the 40th first night here in boston at copley square. as i step aside, you can see the ice sculptures. no specific threat to the city, vigilance is key and what they are trying to get out with their message their messaging. first night here at copley square in boston common. focused on keeping revelers safe. that n a live studio interview on fox25 yesterday, the city believes it has a good security plan in place. so expect uniformed and undercover officers to saturate the streets and t station. and for bomb sniffing jobs to be working as well. >> a lot of undercover officers and assets hitting the way, but i am confident and encourage like any event, if they see something out of the ordinary

>> reporter: preparations for today's fun continue this morning and will throughout the day as the revelers do start heading down to the city center here. we will continue to update you on the plan and give you helpful information about the timeline of these first night events in our report coming up at 5:30. so stay with us for that. for now i am reporting live on this new year's eve in copley square, michael henrich, fox25 morning news. of course times square is ready for the big party. new york city officials promise that the big apple will be one of safest places to ring in 20 of safest places to ring in 2015. crews can set up barricades and police checkpoints. a million people will gather in times square to see the annual ball drop alongside 5,000 police officers. overseas, brussels have cancelled their new year's eve fireworks display because of threats of an attack. the mayor of belgium's capital made the decision after meeting with law enforcement.

last year's festivities and the mayor said no way to check anyone. new this morning the mbta sunday fire again for failing to properly maintain an aging rail system. >> comes from a federal report that outlines how the t could have done better. live at the oak grove station where maintenance work is commonplace. jess? >> reporter: that investigation, julie, found a number of issues with the t, mainly with its maintenance plan and services for disabled riders. we are live at the oak grove station in malden and this station was named specifically in the report saying right now it is not accessible at all for disabled people. this all comes days after the first real winter storm test of the t. people are starting to wonder if they can avoid repeat approximating the night their we experienced last february. the report was done by the federal transit administration and a mbta spokesperson told the "globe" it will take more than $7 billion to get the mbta

among the problems that the agency found is that the mbta lacked maintenance plan for sub lacked maintenance plan for subway and trolley tracks. the ride which is the door the ride which is the door-to-door service for disabled riders and boston harbor cruises which is the operator of the mbta ferry boats. now the mbta starts running at oak grove, the orange line at 5 oak grove, the orange line at 5:15. in just about 45 minutes, we will be speaking to riders throughout the morning and hearing from them over the next couple of hours here on the fox25 morning news. for now we are live at oak grove in malden, jessica reyes, fox25 news. a new report shows boston has fewer murders and more convictions than other cities its size. police reported 14 fewer homicides in the hub this year. officers investigated 54 murders in 2014 and 40 in 2015. of those cases, 80% resulted in conviction conviction. 10% more than the national average. and governor charlie baker is preparing for his first state of the commonwealth address. it will be thursday, january 21.

his priorities for 2016 including addressing the opioid crisis in our state, creating more jobs, and, of course, the budget. it is now 4:36. a local mom shaken up after a man nearly broken into her home while she was inside with her little boy. that man tried to get in by busting through the ac unit. it happened at her home in west broadway and boston getting her 2-year-old ready for bed. she heard the man trying to come through the window, she fought back. >> i looked out and i saw a guy >> i looked out and i saw a guy. he was like, rahh! he was pushing in my ac at the same time i was pushing it out toward him. >> julie: she said the man eventually walked away and police do have someone in custody this morning. a man that drove his car into a pond in hamilton will be in court. this is breaking on the fox25 morning news yesterday. our cameras were there as james chase walked out of the hamilton police station. he was drunk, speeding stand not have headlights on when the

chase was not hurt and the car was pulled from the pond a short time later. roads in the a area were slick when the accident happened. police on the cape are searching for a yarmouth man reported missing 11 days ago. william fleming's family said he was last seen driving a pick he was last seen driving a pickup truck. they found it abeen a dodded eight days later and aggressively searching the area ever since. update on charges in the san bernandino massacre. the friend accused of providing an assault weapon to one of the suspects has been indicted. enrique marquez has been charged with lying in the attack that left 14 people dead. they say he planned terrorist attacks with syed farook in 20 attacks with syed farook in 2011 and 2012 but never carried them out. as of this morning marquez has not entered a plea. bill cosby is out on $1 million bail.

on the ice to get it back. after a few steps he fell through the surface. the fire chief said the man went in to his knees and he was able to get it out on his own. >> the little thing on the ice is only a half inch thick. it is not safe. stay off the ice. >> catherine: fire fighters recommend flying drones over fields and other open areas to avoid getting into a dangerous situation. worcester city manager admits that the city should have done a better job preparing for the snow. listed on the official twitter said the city did not have enough dpw and plows to deal with the freezing rain. many of the streets were covered in slush and ice. to fix the problem, crews in worcester were salting the roads all day yesterday. the ice is ready and the anticipation is building for tomorrow's winter classic between the bruins and canadians at gillette stadium. this afternoon familiar faces from both teams will hit the ice for the winter classic

21 minutes from 495 to the leverett connector. 24 minutes on 128 from route 1 in peabody to the weston tolls. station storm tracker weather meteorologist shiri spear joining us and we have a little bit of fog and ice on the roads to deal with as well. >> shiri: we do not in the boston area. no ice there but the suburbs north and west appear a few slippery spots. the untreated roads right now. this is a system that will be pushing aby a from us until about 7 a.m. and it is going to pull away any lingering rain showers by 10:00 this morning. we are dry and we get to tap into on and off clouds. the system to the north will stay to the north. so 10:00 this morning. as i mentioned, showers are out and look what is happening with these clouds beginning to break apart. it is not like we will bust out in full sunshine today but it will be bright from time to time. on and off clouds, especially after noontime today. you can see we are bright, every now and then and stays dry all the way through midnight and that means quiet

plans. 34 degrees right now in boston itself. visibility, yeah, down to one mile with the fog out there. fog lingering through 9, 10:00 this morning before lifting for good. though i don't expect we will have a lot of dense fog out there. hey, this is your next couple of hours in boston. temperatures kind of low here at 6 a.m. i expect that we are still going to be in the middle 30s at 6:00 this morning in the city. 37 at 8 a.m. by 10 a.m. 39 degrees and temperatures that will be in the low to mid-40s this afternoon. here is a look at high temperatures around town. if you were looking for hot spots going into southeastern massachusetts. plymouth at 46. 47 in carver and bridgewater. mattapoisett and new bedford. 48 49 degrees in taunton. you can compare that to the fact we have most of central massachusetts, north of worcester stuck in the 30s. it will only be 39 in worcester this afternoon. 38 in gardner and athol.
