live from the news center, this is news channel 8 today. good morning and welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm candace mccowan in for gene. >> i'm gayle guyardo. breaking news, three people are dead after a car crashes in sarasota. right now a fourth victim is in the hospital. this is a picture from the scene at the intersection of old bradenton road and desoto road. so far police do not know what caused the single car crash but they do believe speed was a factor.
way to the scene and we'll have updates on this breaking story throughout the morning. right now let's turn things over to leslee lacey. >> a triple fatal accident. the police department believes that speed was a factor. use some caution on the road ways today. here's what is going on, university parkway is completely blocked between old bradenton over to desoto. so this is actually just west of u.s. 301 when university curves down to the south. it's also just south of the airport. this is the airport. so it's at that tail southern end of the sarasota airport. so university is completely blocked there. because of where it's blocked also part of desoto road is blocked there as well. you're alternate is down here at myrtle street. not exactly an easy alternate. you have the airport to the north, myrtle street is an alternate to the south. you shouldn't be able to use desoto road.
it's a triple fatal. it's quite unusual to hear that. sad news. we have a fourth person that's at the hospital. so hopefully that person is going to be okay. >> very sad. hopefully people will know and can move around the area so they aren't impacted by it. this morning when you leave out of your house you will notice that it's significantly colder. 52 right now inverness and weeki wachee, in polk county we're still getting the cold air arriving, 55 lakeland, 60 in wimauma. the winds are howling out of the north at 21 miles per hour in clearwater, 13 in lakeland, gusting up in most places more than 20 miles per hour. that's helping to clear the skies out. it will keep us feeling like a winter day today. a high of only 66 degrees. plus the wind making it feel even colder. at 4:38 in weather and traffic on the 8s we have an 8-day temperature trend to let you know how long it's going to stay this cool. >> thank you, leigh.
-- top stories, a near by by another wrong way driver. this morning the driver is out on bond after almost hitting a tampa police officer head on on i-275. this comes days after a hillsborough county sheriff's deputy was laid to rest. deputy john kotfila was killed by a wrong way driver on the selmon expressway. president obama is waking up in cuba this morning. today the commander in chief has a busy day ahead of him. he will meet with cuban president raul castro. in just a few minutes how tampa is playing an important role in this historic visit. the search continues for the driver in a deadly hit and run accident over the weekend in tampa. that driver did not stop when he hit a bicyclist in south tampa saturday night. police closed inner bay boulevard in both directions at 6th street south for several hours. >> once we arrived on scene unfortunately we did find that subject was deceased and
>> now police are interviewing witnesses and checking for surveillance videos. anyone with information is asked to call tampa police. in your vote, more threats against presidential candidate donald trump and his family. a threatening letter was sent to trump's sister who is a judge in philadelphia. this as we continue to see violence at his rallies. saturday a protester was killed out of a rally in arizona. >> there's a disgusting guy that puts a ku klux klan hat on. >> moments later the man in the crowd attacks another protesters punching and kicking him. >> senator ted cruz campaigned in arizona this weekend. he asked trump supporters to reconsider saying hillary clinton will win the election if trump is the nominee. governor john kasich dismissed calls to drop out to swing votes cruz's way.
>> bernie sanders is looking ahead to saturday's primary in washington state. he spoke to a crowd in vancouver near the oregon border. crowd often drowned him out in cheers and boos when he targeted his democratic opponent hillary clinton. >> we need real change in this country and between you and me i do not believe that real change is going to come from a candidate like secretary clinton who receives millions of dollars from wall street. >> in arizona former president bill clinton stumped for hillary with former congresswoman gabby kelly. today president obama will castro. >> it's a historic moment because it's the first time in nearly a century that a sitting u.s. president is in cuba. news channel 8's lindsey mastis is following this story from our tampa news center. tampa is this historic visit.

happening today, a vote that could ease the headache of hundreds of drivers looking for a space at one of sarasota's most popular tourist today commissioners in sarasota will discuss and vote on a $15 million project to fix the parking nightmare in saint armon circle. business owners want to put up parking meters and build a parking garage. the meeting starts at 6:00. in tampa a meeting will be held for a new loft style apartment building. mayor buck buckhorn will cut the ribbon for the lofts. it will house up to 100 new residents. back to back stories of how much we are growing here in the sunshine state. a lot has to do with the weather. what happened? this is the first day of spring. >> we had spring officially start yesterday. first full day
a january day believe it or not. so it's strong winds this morning helping to bring temperatures down. by 8:00 a.m. we'll be at 50 degrees. we're still going to drop for the next 2 and a half to 3 hours. then we start the slow creep getting warmer of up to about 56 at 11:00, 63 at 2:00, 66 at 4:00 p.m. well below average. plus the breeze throughout the day making it feel colder. you know once that sunsets we're in for a very chilly day. so spring training games will still go on. you still your jacket in lakeland at 1:05 at 63 degrees. so 8-day temperature trend this time of the year we do not stay this cool for long. 66 today, 73 tomorrow. we finally get back into the 80s by thursday. a head's up, we have rain chances for friday, saturday and sunday. i'll run those down coming up. at 4:38 let's check in on traffic on the 8. sad news this morning.
we're waking up to a trip le fatal accident. we don't hear that often. speed could be a factor here. university parkway is closed from bradenton down to desoto. this is right at the southern tip of the sarasota airport. you will not be able to get by. myrtle street, you may be able to use desoto road if they let you through this area but other than that myrtle street. i will follow this throughout the right now no significant slow downs but it's not exactly easy when the airport is there to route yourself around it. we've got a great drive on the howard frankland bridge. that's only going to take you 6 minutes to cross. that's a look at weather and traffic. and gayle. >> leslee, thank you. it was a full house at macdill air force base in tampa. ahead.

you got to take a look at this police chase through the minnesota. it's what you think it is, a cement truck and an 11-year-old is behind the wheel. police say the child swiped the truck from a local contractor and then swiped an officer while the joyride shocking many neighbors. >> i bet you he drove around in town here six or seven different time, smiling. he was having a good time. >> my goodness. thankfully no one was injured. this morning there's no word on the driver's identity. he was arrested and taken to juvenile hall. now to indiana where this morning police are trying to figure out why a woman drove her car into this school bus. inside the bus a high school
big state tournament. investigators believe that the 23-year-old driver lost the lid on her drink, spilling it, losing control of her car swerving into the side of the bus. family, friends and fans of the basketball team gathered for a prayer vigil for the students injured. 20 students and three coaches were injured. they have all been released from the hospital. the team stepped up to show their strength and did a cheer for the crowd. the top is the in the november terror attacks in paris claims he planned new attacks. he is being questioned by investigators in brussels where he was arrested friday. belgium's foreign minister said this morning that the terror suspect said he was ready to restart something. authorities are taking the claim seriously. they said they found a lot of weapons and new network of people around him. the fly dubai plane that crashed in russia on saturday
this according to the ceo of the airline. bad weather forced the pilots to circle the airport for 2 hours before attempting to land in strong winds. the airline nose dived and exploded killing all 62 people on board. today in florida scientists in south florida might have just found the biggest python ever recorded in that region. the snakes are an invasive species in the area and there could be negative implication from it. scientists are gathering data from the snakes to determine where they live and catch others. medical experts are urging parents to pay attention to signs like headaches and fatigue. they claim there's a rising trend of children, teens being diagnosed with high blood pressure like aaron ferris here. his blood pressure was so high he had to be hospitalized. genetics can be to blame but other steps can and should be taken.
