our stop stories this morning, hurricane hermine jamaica and haiti. right now it's a powerful category four storms with 130 s leigh spann tracking the story in a moment. police at a sarasota county school this morning after two students made threats. what the principal is telling parents and what the school is doing about the two students. and time is running out for the residents at this st. pete motel. they have until 8:00 this morning to find a new place to live. why some say the eviction will leave them homeless. good morning and welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm gayle guyardo. >> and i'm gene ramirez.
on hurricane hermine from the hurricane center. still has winds of 130 miles per hour. still making a powerful category four hurricane. and very little change from this track that what we were seeing last night. what it's expected to do, still pass by the tip of haiti as a category four hurricane, putting gammon the weaker side of the storm. -- putting jamaica on the weaker side of the storm. and unfortunately haiti, going to put them with the strongest storm surge and the strongest wi and then by wednesday morning, passing over eastern cuba and into the bahamas as a category three hurricane. and look how slow this is moving. it's barely north of jacksonville by saturday. so with it coming so close to the east coast of florida, it's going to remain in our sights. i've put the american computer model, the gfs, and the european model over atop each other. and they are both similar through thursday.
the gfs pulls out quarterbackly. and by saturday, the european has it off the south carolina coast. so things could still change. right now, 7 in lakeland. 73 in bradenton. not bad. but i expect storms to return. highs today around 87 degrees. and heavy rain too. at 4:38 in weather and traffic on the 8s, i will talk about the rainfall potential. and leslee lacey has the commute this morning. >> that's right. overnight construction cleared up on the on the sunshine skyway bridge. this is northbound. traffic is light. let's take a look at the maps and as i zoom in again, northbound, just be on the look out for that, a little bit of construction tying up the left lane. and heading over to polk county, it looks great on i-4 through lakeland. this is by the polk parkway, back to gene and gayle. happening today, the clock
st. petersburg motel. they have just a few hours to finish packing before they'll be forced out. for years, the motel has been home to low-income families but the building will be demolished in the coming months to make way for a commercial development. news channel 8's ryan hughes is at the motel this morning. some families have been there for quite a while. >> reporter: some have been here for several years but at this point, they have just a few hours left before they must many. [no audio ] >> reporter: eviction notices were served within the last week. some residence made arrangements to stay at another motel but it's more costly so they won't be there long. a company bought the property
foreclosure. the new owners plan to demolish the motel and turn it into commercial property. back here live this morning, closing time is 8:00 this morning. sheriff deputies and social service workers will be onhand to assist. we will be here gayle and bring you the latest as the remaining residents leave the mosley motel. >> got to be hard for those folks. thank you, ryan. right now, an uneasy morning after verbal threats are made by two students concerning imagine school's upper campus. news channel 8's mary mcguire joins us live from the school this morning. north port police are investigating but how are they making sure kids heading back to class this morning feel safe. >> reporter: snow flurries. >> reporter: well, the two students have been identified and they'll not be here in class today but north port police will still be on campus at imagine school in north port in order to ease any concerns.
police presence this morning to assure students, families and staff that this campus is indeed safe. in a letter, the principal says she is confident there is no threat to the school and commends the students who made the right decision to find an adult with this information so they could respond quickly to the matter. we are working to find out more information about the threat and more information about the students involved. north port police tell us that they are still investigating this incident, gene. >> ok you learn more. mary, thank you. a third arrest in the 2014 murder of a florida state university law professor. the 31-year-old katherine mcmanwa is charged with the murder. police say she has ties to the victim's ex-wife and one of the accused shooters. a neighbor found him dead in his garage. he was shot twice in the head. miami beach police are searching for thieves that dragged away an atm.
crooks prying the machine away from the wall using an suv. look at. that they are scrambling to try to get it in. and they load the atm into the back and just take off. we still don't know how much money was inside and the machine. no one has been arrested yet. a kitchen fire forces a brooksville family out of their home. the family claims they were cooking with hot oil when it ignited in the kitchen at the house. by the time firefighters arrived five minutes later, there was and luckily the family managed to get out but they'll not be able to stay in their home. and in your vote, big names are campaigning in florida this week for democratic presidential candidate hillary rodham clinton. president barack obama and vice president joe biden. today vice president joe biden will attend a rally in sarasota and our jennifer leigh will sit down one on one with the vice president to discuss this year's election and the important issues surrounding the election. on wednesday, president barack obama will campaign in florida. he is scheduled to make stops
florida in tampa and also in miami. new information in the new jersey train crash. the train's engineer says he has no memory of the crash into the hoboken station. and ntsb officials say he told investigators he was six minutes late and going 10 miles per hour as the train approached the the terminal. the next thing he remembers is waking up on the floor of the cab after the crash. one person died and 114 others were injured. investigators say they recovered one recorders but it wasn't working. crew members' families and loved ones mark the one year anniversary of the sinking of the el -- the cargo -- the el faro cargo ship. a plaque was unveiled.
appropriate acknowledgment of the bravery, grace and dignity with which our el faro families have endured their unimaginable grief. >> el faro's owner paid for the lighthouse. the coast guard is investigating why the ship sailed into the path of hurricane joaqumn. and a hurricane right now, hurricane hermine. leigh spann has an eye on that. >> yeah, the it's moving slowly to not going to have an impact on our weather for today. and on florida's weather for most of the week actually. starting about 74 degrees. by 10:00 a.m., 79. mid-80s at lunchtime. and an afternoon high of 87 around 3:00, 4:00. the rainfall potential this morning, slim to none. in fact, the first few showers will happen mostly east of 75 or as early as noon. more likely 1:00 or 2:00 in polk county and highlands county. and then all the storms push
west coast of florida through the evening. and we could see pockets of heavy rainfall, more than an inch in spots. look at the eight-day temperature, 87 today. 88 tuesday and wednesday. friday and saturday, less humid and temperatures in the mid- 80s. and the drier air is actually a result of hurricane hermine as it draws in drier air moving to the north. and let's check on traffic on the 8s. it is moving along. we've had overnight construction but most clear up. we still have a little bit out there, manatee county, pinellas county area, you know what i'm talking about. sunshine skyway bridge here, 275 northbound, you can see the left lane taken away here right before you get to the hump. and there's the hump right there. it's still a great drive. not seeing delays. just use caution through the area. and let's move over here and zoom in. this had is where it's located. and a great drive on the howard frankland bridge, that's only going to take six minutes to cross. and about seven across the

>> thank you. a lot going on in the tropics this morning. what's the latest, leigh spann? >> yes, the current forecast for hurricane hermine. still has winds of 130 miles per hour which makes it a category four hurricane. over the weekend, it strengthened to a category five. the it's going to head north and it's going ravage the area of haiti. the dominican republic is far enough not to see the brunt of it. but haiti and cuba could see treacherous conditions tuesday and wednesday. and then through the bahamas. and should for the most part staying off florida's east. we're more concerned with the south carolina and north carolina coastline. for us today, no worries for hurricane hermine. mostly dry around 75 degrees and a slim rain chance at noon. and once again, i bring the rain chance up to 50% by 4:00 p.m. and temperatures around 87. a look at the day, again, mostly had dry through the morning. the first few showers could be in polk county and highlands county before we get the heavier downpours. and if you are out and about
talking about, heavy downpours near the coast around 6:00, 7 :00, 8:00. and now there's computer models but i wanted to show you the model because it's typically one of the more reliable but also one of the ones that's farthest to the west meaning closer to the east coast of florida. and still through the bahamas by wednesday. and notice into thursday and friday. and it may just parallel the carolina coastline into the weekend. again, that's the farthest one closest to that we don't see a lot of impacts. but we expect drier air into friday and the weekend. and leslee lacey, how about traffic on the 8s? well, looking good over the bay area bridges. a little bit of construction on the sunshine skyway bridge. this is southbound and they are moving the camera around. a great drive southbound. and northbound is good too but we have construction by the hump that's tying up the left lane. they are in the process of clearing that up. but there's no delays. and i-4 looks great through plant city.
