we start with fox 25 meteorologist sarah wroblewski. we're already seeing some 0 temperatures out there without >> exactly. that doesn't even factor in the experiencing right now. that's why we have a windchill warning for the majority of southern new england. a windchill advisory for the cape and islands. this goes from now until noon tomorrow, but take a look at these current temperatures. we are just at 1 degree in boston. minus 7, though, in places like minus 4 in nashua. it is sub-0 to the north and west. beverly's coming in just under 0, too. you factor in that wind, and this is what it feels like. it feels like it is 20 to 30 below in many locations and we're dealing with that current wind right now that's gonna continue to be quite gusty. gusts over 30 miles per hour, will continue overnight adding to that temperature. so if you're gonna be out, this is what you can expect. the temperature falling back below 0 in boston. staying below 0, i should say,
but look at the windchill value. back to the negative 20, negative 30, very, very cold conditions. by the time you wake up, you'll see that sunshine. we'll see some improvement, but we could be talking about record-low temperatures for valentine's day. currently the record low in boston is 3 below. in worcester, it's 11 below. i do think we will be breaking these records. we're gonna take a closer look at when we actually warm up and our next chance of snow coming up in just a little bit. >> our team coverage continues with christine mccarthy who's in worcester tonight where it feels like it's 30 below 0. >> standing out here in worcester tonight is only bearable for a couple of minutes. frostbite a very real possibility, and doctors are already seeing cases. >> very cold. >> the strongest windchills will be tonight through tomorrow morning, and this region of central mass will be among the coldest in the state of massachusetts. in worcester, christine mccarthy, fox 25 news. as the temperatures drop to dangerous levels, warming centers are now open across the state. right now there are 38 people staying at the warming shelter in lowell. well, today we spoke with a woman who told us that her family had been sleeping in their car, but it was so cold that ice was forming inside. >> there's ice in the car. there was no lying down flat. just sitting up. >> reporter: the warming center is inside the lowell senior center on 276 broadway street, and it's going to stay open until monday morning. if you'd like to find a list of warming centers around the region, you can head to myfoxboston.com. of course, some people can't avoid being out in the cold on nights like this, we'll have more on that ahead in our next half-hour. in the meantime, stay informed about the forecast.
25 morning news. we start at 6:00 a.m., and meteorologist jason brewer will be here track the freezing temps right out through 10:00. we continue to follow breaking news out of texas tonight. since news of superior court's justice antonin scalia's death broke, politicians have been paying tribute to the late justice. flags are being lowered at the superior court to half-staff to pay tribute to the 79-year-old. and in the past two hours, president obama announced he during his presidency. >> i plan to fulfill my constitutional responsibilities to nominate a successor in due time. there will be plenty of time for me to do so and for the senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing and a timely vote. >> for more on the life of justice saleh back we turn to kristen fisher who's in washington tonight. >> reporter: the longest serving justice on the superior court

the bench. remember, to stay with fox 25 on air and online for continuing coverage of justice scalia's death. the horror of how a teacher has died has not nun. a manhole cover flew up and crashed through her windshield. robert ghoulston spent the day with some of the victim's friends, who just can't believe what happened. >> reporter: the 35-year-old art teacher was on her way to work here at glovers school in milton when this happened. today grief counselors were there helping the community cope with what happened to her. >> she was just a good teammate. >> reporter: caitlin liked winning. >> a good reason and really will be missed. >> reporter: and making people happy. >> she was always happy. >> she had a smile that would, you know, light up a room. >> reporter: her recent love, triathlons. sherman roberts was training with her. >> just very hard to reconcile that this kind of thing can happen. >> reporter: the 35-year-old was
to her other passion, teaching art to the third-graders at milton elementary schools. she loved the kids. >> reporter: state police says a 200 manhole cover somehow went airborne and crashed through caitlin's windshield. her car came to a stop just outside the o'neill tunnel on the southbound side of the expressway. she died from the injuries. >> it still hasn't soaked in. i mean, a little bit, but i can still like hear her laughing. she had one of those laughs, she could bottle it up and sell it on the street and make money because it was so awesome. >> reporter: thousand happened still a mystery. mass-dot immediately checked more than 900 similar manhole covers and out of an abundance of precaution, some minor work was done to about 65 of them. and while friends say they never understand the tragedy, they say memories of their friend live on. >> we're all crushed by it, at the same time, we're all celebrating her life.
the focus now, trying to figure out exactly how that manhole cover ended up in the air. in milton, robert ghoulston, fox 25 news. >> a man is under arrest charged with assaulting a police officer. according to a news release, the officer was responding to a domestic call when attacked. the teen is not being identified. firefighters say they didn't have any trouble with hydrants battling a house fire today, despite the low temperatures. flames broke out this afternoon on butler street. several people inside at the time but everyone was able to make it out safely. the cause of that fire is under investigation. search is on tonight for the driver police say hit a teenager with his truck on purpose. it happened yesterday on lawrence street in lowell. witnesses tell police that the 15-year-old was on a bike and was arguing with the driver just before the crash. officers say the white pickup truck that was seen in that video then crossed the road and hit the teen. the truck has been found, but the driver is still on the loose. the victim is expected to survive.
armed robber busted trying to blend in at a barge just a few doors down from -- bar just a few doors down from the store that he robbed. officers say he robbed beacon hill variety in boston and 20 to a nearby pub to change. officers found him sitting at the bar and arrested him. the temps are in the single digits but people are still out tonight. some by choice, some by force. record-breaking cold moving in along with strong winds, creating dangerous windchills overnight. my timeline and when we climb above freezing. the first caught on camera, a man's pocket suddenly explodes. >> i was looking down and see all the smoke on the table and
hernandez is already serving life in prison for the death old inlloyd. an explosion sends the man running and screaming and tonight he's sharing his story about the scare that sent him to the hospital. >> reporter: the explosion was caught on surveillance video, minutes after 26-year-old matthew gillson arrived to work last month. he is now down a long road of recovery and says he's speaking out so this doesn't happen to others. >> i was looking down, see all the the smoke on the table and just so confused as to what it is. >> reporter: gillson says he been using his e cigarette for about a month hoping to kick his smoking habit. but just after starting his shift as a machinist he says somehow the badry in his pocket exploded. >> i realize the smoke shooting out of my hands. so i instantly grabbed my hand in my pant -- my pants and ran out. >> reporter: in the video you can see gillson running. what you can't hear, he says, screaming. >> that's actually the battery there. >> his attorneys say their suit is against the manufacturer in china and in the store smokers haven in laconia, new hampshire. neither responded to our request. >> they say don't use if you're pregnant, this could kill you,
