strong storms blowing through the area overnight doing some major damage causing trouble for many of you headed off to work and school. >> high school senior killed in a tragic crash. remembering a life lost. and a dog found injured overseas getting a second chance thanks to some special people here in the u.s. everyone. thanks for joining us. serious wind damage for a lot of people. in dorchester this tree blew over on to house. when you consider the wind gust up to 70 miles per hour at least in boston.
you start getting 50, 60 to close to 70. the peek of the wind generally around 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning including boston. just shy in of it in the city. braintree 64. 83-mile-an-hour wind gust. now winds right now a lot lighter than they were early this morning. only gusting to about 25. we'll see the winds pick back up a little bit throughout the afternoon. there's a wind advisory down through southeastern mass cape and island for gust 40 to 50 this afternoon. thunderstorms over the cape now just to east there and you can see this is some quiet time for the next several hours the best weather we'll have all day long really over the next few hours. then midafternoon late afternoon a couple of these instability showers start to work on in as temperature start to work back down mid 50s to near 60 right now. we'll drop back towards 50 degrees for the afternoon. and anytime midafternoon through
shot of scattered showers starting to roll back in. not the severe weather we saw early this morning. wet weather especially north and west of boston this afternoon. >> breaking news the strong storms knocking out power to thousands of people in massachusetts. winds sending trees tumbling like this one in cam cambridge that crushed a car. let's go to victoria warren in dorchester where this tree smashed right into this family's home. we have the sound of chain saws in dorchester. they've removed so much of this tree. this family they were home at the time. and this morning they feel very lucky. i hear boom. >> so loud ronald henry said it
>> i called my wife. tree dropped on the house. the tree towered 50 feet into the air now it's a mess of branches and debris damaging the dorchester home and cars. it came down during the intense storm. >> there was wind and rain. damage not just indorchester in cambridge a tree crushed cars. no one was hurt. in natick downed power lines shutdown part of route 9 and in marshfield a tree blocked the road at one point nearly the entire town was without power. back in dorchester they are thankful cleanup is the only thing they are dealing with. we were lucky, very, very lucky. saying the tree fell in a way to make the damage minimal. god just take away the tree. nobody got hurt. nobody got hurt. >> very thankful for that indeed. now that they've removed the

landed on a car and caused it to catch fire. 60-mile-an-hour wind bringing down wind in that area. powerful winds are also being blamed for this side. it happened on the george washington bridge in new york. and storm system also leaving a deadly path. crews in pennsylvania searching all night for people who were home. let's go to jennifer eagon with the latest. this spawned dozens of tornadoes. 8 people have been killed since tuesday. one a toddler. tens of thousands of people in the mid atlantic waking up with with out power. powerful storm brought more devastation. heavy rain caused problem in washington, d.c. parking garage flooded with water reaching the curb. the cleanup process is just
at least four tornadoes tore through that state, roofs were ripped off of homes. while no serious injuries were reported there it was different story in virginia. tornado cut a six-mile wide path of drugtion. officials call it a mass casualty event as more that 20 people suffered critical injury. witnesses saw three twisters. >> we were in the middle of the house when it came through. it just demolished everything. the church is gone. a lot of people hurt down there. >> about 90 miles away. several people died when a tornado hit the town of waverly, a small child. all you could see is all the fire. the victims waverly; 50, 26 and 2-year-old boy. virginia state police say the
yards from their mobile home. 7news "today in new england." bad weather being claimed for a teen tragedy in barry. the community in mourning as the 17-year-old girl loses control of her car on an icy road. john cocoa live in barry with more. we understand her brother was injured in the car crash as well. >> he was. police say there was black ice and slush out on the roads yesterday morning. causing a number of crashes including the one that killed that 17-year-old girl. >> friends say britney merch outgoing and popular. senior and honor-roll student. where she was also a cross-country runner. >> she was very smart and nice. she was a lot of fun. >> whenever i saw britney she was always smiling and she always looked pretty happy. she was good student. its honest her way to school wednesday after two-hour delay
she lost control of her car on route 62 and crashed into a tree. police say she was killed. her younger brother a freshman at the high school was seriously hurt. >> there was a two-hour delay dow to weather conditions. and we believe that the roadway was in some spots covered with black ice or slush. >> no one knew at the beginning. toward the end of the day people started to find out and people were just crying and they didn't know what to say. >> right now family and friends say they are all trying to support each other and the merch family as they mourn this tragic loss. she has a lot of friends. i think everyone just needs to come together regardless if you knew her or not. just show their friends and other people you are there for

she was known as baby doe for months ago investigators searched for her identity. the mother living inside the house of squaller in blackstone due back in court one week after a judge refused to dismiss murder charges against her. erika murray charged in the death of two infants, their bodies found inside the home. the police say the body of a third childs discovered inside. >> the danvers teenager found guilty of girling math teacher will learn his faith. he will find fate. he must be eligible for parole. house. republican presidential candidates facing off in texas tonight. donald trump coming off his win in the nevada caucus. but now fielding criticism from mitt romney. romney questioning why trump isn't releasing his tax returns. the reason i think there's a

the rain and the wind boston gusting close to 70 miles an hour early this morning. right around 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. anytime you see a dot on this map these are all the storm reports from wind damage whether it's tree getting knocked down. tree branches getting knocked down or other wind damage. it was widespread here across southern new england. a lot quieter right now. the thunderstorms we had earlier this morning across the cape now offshore. in its wake trying to break out of sunshine across eastern mass. we've had success getting the sunshine back especially west of the city of boston. however the sunshine not shining all day long. you take a look to west of us. there's some scattered showers back through upstate new york. still some instability to swung on through this afternoon. and i think that will provide us some more cloud cover and more scattered showers this afternoon. look at the temperatures though nothing said spring like stepping outside in 60-degree weather.
feels like it's here. wind out of south at 15. steady breeze out of the south still. we will cool down later today. i can't complete leigh rule out some showers. especially this afternoon. through lunch we're fine. 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon through 4:00 or 5:00 some scattered showers start to break back out. and that will continue this evening. especially north and west of boston i think you are more prone the further north and west you go to catch showers. temperature falling into the upper 20s to lower 30 thanks to great lakes. that cool air with us as we start off the weekend. 60 to 50 today as temperatures slowly slide back down. couple of scattered showers this afternoon. isolated even shower mostly cloudy and cooler tonight in cooler and breezy day overall tomorrow. and for more on this forecast and how cold it gets. now over to danielle.
big impact on bringing that cold air in. we do still have wind advisory. this in effect until 7:00 tonight. we could still see strong wind gust getting up to 50 miles per hour as we head into this afternoon heading into 5:00 or 6:00 when we see that second round of showers possibly move in. that's when we see strong wind peek again. not as strong as overnight. we could see gust up to 50 miles per hour. as wehead into overnight hours. notice the winds shift. now they are out of the west. they are starting to calmdown. they are breezy throughout the day tomorrow. what this will do. it will help bring in the cooler air as we head into the next couple day. by tomorrow the temperature around freezing. this is much cooler than it's been. and then by saturday morning we're talking about temperatures waking up to temperatures in the teens. the cooler air is moving in. and the wind will start to die down over the next couple of day. back to you. that cold air is short-lived. we're talking about weekend warm up.

many of those in new jersey and new york. in the news ram. jennifer eagan. 7news "today in new england." also on 7 we're hearing from two women who have tracked down a missing mother from holbrooke. judy was found alive and well in waterford connecticut on wednesday. one of her high school friend saw a facebook post that her cell phone was last tracked to connecticut. she shared the post, asked her friendings to keep an eye out and one of those friends did just that. >> i will drive around and go look at see if i can spot her car or see her. the last place i went was the mall. there was her car. i look as devine intervention coupled with the power of social media and friendship. sales was taken to hospital to be checked out. they haven't said why she was in connecticut. police officer cited for taking a dangerous drive.
bicyclist and then drove off. here's 7 brandon gunnoe where the reaction from cambridge. a cambridge police officers has now been cited for hit-and-run. that's sent a women to the hospital. it's devastating. ryan is by all accounts a decorated police officer. for the short time he's been with us. an air force veteran has been with the force since 2011. sunday night while off duty he hit a women riding a bicycle and didn't stop. investigator say the 32-year-old woman didn't do anything wrong. as far as we know she was doing everything she could do. she had lighting. reflective clothing. and she had her arm out. witnesses took down the license plate and that's what left police. he's cited with leaving the seen of personal injure and operating to endanger a misdemeanor. the department quick to say it's a fair and balanced investigation.
hit-and-run accident for us. even if this wasn't ryan we would follow the same course. that officer is on paid administrative leave until an investigation is complete. the victim has since been released from the hospital. in cambridge, brandon gunnoe. 7news "today in new england." officials are stopping construction on the wynn casino in everett. the company said the city of summerville forced the decision. summerville's mayor is appealing and environmental permit for the new 1.7 billion casino. he said traffic and pollution issues are his major concern. wheneverrit's president use a deal has been signed. >> there's massive development going on right across the river and why is it okay on that side of the river when it's not okay on this side of the river. the mayor said he's not going to back down because this
