his life after a shooting in boston, and the eye's juli mcdonald at the scene. juli has new details in overnight. on the loose as police piece together what happened in this neighborhood. we know a man in his 20's was shot in the head and also in the upper body just after 10:00. it happened last night on pratt street right near the nightclub, garage. that victim then collapsed on nearby linden street. boston police tell "the globe" it happened after an altercation inside the club. the victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition. witnesses said they heard the

it, dust it off. we're not seeing too much around the boston area, but i think that's going to change. boy, do we need it. look at these rainfall deficits. area of extreme drought in red affecting a good portion of the state. look at this since midnight. look how much rain has fallen. we haven't seen anything boston south. orange, 1 1/2 inches since midnight. look at that, nearl where it has been rain, it comes down hard with the soupy air in place. because of that, we do have flood advisories through northern worcester county, including the orange area into southwest new hampshire as well. you can see why. the rain has been moving over the same area. embedded thunder and language as well. you could hear a rumble or see lightning this morning. lighter rains around portsmouth, getting back into heavier rain around manchester. you can see a couple of lightning strikes, one closer to
this whole area of rain is moving toward the north and east. we've got the heavy rain right now around new hampshire where we have that lightning strike. it is likely going to stay north and west of you in the nashua area. this has been where the rain has been coming down close to 2 inches per hour. it could lead to some of that power drainage flooding. all of this is lined up near a frontal boundary sitting off to the west. as this front shifts farther eastward today, we are going to see that axis of the rain get closer to the julia down here to the south. that is feeding some tropical moisture into this. certainly, you can feel it this morning. humidity reaching that oppressive level, especially near and south of boston with dew point temperatures up around 70 degrees. so stepping out this morning, it is warm and muggy. in the lower 70's for most of us. temperatures don't change a whole lot today with the clouds, the rain around. most of us stay in the mid 70's. that first area of rain winds down this morning. then it will fill back in.
reaching into boston early this afternoon. so keep that in mind for your lunch plans into the early afternoon hours. for the ride home, some rain around. things will wind down as we head toward this evening. in terms of how much rainfall we could see, it looks like the heaviest will be north and west of town where we could get additional rain. i'm expecting at lea least 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 inch in most areas. 60's tonight, still muggy. this front will stall in southeastern massachusetts tomorrow. that may early shower there. otherwise, we're drying it out and turning less humidity. humidity drops slowly. wednesday, thursday, we bring in fall, it's going to feel like it. then we see temperatures warming up back into the low 80's on friday. let's get you back to the roads. wet for some of us. >> mostly north and west, as you mentioned. be careful. not so much downtown proper. within that 495 belt, you're looking pretty good downtown.

parkway in brooklyn. nobody has yet been charged in saturday night's explosion in chelsea. nearly 30 people were hurt there. one man's day went from bad to worse. first he drops his phone in the water, and then he got his head stuck in a jetty trying to get it. firefighters in narragansett, rhode island, worked for 2 1/2 hours to free him on saturday. they couldn't use airbags to get him out because the rocks could shift too much. they went with a low-tech tool -- olive oil. hospital to be checked out for hypothermia. >> a little embarrassed. in your health -- a new warning about prescribing codeine for children's coughs and pains. the american academy of pediatrics has strengthened its advice against codeine for kids. the warnings come after reports of deaths and risk for dangerous side-effects that include breathing problems. the academy suggests doctors or parents use another remedy when possible.
general motors employees could go on strike at two canadian factories tonight. that deadline for a new contract with the company. the union is fighting for a long-term commitment from g.m. for future production at the canadian plants. the strike would affect engine and transmission factories which last year delivered power to 15% of g.m.'s vehicles sold in this country. asian shares, moderately higher overnight. right now stock futures here are also higher. investors are watching for outcomes of the federal reserve and bank of japan policy meetings, which are later this week. >> new this morning -- when it comes to selling a home, you might spend a lot of money making improvements to impress potential buyers, but there are steps that won't cost you anything. make an effort to depersonalize. the goal is to make the buyer feel at home, comfortable. for instance, take down sports memorabilia. experts say a seller's spirited support for their team might create a sour impression on a

i'm randy price. >> i'm emily riemer. we will have more on that in just a moment. cindy, kevin here. both of you tracking the impact of the rain today. >> yeah, most of it has been so far north and west of the boston area. so where it has been raining, though, it has been raining hard. you want your umbrella with you. because you can see it's kind of dry this morning around the boston area. as we get toward lunchtime and into the afternoon, there will be showers around and even a chance for a thunderstorm. so needed rainfall across the area, but you can see where it's been so far. hampshire. northern worcester county in the western part of the state as well. right now, we're looking at rain, embedded downpours. no thunder and lightning across southern new hampshire now, but we have had a history with some of these cells. heavy rain from warren to the leominster area. we're talking about close to an inch to two inches per hour. if we get the rain to come down that hard, there could be poor drainage flooding. there was a flood advisory up for that reason. there's a little bit more rain
that is going to work on in as we get closer to lunchtime. notice how the rain fills on in as we get toward lunchtime and into the early afternoon. that's when the rain may be heaviest around the boston area but still could be a shower toward the evening commute as well. be ready for it at any time today. let's get you out to the roads, see if that rain is causing any problems out there for your morning commute. kevin, how are we doing? >> so far so good. haven't heard of any problems up to the north and west along route 2 in the gardner stretch and up on the everett tu we are starting to see volume pick up here dark and early on the expressway, especially near columbia road. we'll go to the maps and farther south on 93 northbound. heavy again getting into that braintree split. that's your normal morning traffic. route 3 is picking up volume coming around that union street curvement up to the north, no real big troubles on 95, 93, route 3, 495 southbound. getting reports of a crash by route 3. be careful heading that way.

casler crashed his suv into the front of the restaurant. seven other people were hurt, including tony wilson. and he tells newscenter 5 he does expect to be here at today's arraignment where we hope to learn a little bit more details about this crash. live in woburn, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> sera, thank you. take a look at this. that is a shark coming very close to a boat off sandwich. experts confirm it is a great white. that shark was neck beach. the three men who took the video say the shark was between 10 and 15 feet long. they've been hitting the water together for more than a decade but they've never seen anything like that. and now they are rethinking some of their boating traditions. >> we're a little bit scared. we were taken aback. >> i was terrified. i saw john. >> 19 sharks have been tagged
>> just about 5:44. the eyeopener team ready with your news to go. several breaking developments, including more suspicious devices discovered, this time at a new jersey train station. >> we'll be getting to all of that. cindy watching rain. >> mm-hmm. a lot of you saying where? i don't have it at my house yet, but it's coming. you can see it down toward new york city. that's going to be working up in our direction. that gets h i think that's around the greater boston area. the rain chances ramp up. you can see that as we get toward noontime, even 3:00, 4:00, and the rain will taper off this evening. right now we are dealing with heavy rain through parts of northern worcester county, southern new hampshire. there's been some embedded lightning in this as well, but really it is just the rate of rainfall up over an inch per hour at times which has led to poor drainage flooding up this way. we're seeing those downpours right around nashua and up
all looking at heavy rain right now. this goes from gardner all the way down toward north brookfield. this cell will be lift north and eastward. heavier rain toward the top of the hour. there's more rain firing up, all along a frontal boundary. the rain is being enhanced by leftover moie that low is feeding into this as well. it's a very soupy air mass out the door with temperatures now in the lower 70's. mainly dry through midmorning in the boston area. notice how that rain fills in. we do hold in the mid 70's through the afternoon. you can see that on futurecast as the rain fills in lunchtime into the afternoon. till 4:00 or 5:00. as we get toward the evening hours, rain tapers off. clouds linger early tomorrow. and it may be a lingering shower in southeastern massachusetts as well.
much more comfortable by wednesday. let's get you out to those roads. a few problems, kevin. >> our first big problem spot of the morning. not here on 93 coming down through the somerville stretch. normal slowdowns towards the lower deck to get downtown. everybody's in decent shape. let's go to the maps though. up to the north, our trouble spot is 495 southbound. got a multivehicle crash taking most of the lanes out. last i heard, just the right lane is getting by of that lowell stretch. keep that in mind. not affecting route 3. and 93 is getting busier through methuen. looking pretty good on 24. 93, heavy getting to that braintree split as is route 3, the expressway filling in quickly with those pockets. we'll call it 15, 20 minutes

people to remember the victims of opioid overdose. he wants to raise awareness about the dangers of these drugs. he wants people to remember the victims and stand with everyone recovering from opioid addiction. a humpback whale swimming freely after it was rescued off the coast of chatham off cape cod. it was entangled in fishing gear, a line through its mouth. they knife to cut into the rope. the whale was freed after 20 minutes. the center says the whale swam away quickly, which is a good sign that it's okay after this entanglement. >> lastly, i'd like to dedicate this to my father, who passed away on friday. and i'm so glad that he liked me, because his opinion was the
"veep" actress julia louis-dreyfus. she made that candid announcement about her father's death as she accepted the award for best comedy actress. louis-dreyfus broke a record. patriots quarterback jimmy garoppolo will miss at least thursday night's game with a shoulder injury. he suffered a sprained right shoulder during yesterday's win over the dolphins. he threw for three touchdowns before that injury sidelined him. he could be back in two years to start against the buffalo bills. >> part of the fake tom brady mystery has been solved as he takes off the mask. >> we know him. >> former patriots receiver welker behind the mask yesterday tailgating with fans. we've seen the creepy mask up pop up since tom brady him cannot be there. it's not clear whether welker was behind the mask for each appearance. >> it's startling. >> it's creepy. >> i'd rather look at wes welker. >> exactly! >> or tom brady. >> either one. absolutely. there you go.
just since midnight. over 1 1/2 inches of rain in orange. close to 2 inches in concord, new hampshire. from boston down to the cape, nothing, at least since midnight. that will likely change as we get deeper into this day. because we've had so much rain come down, poor drainage flooding the result. southwest new hampshire under a flood advisory until 7:30. see where the rain is falling right now? same areas here. worcester county. southern new hampshire. no lightning presently, but these storms have had a history of producing nashua area touching up toward epping, new hampshire. this cell is going to drift in. look at the heavy rain. one to nearly two inches of rain per hour. some of the rainfall rates. these are some really heavy downpours. this is tropical air. you can feel it when you step outside. remnants of what was julia feeding into this front. notice how the rain is filling in near new york city. that's going to lift northward as this front shifts eastward. we've got this sticky air in
temperatures and cells in the lower 70's. we'll top out in the mid 70's through the the afternoon as that rain begins to fill in as we get toward lunchtime and early afternoon. by the time your evening commute comes around, the rain is starting to taper off and it will slowly do that this evening. it may take a little longer into the first part of tomorrow and southeastern massachusetts. temperatures hold in the mid 60's. tomorrow we are back up into the 80's. that front stalls out. during the morning hours thro shower here in southeastern massachusetts, and then do notice as we get into the afternoon, clearing from northwest to southeast. humidity drops for your wednesday. and fall begins on thursday officially. and it is going to feel like it was sunshine and low humidity. so improvements coming, but right now we've got wet roads out there in spots. >> we've got some trouble up to the north here. not too bad on the mass pike towards the brighton stretch. we are getting reports of
