and, chris, a refreshing morning out there. >> chris: it is. gold medal weather here, day two here. low humidity sticking around. sea breezes kicking in along the coastline. we'll track some scattered showers and storms tomorrow with locally heavy rains for towns that do get hit with showers and storms. it will increase the humidity and heat. we're talking about a hot and humid stretch with temperatures running close to 90 if not above it and dew point will levels into the 70s. a refreshing start outside this morning. indeed, we'rere 54 in norwood. 58 in plymouth. 57 in bedford right now. 72 in the city of boston. the city retains the heat much wetter than the suburbs with that good radiational cooling on these cool, clear nights. dew point levels down into the 50s. we don't have much going on across new england. we have rain to the south. that will eventually bring us a shower chance tomorrow. sea breezes today. temperatures near 90 inland. >> christa: let's get to breaking news. a serious crash shutting down the mass pike westbound

27-year-old vanessa marcotte went out for a jog but never came back. she was back in town visiting family when tragedy struck. >> christa: this morning her killer is still out there. let's go 207's brandon gunnoe with the latest on our team coverage. >> brandon: police are on the lookout in the small north central mass town of princeton after investigators say someone brutally murdered 27-year-old vanessa marcotte. >> absolutely unbelievable. i'm just grieving for that family. i can't imagine their pain right now. attorney says the young woman went for a run around 1:00 sunday afternoon. her family reported her missing around 4:00. then at 8:30 her body was found in the woods only half mile from her mother's home. sources tell 7news there were burns to her head, hands and feet. >> it's just awful. it's awful for them. i'm concerned about the safety of my family, as well. >> this stuff doesn't happen in princeton, so we're just shocked. everyone is shocked. >> brandon: with no arrests and no suspect, authorities are
random act. we are asking residents of princeton and surrounding areas to use an abundance of caution. >> we would ask people to pay attention to their surroundings. if you see anything suspicious or out of place, please contact the princeton police department or the massachusetts state police. >> brandon: marcotte grew up in leominster and graduate with honors from b.u. in 2011. she's been living in new york and working for "vanessa marcotte was a much-loved member of the google team. she was known for her ubiquitous smile, passion for volunteer work and love of boston sports. we are deeply shocked and saddened, and our thoughts are with family and friends." detectives are looking for new clues they can find at this point, interviewing neighbors who may have seen something and don't necessarily realize it. they're looking for surveillance video that may help. meanwhile, the town of only more than a little more than 3,000
who jog regularly. i'm just worried. >> brandon: again, no arrests. if you know anything, you're asked to call police. extra patrols have been put in place to help families feel safe. in princeton, brandon gunnoe, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: and reaction is continuing to come in from those who knew marcotte best. many are heartbroken and shocked to hear of this murder in such a small town. our team coverage continues with 7's kimberly bookman. >> almost 24 marcotte's body was found in a wooded area half mile from her mother's home, brook station road is reopened but nothing is back to normal. >> working at a small company, it's kind of like a family, and people are very upset and angry about what happened. >> larry kim hired vanessa straight out of college. she worked for him at an
hit huff time, she kept spirits high. >> she was super cheerful, super smile. i just remember thinking to myself, wow, this is so fan task that we have vanessa on the team. >> a similar reaction at the high school where have a nasa graduated. at a student at bancroft from 2003 to 2007, vanessa was loved and respected by classmates and faculty alike. while those who knew and loved vanessa, people in princeton fear for her safety with the killer stillt police to be vigilant. >> as vanessa's family asks for brave circumstance her former boss keeps her memory alive. >> so sad. such great potential. and i knew she was going to go very far in her career because she was so smart and so ambitious. i'm just so sorry this happened. >> the medical examiner plans to do an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. in princeton, kimberly bookman,
in flames in south boston on east 4th street late last night. you can see the flames shooting out of the windows there. officials say the building was undergoing renovations when the fire happened. five people were displaced by the flames. no word yet on the cause of the fire. also this morning, police investigating after a state police s.u.v. was swiped in southie. they want to know how someone was able to jump in that cruiser and drive away before ditching it in somerville. >> it's pretty nuts. >> nick: people in southie just can't believe someone was able to hop in a state patrol cruiser and take off from a state maintenance lot. >> that's really weird. i don't understand how anyone could get away with that. >> nick: state police say the s.u.v., like this one, was taken from the mass dot lot on d street some time this morning. the spare cruiser was not a assigned to a specific trooper and had been dropped off late
police say when they noticed it was missing, they shut down the radio system. it was found abandoned in a somerville parking lot around 112:45 p.m. police say there were no weapons in the car, but some people still feel uneasy about someone other than a trooper driving around in a marked cruiser. >> i think it probably confused some people, they could go up to someone and pretend they're a trooper. that's probably not the best situation. >> i'm surprised >> neki: emmons, 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: we're headed into a olympic zone. another golden moment. team u.s.a.'s ryan murphy and lilly king bringing gold back to the states. >> christa: they weren't the only ones seeing success as a couple more olympic stars qualified for the finals. michael phelps. nancy chen has more from rio. >> nancy: hello from rio.
and there was a grudge match in the pool. let's get over into the highlights. >> lilly king has the lead. she's going to win it! >> nancy: lilly king setting an olympic record to win gold in the women's 100m breaststroke. it was a fight to the finish with russian swimmer youk nova. she was allowed to swim in rio despite a hto she came in second. teammates michael phelps and katie ledecky punching their tickets to gold medal races. michael phelps came in second in the 200m fly semifinal, which means he will now advance to the finals tuesday night. it will be his first chance at an individual gold at these games. a second-place finish by ledecky sending her to the women's 200m free final.
the semis but she didn't advance. >> yeah, big score here, big! >> nancy: the american diving team of steel johnson and david boudia taking silver in the 10m platform. johnson, who is making his olympic debut in rio, burst into tears of joy after their final dave diver. their silver is the highest the united states has ever placed in the event. another error. >> nancy: a second-round struggle for serena william, the defending single's champion. the match was filled with errors one day after losing her first-round doubles match with her sister venus. williams taking out her frustration on her racket at one point. >> there it is. >> nancy: in the end she won in two straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. and katie ledecky and michael phelps will be back in the pool tonight.
>> sarah: the u.s. men's team once again did not earn an olympic team. team u.s.a. finished fifth in last night's competition, more than two points behind china, which earned the bronze. japan won gold in the event. russia finished with silver. the u.s. men's gymnastics team last won olympic gold back in 1984. and here's a look at the updated medal count in rio. a big night for the americans, bringing their total to 19 medals, six more forna japan reaching double-digits with ten. >> christa: and nate ebner and the u.s. rugby team one of tonight's must-see minutes. the match will air during nbc late-night coverage. you can also the women's gymnastics team final with aly raisman tonight during prime time as well as michael phelps and katie ledecky going for individual gold. that should be awesome. 7news is your home for the summer games. nancy chen is still in rio. she's bringing you the latest results from competitions.

dew point levels down into the lower to middle 50s. another comfortable air mass in place. a lot of low humidity in place throughout the day today. not much of a change from yesterday. that means localized sea breezes at the coastline. warmest temperatures inland. close to 90 inland, but closer to 80 at the coast. some moisture down through the mid atlantic. this is going to sort of drift off to the north ever so slowly through the day today. overnight tonight and into tomorrow, and it storms for wednesday and the atmosphere will have quite a bit moisture with it. so it's possible that some towns pick up on some locally heavy rains. that means not everyone sees the locally heavy rain as it's hit-and-miss across the area. low rain chance on thursday. higher chance of heat and humidity will continue to see 90-plus thursday, friday and again into saturday. in terms of the rainfall amounts, again, they're going
over an inch of rain. other towns nothing outside for tomorrow. no rain on thursday. a couple isolated storm, it'slated to scattered friday afternoon, friday evening and again saturday. i think the higher risk of some more widespread scattered showers and storms as well as heavy rain sunday enter monday coming up in the forecast. could use a good soaking rain across the way. as we watch that front waving around on sunday into monday, we may get some more widespread rain. 86 to 91 this afternoon. these are inland a couple degrees either side of 90. closer to 80 at the coastline. another beautiful day with that low humidity. clear evening, otherwise increasing clouds late. not quite as cool. i don't think the suburbs will hold in the 50s tomorrow morning. we'll be back in the 60s to near 70 in the city of boston. the forecast for tomorrow features scattered showers and storms. muggy conditions. humidity starts coming up. temperatures running lower to middle 08s. wind out of the southwest 5 to 10mph. 7 on 7 forecast.
we start seeing the overnight lows only falling into the low 70s. very humid air mass in place. we'll see the high humidity thursday, friday, saturday, sunday. dew point levels 70-plus during that stretch. still comfortable at times. i think showers and storms more likely to be widespread sunday and monday and isolated on friday and saturday afternoon. >> christa: to the race for the white house. dozens of republican national security officials say they refuse to vote for donald trump. also trump makes an address i economy. >> the city of detroit is the living, breathing example of my opponent's failed economic agenda. >> christa: trump using the city's struggles as a backdrop to focus his message for his campaign. he says he'll adopt the tax brackets proposed by house republicans, and hillary clinton for her part attacking trump's plan at her rally in florida
