one person was killed at a kids' holiday football tournament. >> sarah: and the shopping begins. bar gain hunters hitting the stores at this early hour in search of the best deals. >> this is 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: good morning. thanks for joining us on this friday. i'm safe a french. >> nancy: i'm nancy chen in for christa. not just any friday. black friday. a lot of people out there getting their showers on. they've been going at it for hour >> sarah: wren, i noticed a few more cars on the road this morning. >> wren: the weather will cooperate. it's gloomy and damp, but not a soaker of the day. starting things out with drizzle which has been patchy, temperatures are quite varied. much warmer air over the cape as well as the coast. 47 degrees in hyannis. 47 degrees in martha's vineyard. as we head further inland. temperatures it in mid-30s in worcester. 34 degrees in jaffrey. with those higher terrains, we're looking at the potential

morning. that's largely because the surface... a couple surface counters have fallen below freezing in higher-terrain locations. while this isn't widespread, if you are still traveling, watch out for a couple slippery spots, especially before 8:00 a.m. otherwise we also have some fog to contend with. i think this will take a little bit of time to mix out, as well. expect the chance for patchy fog through the mid-morning hours. >> sarah: thanks, wren. breaking news, florence henderson, who played carol brady died. she was 82 years old. >> nancy: this morning hollywood is mourning the loss of a legend. ? here's a story. of a lovely lady ? >> nancy: that lovely lady is florence henderson, who played america's favorite mom carol brady on the 1970's hit tv sitcom "the brady bunch." her real store rir wasn't so ideal. born in 1934 in indiana, henderson grew up poor with an alcoholic father and a mother who left when she was just 12 years old.

talent to entertain the family and help make ends meet. >> i don't ever remember not singing. i would sing and pass the hat. i'd sing for groceries. >> nancy: the singer-turned actress then took her talents to tv. in 1959 she was nbc's "today" girl and she became first woman to co-host "the tonight show" in 1962. then in 1969, henderson became carol brady. >> i created the kind of mother that i wished i'd had and i think that everyone longed >> nancy: henderson continued to act and sing on tv for decades after the brady bunch. she even cha cha chad her way into living rooms in 2010 on "dancing with the stars." henderson had four children with her first husband ira bernstein. she met her second husband while undergoing treatment for stage fright and fear of flying. >> people used to kid john and say, "you hypnotized her."

maureen mccormack posted this on twitter, "florence henderson was a dear friend for so many years and in my heart forever. love and hugs to her family." henderson's publicist says she passed away from heart failure and was surrounded by her children. >> kris: a state trooper's car rear-ended by an s.u.v. the trooper transported to the hospital. 7's nicole oliverio is live now with more. nicole? accident happening just before 2:00. that state trooper needed to be taken to the hospital, but we're told he only has minor injuries. this crash happening just before 2:00 a.m. on 93 southbound just before exit 11 in boston. so according to state police, they say one of their trooper's cruisers was rear-ended by an s.u.v. the driver of that s.u.v. did stay on scene. there was some damage to both cars, but it wasn't too significant. it's unclear if that driver is going to face any charges.

oliverio, 7news "today in new england." >> nancy: right now customers crowding malls across the united states, getting in a serving of shopping after all that turkey. here's a live look at the north shore mall. people are still packing into stores. cars are still out there. busy on the roads as people try to get to the mall and fight for some parking spots. looks like a few open there, though. 7's danielle gersh tracking the traffic for us now. >> danielle: a lot of traffic today probably in the mall parking lots rather than the highways. the zakim bridge, very quiet out there. it's not looking too bad. if you're getting ready to head out the door right now, your drive to the mall looking pretty good. once you get there, not too bad either. let's head to the maps. you'll see a lot of green out there. just ten minutes from braintree to boston northbound on the expressway going to the south shore mall, not seeing any issues. a lot of green on the maps. there south of town, over toward

program, not seeing any problems there either. route 2 and 3 in good shape. 93 fine all the way back to 495. and heading into boston on route 1, you're in good shape. if you are taking the "t" or the 2 commuter rail today. keep in mind both are running on their normal weekday schedules. 7's victoria warren is out at the north shore mall. let's send it out to her. good morning, vicki. >> victoria: good morning. we have plenty of shoppers out here getting those black friday deals already. take a live look behind me. is actually one of the quieter times of the day at the mall, it will pick up around 6:00 a.m. shoppers hoping for some good sales. the north shore mall, these people have been at it for hours. despite the cold and the drizzle, black friday shoppers lined up waiting for those doors to open. it's almost like a sport for some people, people studying flyers, plotting out their plan of attack. in massachusetts stores can't open up until midnight, but up in new hampshire, some stores stay open on thanksgiving, which

holiday not at the dinner table but instead camping out to be first in line. >> i've actually been doing this for six years now. this is my fourth year being the number-one person in line. i do it every year. it's just a whole family comes down and spends thanksgiving together. it's what we do. it's what we have fun with. >> victoria: so some of these people, they had... they woke up yesterday. they started cooking their dinner. then they ate their dinner. some may hours. some have been up non-stop. one thing they are seeing this year, those door busters on black friday lasting longer, starting earlier. all of these retailers hoping to cash in on this black friday holiday. live this morning in peabody, victoria warren, 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: happening today, the man suspected of hitting four police officers with his car will be arraigned in court. 34-year-old vincent weeks was arrested wednesday. according to investigators, when

sped off, dragging two officers and hitting another two. weeks faces counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. the officers are expected to be okay. and new this morning, boston public school officials are conducting an internal investigation after allegations of sexual abuse on a school bus. according to the "herald," staffers allegedly failed to report that a six-year-old boy from the boston renaissance charter school allegedly molested ano c last month. the driver of that bus has been placed on paid leave. >> nancy: as donald trump continues his transition to the white house, intelligence officials are saying that the president-elect has only received two intelligence briefings since winning the election. in the past the president-elect typically got daily briefings. this news was first reported by the "washington post." according to the paper, vice president-elect mike pence has received briefings almost every day. and president-elect trump tweeting yesterday he was working hard even on

carrier a.c. company to stay in indiana. earlier this year the carrier plant announced it was moving production from minneapolis to mexico. the president-elect frequently referenced that move on the campaign trail. >> sarah: happening now, kentucky police are searching for suspects after a kids' holiday football tournament turned tragic. gunshots tearing through the crowd, leaving two people dead and six others injured. [gunfire] a hail of bullets force a crowd of people [gunfire] when the gary stop, the screaming begins. [screaming] this louisville park hosted the juice bowl, an annual football tournament. kids, parents, friends and neighbors gather to feast and watch football, but violence interrupted the festivities. >> most people were here having a good time as they do most of the time, but unfortunately this tragic situation has happened. >> sarah: a cell phone recorded more than a dozen gunshots. >> we're thankful more people

>> sarah: some of the shots were deadly. >> just to see that man shot in the head like, that and they're telling him to hold on, it's hard. it's really hard. >> sarah: as police investigate the motive, many in the crowd mourn the lives lost. >> get up. get up. >> this is very tragic of what's happened here. i mean, i'm saddened. >> it's a sad time for thanksgiving, and it's a sad day for the juice bowl. >> sarah: right now police still searching for suspects. >> nancy: and people in central america feeling the effect os. a major earthquake, the.0 magnitude quake hitting off the coast of el salvador and nicaragua on thursday. tsunami warnings in place throughout that region. the epicenter was a couple miles off the pacific coast of el salvador southwest of the city of san salvador. so far there have been no reports of serious damage. but this earthquake comes as other parts of central america brace for hurricane otto.

declaring a state of emergency. officials in costa rica ordering 4,000 people to evacuate the caribbean coast. hurricane otto made landfall as a category 3 storm but has since weakened to a tropical storm. it's the southrenmost hurricane to land in central america. heavy rain still an issue there, potentially causing dangerous flooding and mudslides. >> sarah: still ahead, the california mother who disappeared while jogging three weeks ago has been found safe. why w believe she was kidnapped. >> nancy: and rivals coming together to honor a fallen officer. how his family helped kick off a big thanksgiving game. >> wren: some of us saw a wintry mix. do we have more wintry weather in your forecast this weekend? that answer after the break. >> sarah: we can't to follow breaking news. actress florence henderson who played carol brady on "the brady bunch" has died.

>> sarah: so i had a super special thanksgiving. here's a picture of our group. we were so honored to host this swedish family through hospitality homes, which is a anyone profit that provides short-term housing and volunteer homes for family and friends for patients receiving medical care in boston. so there's blair with and kyla, she's one, as well, and she's getting her cancer treatments here. she's been at boston children's. so it was so amazing to have them over and this was our first time doing it, so i encourage anyone to really open up your homes for the holidays. so google hospitality homes. it's an incredible non-profit organization. >> looks like it was quite feast. there we saw some familiar faces for that picture.

we had a lot of good food. their families are not in new england. >> wren: that organization is a fantastic organization. we had a wonderful time, a ton of good food. thank you, sarah, wonderful host. today pretty accommodating weather. it will be cloudy, gloomy, damp. you can see, when it comes to snow, we're holding off. wet weather for us and drizzle. snow further to our northeast. maine seeing some of that here and continuing into the weekend. right now temperatures are in the low 40s for us. varied temperatures mu we're closer to the mid to low 30s. higher terrain could have a couple slippery spots out there. we have potential for ice on the roads. if you're traveling northwest of the 495 loop, definitely watch out for a couple slick spots, especially before 8:00 a.m. we also have patchy fog to contend with. visibility in worcester down town der two miles. this fog will take some time to mix out. we aren't looking at a terribly breezy day for us. so i'd anticipate some fog again, especially to our northwest. as we head into the mid-morning hours, we could still have some of, that and that will be out of

a look ahead, future cast showing drizzle, spotty showers possible this morning. definitely not a washout. and not very impressive rainfall totals. as we head into the afternoon, a better chance for nice showers lining up and bringing us moisture here. most of this is very light for us and not widespread. into tonight, we can see more drizzle. we'll keep that cloud cover through your weekend really and through today for sure. by saturday, you can see we do have the chance for showers, but those west of the 4 particular really not seeing too much moisture here. so i think a lot of us especially in western mass are going to stay entirely dry. most of these showers are going to be across the cape and the islands, the coast, as low pressure tracks further northward. this coastal system really not bringing a whole will the of moisture to southern new england at large. and you can see, i really think most of this is going to stay across the cape and the islands and the coast potentially really not seeing all this much moisture with this. but i do think the cape and the islands grab potentially a

as we head into sunday, we'll clear out some of that cloud cover and even see a couple peeks of sunshine. here's what it looks like in terms of our rain chances. by saturday a lot of that moisture staying further across the cape and the islands and the coast. we could wake up to a couple spotty showers early sunday. highs today trend mile. we're right around our average highs in the upper 40s. temperatures tonight mild, as well, in the upper 30s and low 40s. again the chance for patchy fog, isolated light showers, but most of us will stay dry tonight. i think most of us will stay dry temperatures tomorrow trend actually above average with a chance for some light showers and a better chance for showers into saturday night across the cape and the islands. >> sarah: a busy morning on the roads, but only if you're looking for black friday deals. taking a live look at the parking lot at one of the malls around here. danielle gersh has more. >> danielle: thanks, nancy. good morning, everyone. go get it before it's gone. people already walking into the malls. they've probably been at it for

the traffic. getting to the malls, it's really not too bad out there. but you can see that parking lot pretty full. cars already making their way into the malls this morning. let's go to the maps. you'll see a lot of green out there. so we're really not seeing much traffic on your main roadways this morning. braintree the boston northbound on the expressway, just ten minutes. route 3, 24 and 95 all fine all the way back to 495. heading to wrentham, heading to framingham, natick to do some shopping, you're in good shape. route 2 and 3 also looking good. 93 fine back to 495, and no issues heading into town on route 1. if you're taking the "t" or the commuter rail maybe for your black friday shopping, both are running on their typical weekday schedule. we're not seeing any delays. back to you, guys. >> sarah: thanks, danielle. a touching tribute for a state trooper killed in the line of duty. thomas clardy was hit during a traffic stop. the community came together to honor his sacrifice during a

marlborough high taking on hudson in a thanksgiving day matchup. but before the game, everyone paused and remembered fallen state trooper thomas clardy. he was from hudson, and both teams honored his family. >> i'm have honored to be here today. it's a beautiful tribute for my husband, for my family. >> sarah: clardy's oldest son held his little brother. >> here you go, little ism four-year-old noah did the coin toss. >> it's great that people are still thinking of us at this time. >> sarah: lewis de jesus was at the scene after another driver hit trooper clardy in the road. they served together in the

>> nancy: welcome back. >> wren: thanks for joining us. mild started 20 your day. temperatures low 30s in boston and norwood. more mile than what we saw for a high last week for some of us. so mild and also varied. close to 50 degrees in hyannis. much warmeac further inland we're looking at temperatures in the mid to even low 30s and the higher terrain areas. so we could see some slippery spots there. a glaze of ice possible in spots. so i definitely would allow a little slower commute, especially further to our northwest. also some patchy fog to contend with this morning that. will mix out by the mid-morning hours. >> and now time for 7sports with trey daerr. >> trey: some things in life are great by themselves, but let's face it, sometime thaifs even better together.

any mall you want to get to, you're in good shape on route 3, 24 and 95. the pike wide open. all the way out to framingham. we're in the seeing any issues. route 2 and 3 looking good. 93 also looking good heading into boston on route 1. you're in good shape. if you're taking the "t" or commuter rail this morning, both are operating on their typical weekday schedule. back to you, guys. >> we're following breaking news from overnight, a massachusetts state police cruiser rear-ended by an s.u.v. the trooper i to the hospital. 7's nicole oliverio is live now with more. nicole? >> nicole: it's believed that trooper has minor injuries. this all happening after a crash early this morning. according to investigators, they say the driver of an s.u.v. rear-ended into one of those trooper's cruisers. there was some damage to both cars. that trooper was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. now, we're told that the driver did stay on scene. it's unclear if that driver is going the fay nis charges.

near exit 11 in boston. so it's unclear exactly what led up to this accident. we're hoping to learn more information. for now, that's the latest live in boston. nicole oliverio, 7news "today in new england." >> nancy: nicole, thank you. new details on a dangerous drive. we're learning more about the american killed after a crash on 495 south in plainville. state police say the driver was heading the wrong way on this very busy highway. and 7's brandon gunnoe has the latest. >> two south. >> brandon: a man was driving the wrong way on 495 many plainville when he crashed head-on into another vehicle. he died on scene. >> it's as terrible as anything that i can imagine because it should be avoidable. >> brandon: it happened early on thanksgiving morning on 495 between exits 13 and 14. in the other car was a 21-year-old woman. the crash was so severe she was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. >> it was about a 25 minute

man drove on to the interstate going the wrong way and what caused him to do so in the first place. the interstates and ramps are clearly marked and can't understand how someone can make such a deadly mistake. >> i've never had any problems seeing the right way and the wrong way to go. but it's not an uncommon problem, which surprises me. >> the 22-year-old driver who died in the crash at 2:00 a.m. was from norton. no one else was in the car. >> tragic. i feel really bad for their families and wish them well. >> my you better be wide awake. don't drink, okay, and if you are not feeling well, pull over. >> brandon: the 21-year-old girl in the other car is from barnstable. she was taken to a hospital in rhode island with serious injuries. in foxborough, brandon gunnoe, 7news "today in new england." >> nancy: right now police are looking for an armed robber who took cash from a subway restaurant on mill street. officials say the suspect went inside the store and showed a knife to the clerk on wednesday

he had a gun. the clerk then gave him a small amount of money and the suspect took off. >> sarah: fire officials are investigating after a home in salem, new hampshire, goes up in flames. smoke pouring out of the house on haverhill road thursday morning. police say the homeowner was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. a neighbor was treated for chest pain. >> nancy: a street in springfield shut down because of a natural gas leak. several people along the street were evacuated when gas started leaking 8:00 last night. crews were on the scene cleaning up the area. no word yet on the cause of that leak. >> sarah: happening today, macy's in downtown crossing will ring in the christmas spirit. the store's official christmas window unveiling and lielging will kick off tonight at 5:00 p.m. some special guests will be singer jo jo and the boston children's choir. the holiday season in full swing in attleboro. the 2016 christmas festival of lights kicked off last night. people from all over gathered at
