flooded into the streets and onto the tarmac at l.a.x. looking for anyway out of the terminal they could find. a loud noise mistaken for shots fired inside at least three terminals triggering a wild mass evacuation at the nation's second largest airport just before 9:00 p.m. >> why are we running? >> security said to run. >> security said to run. >> reporter: there was confusion on the ground and uncertainty in the r. apparently there's an active shooting in the terminal. can you please advise us what's happening? >> reporter: the airport shutdown for more than an hour. gridlock on the road and in the sky. >> you're not going to be able to get into terminal 8. there's a situation going on there. >> reporter: our own lester holt was there arriving at l.a.x. during the incident reporting live on facebook. >> we're about to walk up the

passengers, security people, i heard shots fired or active shooter, run. people didn't really know what to do. >> reporter: lester spoke to witnesses inside the terminal. >> what did you hear? >> we didn't hear anything. we saw people run so we started running also. >> reporter: adding to the chaos, guns drawn, police approached this guy dressed as the frightening lockdown comes after a similar scare at jfk. police sweeping that airport after a similar report. this morning back at l.a.x., the all clear but only after this terrifying scene. again, police believe those reports of shots fired was simply a loud noise. this incident triggered nationwide delays and some diversions. all of this comes three years after a tsa agent was shot and killed here at the airport.

thank you. on the east coast, millions from the carolinas to the gulf coast are bracing for possible torrential downpours as the atlantic hurricane season kicks into high gear. mr. roker is here tracking it all. good morning. >> we got a lot of stuff going on right now. the season is really packing a punch. we've got a major hurricane in gaston. we've got another system coming off the african coast and two systems will affect the east coast before ait's all over. north of havana. it's 155 miles west-southwest of key west. 35-mile-per-hour winds. it's sometime thursday morning going to make landfall possibly as a strong tropical storm or weak hurricane. we have to watch this very closely. the big problem is going to be the rain. we're talking some areas 6 to 8 inches and that's going to cause problems. we also have a system that's off the carolina coast. it's going to come onshore and bring more rain.

the shoreline. and then we're watching activity in the gulf. a tropical wave will bring another 3 to 5 inches as you can see and there could be possibly flooding throughout southeast texas and if that's not enough, we've got two systems out in the pacific. we've got hurricane lester, not holt, and tropical storm madeleine which is now hurricane madeleine. it's going to brush the big island sometime wednesday evening with winds and heavy rain so both the atlantic and pacific very active right now. >> hurricanes aren't all that common for hawaii, right? >> they get brushed but they don't usually take direct hits. >> thank you, al. donald trump appearing to address his signature issue of immigration with a major speech in arizona this week.

we have the latest in that shooting death of nialdridge. her tragic death drawing attention to the city's ongoing problem with gun violence as we learn two men now charged in her murder had a long criminal history. nbc's kevin tibbles joins us now with more. kevin, good morning. >> reporter: another murder on the streets of chicago. this time the cousin of well dwyane wade and has people in this city saying enough is enough. a family heartbroken. >> this is my baby girl. >> reporter: the city of chicago once again caught in the crosshairs of senseless violence. aldridge, a mother of four, shot and killed friday while pushing her 3 week old baby girl in a stroller on the city's south

what is it doing to us? >> reporter: two brothers charged with her murder on sunday are being held without bail. police say they were allegedly gunning for someone else. a man who was targeted simply because he came from a different neighborhood. >> these two offenders are the prime example of the challenge we face here in chicago with repeat gun offenders that don't care who they shoot, don't care whose life they take, clearly, clearly don't fear the consequences of their action. >> aldridge's first time cousin of dwyane wade used social media to speak out. my cousin was killed today in chicago. another act of senseless gun violence. four kids lost their mom for no reason. unreal. enough is enough. in a twist a day before the

us. good morning. >> reporter: under scottish law they could face two years in prison, a fine or both. appearing in a scottish courtroom this morning, two united airlines pilots accused of showing up for their transatlantic flight to the u.s. saturday morning too intoxicated to fly. veteran pilots were taken into custody here at glasgow airport minutes before they were scheduled to leave for newark with 150 people onboard. one passenger tweeting what's going on? police in the tunnel very little information. veteran pilot captain john cox. >> this is one of the areas where pilots and all flight crew members have a virtual zero tolerance for impairment for any reason. >> reporter: in a statement united airlines said the two pilots have been removed from service and their flying duties.

own investigation as well. among passengers at newark airport, disbelief. >> these people have a huge responsibility. so many lives that they have to be responsible for. >> reporter: flight 162 finally took off from glasgow saturday with a new crew nearly ten hours late landing in newark at 8:32 p.m. the faa prohibits the consumption of alcohol within eight hours of the flight. most airlines make that rule 12 hours. we've h cases over the last few years of pilots attempting to fly intoxicated. savannah, back to you. >> all right. tom costello, thank you. there are new developments this morning in the murder of two nuns in a small mississippi town. police have arrested and charged a suspect in that case that left their community reeling as mourners gather to pay respects at a memorial mass today. here's nbc's janet shamlian. >> reporter: this morning a heartbroken community

when is the last time you had your blood pressure checked? >> i've not been to the doctor in two years. okay. let's not judge. i'm going to be honest. i have insurance of course. i'm one of those people i made a point of going to get my annual female exam. i've not been to the doctor in two years. i know, i know, i know. >> easy to get at home these devices. simple. here's why it's so important. number one cause your blood pressure. this is what your artery looks like. i want you to pretend for example that you have a little diabetes, which is like glass shards. scrape that. you start to actually dig gashes in there. you see that hole you made there. this is what happens. once you get cracks in there, the body gets upset and blood pressure is a hammer. take this hammer if you don't

if you hit it here, i guess not. i had this fixed up. there it is. there. it's really bad blood pressure. once you have a hole in your artery, you have to fix it. what's the best way to fix a hole? you use plaster. unfortunately the body's plaster is something called cholesterol. you take cholesterol and slather this on there and you get not appealing material andve it begins to look like plaque. >> that's lining your blood vessel. >> we need to cut out salt. >> pressure, stress, number one problem we find in our surveys is probably the biggest driver. being short-term stressful environment like doing the show here or exercising raises your blood pressure but long-term stress you can't get away from it doesn't cause this plaque buildup. don't want that inside of you. >> waist line and why is waist measurement so important? >> the other way of dropping

your waist. hold on. there's a lot of stuff including squeezing of your kidneys which is responsible for regulating your blood pressure. your body will raise the blood pressure. men don't weigh themselves and women weigh too much. your waist size is the most accurate technique. everyone at home listen carefully. men over the age of 40, we take the belt and put it down there. >> still >> 28 over here, baby. >> the sweet spot is take a simple measuring tape around your hips. up to your belly button there. suck it in now. you're 27. 27 inches is the number you have to remember. it needs to be less than half your height. just to put numbers on it. for men it should be less than 40 inches. for women less than 35 inches. that's the rule of thumb.
