good morning and welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm candace mccowan in for gene ramirez. >> and i'm gayle guyardo. our stop stories this morning, tensions run high as tampa police investigate a deadly shooting in south tampa. two people were shot at an apartment complex on south lois avenue. one of the victims is dead. the other one is recovering in the hospital at this hour. new this morning, we have learned both victims were inside a car when they were shot. hulk hogan is expected back on the stand today in the civil
hogan testified monday that he was, quote, humiliated when gawker published a video of him having sex. he is suing the website for $100 million. gawker's attorneys will get to cross examine him today. and good morning tampa bay. this say live look at the tampa skyline in downtown. we are in for a treat today. temperatures will reach 80 degrees. and leigh spann tells us it's going to be another beautiful sunny day in the bay area. good morning, leigh. >> good morning. and and yesterday we started out in the cool side. but we are warmer today. lakeland, winter haven, in the mid-50s. the cooler spot, 50 in inverness. 60 in braid on the. but look what a difference, five degrees warm -- bradenton. but look what a difference, five degrees warmer. so it should be fantastic weather for the strawberry festival. at 3:30, the golden boys. trace atkins at 7:30. and already feeling great at 10:00 a.m. when the gates open, 69
82 in plant city with the warm, sunny afternoon, put the sunscreen on. during trace at kin, mild and 71 degrees. in weather and traffic on the 8s at 4:38, i have the eight- day temperature trend to see how warm it gets. morning. >> yeah, definitely. unfortunate news in polk county with a fatal accident and it's tying up lanes. this is in the lake wales area but it's on highway 60 which is the biggest road in lake wales along with u.s. 27. this is westbound highway 60 at evergreen. you can see some color changes on the map. let's go to meliek on the street and he's live. you can see the cones in the roadway. and traffic, these trucks are actually headed westbound. because all of the westbound lanes are closed. and that ambulance is headed eastbound. you're looking at eastbound lanes and they have got westbound traffic sharing those lanes because of all of the westbound lanes being closed.
traffic is so light. but if it's still going on closer to rush hour, we will see delays. a fatal crash here, highway 60, all westbound lanes closed at evergreen. and now back to can gas and gayle. >> all right, thank you, leslee. right now, -- candace and gayle. >> all right, thank you, leslee. look how emotional neighbors became after police investigated. it puts things in perspective here. and now the search continues for the person or people who pulled the trigger. we followed this story as newscast. and news channel 8's lindsey mastis is live from the scene where she is asking for updates. so lindsey, any arrests yet? >> reporter: well, i talked to tampa police this morning and they tell me, no arrests yet. and i asked them how many shooters were involved and they said, at this point, they're either. one man is in the hospital.
injuries that are not life- threatening. the other man did lose his life. and this all began at this apartment complex. police say both of the victims were in the same car when another car pulled up and shots rang out. and this entire scene ended about two miles away from here. and we want to show you the video again, a large crowd gathering in the neighborhood after the shooting. emotions ran high. i want you to take a look at this. you can see a man so upset, he tries to cross the police line. and police have to take him down to keep that from happening. and investigators believe that these men were targeted because of some type of ongoing dispute but right now, police are not releasing the victims' names. and now in part, they still have to notify the family of the man who lost his life here. as soon as we get more information about who the victims are and also a description of the shooters or if there's any arrest, we will
>> thank you, lindsey. happening today, the hulk hogan trial against the website gawker back on. this morning, the former pro wrestler will take the stand again in his lawsuit over the release of the sex tape that news channel 8's josh thomas is petersburg. and josh, a lot of people are watching to see what happens here. >> reporter: yes, indeed, they are watching and waiting to see exactly what happens next. now hulk hogan is expected to return to the stand today in the trial against gawker. now he is suing the website for $100 million. and following opening statements yesterday, hulk take the stand. he told the court that he had a friendship with the shock jock and his now former wife. she is the woman seen in the tape with hogan. he testified that he was aware that they had a security camera inside their home but he didn't
he claims the tape's release ruined his reputation. >> i was embarrassed what it did to me as a person. but it was even embarrassing as a character. hulk hogan was embarrassed. >> reporter: now attorneys for the website gawker claims they have a right to publish the tapes since hogan is a well- known public figure. those attorneys are expected to cross-examine hogan on the stand this morning when the trial resumes herer in st. petersburg. the trial is expected to last up to three weeks and you can count on news channel 8 to have the latest developments on this ongoing trial. >> yeah, a lot of people watching to see what happens here. josh, thank you. new this morning, at least 14 people are injured after the derailment of this commuter train in california. take a look at the images. you can see one of the cars fell into a creek. the train was traveling from central california to the san
passengers say the experience felt unreal. >> just shifted the gravity all of a sudden and we were all just panicking. one member was just under the mud slide so we were trying to dig her out while the train was hanging. >> none of the injuries life- threatening. authorities believe the tree knocked the train off its rails. heavy rains may be to blame for the fallen tree. this morning an 8 on your side consumer alert. now it's getting serious. deputies have removed credit card skimmers equipped with blue tooth technology in sarasota county. they were found at a mobile station at the corner of cattleman and fruitville roads. they were being accessed remotely. officials believe that the skimmers may have been there for two weeks. if you have purchased gas there, you will want to check your statements or call your bank. this morning, we're hearing
about how she escaped from a man who attempted to kidnap her. it was all caught on surveillance video. the driver stopped and asked her if she was walking home from school and the child ignored him. you can see her running away. she says the man turned around and stopped the vehicle. and he approached her from behind her and grabbed her. the child's quick thinking and her backpack probably saved her life. >> he grabbed me around my waist and wrapped his fingers around. i was pulling his wrist, like away from each other. and that's when, like, i guess he gave up and i just kept running. he ran back to the car. >> some quick thinking right there. she was in tears, as you can imagine, when she reached her aunt's house. deputies are still looking for the would-be kidnapper and have released this sketch of him. the time routh now is 4:38 on this tuesday morning. going to be a great day. >> going to feel very comfortable throughout the day.

in your vote, this is decision day for residents in four states. today's biggest race, michigan. polls there will open in less than three hours. democratic candidates have been heavily campaigning in that state. they're battling for a total of 148 delegate while republicans have 59 delegates at stake. democrats hillary rodham clinton and senator bernie sanders appeared on fox news channel for a town hall in detroit monday night. senator sanders was the first to take questions. he stressed that he is determined to win the nomination. while clinton responded to michael bloomberg's announcement that he will not be seeking a run for the presidency. other states having primaries today, mississippi where republicans have 40 delegates and democrats have 41. registered republican voters in idaho and hawaii will also head
time now is 4:44. despite the importance of the primary, candidates have all eyes on florida and your vote. just today alone, senator bernie sanders will hold a rally in miami. donald trump will hold a press conference in jupiter. and senator marco rubio will campaign in sarasota. on wednesday, there's a democratic debate in miami. news channel 8's keith cate and myself will be there. that will be followed by the republican debate in south florida that is on thursday. now all candidates know the importance of the florida vote. just take a look at these numbers from a new university poll here in florida. 30% of likely gop primary voters back florida senator marco rubio. that's eight points behind donald trump. while senator ted cruz has 17% support. well despite the number, senator rubio is not slowing down. his campaign tour will continue to crisscross the state today. there's a rally in sarasota at the dolphin aviation hanger at 5:00 p.m. senator rubio was in tampa
turning point is coming and it starts here in florida. well before the rally, he told me he is not giving up. >> i'm going to be on the ballot. we're going to win florida. this is going to be a very long process. you guys have never covered a campaign like this. this is unchartered territory. no one, not even donald trump is on track to have the delegates. >> senator ted cruz has a key endorse. in a contested state. the mississippi governor announced monday that he is endorsing senator ted cruz for the republican nomination. he urged the people of mississippi to the stand behind senator cruz today. before landing today in florida, front runner donald trump held a rally in madison, mississippi. trump has won about 44% of the delegates so far. he still needs 853 delegates to secure the nomination. florida's primary is on march 15th. that is just one week from today. we want to remind you that early voting is going on right now.
you need to know on wfla.com. happening today, first lady michelle obama will deliver remarks in celebration of international women's day. the first lady will visit union market in washington, d.c. and speak to dozens of young girls as part of the let girls learn initiative effort. well, a suspect is in custody this morning after leading police on a wild chase in south carolina. take a look at that. police claim that the suspected trying to escape. view. he ran over stop sticks and barreled through two counties before the chase ended. shockingly, no one was injured during this wild chase. miles and miles of highway in houston were shut down for hours because of this. a naked woman dancing on top of an 18-wheeler. deputies responded around 9:00 a.m. to an unrelated call.

all has to do with high pressure. we like high pressure. it typically leads to dry conditions but around it, you get the southeast wind. and that's why we're seeing warmer this morning. some patchy clouds throughout the day but the wind gets us to 80. the other thing high pressure does is blocks any storm systems from coming in. unfortunately for the folks back in texas, the rain is going to stay there while our warming trend continues. our high today, 80 in winter haven. 80 in tampa. 80 in lakeland. all of us warmer tomorrow at 82. and 83 on thursday. leslee, let's check on traffic on the 8s. >> all right. as we continue to follow the breaking traffic in the lake wales araphic, again, a fatal crash -- wales area, again, a fatal crash right at evergreen drive. the westbound traffic is sharing lanes with the eastbound traffic. let's go to meliek on the street and you can see what i'm talking about as we look at this. the cars going by, you can see
