now at 5:00 on this thursday morning, the search is on for two gunmen who ambushed a party, they shot and killed several people inside. police in pittsburgh, pennsylvania report five people are dead. at least three others are in the hospital. well good morning and welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm gayle guyardo. >> and i'm gene ramirez. we start this hour with that backyard cookout that turned deadly in the state of pennsylvania. news channel 8's lindsey mastis is following the story from our tampa news center this morning. lindsey, good morning to you. this sounds like such a chaotic scene at a party.
opened fire from an alley behind the home and the shots continued as party goers tried rushing inside to get away. four men and one woman died and three others were hurt. this was an ambush-style attack. >> it looks like right now, they were all fleeing toward the back door of the residence when the second gunmen fired from the side of the yard. and they all seemed to get caught on the back porch. >> reporter: police have ballistic evidence that leads them to believe there were at least two shooters. right now, they're trying to figure out why the shooters targeted this party and so far, no arrests. the shooting is trending online here in tampa. and i am going to continue to follow the story and let you know as soon as we get an update. gene -- >> we will check back with you for more updates throughout the morning, lindsey. thank you. more breaking news, pinellas fire-rescue is blaming a hoverboard for a fire that started in clearwater.

down republican front runner donald trump. >> reporter: good morning. it was an interesting debate last night with the democrats and today it's all about the republicans. but if you will for just a moment go back to last night. a couple interesting things tossed around. you had the donald trump, is he a racist? and you had the normal give and take. and once again, bernie sanders bringing up questions about hillary rodham clinton's speaking fees and the way she is backed by wall street by the millions. and of course hillary rodham clinton saying, you know, you're going too far here but bernie sanders not letting up. $225,000 for a speech? maybe that's a speech we ought to hear. >> when you get paid $225,000, that means that that speech must have been an extraordinarily wonderful speech. >> so does this mean that you would not that -- >> and i would think that a speech so great that you got paid so much money for, you would like to share it with the american people.
think she's saying one thing in these speeches and another in public? >> that is exactly what releasing the transcripts will tell us. >> i think what sanders wants here is for the strains script to be release sod we can see if hillary rodham clinton is saying today what she said back then when she was taking big fees from wall street to speak to banks and so forth. >> reporter: that was one of the spicy moments of the debate. and one of the few spicy moments. we did talk to a political analysts. she is asking, hey, how much will this debate really impact voters? she is saying probably not much. we will have to wait and see. but still not a lot of help coming from bernie sanders probably from that performance. >> i would agree. i would think bernie sanders needs a knockout. frankly he wasn't. it was good but not enough. he is really trailing in the polls and it should be hillary rodham clinton's to win. she didn't do herself any harm last night. >> absolutely. >> and today, it's all about the republicans.

sanders will make a campaign stop at the florida state fairgrounds. but coming here fresh off the debate last night in miami, the republican candidates have also been busy trying to convince people in florida to vote for them. all four remaining republican candidates still in the race will square off later tonight in their own debate in miami. and now florida's primary is the next big prize in the race for the white house with the winner-take-all delegates. you can count on news channel 8 for the latest as the next round of presidential primaries winds its way through our >> okay. josh, a busy day here in the bay area. thank you. well, jeb bush is getting back into the fray of the presidential race. the former florida governor is meeting privately with all of the remaining gop candidates trump. now speculation is growing that he is trying to strengthen ongoing efforts to bring down the gop front runner donald trump.
this thursday morning. brian, how are we looking weather-wise today? well, we're looking like it's going to be a warm day. right now, temperatures in the lower to middle 60s. dry weather, just a few clouds floating through the sky. so another nice looking day. again, we can see a few clouds trying to make their way through. not completely sunny but a good looking day. this morning, temperatures in the 60s by 11:00 a.m. 75 degrees. so warming up quickly. if you decide to bring a light jacket this morning, you're not going to need it by about 11:00 a.m. this afternoon, partly cloudy skies and warm, a high degrees. our record is 87. not quite record warmth but definitely on the warm side. how act traffic on the 8s? at 5:08, still checking in accident-free. that's awesome. and we have ongoing construction, university at 75 closed for the next little bit there in the lakewood ranch area.

saturday until today, we've had 48 calls. >> this is scary. a big concern for paramedics and doctors trying to treat the patients is that drug dealers keep changing the ingredients. but no matter what is in it, using spice is against the law. buildings blown to pieces in seattle. and now nine firefighters are recovering after this massive explosion. they're back home from the hospital after suffering minor injuries. but the gas leak explosion sent debris flying into city street, shattering windows two blocks away. some neighbors say it sounded like an earthquake. a jacksonville narcotics detective is lucky to be alive after being shot while taking his son to school. the plain clothes detective tried to pull a person over. they say the 19-year-old man shot the detective three time, once in the head. fortunately the detective who works undercover was wearing body armor and survived. his son immediately called for help. that triggered a chase.
and reported that he was holding a gun, refusing to stand down and that's when officers opened fire. the teen survived and is facing a number of charges this morning. now we never like to laugh at people who are sick but this one might make you chuckle. it's a bizarre sickness spreading among west virginia lawmakers. some are blaming it on raw milk. but the big question now, is it political pay back? well, that's what some suspect. listen to this. several lawmakers got sick after drinking raw milk to celebrate new legislation that loosened restrictions on raw milk. which could of course contain dangerous bacteria. and now health officials are investigating. they are trying to determine if the drink of milk is to blame. happening today, the white house will host the state dinner. canada's prime minister and his wife will attend dinner with the obamas. this is the second time the president and the prime minister have met. they hope to discuss issues such as climate change, the economy and energy.
mayor of st. petersburg will raise the flag for the fire stone grand prix at 10:00 a.m. the mayor will be there with verizon indy car driver and the owners of the grand prix. the ceremony takes place on the lawn of city hall. a small race that started in safety harbor has grown into thousands of runners lacing up to benefit all childrens hospital. the run is so big now, st. petersburg wants it to be held in the streets of its beautiful water-front city. i will be there when it runs in a couple of months. and i met one patient whose story just might make you want to take part. twinkle twinkle >> reporter: singing like a little angel, playing with her toy, 2-year-old chloe grimes lights up her room at all childrens hospital. the little girl is fighting a rare cancer. she's not alone.
gearing up to help chloe and other patients at ach. >> it's amazing. the overwhelming feeling of support in our community alone, i mean, everyone comes together and they all have the same goal in mind, to help kids like chloe and other kids that are battling these harsh diseases. and it's really an inspiration. >> reporter: these are pictures from last year's running for all children race organized by parents brian and terra powers. they lost a twin but their other twin is now receiving care at all childrens. >> she is now a thriving, rambunctious 6-year-old little girl. >> you need to focus on the things that you do have and not the things that you don't. it's a great opportunity just to say thank you for what we do have. >> reporter: race race medical director believes community support is key to the hospital's success. >> we are a large city hospital in a relatively small city and
live around here, the people that have grown up in the area and donated the money, that's why we're here. >> all right. there is still time to sign up for the race being held on saturday, the saturday of mother's day. and now i have put all the information for you on wfla.com. this is a usa track and field certified 5 and 10k run. and i will be there for the one- mile fun run. my husband and kids are going to join me. it's going to be a lot of fun. already 3,000 people are expected to attend. >> wow. i love that they're doing it on mother's day weekend, a great way to celebrate with mom and the whole family. there's one thing i have learned from the stories i have done with all childrens, they try to make the experience better for the entire family. not just the child at the hospital but everyone is welcome to be there. >> and the kids will be there. a lot of the patients will have the chance to line the streets and watch the runners there for them. >> what a way to motivate the runner. got to finish the race.
