gmg and welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm candace mccowan in for gene. >> i'm gayle guyardo. after two weeks in court, the erin andrews lawsuit is starting to wrap up. arguments. the sports broadcaster is suing a man who secretly took nude videos of her in 2008. and the marriott for allowing him to book the room next door to hers. >> in hillsborough county high school brawl has some parents pointing fingers.

man handling her son when a fight broke out. the father is giving his side of the story. >> she said i slammed him and i tripped. you can clearly see me tripping over the kids sneaker. . >> the father is also saying the school resource officer didn't do enough to protect the teens. >> florida's largest outdoor expo and boat show kicks off today. this is a live picture from news channel 8's event at the florida state fair ground. it starts today at one and goes until sunday and today you can get in for free. so we all need to go out boat shopping because it will be a great weekend to get out there on the water ways. >> i have a feeling it will be very busy not only at the expo but then eventually out on the water ways. right now it is not quite as pretty. we have clouds, spotty little light showers right along i-4 coming out of hillsborough through polk county and a little batch of rain along the coast of sarasota. this is it. there is only about a 20% rain chance for the next two hours or so. by 8:00 this morning, all of the

process of watching this cold front slip through and once that happens, drier air, sunny skies very nice. 74 degrees, very comfortable with the lower humidity. at 5:38, i have an hour by hour look at the day today and then the eight-day temperature trend. work. into the week. we'll have pretty good weather and right now we have pretty good traffic. let's take a look. here is lutz. we have a collision here but it won't slow you down. it is on dale mabry highway and it is off to the side of the roadway. it is not in lanes. let's talk about the entrance ramle. this should be reopening within the next half hour. if you're driving through rat soon, 54th avenue south. the entrance ramp to southbound 275 is blocked until about 6:00 a.m.. last couple of days it has been the exit ramp. today it is the entrance ramle. we have another collision. this has injuries involved. northbound 275, right at the gandy boulevard exit but it is off to the side of the roadway.

your commute. that is a look at weather and traffic on the 8's and now back to candace and gayle. >> right now, tampa is moving closer to reducing the punishment for having small amounts of marijuana to just a fine. the city council voted 6-1 in favor of the change and 8 on your side's ryan hughes is live at city hall and ryan, how much of a change is this? >>reporter: candace, good morning, as it stands right now. somebody here in the city is caught with marijuana, they could go to jail, they could lose their license, they could if this proposed ordinance gets the green light it could be a slap on the wrist. this is one of the top clicked stories on right now. it is getting a lot of heated beyond. >> it is a plant. nature. parent.

still, as an adult, who is an addict. and he started in high school with marijuana. >> residents sounded off to tampa council members at a public hearing. some believe it is harmless and some say it ruined their loved ones lives they found police chief eric ward and bob buckhorn are in favor of the change. here is a look at what it would look like. under the proposed measure, people who possess 20 grams or less would be issued a $75 fine for the first offense. $150 for the second, and offenders would pay $450 for each offense after that. now, again, this is not a done deal at this point. the council must approve the ordinance at a meeting scheduled for march 17th. candace, this is something we'll certainly keep on top of and it is certainly a controversial issue here and in other places as well. >> and quite the talker, ryan, thank you. in your vote this morning, #gopdebate is trending to twitter right here in tampa four republican candidates attacked

ground ahead of the next republican primaries that will take place tomorrow. >> right off the bat. donald trump responded to the news of the day about mitt romney's attack on his character. >> senator ted cruz and marco rubio focussed on trump but ohio governor john kasich struggled to get a word in. lindsey mastis is joining us with the morning alert. a lot of people are talking about the debate and it was a doozy. >> it really was. i've been monitoring stats on social media all morning. i want you to look at this. it shows that donald trump is on top, just dominating online when it comes to conversations. he has more than 60% of the conversation on twitter. the rest of the candidates are hardly getting mentioned when you put this all in perspective. the most tweeted moment came during an exchange between senator rubio and trump. both are accusing each other of being con artists. >> and he is trying to con people into giving them the vote.

senator marco rubio who was elected in florida and who has the worst voting record in the he doesn't go to vote. he is absent. he doesn't go. now, the people of florida can't stand him. he couldn't get elected dog catcher. >> the name calling continued throughout the fox news debate. the candidates are picking up followers online now because of at the stats. you can see here on twitter, trump is on top of that as well followed by governor john kasich, juror cruz, senator rubio is at the bottom of the follower growth. that doesn't necessarily mean votes and that is why they're using social media to get their messages across. it will be important as well as we head into another primary. that is coming up tomorrow. right now, we want it know who you think won the debate. we have a poll on the website, i also have one on twitter and right now the results are coming in, 42% think that donald trump won followed by governor john kasich with 28%.

a man from egypt threatened to kill the billionaire and is facing deportation. the 23-year-old student lives in los angeles right now while studying to be a pilot. police say the student posted on facebook that he would be willing to kill trump and the world would thank him. secret service agents arrested the egyptian. his deportation hearing is scheduled for today. long lines are building up at the irs office in tampa the agency is promising 8 on your side to send more employees to help fix this problem. senator bill nelson and congressman kathy castor are asking the irs commissioner to step up to the plate. here is what the problem looks like. it is pretty bad. victims of identity theft are showing up to the office to prove who they are and they're the ones that end upstanding in line for hours, even days much the irs is partially blaming budget cuts for the staff shortage. 8 on your side will stay on top of this to let you know when a solution is reached. the time right now is 5:38

a little bit of rain out there. not much. >> and getting less and less as we speak. i talked about that. let me show you what the radar looks like right now. can't even seen the rain. i'll sxoom in here north of lakeland where we had heavier rain it is dwindling. you might get a sprinkle. it is disappearing as we speak. same thing along i-75 in sarasota. so i left in a 20% rain chance by 8:00 a.m.. it may end all before that and then we see the skies clearing out. we warm up nicely. 70 at 11:00 a.m.. 72 at one. 74 at 3:00 p.m. and by that point it is sunny, the humidity is low. there is a nice breeze and it cools down to 64 degrees at 7:00 p.m.. hopefully you're able to get out to some of the spring training games. there is a lot going on today. bradenton, lakeland, dunn eedin. low to mid-60's and plenty of sunshines.

. a dangerous situation caught on camera check this out. new police dash cam video shows a shoplifter driving off dragging police officers. in south carolina, officers stopped an suv of two suspected shoplifters. the driver got back into her after questioning and started driving away with two officers hanging on.

an officer shot the driver in the arm and she was arrested. she is now charged with shoplifting and hit-and-run. officers were treated and released from the hospital. icy roads in new england are making things treacherous not just for drivers but first responders as well. a police suv flipped on the side in vermont when it slid off of the slick road. the suv starts rolling back and toppled over a hill. fortunately, the chief was not hurt. >> it was a little bit scary. you don't know what is going to happen and i was comfortable that i was not going to get hurt. >> the police chief was able to drive the suv back to the station after the crash. pinellas county investigators are taking new steps to solve cold cases and it means you'll start seeing new billboards going up. seven of them are being placed near old crime scenes.

crimestoppers award for help solving the cases. this is close to the home to where two were murdered in january of 2015. another case involves 15-year-old malaysia gamble. she was found dead in a vacant lot in st. petersburg in 2009. her mother tells us it still hurts. >> i waited seven years to be able to get in front of this camera and let the world know what my daughter meant to me malaysia was a good person. >> the new billboards are being donated by clear channel outdoor and will be put up over the next two months. reality star caitlyn jenner is throwing support behind ted cruz asking to be his transambassador. senator cruz is a great constitutionalist and articulate man.

now, this event will be going on all this week and we'll show you the time so you know when you can come out here to the florida state fair grounds. the doors open today at 1 o'clock fort first time. they will close at 8:00 tonight and by the way, today it is entirely free for the entire family. this weekend on saturday and sunday, the doors open at 10:00 in the morning. they will close at eight tomorrow night. five on sunday evening. $8 to get in for adults. i'm sorry, no charge for children who want to get in here this weekend so it is quite frankly an opportunity for the whole family to come out to the florida state fair grounds. come to the expo hall jam packed with all sorts of outdoor gear for folks to enjoy, see, and maybe buy as if they choose to do so. >> interesting. thank you so much. they're calling it the expedia of healthcare. it is a new way to combat the sky rocketing doctor bills that we all deal with. much like the way you search for cheap flights, hop on the

>> that's right. it is looking good for the weekend but we have to go through a little bit of rain this morning. although, i can make the rain disappear. it was heavy rain around lakeland. all gone. still watching some sprinkles around the venice area in sarasota. but that is basically it. by 8:00, the rain is out, 64 degrees. still mild and still cloudy at that point. once the cold front comes through between eight and noon, breezier from the northwest, clearing skies. 71 degrees and just the fantastic spring like 74-degree day in the afternoon. notice we're getting cooler air in inverness. you're at 54. the cold front is pushing through as we speak. the rain that never reallyed in to lakeland. 63 degrees right now. 63 in wimauma. there is the cold front bringing slightly cooler and less humid air to the north as it pushes the showers down to the south. northwest breeze this afternoon

breeze but in the sunshine it is nice and warm. that is the perfect spring weather. seasonably cool in the morning. there will be a chill but then emoji man has his shades on saying it is pretty comfortable. beautiful weather for saturday afternoon, sunday afternoon and only slightly warming up next week. what about traffic on the 8's? >> we're moving at good speeds overall. no significant slow downs on the interstate. i want to remind you that the 54th avenue area south entrance ramp should be opening up at any moment. don't worry about that. it should be reopen by the time you get there. by chance it is still closed. take 22nd avenue south to access southbound 275. we have a good drive across the sky way bridge and also good drive on the gandy bridge. collision northbound 275 at the gandy boulevard exit. injuries involved but it is off to the side of the roadway and taking a quick look here at travel times. six minutes across the howard frankland bridge. 10 minutes courtney campbell. that is a look at weather and

. a tough day on the water for america's sailing team. the two time defending champions capsized during training. you can see six sailors on board during a practice session. take a look at the 45-foot catamaran on the side there. it was eventually put upright and sailed back to the dock. the crew is practicing for the world cup in may. high. they topped the best winning streak after the win against on the. was they had a 4-1 win. this ends the consecutive winning streak to eight and they're two points behind the florida panthers in the atlantic division. the lightning hits the ice again tomorrow for a match up against the carolina hurricanes. it is time to get excited again. >> yes it is. weather and traffic on the 8's is three minutes away.

. it is 5:58. time to weather and traffic on the 8's. i'm tracking a cold front. it is a rather weak the one. i can only find a couple of light showers. all of this will be gone by lunch time. skies will be clearing out. it will be very comfortable with a light breeze. 74 this afternoon. a little cooler tonight down to 55 degrees. i'll have the weekend forecast coming up though. leslee, how about traffic on the 8's? >> if you live in lakeland and you commute into tampa no problems on i-4, here is a quick look at i-4 right near the polk parkway. traffic looks great. downtown lakeland is up to speed

. good morning and thanks for watching news channel 8 today. i'm gayle guyardo. >> i'm candace mccowan in for gene ramirez. our top stories this morning, tampa is moving closer to decriminalizing marijuana. the city council gave preliminary approval to a plan that would openly impose a small fine for those caught with 20 grams or less of pot. right now you can lose your driver's license. spend up to a year behind bars and be fined up to $1,000. a final vote is scheduled for march 17th. a showdown in mo town.
