antap into youcuriosity. the laughing cow. invent snacking. this morning on "today's take," chris rock under pressure. should the oscar host boycott this year's awards? and then we'll catch up with one of the stars of the new de niro film "dirty grandpa" and the tributes are pouring in for glenn frey as we remember the eagles legend. all that and more coming up now. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today's take" with al roker, natalie morales, willie geist and tomorrow ron hall live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> 18. and it feels colder. >> up from 16. >> the mercury is rising. welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning.
10:01 am
january 19, 2016. poor souls. come on inside. >> the last hour brought the fans in. put them back out for our hour. >> let's get the four of them. >> the hardy souls. >> come on in, guys. >> go get them. >> our produce adam miller. >> they are coming in, folks. >> come on inside. >> now you're listening, of course, to "hotel california" by the eagles. again, another rock legend in the space of a week or so glenn frey died at the age of 67. one of the founding members, of course, of the eagles. he died in new york city. hits like "hotel california," witchy woman," you can go on and on and on and the band has said for the past several weeks frey was battling complications from rheumatoid arthritis and pneumonia and hasn't been in the best of health. eagles, five number one hits, six grammys, five american music awards and sold more albums than any american band in history.
10:02 am
jackson, people have done better, but no band in american history has sold more albums. glenn frey also, by the way, came up a little later saying "the heat is on." when i first dialed in and worked backward. >> "beverly hills cop." >> right. >> a great soundtrack. >> and the mtv time for us. >> exactly. >> we were lyrics okay, the world is bigger than my neighborhood and he was a part of the world through mtv. >> "miami vice". >> had a little recurring role. >> and the egles is what he'll be remembered for along with don henley and they were american music in the 1970s so we're very sad to report his passing. >> you came up a couple of years after us. >> a couple. >> just a couple. >> but "hotel california" takes me back to when i was living in spain and hanging out with my friends at a club. >> and that music was so much. it was radio music. >> yeah. >> you listened to that in your
10:03 am
that sing-along kind of music. >> that's the great part of the eagles and his career. for you it's radio music, for us it's mtv. over the holidays my nephew isaiah who is 19, we were sitting around just the two of us, and we started playing, you know, the best of the eagles, and i'm explaining to him and before i knew it "hotel california ""blasting because you can't listen to it low. way too low and you just escape. >> "peaceful's feeling." >> and they had such legs with their popularity. they were asked to get back together for a reunion tour in the '90s and they said who is going to come see a bunch of old guys play and they say they walked out, after they were convinced, first showers, and there were 75,000 people and i guess there's another generation who want to hear our music. >> tour upped to july of last year. >> they had to postpone. supposed to be in the kennedy center honors and unfortunately because of glenn frey's health. he'll certainly be missed. also missed, actors of color who were nominated for an academy
10:04 am
none, so here are all the nominees, okay. there you go. for best actor, supporting actor, supporting actress and day after last week's nominations oscar host chris rock tweeting the oscars oscars -- #oscars, the white b.e.t. awards. since then two a-listers have said they were not going to go to the event, of course, jada pinkett smith one of them. posted this video on youtube talking about her friend, host chris rock. >> begging for acknowledgement or even asking diminishes dignity and diminishes power. hey, chris, i will not be at the academy awards and i won't be watching, but i can't think of a better man to do the job at hand this year than you, my friend. good luck. >> it's interesting because a lot of people, there's been some pressure on chris rock to
10:05 am
>> to drop out of hosting. >> to drop out from hosting because i think he'll address those issues. >> neil patrick harris address it had the last time around, and now chris rock will likely obviously do the same thing. the question is will this always be addressed as the joke in the monologue because i know people keep saying chris rock will make them listen. enhas did it as well and trevor noah, i love his show, had the funniest joke, "straight out of compton," a hip-hop movie and the two best people nominate were white and "creed," black director, black lead, black supporting actress and the one person nominated is white, sill vestier stallone and brilliant in that, and i think those movies aside this is a conventional wisdom, conventional conversation that indress alba, a lot of people
10:06 am
white guy may not get "straight out of compton," it should be because that's what you do for a living, you are a theater person. you are a movie person but like a performance that stops you in your tracks with a brilliant story, brilliant cinematography i think people are really honing in and asking why. >> they will have to change the makeup of the academy, and i think -- >> do you think that's the problem. >> >> i do think that's the problem, absolutely. those are the people who vote, and i think sheryl -- president cheryl boone isaacs responded and says she's heartbroken and frustrated. as many of you know we've implemented changes to diversify our membership. change is not coming as fast as you like and we need to do more better and quickly. >> i worry about that because that implies that if the art looks like you that's the only art you're understanding and they are saying 60-year-old white guys but these are people who work in that industry. it's not as if they went to the waffle house in burleson, texas and recruited the 70-year-old cook there.
10:07 am
in that industry that's seen as the most liberal bastion of our country. i'm asking. >> are they diverse, and obviously not enough and so they have to start, the industry itself, has to start bringing in more diversity, i mean, all kinds of diversity to that industry so that they have a bigger pool to pick from. >> well, clearly it's such an important issue, and it is -- it has divided the academy and its members so they have to do something about it and they are addressing it. >> it would be nice to see a few non-african-american on non-color actors speak out, jessica chastain did a great speech last year where she did a >> absolutely. >> on the chris rock question, think about the impact. what has a bigger impact, him staying at home or on a stage in front of 100 million people around the world for ten minutes and making a commentary and also coming from him, a guy who has got a lifetime behind him of commentary about justice and
10:08 am
that's the thrust of what he talks about. >> he's perfect person to be front and center on the issue and to be able to talk about it. february 28. >> front and center with steve harvey. >> gave you a little preview yesterday and more now today. he sat down with miss columbia to talk about the mistake that made world headlines, as you know, when he incorrectly named her miss universe last month and i asked steve about the night before the pageant. there were suggestions you were out drinking and gambling in vegas the night before. >> i've never been drunk a day in my life. do i gamble in vegas i? gamble in vegas all the time but i was as rehearsal. did a full run-through with everybody, perfectly. >> what was it that was hardest for new all that have. >> with all the support that i got, the hate was pretty intense. >> you said you had death threats. >> oh, man. >> from columbia? >> i won't be going over there
10:09 am
>> yeah. >> he's the best. >> probably a wise man. >> you've got more. tomorrow. my full conversation with steve harvey and miss columbia including harvey's explanation what have happened that night, how he actually made the mistake. part two of steve harvey's today with miss columbia airs tomorrow as well. channel. >> we've began given weird job assignments. what's the weirdest thing you've been asked to do? >> here, caught me off guard. nothing odd. >> everything you do is odd. >> i wouldn't call it weird but natalie and i washed a guy on a tight rope across the grand canyon, that was exciting weird. >> we've been dunked in stuff and asked to do things. up. weirdest things i've been asked to do is escort our next guest in. i've been asked to do this, so willie and al, i have a surprise for you. oh -- well, how could you miss

10:18 am
>> a mosquito-borne illness. there was a case in hawaii recently as well. >> importantly the case reported over the weekend from hawaii was the first case of a child born in this country with microceph ha ly, with documentation that the mother had probably contracted zika virus, but, importantly, the virus was acquired abroad and imported into a had a. this was not a locally acquired infection and that's important. we still don't have any evidence of that occurring in the continental united states. we go. ct scans, reports says more people are getting them. why is that significant? >> right. the numbers are actually quite staggering, i think twice as many cat scans are being perform in the last ten years. the main significant issue here is radiation. radiation and cost. cat scans are fantastic modalities. they give a lot of information about the inside of the body, particularly bone. are there other tests that can be run in lieu of a cat scan that do not pose that radiation
10:19 am
example but in an emergency room or urgent care setting when you need information very quickly they prove incredibly useful. they are expensive and insurance needs to approve it and the issue is radiation. if the doctor says would i like to perform a cat scan is request number one is it necessary and, number two, is there an alternative diagnostic test that scan? sometimes the cat scan is the right test but not always. >> great summary on all the health issues. azar. >> come up, got to star alongside robert de niro and got to chris zach if you're looking to save money on your medicare part d prescriptions, walgreens says, carpe med diem. seize the day to get more out of life and medicare part d. just switch to walgreens for savings that'll be the highlight of your day. now preview the cost of your copay before you fill.
