>> this is 7 news at noon. >> sarah: breaking news. a salem, massachusetts man turns himself in to pol his wife. welcome to 7 news at noon, everybody. i'm sarah french. >> kris: i'm kris anderson. the man walked into the salem police department just after 3:30 this morning. he is now facing charges in court. we want to get out live to 7's john cuoco. he is in salem. what is the latest here? >> reporter: well, kris, right now, police are still on scene investigating here. if you take a look behind me here, you can see some investigators. a salem police squad. along with crime scene tape up in front of this house here.

did have a restraining order against her husband. >> woke up this morning. you know, someone was murdered near me. it is like, what do i do? >> i'm still kind of like shaken up a little bit. it was still pretty shocking. >> reporter: neighbors feeling uneasy after a 48-year-old woman was killed in this home on chandler street in salem. >> it is a quiet neighborhood. >> reporter: salem the woman woman's estranged husband walked into the station around 3:40 tuesday morning and told officers he killed his wife. the d.a.'s office says the woman was strangled. she was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. >> i tried contact her last night, too. she wouldn't call me back. >> reporter: the 50-year-old suspect is being charged with murder. >> i know he is abusive. and he is a bully. >> reporter: and that suspect is set to face a judge. within the next couple of

live in salem, john cuoco, 7 news. >> kris: new at noon, another big story we are following. a dentist in worcester called to court after alarming accusations of sexual assault. police say he inappropriately touched a female patient. apparently, it happened during a procedure on monday morning. >> the patient got up from the chair, went to the police station to file a report. victoria warren live now in worcester with the details. vicky? >> reporter: yes. this patient told police that she has been seeing this de but she did feel the need to get up in the middle of her appointment yesterday and go directly to the police department. the police met with this dentist at his dental practice. that is where he was arrested. accused of indecent assault in a dental chair. a woman told worcester police her longtime dentist dr. nikhil patel grabbed her breast four times during an exam. >> she was now very much in

>> reporter: the 54-year-old dentist entering a not guilty plea in court after he was arrested at his practice where a sign advertises "we cater to cowards." his lawyer says he has never been in trouble before. his lawyer says they are looking to see if cameras inside the practice could help in the investigation but says health privacy laws limit what he can currently say in dr. patel's defense h. he is saddened by the has made. and of course, the charges are serious. we take them very seriously. and he is going to vigorously defend himself in this court and in any other forum that charges him with any offenses having to do with the care of this individual. >> reporter: the dentist is out on a $1,000 bail. and the judge ordered him to stay away from his patient. live in worcester, victoria

police commissioner bill bratton stepping down. mayor bill de blasio is expected to make it official at a noontime conference. he has been on the job for three years. this is bratton's second stint as commissioner. he was head of the force under rudy giuliani. bratton served as the boston police chief commissioner before that. >> kris: now let's take a look outside. another kind of gray gloomy day. there is some rain in s we want to get over to danielle gersh with a first look at the forecast. is the sun going to pop out at all today? >> danielle: it is this afternoon, >> kris:. the showers are pushing through boston, moving offshore knew. they have been tracking east. most of the steady shower activity right now from braintree up to the pike and up inside the 128 belt right now. this stretches down along the south shore. some heavy rain actually moving over nantucket and martha's vineyard.

as we head into this afternoon, we will continue to see the rain showers tapering off. any isolated showers we see after lunchtime into 3:00 this afternoon will be south of boston. current temperatures outside, upper 6's into the low 70's. another day of below-average temperatures. as we see, the sunshine poke through this afternoon, we will warm temperatures up into the mid to upper 70's. more on the forecast coming up. >> sarah: children are going back to a boston summeram at the camp. 7-year-old kyzr willis disappeared eight days ago. his body was later found in the water. byron barnett is live from south boston now with more. byron? >> reporter: well, one week after the tragic death of the young boy here at the curley community center day camp. the mood is somber as the camp reopens and the kids return. now, behind me here, you can

for the little boy. teddy bears, flowers and other items put here. the 7-year-old apparently wandered away from the camp unnoticed last week. his body was discovered in the water hours later. no foul play suspected. it is considered an accidental drowning. the camp reopened today, new rules have been put in order. put in place by order of the mayor. the rules include an hourly head count of all campers. no more than ten any time. and children must wear life preservers. now, the program here at the curley community center on carson beach is one of 21 summer camps run by the city. a wake will be held tomorrow. funeral scheduled for thursday. we are told that the number of kids here at the camp today is down just slightly on this rainy tuesday.

barnett, 7 news. >> kris: we are hearing now from the secret service agent who was critically injured in a deadly car crash in new hampshire back in december of last year. garrett fitzgerald speaking out as he was honored at a charity event in ipswich. fitzgerald suffered a spinal cord injury when an unlicensed driver slammed head-on into his car last december in wakefield, new hampshire. that driver was killed in the accident. fitzgerald was working as part of a dem hillary clinton's protective detail at the time of the crash. he says the support of his community has helped him tremendously. >> it has gotten me through the really tough days. tough times. and made my recovery what it is right now. stale long road to go. you know, this community has been absolutely amazing. i couldn't have asked for

>> kris: fitzgerald was presented with a check for $0,000. >> sarah: this just in: five people are dead after an early-morning bus crash in central california. authorities say the bus was headed from southern california to sacramento. when it swerved for some reason, and then struck a pole. aerials of the scene show the pole slice through the bus. at least 30 people, including the driver were on the bus. >> kris: in the race for the are out today. they show hillary clinton is now on top. an nbc news survey monkey poll has her leading donald trump 50% to 42%. the swing coming after the democratic national convention. there was no significant bump for donald trump after the rnc. in a new poll, clinton gets a 7-point convention bump, leading donald trump in a head-to-head match-up. 52% to 4%. that is far from the only

political parties criticizing the republican nominee for comments he made about a family whose son was killed in iraq. >> thank you both very much. >> reporter: donald trump facing more back-lash over comments about a muslim family who spoke during the democratic convention. now gold-star families are demanding an apology from the presidential nominee. including massachusetts congressman seth moulton who served in iraq. the group which includes abo arredondo sent a letter to trump, asking for an apology. trump not done with his commercial comments. at a rally in pennsylvania yesterday, he had choice words for his opponent hillary clinton. while talking about bernie sanders. >> if he would have not done anything, go home, go to sleep, relax, he would have been a hero. but he made a deal with the

>> kris: some wild weather video. wait until you see this. fierce lightning strikes caught on camera in baton rouge. the bolts of lightning there will be lightning storms in the city for the rest of the week. you see something like. that you run back inside. >> sarah: thunder roars. head indoors. i kept telling my family that. if lightning strikes, i don't know. i was trying to think of one, danielle. >> danielle: i don't know what the rhyme is for that. head indoors as well. we watched a few lightning strikes today as well. mainly across new york and southern connecticut. none here. we did see some shower activity. mainly just beneficial

really need, though. we have some reports of minor flooding. out towards springfield. all this rain has been a welcome thing. i think sunshine will start to poke through this afternoon. and for tomorrow, sunshine will return. then we are going to warm things up as we head into the week. we have been watchinging if all of this moisture kind of pushing east across massachusetts throughout the morning. and right now, all of the rain is pretty much focused inside 128. so from braintree up along the pike, basically, up to route 93, steady. it is not too heavy in nature. it will continue to move offshore and push east as we head into this afternoon. also seeing some pretty steady rain along the south shore and martha's vineyard and nantucket. that is where some of the heavier rain is. you see those darker shades of green and yellow there. that is some of the heavier stuff. of course, it is much-needed rain that we need. so looking ahead. we head into this afternoon. i think any more showers that we do see develop will be down across southeast massachusetts.

notice 4:00 here. heading into 5:00. the sunshine will start to peek through. and help warm up those temperatures, too. so this stalled front is going to push offshore. what's going to help do that is this area of high pressure that is going to start to drop south and build into the area. from northern new england. and this is going to bring those temperatures back to the 80's. back to average for this time of year. as we head into tomorrow and really through the end of the workweek. we will see more sunshine from this as well. now, we do need more rain. this bright orange here, stretching from central massachusetts all the way up to southern new hampshire. we are still in a severe drought. this yellowish-beige, a moderate drought. we need any rain we can get. our rainfall deficit is over five inches. just over two inches of rain since june 1 in boston. and for today in boston, we haven't seen any measurable precipitation quite yet. for today, those temperatures, mid to upper 70's.

i'm thinking that is when these numbers will start to pick up. it will be nicer out there. if you have a tee time for this afternoon, i would say keep it. we are drying out. temperatures are pleasant out there. for tonight, winds are calm. patchy fog will develop tonight into tomorrow morning. those temperatures will be a little bit cooler. dew point trend for the next couple of days, tomorrow, those dew points drop down to 50's. looks nice and comfortable. then they will climb back into thm the forecast, look at tomorrow and thursday. really nice days. low humidity. and temperatures in the low 80's. and sunshine. by friday, though, we are going to bump up the heat. temperatures in the upper 80's. then saturday, we will watch the chance for some storms. >> kris: a north carolina man on what turned into a dangerous drive. the road literally opening up and taking him in underneath. there was water on the road. the man thought he could drive through it. a puddle or something.

sink hole that opened up. his eye is swollen shut. his ankle broken. his body bruised and battered. >> i feel horrible. i have never felt this bad in my life. >> kris: injuries that are the result of robert belcher driving into this massive hole. it was late at night. heavy rajs. belcher saw water on the road that he assumed was a puddle. he slowed to cross it. >> i didn't know until i was in it. my truck had went down already. started flipping. >> kris: javier gonzalez was there because he also hit that hole. >> i tried to stop. it was too late. i bumped. >> kris: moments later, he watched belcher hit the same hole. only the hole had grown in a few minutes between the accidents. belcher east car was swept away by rushing water. the father of three found himself trapped inside an

>> kris: movie moms are outraged in florida. they were actually at a screening of the new movie bad moms when they say one of them was told they had to leave. >> sarah: yeah. she says because she was breast-feeding her baby. >> in this day and age, it is impossible to be a good mom. >> sarah: a theater in florida confronting some mad moms in the audience. >> then when i heard other women saying he is telling her

>> sarah: her friend was asked to cover up while breast-feeding and then given a choice. >> he said "you can cover upon or you can leave." at that point, just kind of, you know, i was so hurt. >> reporter: she was with a group of 50 women who went to see the movie. a cup of them brought their children. the only problem, the theater's policy does not allow children age six and under to attend r-rated films. even with a parent. >> they were outside. manager. trying to get everything squared away. but what ended up happening, was he was unwilling to budge on the policy. >> sarah: while talking with the manager in the lobby, the women claim he went too far. he said the mom had to cover up while breast-feeding her baby. >> where are moms supposed to go? >> sarah: state law allows women to breast-feed in any public or private location. >> somebody can't stop the mom from breast-feeding.

>> kris: fitzgerald was working security detail for the democratic nominee hillary clinton in wakefield, new hampshire in late december. police say an unlicensed driver was trying to pass another car. when he crashed into fitzgerald's car. the other driver was killed. while fitzgerald suffered serious injuries to his spinal cord. he is crediting his doctors, family, and friends with helping him through the tough battle. but also says it is his law enforcement family that's really helping. >> it got me through some tough days. real idealou made my recovery what it is right now. still a long road to go. but you know, this community has been absolutely amazing. i couldn't have asked for anything more. >> kris: fitzgerald was given a check for $30,000 from the memorial fund.

alleged shaving scheme. they were trying to sell stolen razor blades. one man stole the razors while working at gillette. the suspect allegedly sold the razors on ebay. >> kris: also on 7: double trouble in new bedford for police. officers wrapping up what was a wild chase. only to have a second chase. look at this. pass right in front of them. a few yards away. when it was all over, at least one person was in custody. and neighbors, thankful that no one was seriously hurt. sirens blaring down the streetsle of new bedford monday afternoon. >> that's crazy. it's just insane. >> kris: state police involved in a lengthy pursuit. involved with a man who was armed with a knife and hatchet. the chase coming to an abrupt end, when the suspect's chevy blazer is pinned by a state patrol cruiser and an environmental police unit. >> he backed into the car behind him.

>> kris: brenda hernandez saw the chase play out on-line. >> they had to literally force him off the truck. it was bad. >> kris: the suspect tried to set himself on fire with butane. he was taken into custody. then, as officers were everyone ising his car,... searching his car, another pursuit just steps away. >> it was like two chases at once. >> kris: a driver with no front tire leading two p >> you have kids all over the place. these people that don't care about smashing into anybody's car pretty much. >> kris: no update from police on how that pursuit ended. for hernandez, she was happy no one was injured on such a dangerous afternoon. >> very grateful. i'm very happy no one got hurt. i'm surprised really. >> kris: the driver, by the way, was a 50-year-old man from new bedford. he was taken to the hospital to be checked out. >> sarah: happening now: a zika warning in florida.

people to stay away from one area in miami. more now from miami. >> i'm just really in shock. >> reporter: christie ann is in wynnewood and pregnant. she borrowed our insect repellent when finding out she is walking through ground zero for the zika virus. >> i'm a little kind of disheartened about the whole situation. because i actually just found out from my mother-in-law. >> reporter: the u.s. centers for disease control ised a vying pregnant women and any other women who are thinking of becoming pregnant to stay away from the area. after ten more cases were announced on monday. not only pregnant women are advised to stay away, pregnant women and their partners should follow steps to prevent mosquito bites. those in the area should use condoms or not have sex during pregnancy. women thinking about getting pregnant should talk to a

a total of 14 people have contracted the zika virus locally. gabriel john tells 7 news he is one of those people. his daughter translating that he is doing just fine. >> he is all right. >> he feels all right. >> reporter: doctors told him to cover his arms and legs when out of the house. >> my concern is my grandbabies. >> reporter: her daughter needs to stay in the area for now. >> she is pregnant. >> reporter: as officials spray the area, the usually popular outdoor seating at panther coffee was not so much on monday. health officials are asking any pregnant women who have been in the wynnewood area since mid-june to get tested for the zika virus to be safe.

wynnewood in recent weeks to hold off on having any children for at least eight weeks. reporting in miami, 7 news. >> kris: new details in the hot air balloon tragedy that happened in texas. officials say weather was not a factor in that crash. police say that the hot air balloon hit some power lines before crashing on saturday, killing all 16 people onboard. investigators believe the balloon did not malfunction because it was preparing to land when it crashed. >> very preliminary on-site examination reveals no evidence of preexisting failures, malfunctions, or problems. >> kris: the balloon's pilot has four prior convictions for drunk driving on his record. alcohol is not suspected to have played a role in this

>> sarah: water worries in rio. olympic officials insist the water in rio is clean. a 16-month-long study shows dangerously high levels of pollution in the water there. the tests indicate 1,400 athletes are at risk of getting sick while competing in water events during the games. water quality warning signs have been removed from rio's prominent beaches. rio stepping up security. you can see armed soldiers guarding the athletes' village. a number of the roads near the olympic navy boats are also patrolling the waters. it comes after the private firm that was hired to provide security during the olympics was fired over the weekend. nancy chen is in rio right now. she will be covering the action leading up to the opening ceremonies and throughout the games. her live reports start on thursday. >> kris: still ahead here at noon, his current movie tops the box office. but the next matt damon movie is raising concerns already

the lawns. in worcester, they picked up three quarters of an inch of rain. we haven't seen any measurable precipitation yet in boston. but a lot of rain is moving through right now. hopefully, that's going change. 71, the current temperature in boston right now. dew points in the low 60's. a little muggy out there again. winds are calm. we have been watching this wave of moisture pushing through massachusetts. and now it is starting to move offshore. so right now, some of the steadier rain is focused inside 128. from braintree up to wellesley. basically, up toou notice, it is still tracking east and moving off-shore. also watching some showers along the south shore. and then that heavier rain is to our south. martha's vineyard and nantucket. also getting some much-needed rainfall as we head into the rest of the day. i think things will start to clear up this afternoon. we are not going to rule out the chance for an isolated shower. mainly across southeast massachusetts. heading into about 2:00, 3:00. then by 4:00 or 5:00 this afternoon, i think that is when the sunshine will start to poke through.

think they will shape up to be a nice one. by tomorrow, overnight tonight, into tomorrow, high pressure is going to start to build over the region. and this is going to really bring back the sunshine. and also bring back those temperatures. in the 80's. it is going to feel much more seasonal out there. versus what it felt like today and yesterday. and even on sunday, it's been doomy and gloomy out there. let's talk about the tropics, though. in the atlantic, we now have our fifth named storm of the season. and this is tropical storm the last tropical storm was danielle. we haven't seen a tropical storm in the atlantic actually, since late june. we had a really feisty start to the hurricane season. kind of a lull in the activity. that storm will impact the yucatan peninsula and belease as we head into wednesday and thursday. i don't think it will have a big impact on us here in the united states. for today, temperatures mid-70's into the upper 70's. the sunshine this afternoon will help boost those temperatures. as we head into the next
