first, let's get you out the door because the tropic, it's heating up. >> yeah, a big development overnight when the hurricane center had to put out a special advisory at 2:00 because hurricane matthew strengthened so rapidly to a category two hurricane. mountainsing west quickly at 14 miles per hour. one thing they did note too is the strongest wins are close to the center of circulation so they didn't have to increase the warnings. didn't get stronger for land at but it's expected to be a category three hurricane through the weekend, getting close to jamaica early monday morning, crossing over eastern cuba and the bahamas by wednesday. we have to watch for more than a week as it heads up florida's east coast. most models say it will make the hard turn to the north next week. but this morning one model, the gfs, gets closer to florida's east coast so that's the reason
on hurricane matthew. otherwise, pockets of rain west of 75. we have sugar mills wood, citrus county, new port richey, hudson, pasco. and some bradenton really seeing the rain all morning long. in weather and traffic on the 8s, more on today's rainfall potentials as i focus on matthew right now. and leslee lacey, what she's focusing on. yeah, a pedestrian-involved accident on the interstate. this is southbound 75 coming away from the new tampa area, folks and. as i this is actually just past fowler avenue. so at this point, traffic is being diverted on to fowler avenue. and then you can make your way down to the surface streets. so allow for extra time if you take south 75 because the surface streets, you have red lights. 301 is the alternate here. from the west side of pasco county, you can take 75 and then merge on the to 275. and that will get you down towards the the area as well. and meredyth censullo is live
what's it looks like now, meredyth? >> reporter: well, very active investigation underway. historically, these type of fatal accidents do take a couple hours to wrap up. so i would expect that you will need to detour through the morning hours. again, it is a pedestrian- involved crash. we have at least one driver onscene who may have hit this gentleman. we don't know if his vehicle is onscene yet. so obviously we don't know the circumstances of why he i-75. what we can tell you is that fhp and hillsborough county sheriff's office, they are here helping with that detour.. a couple cars were moved off the roadway but right now, it is very quiet as we just have law enforcement onscene. as we get more information in, we will certainly let you knowment but for now, the the detour remain -- let you know. but for now, the detour remains
interstate. thank you so much, meredyth censullo. right now, three pasco county teens won't be in the f0 teens today. ey were suspended for wearing controversial costumes during spirit week. they claimed they dressed in white sheets to look like ghost but many think it was garb like the kkk. ryan hughes is live at the high school in pasco county. the students and parents, some were outraged by this. >> reporter: gene, good morning to you. outrage may be an understatement. in 2016, some parents simply can't believe what the teens wore to do school so they took to social media to get their message across. >> there needed to be a lesson in this. the fact that you cannot walk around spewing hate and discontent, bullying somebody and thinking that, oh, i'm just going to get a slap on the wrist. that's not okay. >> reporter: she tells news channel 8 their 10th grade son
classmates walking around in the costumes. this is a social media post by one of the teens apparently describing the garb as ghosts. she explained that she called the high school principal who said she took care of the issue but her son said the students were wearing the costumes a half hour later so the greens contacted the press. the students were removed from class and suspended for one to 10 days. and now is superintendent in the next half hour, another student at the same school was also wearing something controversial. i'll show you that coming up in 30 minutes, gene. >> can't wait to see that. but never seen a ghost with a cone head, ryan. thank you. a deal to keep uber and lyft drivers on the streets of hillsborough county is moving forward. currently uber and lyft driver cans face fines if caught in hillsborough county but the proposed deal requiring
insurance may put an end to the issue. cab companies oppose the plan and it still has to be approved by hillsborough officials. >> it would prove that the ptc is onboard with embracing new ideas and new technologies. it would help rebuild the confidence with our state legislature by clearly showing them it's a new day in tampa bay. >> the ptc will vote on the proposed deal at their next meeting in october. happening today, the teenager accused of shooting three people at a south carolina elementary school will appear in juvenile court this morning. the judge has not decided whether cameras will be allowed in. an update for the three people the teen shot and wounded, one student remains in critical condition this morning. and also happening today, the funeral of the former israeli president shimon peres. president barack obama and a delegation of u.s. dignitaries just touched down in israel for the funeral. they'll join world leaders paying tribute to the 93-year- old statesman and one of

but there's nothing to the -- >> well, sources close to jeb bush's father former president george h.w . bush said that the 92-year-old would vote for hillary rodham clinton on election day. let's get a check on the weather. here's leigh spann. >> we're still tracking the pockets of rain pushing in from the gulf of mexico. so some heavy rain coming down in central and western portions of citrus county and in the northwest portion of hernando, spotty rain in coastal pasco and bradenton. and i think the rainfall potential between now and noon is almost all west of 75. and now the heavier downpours push east of 75 into polk county, highlands and eastern hillsborough and pasco county this afternoon. as far as temperatures through the day, 77 at 8:00. 82 at 11:00. 86 at 1:00. kind of steamy around 3:00 p.m. at 88 degrees. and now interesting thing in the sky tonight, it's the black moon. now you may have heard of the blue moon when you have two
in one month. it's invisibility isable. you can't see it because it's a new moon. so anyway, happening tonight. happens about every 32 months. something you can't see in the sky. just fyi. 87 tomorrow. back up to 89 for sunday and monday. interesting but invisible. and now traffic on the 8s. >> very cool. i wish the roadways were invisible. we've got a couple issues, new crash northbound 75, the the entrance ramp in county. it's at 301 entrance ramp to northbound 75. and then of course this accident here, this fatal crash on 75. but in hillsborough county, not too the far away if 301, what is happening is southbound traffic is completely blocked off past fowler avenue. all the traffic is being detoured southbound on to fowler. and it's all due to a fatal accident. and a live look. you can see for yourself, a lot of activity down there. and there's a crunched up car. this accident involves a pedestrian.
so what happens is you're diverted off on to fowler avenue. you can take 301 from pasco or even 75 and then move on to 275 southbound. and that will get you down into the bay area very, very well. 275 and 301 look very good. and that's a look at weather and traffic. back to gene and gayle. >> thank you. we will check back with you. tomorrow, tampa international f0 airport is hosting a job fair. 's for police, traffic specialists and dispatch careers. it will run from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. today. and then from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. tomorrow, saturday. this two-day fair will take place at the hillsborough aviation boardroom in the main terminal on level three. good luck. they seem too good to be true. >> an 8 on your side warning about sweepstakes scams and what you can learn from a largo retiree's misfortune. and an 8 on your side health alert this morning. why medical professionals want
