money. at least that is what she claimed. a man suspected a scam and knew he better call behnken. good evening, i'm keith cate. >> i'm jennifer leigh. thank you for joining us tonight. we begin with breaking news. firefighters are battling a two alarm fire in hillsborough county. this is video from less than an hour ago. you see the smoke billowing there. the scene is near berry and benjamin roads. there are chemicals and possibly animals inside. lego hd paul lamison who is live over the scene. paul, that's the latest there? >> >> reporter: good afternoon. the fire is down a little bit. it is a very active scene. this is the renew it supply company. they do pet supplies. flea supplies so firefighters are concerned about the chemicals inside and some animals inside. it is still hard to get in.
5:01 pm
to look inside the building. they still have not gone into most of it. the fire is down considerably. let me show you, you can see what the heat from the fire did. it almost collapsed this part of the roof. and, the other problem is traffic. the smoke was heavy. this is the veteran's expressway. they have lanes of traffic closed and i will zoom in down here and as you go down toward tampa international airport, the traffic is bumper to bumper and very slow going. so in this area traffic will be a problem because of the fire. >> paul lamison, thank you very much. someone shot and killed a store clerk in lake wales seconds after he closed for the night and that gunman is still on the loose at this hour. melissa marino joins us live at the quality plus gas station and the public really need to be on high alert. >> reporter: that's right. just terrifying. they ambushed him right over
5:02 pm
now, the search is on for these suspects. this is video of mohammed alum's last moments. he is walking to his car to go home. but two people waiting in the dark have a different plan. they point a gun in his face and make him take off his pants. then ... >> i heard a couple of shots. >> reporter: they took his life. >> you don't have to kill somebody to rob them. >> reporter: friend james frazier is devastated. >> i care because he i have a family. >> reporter: now a man hunt for these dangerous criminals. >> it is alarming. >> reporter: after pulling the trigger, you can see they run off with the victim's pants. >> the fact they are willing to take somebody's life over something as simple as a pair of pants and what he has. >> reporter: investigators scoured every inch of the qp gas station where it happened. they took molds of the footprints where the suspects ran. >> we have two shifts of officer out.
5:03 pm

five people killed in a fiery crash. one girl is fighting for her life. they were hit head on at mlk in tampa. eyewitnesses claim street racing is to blame though troopers say there is nothing to prove that. relatives of the family killed are heartbroken. >> i don't wish this upon anybody at all. i mean, he is in pieces. you know? so it hu there's families out there who have suffered so much pain. and i can only imagine how it feels to lose, you know, 90% of your family. >> troopers tell us the driver who caused this crash also died along with his passenger. investigators confirmed the driver was speeding but again, no evidence shows he was racing. well, here's a twist, with only 12 days to go before election day, a democrat is
5:05 pm
donald trump. newschannel8's political reporter candace mccowan joins us now. we know senator marco rubio has been trying to keep arms length from donald trump for a while. and you have congressman patrick murphy is forced to defend himself. >> absolutely. i asked congressman murphy about this very thing right here in our studio last week. he said there is no connection between his family's business and donald trump. all it takes is a little looking and you will see trump and murphy's family business do have ties. >> it is marco ru it is an absolute lie. we have never done business with donald trump. >> reporter: there is no confusing his answer even when asked a second time. >> let's clear this up. was there not some dealings between him and your father on a real estate deal? >> no. absolutely not. we have never had a contract with donald trump. >> reporter: his father tom owns coastal construction. the congressman once worked there, but now owns millions in company stock. check out coastal construction's website and you
5:06 pm
and, there is this picture of murphy's father and trump shoveling dirt at a ground breaking together. murphy's campaign e-mailing me thursday saying donald trump showed up for a photo open abdomen collected a check to have his name written on the side of a building saying coastal construction has never worked for donald trump. murphy has gone full throttle on marco rubio who announced donald trump's comments about women. but rubio coue the republican nominee. >> marco rubio is just trying to distract and confuse the voters because he is so concerned with his own choice for president. >> reporter: voters will now have to decide who has the closer ties to donald trump and if it matters. and, if this is a distraction or a lie. >> it is an absolute lie. we have never done business with donald trump. >> you know, and this race is very contentious. there are polls out there many have taken in the past few
5:07 pm
points ahead of murphy. >> they have had a couple of debates and there is no love lost between the candidates. it's a tough race there. >> reporter: right to the finish. >> candace mccowan, thank you. now, to the campaign trail in the presidential race. first lady michelle obama campaigned with hillary clinton in north carolina. clinton talked about her plans to combat bullying. on the gop side, trump is making three stops in ohio. most polls show trump ahead in the buckeye state. and speaking of polls, experts scratching their heads. many polls show widespread differences with just days until the election. mark meridith has been digging into the data and he joins us live from our dc bureau. the million dollar question is which number should we believe? >> reporter: jen, i wish i could give you that answer because we are seeing so many polls coming out every single day. and as you were talking about, they are sending different messages. so, you do have to break it down a little bit.
5:08 pm
is ahead. however, by how much of a margin? well, that depends on who you ask. i want to start by looking at an la times tracking poll. this is a poll that is done a little bit more frequently than some of the other polls you would see. and you can see there that it is a dead even split. this is among 3200 likely voters when asked, they are right now split, a tie between hillary clinton and donald trump. but, on this same day we see that poll come out, we are seeing another one. this one from abc washington post. also a tracking poll. but you can see there, right now, we have clinton ahead by seven. and this was with 1100 likely voters. so, what is interesting is when you look at the margin of error, it could swing things in either direction. clinton would still win, but it would be a much closer race. so, what we are looking at here among these polls really is telling. but we also have to make the point that this is just what
5:09 pm
both the democratic and republican party, jen, they are spending millions of dollars to try to get this poll information first and to get it right. jen? >> wow, well, okay, let's look past the polls for a moment. what can either campaign do to really hammer home their message in the next couple of days or is there anything? an attack or an ad that will make a big difference? >> reporter: we are seeing the ad wars heat up. donaldru and network news coverage. we are seeing more of his ads hit the airways in the last couple of days. clinton has been trying to paint the message of what she can bring to the table following president obama's presidency. she was on the campaign today with the first lady. the president will be out there on her behalf tomorrow. for donald trump, it will be interesting to see if he changes the message. he was on the stump today. didn't seem to have any sign of that.
5:10 pm
