our top story this morning, tracking hurricane matthew. the powerful category four storm is packing winds of 130 miles per hour. this is a look at the storm as it churns in >> and the outer bands of matthew are hammering haiti right now. these are images just coming in to our newsroom of all the flooding in kingston, jamaica caused by the storm. things are only expected to get worse. >> in cuba, people are getting ready for cuba. crews spent the weekend boarding up windows in havana and they took down signs that could blow away. good morning. welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm gayle guyardo. >> and i'm gene ramirez.
what the powerful storm is going to do. we want to check in with meteorologist leigh spann. >> yes, it weakened down to winds of 130 miles per hour. it's going through an eye wall replacement cycle which may mean it's going to get the stronger in the coming hours. it's just now making the turn to the north at 5 miles per hour. for jamaica, it's going to be on the weak side of the storm. now looks like some of the strongest winds, storm surge in the haiti area and eastern portions of cuba tuesday evening before moving into the bahamas as a major category three hurricane but still off the jacksonville coastline late friday. so we have a full week to be tracking this. and almost all of the models say something similar, off of florida's east coast. and then turning, some of the models now take it closer to the carolina coastline so we are keeping a close eye on it.
strong storms yesterday. it allows us to be cooler this morning. 74 in bradenton. and actually expect a repeat of yesterday. dry in the morning, about a 50% rain chance later in the day. at 4:38 in weather and traffic on the 8s, i will go more specifically hour-by-hour with the forecast and now leslee lacey with the morning commute. this is a look at i-75 southbound near the selmon about two hours ago, we had a crash here. it just wrapped up. let's go ahead and roll the footage on that so you can see what this looked like, 75 near the selmon expressway. and this is closer to the riverview area leaving brandon. crashed up there, injuries involved, one person taken to the hospital. but the good news is, everything has now cleared from the roadway and there are absolutely no delays on 75 coming away from brandon. back to gene and gayle.
a st. petersburg motel that's been home to low-income families for years is closing for good. and people who live at the hotel have just a few hours left to pack up and get out. the building will be demolished to make way for a new development there. and news channel 8's ryan hughes is live from the hotel. and some of the residents are scrambling and have to find a new place to live. >> reporter: they are. and time is running out. this place is supposed to be empty by 8:00 this morning and minute arrangements to leave and many are upset by the prospect of moving. >> i think it's wrong. putting families and their children out. >> reporter: one resident was so upset she could bare by talk to us. they were served eviction notices last week and must now
company bought the property after it went into foreclosure. the new owners plan to turn it into a commercial development. social services has reserved space at a local shelter for those who have nowhere to go. sheriff deputies and animal control officers will be here this morning to help people move out. animal control officers will take pets that cannot go with their owners. we will be here as the process gets underway. >> tough enough enough to the find a new might have to part ways with pets as well. terrible. thank you. right now, north port police are on control at a charter school are on alert this morning after threats from two students. the principal says two students made threats. the students will not be allowed in class today. we are working to learn more about the threat and the students involved. in your vote, some big
democratic presidential candidate hillary rodham clinton. president barack obama and vice president joe biden. today vice president joe biden will attend a rally in sarasota and our jennifer leigh will sit down one on one with the vice president to discuss the election and important issues. on wednesday, president barack obama is scheduled to make stops at the university of south florida and in miami. well, this morning republican presidential candidate donald trump is facing a new controversy. >> an anonymous tipster sent of trump's 1995 tax returns. how a loophole allowed trump to skip paying federal taxes for 18 years. >> reporter: trump supporter george tells me the news from the new york times report showing trump lost more than $916 million in 1995 is nothing new. >> the taxes were released. people know that he has some

$4,000 from the safe. a driver who hit and killed a man crossing the road in clearwater will not be facing charges. police believe the pedestrian is to blame. the crash happened sunday morning on gulf to bay boulevard. the driver of a bmw hit a 75- year-old man. police believe the man stumbled into traffic. and we are making calls to find out more information about a boat crash during the clearwater superboat national champiip race and two people were rushed to the hospital. we are working to find out the latest on their conditions. let's get a check on the weather with leigh spann. >> good morning. i know a lot of you last night were dealing with lightning, things like that. that's cleared out and it's allowed us to be more comfortable this morning. the temperatures start in the mid-70s. 75degrees at 8:00. up to 28 at 11:00. just a 10% rain chance for the lunch break.
lot like yesterday, 87 degrees around 3, 4:00. better rain chances after 5:00 p.m. as the storms hit the coast. it's the heavy downpours pushing toward the gulf this evening. and then we turn our attention to hurricane matthew which will head north into the bahamas into the week ahead. and interestingly, if it takes that path, the it's going to help bring in less humid air for us. and look at the rain chance today at 50%. down to 40% tomorrow. and 20% by and we will check with traffic on the 8s as you get the monday started. that's right. we had an earlier crash in between brandon and riverview. it was by the selmon expressway exit. take a look here, this is gunn highway at the veterans expressway. this is usually wrapped up by about 5:00, 5:30 a.m., but use ehrlich if it's still closed or linebaugh. and veterans expressway itself, looks fantastic.
up to speed and also i-4 around mcintosh, dark but a great drive coming away from plant city. that's a look at weather and traffic on the 8s. back to gene and gayle. >> all right, thank you so much, leslee. a scary weekend for two florida surfers. sharks bit both men while they were in the surf just off the beach. a 32-year-old was paddling on the surf board when the shark bit him on the side. and on sunday, a 21-year-old surfer was both men should be okay, despite that, beachgoers are worried. >> makes me not want to go in the ocean a lot. makes me not want to go in the deep end. >> according to official, these are the 13th and 14th shark bites so far this year in the county. a pair of baby manatees are rescued in the florida keys. these manatees needed help after their mom died.

well this morning, reality tv star kim kardashian is said to be physically unharmed after being held up at gun point sunday night in paris. a spokesperson says two armed men held her up in her hotel room. she is in faris for fashion week. her husband kanye west was performing in new york city. this is video of the performance at the meadows festival. he left the show early because of the incident telling fans he had a family emergency.
california this morning where the fatal shooting of an african-american teen saturday sparked this protest in south los angeles. you see dozens of people blocking the intersection there. the protest started after a vigil in honor of an 18-year- old shot and killed by police after taking off from a car being pursued. across america, a murder trial involving a georgia toddler left to die in a hot suv is expected in 2014, ross harris is accused of leaving his 22-month-old son cooper in the suv for hours. harris claims it was an accident but prosecutors have charged him with murder. they claim he was unhappy in his marriage and was seeking other relationships at the time his son died. two college students in north carolina are shot to death at a house party. gunfire erupted after a fight
a 21-year-old and a 19-year-old died. no one else was hurt. investigators are now working to find the shooter. new mexico's balloon fiesta took a dangerous turn when two balloons crashed into power lines. this is cellphone video showing the moment one of the balloons hit the lines and a second balloon also hit power lines but that was a separate incident. the ntsb and faa are now investigating. it is no secret, filling up the gas tank can be exprci expensive tank of gas. >> how about $10,000? >> he filled the car up, maybe $20 or something like that. used his credit card. >> that's susan explaining when her husband did when he filled up the tank at a valero gas station in may. they didn't realize there was a problem until the next day when they tried to use the card again and they were denied.
the station charged him $24,000 for fuel. she worked for months and just recently was credited back the money. wow. another tough sunday for the bucs. the team falls to 1-3 after a beating from the broncos. the former cornerback made two interceptions. one of them leading to the run that gave the broncos that 14-7 lead. denver then cashed in on more mistakes by the broncos remain unbeaten. as for the bucs, the line backer says it is time to step it up boys. >> we got to do better. we got to pick it up. i know y'all get tired of hearing the the same thing over and over. just got to do better, man. we ain't doing enough. >> next monday, the bucs play the panthers in north carolina. an upbeat end to the season for the rays.
rangers in their final game of the season. a 10th inning double. the rangers face baltimore or toronto in the play-offs on thursday. lots happening out there. a close eye on a big hurricane, hurricane matthew. >> and yeah, and it's busy out there. >> that's right. >> and it's actually a slow- mover. we will be tracking it by this time next week, still talking about hurricane matthew. now it's going knot going to have an impact on our foreca today, a few cloud, 75 degrees at 8:00 a.m. maybe a stray shower at noon but most of you dry, at lunchtime, 84 degrees. 50% rain chance later with a high of 87. right now, 70 in brooksville and inverness. 75 in lakeland. 74 in bradenton. maybe a little bit less humid because we had that late day rain helping to draw the humidity out. my weather watcher bob in venice says it's 74 at his house. the day does start out dry.
dry in the morning and those thunderstorms that develop in the afternoon get pushed toward the gulf of mexico and just like what happened yesterday, caused the the rain delay at the buc's game. evening thunderstorms that will be around until 9:00, 10:00 until they taper off. and tomorrow, mostly dry and less humid with the late evening storms. and then into tuesday afternoon, i expect not as many storms and then pushing toward here's hurricane matthew. still heading north. it should put the jamaica area on the eastern side of the storms. by tuesday, a category four storm over the bahamas. and if it follows this path, it will help bring in drier air for us. the eight-day forecast, 50% rain chance today down to 10% by the weekend. how about traffic on the 8s? we are flowing at good speeds.

in this morning's consumer alert, a new survey reveals a developing, tapping into their child's college funds. they surveyed over a thousand parents that saved money. nearly half have dipped into the saving, often for reasons that weren't very educational, like paying for a wedding or going on vacation. experts say this could be financially crippling. >> the survey about 21% of people said that they don't think there's penalty to tapping the funds early, which sorry, there's a penalty and

time for weather and traffic on the 8s on this monday. getting kids to the bus stop this morning. it will be dry but from yesterday evening's rain, there may be puddles. 75degrees. when you get home from school, 87 degrees and the storms just start to develop and the rain chance gettings better through today's high 87. 88 tuesday and wednesday. and cooler by friday, going down to 85. leslee lacey, how about traffic on the 8s? well, i have good news. i will start with that first. overnight construction, the it was tying up lane, gunn highway at the veterans expressway, it has cleared from the roadway but we still have construction remaining at this project, northbound 275, the sunshine skyway bridge. and we still have arrows out there. the left lane is taken away. this is northbound before you get to the hump but absolutely no delays.
