virginia after severe weather strikes wednesday afternoon. in the community of waverly near portsmouth, three people are confirmed dead closer to us, the storms swept through appomattox county in the evergreen community, killing one man and injuring seven others.right now, there are reports that what hit the evergeen was a tornado, but official confirmation would come from a national weather service survey team. no word yet on when a nws team will be in appomattox county. governor mcaufliffe declared a state of emergency. here's what it looked like on wednesday evening along route 460 in appomattox county. dozens of homes were damaged, some had part of the roof missing, ohers had walls ripped away. as rescue crews from across the region raced to the scene, our crews saw neighbors pitching in, helping families search through damaged homes. one woman says she ran outside, held onto a big tree in a ditch, as the storm blew her mobile home away. "things were hitting me in my back. i felt a tree or limb hit me in my head. i guess it was it may have been part of the house. i didn't see it

of tuesday's virginia primary. florida senator marco rubio is planning a campaign stop in the star city. according to "virginia for marco rubio," the rally is scheduled for sunday night at 8-30. doors will open at 7-30. right now a location has not been determined, but rsvps will be required for the event. we'll bring you the latest on rubio's visit as we get new information both on-air and online. donald trump will also be in southwest virginia, just one day before virginians cast their ballots in the state presidential primary. according the republican candidate's online schedule, he will speak at noon on monday at radford university's dedmon center. the campaign searched for venues in salem and roanoke large enough to hold the rally. but none were apparently available. the dedmon center seats a little under four thousand people, but the trump for president website says no more tickets are available. yesterday trump was in virginia beach appearing at a candidates forum at regent university. while trump was sitting down with pat robertson at the event, the

february, but a lot of people will be going swimming this weekend in radford. this weekend people will be braving the waters at bisset park for this year's polar plunge fundraiser. the event will be hosted by radford university and the radford police department. the plunge will send participants into the cold new river to raise money for special olympics virginia. we have hundreds of athletes that just finished competing at a massive basketball tournament at cassell coliseum. they're in the middle of their basketball season and we've had a lot of people see them play in practice and then sign up to plunge because they know the funds they raise do support them. the goal is to raise 60-thousand dollars for the event. 40-thousand dollars has already been

a traffic alert this morning for drivers in giles county. a rock slide has partially blocked route 623 also known as cascade drive. the slide occurred about three miles north of route 460 in pembroke. right now, one lane of route 623 is back open. work will continue later this morning to remove

other lane back up and running. an update to a death investigation we first told you about yesterday on good day virginia. police have identifed the man who was found dead inside his home on monday in the 5-hundred block of westwood boulevard. right now, police are still investigating martavious ra'shad cook's cause of death. so far no arrests have been made and police say the investigation is ongoing. in pittsylvania county: a former jail employee has been indicted for having a sexual relationship with an inmate. 49-year-old sharon mckensie is facing 3 feloniy charges. investigators say she worked in the pittsylvania county jail-- kitchen. mckensie was arrested last week and released on bond, her next court appearence is set for march 3rd. wfxr news is your local election headquarters, and fresh off winning the republican caucus in nevada, donald trump spoke at regent university in virginia beach on tuesday. the billionaire front runner sat down for a one-on-one interview with regent founder and televangelist pat robertson. trump spoke on a variety of topics including

in botetourt county-the group pushing to stop two historic slave dwellings from being relocated-- say they are planning another protest at the site tomorrow morning. a representative from the friends of greenfield preston plantation group says the county's actions -- during the past few days prompted the protest. the group made a proposal to the county--- that would allow the buildings to stay at their original location. one of the buildings was relocated earlier this week, the second slave dwelling is scheduled to be

during black history month we celebrate the achievements of blacks in america.but african- american contributions to the roanoke valley often go untold. there is a group leading the charge to make sure the roanoke's black history is persevered and presented to the masses.tonight we go inside of the harrison museum to learn more about the achievements and struggles of roanoke's black residents during the 18-hundreds. 32-43 it's roanoke history, hanging on a wall.the exhibits inside the harrison museum - ---tells the story of black men and women who helped build up their community during the most difficult times.the black history museum was founded in 1985 and depends on the help of volunteers to operate. its always been about people who volunteer who understood it was important to maintain historycharles price is one of about 100 volunteers who give their time to make sure roanoke's black history is on display and preserved. its not a job its a responsibility to help bring forth history.in the late 18-hundreds--

the harrison museum is in the center of the square in downtown roanoke.the exhibits the cover the entire african- american experience from slavery to black music icons. they curators say-- they only have touch the surface of roanoke's black history. but often times they don't have funding to dig deeper because they rely on donations and some grants to operate.
