? ? ? ? ? right now on news channel 8 at 11:00. a state of emergency declared in italy, hundreds of after shocks have shaken the country as the death toll continues to rise, survivors are looking for loved ones and trying to pick up the pieces. funny money in the area, where investigators are finding these fake bills and why some stores are changing the way they accept cash. also this in a close eye on invest 99. the system is in the southern bahamas bringing wind and rain to the island. we're looking at where it's headed next and what that means for us. i'm jean ramirez. >> we're going to head to lee span for the latest on the

on poorly formed invest 99 l. this tropical wave coming into the southern bahamas. but only a 6% chance over the next five days that it will continue to develop. that's good news. plus there's tropical storm gaston out there. we got the latest information on it. it's expected to regain its category one hurricane status. strengthening to a category two. here's bermuda. it's way out to sea and it stays there. that's good news. when you look at what's left here, this is a ve this point. and it will eventually head into the bahamas. now, the visible satellite imagery is easier to pick out the spin in the atmosphere. you can see it right there. not a lot of cloud cover on this side. you want to look for a counterclockwise spin. all the storms are on the southeast side. that's the area of low pressure. that's what we would consider the center and what we're tracking. that's going to head into the

at that point, it's going to not only enter the warm waters of the gulf of mexico. but it's also going to enter into an atmosphere that's a little more conducive unfortunately for development. after that, as we head into monday and tuesday, a lot of computer models take it into the central eastern gulf of mexico. which would mean it would draw out tropical storm for us. which is eye i'm bringing rain chances up. let me give you the short-term guideline. typical hot summer days today an of storms mainly in the afternoon. but the most rain and any wind from this system that we would see, coming on monday and tuesday. but depending all on its eventual track guys. thank you lee. developing now in central italy, unrelenting after shocks and a shrinking window of opportunity. us rescuers are running out of time to find survivors. this is drone video that shows how bad the damage is.

400 injured. scott mcclean reports from italy. >> reporter: in central italy, residents and rescue workers alike have been shaken by a series of after shocks that are making the work of finding survivors even more difficult. these ancient towns have narrow streets, easily blocked by tumbling debris. everyone knows the chances of finding survivors alive is decreasing with every passing hour, they keep digging. tour guide francesco amelia shot these im to look for relatives. >> we tried to help the people that were actually digging with their hands. because, what i would like to say is that there are so many people that were -- they came out not dead and they tried their best to excavate, that i have been digging non-stop for 24 hours. >> maria was sleeping in her

fail, they are left with only this one tired argument, you're racist. you're racist. you're racist. >> now, neither candidate campaigns today, trump is doing some private events in nevada. clinton continues to be dogged by more emails and official meetings with donors to her foundation. a federal judge has ordered the state department to start delivering some of those emails uncovered by the fbi no later than september 13th. news right now regarding the zika virus. the fda just sent out an advisement that all donated blood and blood components should be tested for the zika virus. this is a revised recommendation. earlier this year, the administration recommended testing only in areas with active zika virus transmission. like in miami dade county. these new guidelines include all states and u.s. territories. again, right now the fda

donated in the united states, again, this is throughout the entire country, be tested for the zika virus. and today marks one year since two journalists were shot and killed on live television in roanoke virginia. a former employee of tv station wdbj opened fire on reporter alison parker and photo journalist adam ward. this happened during a live interview on the morning news there. the shooter took off from that scene and later shot and killed himself. the woman being interviewed at the time, vi also shot, but she did survive. here's an 8 on your side alert, the secret service says they're seeing an increase in cases of phony money being passed around. janelle tell us what you need to look out for so you don't get duped. authorities want people to be cautious about counterfeit money that's going around the tampa bay area. a man in citrus county was just arrested yesterday for trying to pass off fake money at a

and a woman went into a belles out let store last thursday and tried to purchase items. investigators say he gave the cashier seven 20-dollar bills that were fake. deputies arrested him last night at a motel. the feds say they're seeing an increase in these cases around the bay area. over the weekend, a local man was selling his phone on a popular app called offer up. but when he went to make the exchange, he noticed the serial numbers on the bills were all the same. >> i should have went with my gut. i knew something was wrong. something was off. >> that man got away on a motorcycle. we are checking with detectives to see if there's a possible connection between this case and the one in citrus county. reporting in tampa, news channel 8. several stores in brandon have stopped taking large bills, 50s, and 100s, because they were scammed. new this morning, a lake land firefighter will be

final play, dryer, muggy at 82. as we've mentioned on multiple occasions, the buccaneers are at raymond james with the new stadium scoreboards, 8:00 this evening. if you're going out to tailgate ahead of time, there's that rain chance, 87 degrees. still got leslie doing the air guitar in the studio. 86 degrees in lake land. 89 in sarasota. it's been sunny and muggy all morning thanks to this east at 1:00, we'll see showers dotting the landscape, any rain that forms will generally move from east to west. the best chance around 4:00 p.m. by 7:00, at the beginning of some of those games, showers might be around. then they'll head out clearing out later in the evening. ask tomorrow is actually pretty similar. but also tomorrow, that's when i really start paying closer attention to this tropical wave pushing through the bahamas. tomorrow, still a typical round of afternoon thunderstorms. not really associated necessarily with this low.

north. as it passes through the florida straits and into the gulf of mexico, i'm going to draw the rain chances up a little bit. a 40% chance saturday. to 50% sunday. highest rain chance at this point looks to be monday and tuesday. we'll worry about that next week guys. thank you lee, and homeowners in south tampa, they're not happy with pulsing music from bars on howard avenue. homeowners packed tampa city council to an ordinance under consideration would require bars to keep the volume below 55-decibels outside the clubs. but some bar managers claim that would make it impossible to do business. >> to make sure that we're very diligent when we set this decibel limit at 55. it's unacceptable and unattainable. i don't think any city in the united states let that reading stay at that and be able for their city to thrive. >> council members voted to go ahead with the ordinance but to

the tropics. >> before you go into the weekend you want to make sure that everything is it is. and for the most parts, through the weekend, we should have no impact from a tropical system. even though there are two out there. we have tropical storm gaston, which is expected to become a hurricane but stay out to sea. not a problem for anyone. then there's the invest 95 l it's dig organized. barely even holding together. there's a 60% chance in the next five days it could develop. the center is right here if you can it doesn't look like anything tropical at this point. but it may actually enter an area where it has the potential to develop. that's why we're continuing to talk about it even though it's basically still a tropical wave. saturday, sunday afternoon, it travels slowly to the straits of florida between florida and cuba. once it enters this area, that's when it could strengthen. we're going to see typical, hot, humid, afternoon storms. once this system gets into the

where it goes and how strong it is will have the effect on how much rain and wind we will see. at this point, it looks like monday and tuesday we could enhance rain chances. i'll show you why it may start to develop this afternoon. crazy colors, right? this is the wind shear factor in the forecast. so wind shear, we like that. that's what would tear the storm apart. upper level winds ruin this from developing. that's what it's been sitting in for 48 as we go forward in time, the computer models go into this purple or red shaded area. that's less wind shear, more favorable environment for strengthening. that's the reason why i'm not taking my eye off of it yet. the wind shear remains light and water temperatures remain warm. that gives us the indication that we could see development. which is why rain chances go up to 60% next week, guy? well back to breaking news

out an advisement that all donated blood and blood components need to be tested for the zika virus. this is a revised recommendation. earlier it was recommended they test only in areas with active zika virus transmission. like miami dade county. but these guidelines include all states and u.s. territories. if fda recommending all blood in the u.s. be tested for zika virus. gove planning a trip to washington to demand urgent action on zika virus funding. >> he's headed there after labor day weekend. the governor made this announcement at a veteran's event in bradenton. earlier this week he told us about the first nontravel related case of zika virus in the bay area. specifically in pinellas county. governor scott argues the zika virus problem is not just a florida problem and everyone has a part to play. >> everybody's got to be a part of this. no standing water.

at your home, at your business, everywhere you are, think about getting rid of the standing water. well, the state is running out of emergency funds for zika virus. they've allocated 23 of the $26 million set aside for fighting the zika virus. zika virus fears rise, bats are becoming welcome guests throughout florida. you heard that right. bats. right now the florida fish and wildlife commission is pushing to get more bat boxes like this in our state. their manmade ho like birdhouses, most are capable of housing 50 or more bats at a time. each bat can eat as many as 1,000 mosquitoes and other flying insects in just an hour. some people say they never thought of getting a bat box before, but now they will. >> i think it would be a good natural way to eliminate the problem or reduce the problem. >> while we're sleeping bats will be eating mosquitoes. so i'm for it.

bat boxes. but more bat boxes could mean more bats therefore fewer mosquitoes. if you've been cheated, when you need help, she's on your side. better call behnken. and investigator shannon behnken continues to hear from hernando county residents with eye popping water bills. including a retired couple that owes $1,200. the county couldn't find any leeks at their homes and when the couple saw shannon's report about they gave her a call. delores murphy has a 1,200- dollar bill for one month's worth of water. >> were you hoping they would find a leak. because then you would know what it was. >> yes. >> now i'm scared. >> hernando county found no cause for this much water use. so delores and her husband are stuck trying to find the money in their fixed budget. >> we felt we had enough.

because that was my portion of social security. >> reporter: delores thought she was the only one with this issue until better call behnken exposed others with high bills. for weeks residents have reached out to me with bills for 500, 800, $900. >> reporter: i took these complaints to the county spokeswoman, virginia. >> is it possible for someone to have a 1,200-dollar water bill and not have a leak? >> that will be a probably our technicians could help answer. >> reporter: does the water department think there's a problem here? >> the water department is working with the customers like they always do whenever there's a problem. >> reporter: she tells me complaints have not gone up. but that does not reflect the stories customers tell me. >> is there any possibility that the high water bills are wrong? >> reporter: again, we have to take them on a case by case basis and investigate each

one day. they found the women in their home stabbed to death and a vehicle possibly stolen from the property. their brutal murder is sending shock waves through the local community, the state, and all the way to merrill's childhood home in massachusetts where her family is mourning. >> it's sad that people come to this. whatever motivates them. you know, my aunt and sister margaret, they lived their lives to try to make the world better for the people who have nothing. >> reporter: right now there are no motive. >> californians continue to struggle with wildfires and the cedar fire in particular is giving firefighters a lot of trouble. the fire is growing mostly because of the wind. crews continue to attack the fire from the ground and the air day and night. after burning through 26,000- acres, firefighters have only managed 20% containment. evacuations remain in place for several counties in the fire's path. and now to athens georgia

cam captured a really incredible rescue. what you're about to see is video of an officer pulling a man from a burning vehicle. take a look. that's senior officer dan whitney. you see him here rescuing the passenger. the driver died in the fire. the impact of the crash bent the vehicle's frame and jammed all the doors shut so officer whitney bent the door frame back just enough to pull this man out through the rear window. as he did that, an explosion from under the hood knocked f without the brave rescue, police say the passenger likely would have died. incredible rescue. all right. coming up, parents, pretty sure you'll agree with the statement that most teens are addicted to social media. >> some adults too. it's the way teens communicate these days and now schools are using social media to communicate as well. coming up, we'll show you how one bay area school has its own social media team. plus apple issuing an

i don't know if we need to remind anybody, but it's the weekend. it's friday. we have good weather. maybe a decent day to hit the beach. or the dog beach if you have a dog. today is national dog day. it's time to appreciate the pooch in your life. or admire the hound next door. this day encourages dog ownership of all br and pure. and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy safe life. it's a goal for many on national dog day to find homes for all the dogs in need of a loving family. the goal is also to rescue 10,000 dogs each year. and they give you so much love when you bring them home. >> you jumped the gun on this yesterday. we're getting two national dog days from you. >> in my post about ti day yest i said everyday of my life is dog day.

it stays dry in the morning. it's why we heat up so quickly. and then just after lunch, around 1:00 p.m., we see these first few showers popping up. and they get caught in this east to west wind. the majority of the rain will be south of i 4. this model is over doing how much rain we'll see. but it's showing the highest rain chances farther south. and all the storms will push toward the coast. here it is for 5:00, getting ready for the weekend. rain ending, if you're headed out for dinner, you may have rain on the way there, but it should be dry by 9:00 p.m. all eyes turn to invest 99 north of cuba. these are two different computer models i want to show you. this is the american version. the gfs. it's expected to take it through the florida straits sunday into monday, on the eastern portion of the gulf of mexico. so this is monday. this is why i added in that extra rain chance again. this low is near us. it's going to -- this model takes it out back into the atlantic as you head into the
