well, good morning. and welcome to news channel 8 today. >> our top stories this monday morning. a new storm for the record book. the historic blizzard dumped snow on the east coast. 30 people died. now the storm is over. the travel nightmares continue today, however. over the weekend, nearly 12,000 flights were canceled. airline passengers headed from miami to italy are waking up in new finland hotel this morning.

an emergency landing because of severe turbulence. seven people were hurt. all of the injuries were taken away in ambulances, the rest of the passengers were put up in a hotel for the night. return to grocery store aisles. blue bell ice cream makes its way back to the tampa area today. it was yanked off shelves because of a listeria outbreak. now if you are weird like me, and you like having ice cream on cold days and coffee on hot days. >> it is one of the cold mornings. so if you like coffee or ice cream, this is the day you should have it. you are below freezing now, so you have several hours where you will be below freezing. today, see all of this purple area, mainly just away from the coast, that is a frost advisory until 9:00. even if you're not officially

to get better soon. weekday mornings on i-275 northbound heading into tampa have turnedternal a nightmare for drivers. >> a lot of red lights. >> reporter: they stretch from downtown tampa to the pinellas county side. the traffic jam is part of the removal of a lane. >> we converted a lane into a through lane so that cuts down the capacity a little bit and it cuts down the space and time that people have to merge. >> reporter: this stretch of highway has shrunk from four lanes to three. but by mid february a new fourth lane will open and cut down on the backup, until then the traffic headaches will continue. >> it has not been good. i live in st. petersburg. it extended my drive-by 30 minutes. >> reporter: and a live look at 275 northbound this morning. as i mentioned, gene, things

it is 5:05 on this monday morning. detectives need your help finding who shot and killed a man. take a look at the surveillance here of the men police are looking for. we're told 31-year-old charles labor got into a fight walking through the parking lot of gravely he was shot. if you have information about the man in the black shirt and the red baseball cap call crimestoppers. and a deadly fire at a lickland living facility is under investigation this morning. flames broke out at the bella vista manor this weekend. firefighters are saying one person died, two others taken to the hospital for smoke installation. a major concern here, this building does not have a sprinkle system because it was built before it was a requirement. happening today, tampa

of floridas to discuss open gun laws. both oppose the laws. we expect to hear from the mayor and police chief ward following a meeting this afternoon. well, right now, the blizzard blanketing the eastern united states is affecting flights in our area this morning. >> what an incredible storm that was. many airports are resuming service today, but things are not back to normal just yet. lindsey is following the story for us live. so many flights are effected in our area. >> i checked with tampa international airline this morning. and a lot better than over the weekend, but cancellations in new york, and baltimore, and the washington, d.c. areas. altogether, nearly 12,000 flights were canceled over the weekend.

can you believe it? the snowflakes falling north of gainesville. and it forced shelters to open in many parts of the state. 5:08. bundle up the kids. >> yes. scrape the windshield this morning. there is a frost advisory for our area away from the coastline. now that's the bad news for us floridians because it warms up quickly. the sunny skies get us to 54 degrees at 11:00 this morning. that's what we were yesterday afternoon. and we keep warming up very quickly, 65 at 2:00. 67 at 3:00. very comfortable. it will not cooldown tonight. and 60 at 7:00. so temperatures topping our headlines how quickly the warms up throughout the day. and storms into the forecast on wednesday, wednesday night and most of thursday. it will be a little bit cooler.

this is part of the president's push to improve relations with southeast asia. 5:15 a manhunt is underway in california for three escaped inmates considered dangerous. the men got a hold of tools and cut thrown a screen, got to the roof and repelled four stories. authorities are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to their capture. a massive earthquake rocks alaska, but residents are waking up this morning thankful the damage was not worse. the 7.1 earthquake struck 160 miles southwest of anchorage, four homes were destroyed. no one was hurt. workers at a bowling alley in virginia are picking up the pieces after heavy snowfall caused the roof to collapse. wayne lanes has been around for 30 years. the roof buckled under the snow. the building is condemned.
